In-situ microstructure observation of oxidized SiC layer in surrogate TRISO fuel particles under krypton ion irradiation

In accidental scenarios of high temperature gas-cooled reactors, both oxidation of and irradiation to the SiC layer in tri-structural-isotropic (TRISO) fuel particles can change the microstructure and integrity of the fuel elements. Here, in the present study, microstructure and defect evolution in the oxidized SiC layer of surrogate TRISO fuel particles under 1.2 MeV krypton ion irradiation was observed by in-situ transmission electron microscopy. The SiC layers oxidized in water vapor at 1200 °C were irradiated azt room temperature and 800 °C and at damage levels of 0.28–11.2 dpa, respectively. SiC and SiO 2 were found to still be in their crystal structures at the damage level of 11.2 dpa at 800 °C, while SiC was observed to have been amorphized at only 0.56 dpa irradiation at room temperature. The defect number density at 800 °C was an order of magnitude lower than that in the sample irradiated at room temperature. Also, crystalline SiO 2 had higher radiation resistance compared to SiC. A defect reaction rate theory was utilized to understand the fundamental defect evolution process and irradiation resistance difference.

Key Elements of Auroral Substorm Development and their Relationship to Recent Observations of Detached Sub-Auroral Phenomena Including STEVE-like Emissions

Since Akasofu introduced the concept of the substorm in 1964, numerous refinements have been added to the phenomenological model of how auroral substorms develop. Here, we review several of the most important of these including; polar cap patches, intensifications of the Polar Activated Band (PAB) at the poleward edge of the bulge, the development of new arcs poleward, the generation of auroral streamers, the evolution of streamers into auroral torches and omega bands, the association of streamers with particle injection and BBF activity in the tail, and wedgelet-like magnetic perturbations on the ground. We also review the concept of “contact breakups” which are breakups that appear to be triggered by the arrival of streamer-like forms in the equatorward regions of the oval. Finally, we remind the community that the addition of detached sub-auroral emissions was made to the phenomenological picture of substorm develop in the late 1960s along with the concept of auroral streamers. Newer observations of detached sub-auroral (STEVE-like emissions) from the Viking/UVI and POLAR/VIS imagers are presented which confirm that they are east-west aligned bands of emission that separate away from the equatorward edge of the auroral oval in response to intensifications of the poleward edge of the bulge and subsequent streamer production. We propose a new model for the formation of detached sub-auroral (STEVE-like) emissions in which a non-linear growth of a SAPS-driven instability (e.g. like the shear-flow/ballooning instability) at the plasmapause results in the disruption of the boundary separating hot plasma sheet particle from the cold plasmaspheric plasma. It is proposed that the resulting intermixing of plasma populations leads to both the observed STEVE-like emissions and also provides a source of cold plasma on open drift paths that can feed the long-lived drainage plumes that have recently been discovered.

Physics constrained learning for data-driven inverse modeling from sparse observations

Deep neural networks (DNN) have been used to model nonlinear relations between physical quantities. Those DNNs are embedded in physical systems described by partial differential equations (PDE) and trained by minimizing a loss function that measures the discrepancy between predictions and observations in some chosen norm. This loss function often includes the PDE constraints as a penalty term when only sparse observations are available. As a result, the PDE is only satisfied approximately by the solution. However, the penalty term typically slows down the convergence of the optimizer for stiff problems. We present a new approach that trains the embedded DNNs while numerically satisfying the PDE constraints. We develop an algorithm that enables differentiating both explicit and implicit numerical solvers in reverse-mode automatic differentiation. This allows the gradients of the DNNs and the PDE solvers to be computed in a unified framework. We demonstrate that our approach enjoys faster convergence and better stability in relatively stiff problems compared to the penalty method. Furthermore, our approach allows for the potential to solve and accelerate a wide range of data-driven inverse modeling, where the physical constraints are described by PDEs and need to be satisfied accurately.

In situ observation of the deformation and fracture of an alumina-alumina ceramic-matrix composite at elevated temperature using x-ray computed tomography

The deformation and fracture of a 0/90° Nextel 720 mullite fibre / alumina matrix ceramic-matrix composite material has been observed by in situ synchrotron x-ray computed micro-tomography at ambient temperature and at 1100 °C. A three-point loading configuration was used and samples were loaded monotonically until final fracture. Here, the flexural strength was found to be unaffected by temperature. 3D visualisation of the microstructure showed fracture occurred by propagation of internal cracks at stresses close to the flexural strength. Shear fractures propagated across fibre bundles that were oriented perpendicular to the flexural stress at both room temperature and 1100 °C. At the higher temperature, an additional failure mode of delamination was observed, that may arise from relaxation of thermal residual stresses and creep.

