A High-Frequency Planar Transformer with Medium-Voltage Isolation

This paper presents the design of a low-loss, high-frequency planar transformer having medium-voltage (10’s of kV) isolation capability while transformer primary and secondary windings are interleaved to reduce losses. Medium-voltage isolation between adjacent printed circuit board (PCB) layers is extremely challenging using traditional PCB dielectrics. The isolation requirement is met using PCB with 7 kV/mil polyimide (Panasonic Felios RF775) as the dielectric, and by an appropriate layout of the windings and the inter-winding vias. The transformer is used to implement a dual active bridge (DAB) converter in a stackable dc-ac architecture where the dc port is connected to a photovoltaic (PV) string and ac outputs are connected in series to achieve direct PV string-to-medium voltage conversion without the need for low-voltage collection or a bulky line frequency transformer. Since each DAB transformer processes time-varying power, a design methodology is developed to minimize line-cycle-averaged losses. Experimental results are presented for a 1:1 planar transformer in a 7.5 kW SiC-based dc-to-ac module operating at 200 kHz. Isolation of 26 kV between the primary and secondary layers and between the windings and the core is verified using a hipot tester.

Comparison of CCM- and CRM-Based Boost Parallel Active Power Decoupler for PV Microinverter

Single-phase inverter or rectifier systems often make use of an active power decoupler (APD) to balance the mismatch between constant dc power and fluctuating ac power. This article deals with the comparison of continuous conduction mode (CCM) and critical conduction mode (CRM) operation-based design of a parallel boost-type APD for photovoltaic microinverter applications. From a design perspective, multiobjective analysis of efficiency, volume, and cost is explored within a decision space including planar inductors, gallium nitride based devices, film capacitors, switching frequency, and modulation (CCM vs. CRM). The theoretical study analyzes all possible design configurations within CCM and CRM and identifies Pareto-optimal designs, from which the selected CRM design can achieve reduced system volume and lower cost with the use of smaller inductor core, while operating with similar California Energy Commission efficiency drop as the selected CCM design. From a control perspective, a pulsewidth modulation based control strategy is proposed to implement closed-loop CRM modulation that does not rely on zero-crossing detection. Furthermore, closed-loop systems are designed for the optimal CCM and CRM realizations, and the final system characteristics are compared. Experimental results, obtained using two separate 40-V, 400-W hardware prototypes for CCM and CRM, are presented to verify the analyses.

A High-Frequency Planar Transformer with Medium-Voltage Isolation: Preprint

This paper presents the design of a low-loss, high-frequency planar transformer having medium-voltage (10's of kV) isolation capability while transformer primary and secondary windings are interleaved to reduce losses. Medium-voltage isolation between adjacent printed circuit board (PCB) layers is extremely challenging using traditional PCB dielectrics. The isolation requirement is met using PCB with $7$\,kV/mil polyimide (Panasonic Felios RF775) as the dielectric, and by an appropriate layout of the windings and the inter-winding vias. Experimental results are presented for a 1:1 planar transformer in a 7.5\,kW SiC-based dc-to-ac module operating at 200 kHz. Isolation of 26 kV between the primary and secondary layers and between the windings and the core is verified using a hipot tester.

Relative potentials of concentrating and two-axis tracking flat-plate photovoltaic arrays for central-station applications

The purpose of this study is to assess the relative economic potentials of concenrating and two-axis tracking flat-plate photovoltaic arrays for central-station applications in the mid-1990's. Specific objectives of this study are to provide information on concentrator photovoltaic collector probabilistic price and efficiency levels to illustrate critical areas of R&D for concentrator cells and collectors, and to compare concentrator and flat-plate PV price and efficiency alternatives for several locations, based on their implied costs of energy. To deal with the uncertainties surrounding research and development activities in general, a probabilistic assessment of commercially achievable concentrator photovoltaic collector efficiencies and prices (at the factory loading dock) is performed. The results of this projection of concentrator photovoltaic technology are then compared with a previous flat-plate module price analysis (performed early in 1983). To focus this analysis on specific collector alternatives and their implied energy costs for different locations, similar two-axis tracking designs are assumed for both concentrator and flat-plate options.

