Shielding requirements for the Space Station habitability modules

The design, analysis, development, and tests of the total meteoroid/debris protection system for the Space Station Freedom habitability modules, such as the habitation module, the laboratory module, and the node structures, are described. Design requirements are discussed along with development efforts, including a combination of hypervelocity testing and analyses. Computer hydrocode analysis of hypervelocity impact phenomena associated with Space Station habitability structures is covered and the use of optimization techniques, engineering models, and parametric analyses is assessed. Explosive rail gun development efforts and protective capability and damage tolerance of multilayer insulation due to meteoroid/debris impact are considered. It is concluded that anticipated changes in the debris environment definition and requirements will require rescoping the tests and analysis required to develop a protection system.

Numerical simulation of 3-D Benard convection with gravitational modulation

In this numerical study, randomly and sinusoidally modulated gravitational fields imposed on three-dimensional Rayleigh-Benard convection are investigated in an effort to understand the effects of vibration (G-Jitter) on fluid systems. The time-dependent, Navier-Stokes equations and the energy equation with Boussinesq approximations are solved by a semi-implicit, pseudospectral procedure. An analysis of energy balances indicates that with increasing modulation amplitude, transition from synchronous to relaxation oscillation goes through the subharmonic response. Random modulations are found to be less stabilizing than sinusoidal and are shown to impose three-dimensionality on the flow for some parameter ranges both at terrestrial and zero base gravity conditions.

Space Station Freedom photovoltaic power module design status

Electric power generation for the Space Station Freedom will be provided by four photovoltaic (PV) power modules using silicon solar cells during phase I operation. Each PV power module requires two solar arrays with 32,800 solar cells generating 18.75 kW of dc power for a total of 75 kW. A portion of this power will be stored in nickel-hydrogen batteries for use during eclipse, and the balance will be processed and converted to 20 kHz ac power for distribution to end users through the power management and distribution system. The design incorporates an optimized thermal control system, pointing and tracking provision with the application of gimbals, and the use of orbital replacement units to achieve modularization. The design status of the PV power module, as derived from major trade studies, is discussed at hardware levels ranging from component to system. Details of the design are presented where appropriate.

Turbulence modulation effect on evaporating spray characterization

The effects of turbulence modulation on the evaporating spray characteristics of a liquid fuel jet are numerically investigated. Two modulation models are implemented into the k-epsilon two-equation model. The gas phase is solved by a pressure-based method on a Eulerian frame and droplets are solved by a stochastic discrete particle technique based on Lagrangian formulation. The k-epsilon models are used to characterize the time and length scales of the gas phase turbulence for droplet dispersions and droplet/turbulence interactions. The modulation models are found to have significant effects on gas phase dynamics, and are less important for the droplet dynamics. Numerical predictions are compared with the experimental data of Drallemier and Peters (1990).

The modulation of a radar signal from the ocean surface due to slope and hydrodynamic effects

The modulation of the signal level of a tower-based radar scatterometer illuminating a small area of the ocean surface is predicted from direct measurements of the hydrodynamic conditions of the ocean surface and compared with X band radar measurements taken simultaneously. The radar backscatter is assumed to be due to Bragg resonance between the signal and the ripple waves. The effects of the slope of the ocean surface due to passing long waves are modeled by converting a measured wave height series into a slope time series. Laser-slope-gauge measurements of the spectrum of the ripple waves that ride upon the long ocean waves are used to predict the hydrodynamic effects. Comparisons with the measured radar signal show that the slope modulation alone gives a poor prediction of the modulation. Inclusion of the hydrodynamic effects in the simulation appears more promising, although it also is not entirely successful with this data set.

Modulation and coding for satellite and space communications

Several modulation and coding advances supported by NASA are summarized. To support long-constraint-length convolutional code, a VLSI maximum-likelihood decoder, utilizing parallel processing techniques, which is being developed to decode convolutional codes of constraint length 15 and a code rate as low as 1/6 is discussed. A VLSI high-speed 8-b Reed-Solomon decoder which is being developed for advanced tracking and data relay satellite (ATDRS) applications is discussed. A 300-Mb/s modem with continuous phase modulation (CPM) and codings which is being developed for ATDRS is discussed. Trellis-coded modulation (TCM) techniques are discussed for satellite-based mobile communication applications.