Observation of skyrmion bubbles in multilayer [Pt/Co/Cu] n using spin-polarized STM

Magnetic multilayers are a promising platform for storage and logic devices based on skyrmion spin textures, due to the large materials phase space for tuning properties. Epitaxial superlattice structures of [Pt/Co/Cu]n thin films were grown by molecular beam epitaxy at room temperature. Spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM) of these samples was used to probe the connection between surface structure and skyrmion morphology with nanoscale spatial resolution. Irregular-shaped skyrmion bubbles were observed, with effective diameters from 20 to 200 nm that are much larger than the nanoscale grain structure of the surface topography. Nucleation, annihilation, and motion of skyrmion bubbles could be driven using the stray field of the ferromagnetic tip in repeated imaging, and spin-polarized current/voltage pulses. Furthermore, our detailed comparison of STM topography and differential conductance images shows that there are no surface defects or inhomogeneities at length scales that could account for the range in skyrmion bubble size or shape observed in the measurements.

In-situ HRTEM observations of intermediate phase transformation in lattice reorientation in HCP rhenium

In-situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) is performed to investigate the deformation behavior of hexagonal close-packed rhenium (Re) which is compressed along the $\langle1\overline{1}00\rangle$ direction. Atomistic simulations are also conducted to better understand the deformation mechanisms. Two types of lattice reorientation are observed during compression. The first type involves the reorientation of one lattice by ~90° around $\langle1\overline{1}00\rangle$, which is accomplished by the formation of an intermediate face-center-cubic (FCC) phase at the interface. This transformation sequence can be described as {$1\overline{1}00$} matrix → {$111$} FCC → ($0001$) twin . In the second type, a new grain is formed but does not satisfy any known twin relationship with the matrix, and an intermediate FCC phase is also formed. The transformation sequence can be described as {$1\overline{1}00$} matrix → {$111$} FCC → ($0001$) grain . Mechanisms responsible for the observed lattice reorientation and sequential phase transitions are analyzed by conducting lattice correspondence analyses on the simulation results. Strain accommodation is also analyzed to explain the mechanisms for lattice reorientation and the intermediate phase transformations. In conclusion, the results provide new insight into the deformation behavior of HCP metals

Experimental observation of nonlinear relation between pressure and water flux is consistent with the solution-diffusion model

In several recent studies, it has been proposed that the fundamental understanding of penetrant transport in dense polymer membranes occurring via the solution-diffusion model, which has been the generally accepted theoretical framework for describing penetrant transport in such materials for the past several decades, is flawed. An alternate mechanistic framework based on the idea of two-phase flow in a porous medium (i.e., pore-flow) has been broadly advanced instead, with proponents of this approach claiming that the pore-flow theoretical framework provides the necessary mechanistic insight to design novel polymeric membrane materials for emerging applications. In this study, we show experimental results for hydraulic permeation of water that are entirely consistent with the solution-diffusion theory, without modification, for three dense polymeric membranes: crosslinked poly(ethylene glycol diacrylate) (XLPEGDA), Nafion 117 ionomer in the sodium counterion form (Nafion 117-Na), and cellulose acetate (CA). By measuring water flux at transmembrane pressures up to 240 bar, we observe a nonlinear relationship between the transmembrane pressure (TMP) and water flux, J w , for XLPEGDA and Nafion 117-Na, while this relationship is linear for CA. We demonstrate that the behavior of these three materials is described via the solution-diffusion model. According to the solution-diffusion model, flux is, to a good approximation, proportional to the transmembrane concentration difference induced by the pressure difference across the membrane, rather than to TMP itself. Water sorption isotherms are reported for all three materials. They further justify the nonlinear relationship between TMP and J w observed in XLPEGDA and Nafion 117-Na, emphasizing that the nonlinearity in the flux/TMP relationship stems from nonlinearities in the sorption isotherm with pressure. Additionally, the relationship between water flux and TMP can be predicted, a priori, with no adjustable parameters when a predictive model for the diffusion coefficient of water is employed in conjunction with the experimental water sorption isotherms in the solution-diffusion model. Furthermore, our results demonstrate the validity of the solution-diffusion model to describe transport of penetrants in dense polymer membranes, while highlighting the sensitivity of the solution-diffusion model to the many physical and mathematical simplifications commonly applied to the theory in literature.

Experimental observations of bifurcated power decay lengths in the near Scrape-Off Layer of ST40 High Field Spherical Tokamak

The scrape-off layer parallel heat flux decay lengths measured at ST40, a high field, low aspect ratio spherical tokamak, have been observed to bifurcate into two groups. The wide group follows established H-mode scalings (ranging between 2 to 8 mm) while the narrow group falls up to 10 times below these scalings (between 0.2 and 0.8 mm), being comparable to the ion total Larmor radius rather than the ion poloidal Larmor radius. The heat flux profiles of the latter group can only be described by a multi-exponential function, rather than the single exponential function convoluted with a Gaussian. The onset of the narrow scrape-off layer width is observed to be associated with suppressed magnetic fluctuations, suggesting reduced electromagnetic turbulence levels in the SOL.