Power Budget Analysis for High Altitude Airships

The High Altitude Airship (HAA) has various potential applications and mission scenarios that require onboard energy harvesting and power distribution systems. The energy source considered for the HAA s power budget is solar photon energy that allows the use of either photovoltaic (PV) cells or advanced thermoelectric (ATE) converters. Both PV cells and an ATE system utilizing high performance thermoelectric materials were briefly compared to identify the advantages of ATE for HAA applications in this study. The ATE can generate a higher quantity of harvested energy than PV cells by utilizing the cascaded efficiency of a three-staged ATE in a tandem mode configuration. Assuming that each stage of ATE material has the figure of merit of 5, the cascaded efficiency of a three-staged ATE system approaches the overall conversion efficiency greater than 60%. Based on this estimated efficiency, the configuration of a HAA and the power utility modules are defined.

Hardware Design and Demonstration of a 100kW, 99% Efficiency Dual Active Half Bridge Converter Based on 1700V SiC Power MOSFET

High efficiency, high density and galvanically isolated power converters are attractive for numerous medium voltage high power applications. This paper presents a 1.5kVdc, 100kW bidirectional Dual Active Half Bridge (DAHB) using newly developed 1.7kV SiC MOSFET modules. The DAHB achieved an efficiency of 98.6% at full load of 100kW and a maximum of 99% at 45kW, operating as an isolated DC/DC converter. The converter also achieved an efficiency of 97.8% operating as an isolated DC/AC inverter. An optimized PCB-based busbar design has significantly reduced the voltage overshoot across the device, making the design suitable for 1500Vdc input application such as 1500V PV inverters. Typical partial discharge inception voltage (PDIV) of the optimized PCB busbar is 1.7kVpeak with total charge <10pC. The power density of the DAHB converter is 1.8MVA/m 3 which is much higher than traditional two-stage industry products. The DAHB converter can be used as a building block for a 4.16kV/1MVA utility scale PV systems with input parallel and output series configuration.

Implantable photoelectronic charging (I-PEC) for medical implants

Medical implants with functionalities such as sensing, health monitoring, stimulation, diagnosis, and physiological treatment are rapidly growing. With the increasing functional sophistication and addition of modules such as data transmission, on-chip processing, and data storage, energy demand of the implantable system is also growing. Using implantable energy harvester either to recharge or ultimately replace hazardous battery is essential to provide a long-term sustainable solution. Furthermore, energy harvesting techniques using piezoelectric, thermoelectric, radio frequency power transmission, biofuel, and photoelectronic (or sometimes termed as “photovoltaic” in terms of solar light harvesting, i.e., PV) conversion, have been attempted for the implantable, but these methods are currently limited by insufficient power output, large footprint, and low efficiency. Nevertheless, the planar PV with potential of lighter weight, higher energy density, and higher efficiency, provides promising power solution for in-body medical implants. In this short review, we will discuss the potential opportunities and challenges associated with PV's for medical implants, covering materials, to devices, and to system level requirements.

The ASCA PV phase observation of FO Aquarii

We report on a approximately 1-day Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA) observation of the intermediate polar FO Aquarii. We find two distinctive spectral components, one unabsorbed and the other strongly absorbed; the observed 2-10 keV flux severely underestimates the total system luminosity, due to this strong absorption intrinsic to the binary. The absorbed component is dominant in terms of luminosity, and its light curve is simple. The unabsorbed component accounts for approximately 2% of the luminosity, and shows a much more complicated light curve. As the dominant component predominantly shows a sinusoidal modulation at the white dwarf spin period, it provides a strong evidence for a partial accretion disk in the system.

PV Fleet Performance Data Initiative Program and Methodology

The US Department of Energy’s PV Fleet Performance Data Initiative has been launched in order to collect and evaluate production data across multiple PV fleet partners. Performance statistics are anonymized, aggregated and shared to represent a snapshot of the US commercial and utility-scale fleet. Production data have been collected from over 1500 systems representing more than 1.3 GWdc capacity. Preliminary analysis indicates median performance loss rates are in line with previous publications of system degradation, on the order of –0.6%/yr to –0.9%/yr (preliminary numbers subject to change). These values are higher than module-only degradation rates which are often used in pro-forma estimates of project performance and economics, potentially exposing owner/operators to increased risk if systems under-perform over time.
