We discuss future directions of Blockchain as a collaborative value co-creation platform, in which network participants can gain extra insights that cannot be accessed when disconnected from the others. As such, we propose a decentralized machine learning framework that is carefully designed to respect the values of democracy, diversity, and privacy. Specifically, we propose a federated multi-task learning framework that integrates a privacy-preserving dynamic consensus algorithm. We show that a specific network topology called the expander graph dramatically improves the scalability of global consensus building. We conclude the paper by making some remarks on open problems.

Here this paper presents autonomous restoration of networked microgrids using distributed energy resources (DERs), inverter-based resources (IBRs) in general, and controllable assets of intelligence without communication to achieve a extremely resilient power system restoration. The main innovation of this work lies in use of real-time smart sensing and decision making that enable autonomous recombination of islanded microgrids, which are individually black-started by local grid-forming (GFM) inverter units. The smart circuit breakers (SCBs) designed and demonstrated here play critical roles in the restoration process to achieve autonomy; the autonomous restoration scheme is not pre-engineered and may be subject to encounter overloading, live or downed segments as the boundary of the microgrids dynamically expands without prior knowledge and only with local measurement. We demonstrate autonomous microgrid restoration both in simulation of a modified IEEE 13-bus system, and in a hardware testbed comprising 24 GFM-IBRs and 6-SCBs, depicting several scenarios to evaluate their functionalities and interoperability. This work validates high potential of extremely resilient microgrid using novel approaches for inverter-based bottom-up system restoration in a communication-free paradigm.
A small amount of alkali metals goes a long way toward improving hybrid perovskites for hot carrier solar cells.
Screen of mutants from a mannosyltransferase family identified the importance of MNT5 for C. auris biofilm drug resistance and neutrophil evasion. Biochemical analysis of the mnt5∆ mutant matrix and cell wall identified alterations in the mannan structures. Resistance and matrix for mnt5∆ were restored with delivery of wild-type matrix via extracellular vesicles. Analysis of the mnt5∆ cell wall revealed a reduction in mannan and compensatory increase in cell surface glucan and chitin, suggesting a role for MNT5 in mannan masking of pathogen-associated molecular patterns.

This study investigates the efficacy of a polymer coating, PVdC-co-AN, in enhancing the stability and reversibility of the electrochemical Mg anode interface. Coated electrodes, immersed in a 0.25 M Mg(TFSI) 2 −0.50 M MgCl 2 /dimethoxyethane (DME) electrolyte, exhibit notable improvements. Cyclic voltammetry demonstrates consistent behavior with the coated electrode, while the uncoated electrode changes dramatically. During extended open circuit potential conditions, the coated electrode maintains much higher coulombic efficiency (93%) compared to the uncoated electrode (62%). Galvanostatic cycling test over 200 cycles further show the benefits of the PVdC-co-AN coating, decreasing the overpotential of Mg plating and improving long-term stability. The coated electrodes also demonstrate improved rate capability at higher current densities. Surface analysis reveals differences in the formation of byproducts between the coated and uncoated electrodes, indicating a more stable and uniform interface in the former. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy suggests that the polymer influences ion mobility through tuning the solvation environments which results in better kinetics and fewer byproducts. In summary, the study affirms that the PVdC-co-AN coating significantly improves the stability and performance of Mg electrochemistry, offering a promising advancement for practical battery applications.

The software uses Bayes' theorem to describe the probability of an event based on prior knowledge of conditions that might be related to the event. The purpose of Bayesian analysis is to determine posterior probabilities based on prior probabilities where new information can be used in the decision-making process as additional data is gathered. The software will be used in Probabilistic Risk Assessments (PRAs) related to the Europa Clipper mission, which is one of NASA’s top priorities. Ultimately, the mission entails sending the Europa Clipper spacecraft to Jupiter’s Europa moon to orbit the planet and collect data for research and development. Europa is the smallest of the four Galilean moons orbiting Jupiter and is believed by researchers to be the most promising place to look for present-day environments suitable for life. Europa is thought to have an iron core, a rocky mantle, and a salt-water ocean covered by an ice-layered surface.