Measurement of groomed jet substructure observables in p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 200 GeV with STAR

In this letter, measurements of the shared momentum fraction ( z g ) and the groomed jet radius ( R g ), as defined in the SoftDrop algorithm, are reported in p+p collisions at s = 200 GeV collected by the STAR experiment. These substructure observables are differentially measured for jets of varying resolution parameters from R = 0.2 – 0.6 in the transverse momentum range 15 < p T , jet < 60 GeV/ c . These studies show that, in the p T , jet range accessible at s = 200 GeV and with increasing jet resolution parameter and jet transverse momentum, the z g distribution asymptotically converges to the DGLAP splitting kernel for a quark radiating a gluon. The groomed jet radius measurements reflect a momentum-dependent narrowing of the jet structure for jets of a given resolution parameter, i.e., the larger the p T , jet , the narrower the first splitting. For the first time, these fully corrected measurements are compared to Monte Carlo generators with leading order QCD matrix elements and leading log in the parton shower, and to state-of-the-art theoretical calculations at next-to-leading-log accuracy. We observe that PYTHIA 6 with parameters tuned to reproduce RHIC measurements is able to quantitatively describe data, whereas PYTHIA 8 and HERWIG 7, tuned to reproduce LHC data, are unable to provide a simultaneous description of both z g and R g , resulting in opportunities for fine parameter tuning of these models for p+p collisions at RHIC energies. We also find that the theoretical calculations without non-perturbative corrections are able to qualitatively describe the trend in data for jets of large resolution parameters at high p T , jet , but fail at small jet resolution parameters and low jet transverse momenta.

Observation of electroweak W + W – pair production in association with two jets in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV

An observation is reported of the electroweak production of a W + W – pair in association with two jets, with both W bosons decaying leptonically. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb –1 of proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV, collected by the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. Events are selected by requiring exactly two opposite-sign leptons (electrons or muons) and two jets with large pseudorapidity separation and high dijet invariant mass. Events are categorized based on the flavor of the final-state leptons. A signal is observed with a significance of 5.6 standard deviations (5.2 expected) with respect to the background-only hypothesis. The measured fiducial cross section is 10.2 ± 2.0 fb and this value is consistent with the standard model prediction of 9.1 ± 0.6 fb.

Observation of four top quark production in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

The observation of the production of four top quarks in proton-proton collisions is reported, based on a data sample collected by the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 2016–2018 at the CERN LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb − 1 . Events with two same-sign, three, or four charged leptons (electrons and muons) and additional jets are analyzed. Compared to previous results in these channels, updated identification techniques for charged leptons and jets originating from the hadronization of b quarks, as well as a revised multivariate analysis strategy to distinguish the signal process from the main backgrounds, lead to an improved expected signal significance of 4.9 standard deviations above the background-only hypothesis. Four top quark production is observed with a significance of 5.6 standard deviations, and its cross section is measured to be 17.7 − 3.5 + 3.7 (stat) − 1.9 + 2.3 (syst) fb , in agreement with the available standard model predictions.

Events with a leptonically-decaying W boson and at least two photons are considered. The background-only hypothesis is rejected with an observed and expected significance of 5.6 standard deviations. The inclusive fiducial production cross section of W(eν)γγ and W(μν)γγ events is measured to be σ fid = 13.8 ± 1.1(stat) $^{+2.1}_{-2.0}$(syst) ± 0.1(lumi) fb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction.

Observation of three-proton-decaying resonant states in 21 Al

The structure of the proton-unbound nucleus 21 Al has been studied via proton transfer from a 9 Be target to a 20 Mg beam at E/A = 103 MeV. Three resonant states in 21 Al are identified by the invariant-mass reconstruction of 18 Ne + 3p events. The decay-energy spectra for the two subsystems of 21 Al , i.e. 18 Ne+ 1 p and 18 Ne+ 2 p , indicate that the observed resonant state with the lowest energy has decay branches consisting of three sequential steps of one-proton decay. Based on the ab initio and the distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) calculations, this resonant state at Ε ⁎ = 6.09(11) MeV likely has a spin-parity of (1/2 + - 7/2 + ). Meanwhile, the possibility that the observed resonant peak represents an admixture of several states cannot be ruled out. The good isospin-symmetry of the low-lying states with d 5/2 , d 3/2 configurations in the 21 Al- 21 O pair and the ab initio calculations indicate weak configuration mixing between the s - and d -orbital components. The systematics of experimental energy differences between the 5/2 + ground state and lowest-lying 3/2 + excited state for isotopes (isotones) of Z(N) = 13 suggest a likely semimagic nature of 21 Al.

