Magnetic storage wire counter design principles are given. Magnetic storage wire was coupled with two phase propagational driver in manual set counter shift register. Time delay between magnetic counter domain insertion and corresponding output pulse provides counting functions.
The quasi-Monte Carlo method of integration offers an attractive solution to the problem of evaluating integrals in a large number of dimensions; however, the associated error bounds are difficult to obtain theoretically. Since these bounds are associated with the L2 discrepancy of the set of points used in the integration. Numerical calculations of the L2 discrepancy for several types of quasi-Monte Carlo formulae are presented.
Data for the 6300 A line of atomic oxygen from the main body airglow photometer on the OGO-D satellite are summarized in a set of 19 maps for various local times at night between 30 August 1967 and 10 January 1968.
A detailed interpretation and analysis of selected corn blight data set was undertaken in order to better define the present capabilities and limitations of agricultural remote multispectral sensing and automatic processing techniques and to establish the areas of investigation needing futher attention in the development of operational survey systems. While the emphasis of this effort was directed toward the detection of various corn blight levels, problems related to the more general task of crop identification were also investigated. Since the analog recognition computer (SPARC) was fully committed to the more routine aspects of processing and since the detailed interpretation and analysis required more in the way of quantitative information, the CDC 1604 digital computer was employed.
The development and characteristics of the Stellar Tracking Rocket Attitude Positioning (STRAP) system are discussed. The objective of the program was to produce eight sets of reliable flight hardware at a cost that was compatible with the typical sounding rocket mission. The flight system consists of: (1) the attitude control system, (2) the pneumatics systems components, and a fine guidance error sensors star tracker. The performance of the system and the areas where improvements are needed are examined. Line drawings and circuit diagrams are presented to amplify the accomplishments of the project.
The geological setting, petrography and history of this Apollo 15 lunar rock sample are discussed, characterizing the sample as coarse-grained anorthosite composed largely of calcic plagioclase with small amounts of three pyroxene phases. The presence of shattered and granulated minerals in the texture of the rock is traced to two or more fragmentation events, and the presence of irregular bands of coarsely recrystallized plagioclase and minor pyroxene crossing larger plagioclase grains is traced to an earlier thermal metamorphic event. It is pointed out that any of these events may have affected apparent radiometric ages of elements in this rock. A comparative summarization of data suggests that this rock is the least-deformed member of a suite of similar rocks ejected from beneath the regolith at Spur crater.
The optimum processing (likelihood functional) is found for a set of M images, each the sum of a member of a signal sequence due to an object to be detected and its parameters estimated, a sample function of a noise field, and a sample function of a common background field. The noise fields are independent, zero mean, white Gaussian fields, all independent of the background field. The latter is assumed to be either (1) completely unknown or of known mean and covariance functions with (2) a certain fluctuation property or (3) Gaussian. Three equivalent forms of the optimum processing are found: (1) a summation of generalized matched filterings of the images, (2) a summation of matched filtering of certain generalized differences of the images, and (3) a summation of 'estimator-correlator' type filterings. The detection performance and optimum signal/image selection under the Neyman-Pearson criterion is given, and is shown that optimum processor and signal design can completely eliminate any effect of the background on detectability.
First, second, and third grade pupils served as subjects in an experiment designed to show the effect of age, mode of stimulus presentation, and information value on recognition time. Stimuli were presented in picture and printed word form and in groups of 2, 4, and 8. The results of the study indicate that first graders are slower than second and third graders who are nearly equal. There is a gross shift in reaction time as a function of mode of stimulus presentation with increase in age. The first graders take much longer to identify words than pictures, while the reverse is true of the older groups. With regard to set size, a slope appears in the pictures condition in the older groups, while for first graders, a large slope occurs in the words condition and only a much smaller one for pictures.
Information necessary for the operation and maintenance of the Model 600F Data Transmission Test Set is presented. A description is contained of the physical and functional characteristics; pertinent installation data; instructions for operating the equipment; general and detailed principles of operation; preventive and corrective maintenance procedures; and block, logic, and component layout diagrams of the equipment and its major component assemblies.
Linear vector space theory is used to develop a general representation of a set of data vectors or random vectors by linear combinations of orthonormal vectors such that the mean squared error of the representation is minimized. The orthonormal vectors are shown to be the eigenvectors of an operator. The general representation is applied to several specific problems involving the use of the Karhunen-Loeve expansion, principal component analysis, and empirical orthogonal functions; and the common properties of these representations are developed.
A brief description is presented of a canonical set of equations which governs the behavior of an n-body spacecraft. General results are given for the case in which the spacecraft is modeled in terms of n rigid bodies connected by dissipative elastic joints. The final equations are free from constraint torques and involve only r variables (r is the number of degrees of freedom of the system). An advantage which accompanies the elimination of the constraint torques is a decrease in the computer run time (especially when n is large).
Based on a study of the oblique portion of Apollo 16 panoramic photographs, a descriptions is presented of the geologic setting of the Soviet Luna 20 landing site. The complexly faulted terrain at this site has probably been involved in many generations of shattering and uplift produced by impacts which formed the large basin ring structures. Preliminary analysis of samples and photography indicates some similarities between the Luna 20 and Apollo 16 landing sites.
