Wafer bonded virtual substrate and method for forming the same

A method of forming a virtual substrate comprised of an optoelectronic device substrate and handle substrate comprises the steps of initiating bonding of the device substrate to the handle substrate, improving or increasing the mechanical strength of the device and handle substrates, and thinning the device substrate to leave a single-crystal film on the virtual substrate such as by exfoliation of a device film from the device substrate. The handle substrate is typically Si or other inexpensive common substrate material, while the optoelectronic device substrate is formed of more expensive and specialized electro-optic material. Using the methodology of the invention a wide variety of thin film electro-optic materials of high quality can be bonded to inexpensive substrates which serve as the mechanical support for an optoelectronic device layer fabricated in the thin film electro-optic material.

Proposed integrated in-line array of semiconductor lasers intended to provide high reliability and/or long operating lifetime. Multiple integrated collinear semiconductor lasers share common optical waveguide but individually electrically excited. When one device fails, another switched on. Important advantage in systems in which both reliability of diode lasers and alignment of those lasers with other optical components critical.

Multiresponse Imaging For Improved Resolution

Images restored with resolution finer than sampling lattice. Multiresponse imaging overcomes sampling-passband constraint and critically constrained only by optical response and sensitivity of image-gathering device. Process consists of multiresponse image gathering and Wiener-matrix restoration. Image-gathering process acquires sequence of images, each with different optical response so within-pass-band and aliased signal components weighted differently. Wiener-matrix filter, in turn, unscrambles within-passband and aliased frequency components of undersampled signal and restores them up to cutoff frequency of optical response.

High-power diode lasers for optical communications applications

High-power, single-mode, double-heterojunction AlGaAs diode lasers are being developed to meet source requirements for both fiber optic local area network and free space communications systems. An individual device, based on the channeled-substrate-planar (CSP) structure, has yielded single spatial and longitudinal mode outputs of up to 90 mW CW, and has maintained a single spatial mode to 150 mW CW. Phase-locked arrays of closely spaced index-guided lasers have been designed and fabricated with the aim of multiplying the outputs of the individual devices to even higher power levels in a stable, single-lobe, anastigmatic beam. The optical modes of the lasers in such arrays can couple together in such a way that they appear to be emanating from a single source, and can therefore be efficiently coupled into optical communications systems. This paper will review the state of high-power laser technology and discuss the communication system implications of these devices.

Two-dimensional radiant energy array computers and computing devices

Two dimensional digital computers and computer devices operate in parallel on rectangular arrays of digital radiant energy optical signal elements which are arranged in ordered rows and columns. Logic gate devices receive two input arrays and provide an output array having digital states dependent only on the digital states of the signal elements of the two input arrays at corresponding row and column positions. The logic devices include an array of photoconductors responsive to at least one of the input arrays for either selectively accelerating electrons to a phosphor output surface, applying potentials to an electroluminescent output layer, exciting an array of discrete radiant energy sources, or exciting a liquid crystal to influence crystal transparency or reflectivity.

Performance characteristics and statistics of a laser initiated microdetonator

The test results of 320 units of the laser initiated microdetonator are summarized. The commercially fabricated units used a lead styphnate/lead azide/HMX (1 mg/17.5 mg/13.5 mg) explosive train design contained in a miniature aluminum can and completed with a glass-metal seal window. The test parameters were the high and low laser energy, high and low temperature, laser pulse duration, laser wavelength and nuclear radiation (5 x 10 to the 6th rads of 1 MeV gamma ray). The performance parameters were the laser energy for ignition and the actuation response time. Included also is a description of the development of a flexible, continuously advanced train of explosive devices by using the units, miniature optics and fiber optics.

Fiber optic Raman thermometer for Space Shuttle main engine preburner profiling

The feasibility of combustion gas temperature measurements in the SSME fuel preburner using nonintrusive optical diagnostics was investigated. Temperature profiles are desired in the high pressure, hydrogen-rich preburner stream to evaluate designs to alleviate thermal stressing of the fuel pump turbine blades. Considering the preburner operating conditions and optical access restrictions, a spontaneous Raman backscattering system, implemented with optical fibers to couple to the combustion device, was selected as the most practical for gas temperature probing. A system is described which employs a remotely-located argon-ion laser to excite the molecular hydrogen Raman spectrum. The laser radiation is conveyed to the combustor through an optical fiber and focused through a window into the chamber by an optical head attached to the combustor. The gas temperature is determined from the distribution of rotational populations represented in the Raman spectrum.

Magnetic Bearing With Radial and Angular Control

Active magnetic bearing stably levitates rotor against radial (lateral) and axial motion and points rotor axis in controllable direction, yet allows rotor to turn freely about own axis. Rotor only moving part, and absence of mechanical contact between rotor and stator assures long life. Active magnetic bearing includes electromagnet coils tilting rotor clockwise or counterclockwise, or move it right or left. Feedback control system maintains rotor at equilibrium radial and angular positions in response to signals from position sensors. No active control needed to maintain equilibrium axial position. Adjustable magnetic bearing useful in high-speed rotating devices, robotic joints, and supports for optical elements.

Index grating lifetime in photorefractive GaAs

The index grating lifetime in liquid encapsulated Czochralski-grown undoped semi-insulating GaAs was measured using a beam coupling technique. The largest lifetime measure was about 8 s under a read beam intensity of 0.7 mW/sq cm with the grating periodicity being 0.63 microns. The measured value decreases to milliseconds as the read beam intensity and the grating periodicity increase to about 10 mW/sq cm and 4 microns, respectively. This range of grating lifetime in this material is adequate for its use in real-time spatial light modulators, reconfigurable beam steering devices, and dynamic memory elements, for optical computing. In addition, the results suggest that the lifetime is sensitive to residual imperfections in the crystal.

A probe for real-time images of particle beams and their analyses in a merged-beams apparatus

A real-time charged particle beam probe was developed, which can be used both as a beam diagnostic (beam tuning) and to quantitatively determine the three-dimensional density distribution of a beam. The probe consists of a microchannel plate, an aluminized phosphor screen deposited on a fiber-optic faceplate, a flexible fiber-optic bundle, and a charge injection device (CID) in tandem. Digital or analog video output of the CID is fed into a computer or oscilloscope, respectively, for analysis or observation. The probe can be moved continuously along the beams' paths to obtain 'pictures' of the beam at any desired interval, thus giving three-dimensional form factors. The beams, singly or simultaneously, may be observed on the monitor facilitating the task of beam adjustment for optimum overlap. The digital output is used for quantitative computation of the beam overlaps. The device is linear with beam intensity, but the performance degrades with time due to beam damage of the microchannel plate.