Observation of W + W – γ production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector and constraints on anomalous quartic gauge-boson couplings

This Letter reports the observation of W + W – γ triboson production in 140 fb –1 of data collected by the ATLAS detector from proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV at the LHC. Events with an opposite-charge eμ pair, a high transverse-momentum photon, and significant missing transverse momentum are considered. The observed (expected) significance of the signal is 5.9 (6.0) standard deviations. The measured fiducial cross-section, defined for the W + W – γ → e ± μ ∓ $ν\bar{ν}$γ final state is 6.2 ± 0.8 (stat.) ± 0.6 (sys.) fb, in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 6.1$^{+1.0}_{–0.7}$ fb. Constraints on the Wilson coefficients of 13 dimension-8 operators describing physics beyond the Standard Model through anomalous quartic gauge-boson couplings are derived using the effective field theory framework.

Observation of $t\bar{t}γγ$ production at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents the first observation of top-quark pair production in association with two photons ($t\bar{t}γγ$). The measurement is performed in the single-lepton decay channel using proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb −1 recorded during Run 2 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The $t\bar{t}γγ$ production cross section, measured in a fiducial phase space based on particle-level kinematic criteria for the lepton, photons, and jets, is found to be 2.42$_{− 0.53}^{+ 0.58}$ fb , corresponding to an observed significance of 5.2 standard deviations. Additionally, the ratio of the production cross section of $t\bar{t}γγ$ to top-quark pair production in association with one photon is determined, yielding (3.30$_{− 0.65}^{+ 0.70}$) × 10 −3 .

Two-phase flow measurements and observations in a cooling panel of the reactor cavity cooling system

The analysis of the flow behavior within a cooling panel of a scaled water-cooled reactor cavity cooling system has been performed supported by high-resolution measurements of the void fraction at the risers’ outlet. The results have shown a stable, symmetric distribution of the flow through the risers during subcooled boiling conditions, characterized by small, slow bubbles with average void fraction lower than 0.3 for all risers. As the temperature increased to saturation, flow distribution appeared strongly asymmetrical and unstable, with peaks of void fraction as high as 0.9. Large, faster bubbles were observed during these peaks, immediately followed by flow of subcooled liquid water. Flow stagnation and inversion has also been observed. The high resolution void fraction results, complemented by the measurements of the coolant flow rate and temperatures, not only have further described the behavior of the system under hypothetical accident conditions, but represent a unique set of data to support the validation of system-level codes, and more advanced computational tools.

NASA's surface biology and geology designated observable: A perspective on surface imaging algorithms

The 2017-2027 National Academies' Decadal Survey, Thriving on Our Changing Planet, recommended Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) as a "Designated Targeted Observable" (DO). The SBG DO is based on the need for capabilities to acquire global, high spatial resolution, visible to shortwave infrared (VSWIR; 380 - 2500 nm; ~30 m pixel resolution) hyperspectral (imaging spectroscopy) and multispectral midwave and thermal infrared (MWIR: 3-5 µm; TIR: 8-12 µm; ~60 m pixel resolution) measurements with sub-monthly temporal revisits over terrestrial, freshwater, and coastal marine habitats. To address the various mission design needs, an SBG Algorithms Working Group of multidisciplinary researchers has been formed to review and evaluate the algorithms applicable to the SBG DO across a wide range of Earth science disciplines, including terrestrial and aquatic ecology, atmospheric science, geology, and hydrology. Here, we summarize current state-of-the-practice VSWIR and TIR algorithms that use airborne or orbital spectral imaging observations to address the SBG DO priorities identified by the Decadal Survey: (i) terrestrial vegetation physiology, functional traits, and health; (ii) inland and coastal aquatic ecosystems physiology, functional traits, and health; (iii) snow and ice accumulation, melting, and albedo; (iv) active surface composition (eruptions, landslides, evolving landscapes, hazard risks); (v) effects of changing land use on surface energy, water, momentum, and carbon fluxes; and (vi) managing agriculture, natural habitats, water use/quality, and urban development. We review existing algorithms in the following categories: snow/ice, aquatic environments, geology, and terrestrial vegetation, and summarize the community-state-of-practice in each category. Finally, this effort synthesizes the findings of more than 130 scientists.

Disorder trapping and formation of antiphase nanodomains in Ni 3 Sn: in situ observation and high resolution characterization

Rapid solidification of the intermetallic Ni 3 Sn compound from an undercooled liquid was investigated using time-resolved synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Primary growth of an ordered and a disordered cubic solid was observed in situ at a low and a high undercooling, respectively. The disordered cubic solid was reordered after rapid solidification and experienced a solid-state transformation in cooling. A HRTEM study revealed high density of crystal defects and nanodomains in the transformed matrix. A HAADFSTEM study determined that the nanodomains are antiphase domains with chemical disorder. These observations indicated a possibility of online control of mechanical properties in additively manufactured intermetallics.