Utilization of the Spacehab module as a microgravity carrier

Spacehab Incorporated has proposed the use of its mid-deck augmentation module as a near term microgravity test bed. The orbital flight dynamics and payload accommodation capabilities of a Space Shuttle with the Spacehad module were investigated to assess this proposal. It was found that the module will provide a 1 microG (32.2 x 10(exp 6) ft/sq sec) quasi-steady state environment for limited periods of time when the shuttle is actively controlled. A passively stable attitude will provide a 4 microG environment for longer periods. Shuttle imposed constraints on the composite payload center of gravity, however, severely limit the possibilities for co-manifesting additional payloads. The analysis leading to those conclusions are detailed.

Algorithms for a very high speed universal noiseless coding module

The algorithmic definitions and performance characterizations are presented for a high performance adaptive coding module. Operation of at least one of these (single chip) implementations is expected to exceed 500 Mbits/s under laboratory conditions. Operation of a companion decoding module should operate at up to half the coder's rate. The module incorporates a powerful noiseless coder for Standard Form Data Sources (i.e., sources whose symbols can be represented by uncorrelated non-negative integers where the smaller integers are more likely than the larger ones). Performance close to data entropies can be expected over a Dynamic Range of from 1.5 to 12 to 14 bits/sample (depending on the implementation).

Development of a stable electro-optical modulator

The electrical/optical characteristics of longitudinal KD*P (KD2PO4) modulators were studied to determine what physical construction would be best for use in the MSFC (Marshall Space Flight Center) vector magnetograph. Obtaining high quality KD*P modulators that could withstand the DC modulation requirement of the MSFC vector magnetograph has, in the past, been at best a game of chance. A study is summarized which investigated problems that were seen in these devices and the conclusions that were reached are presented.

Evidence of a transverse Langmuir modulational instability in a space plasma

The auroral ionosphere Langmuir-wave electric field amplitude modulation observations presented may be accounted for by a transverse modulational instability that is resonant with lower hybrid of ion Bernstein waves. In independent observations, the modulation frequencies were near the characteristic frequencies of perpendicular modes. These data strongly suggest the need for two- or three-dimensional model descriptions of nonlinear Langmuir wave evolution in the low-beta plasma.

On multilevel block modulation codes

The multilevel (ML) technique for combining block coding and modulation is investigated. A general formulation is presented for ML modulation codes in terms of component codes with appropriate distance measures. A specific method for constructing ML block modulation codes (MLBMCs) with interdependency among component codes is proposed. Given an MLBMC C with no interdependency among the binary component codes, the proposed method gives an MLBC C-prime that has the same rate as C, a minimum squared Euclidean distance not less than that of C, a trellis diagram with the same number of states as that of C, and a smaller number of nearest-neighbor codewords than that of C. Finally, a technique is presented for analyzing the error performance of MLBMCs for an additive white Gaussian noise channel based on soft-decision maximum-likelihood decoding.

Multi-stage decoding of multi-level modulation codes

Various types of multi-stage decoding for multi-level modulation codes are investigated. It is shown that if the component codes of a multi-level modulation code and types of decoding at various stages are chosen properly, high spectral efficiency and large coding gain can be achieved with reduced decoding complexity. Particularly, it is shown that the difference in performance between the suboptimum multi-stage soft-decision maximum likelihood decoding of a modulation code and the single-stage optimum soft-decision decoding of the code is very small, only a fraction of dB loss in signal to noise ratio at a bit error rate (BER) of 10(exp -6).

Jitter model and signal processing techniques for pulse width modulation optical recording

A jitter model and signal processing techniques are discussed for data recovery in Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) optical recording. In PWM, information is stored through modulating sizes of sequential marks alternating in magnetic polarization or in material structure. Jitter, defined as the deviation from the original mark size in the time domain, will result in error detection if it is excessively large. A new approach is taken in data recovery by first using a high speed counter clock to convert time marks to amplitude marks, and signal processing techniques are used to minimize jitter according to the jitter model. The signal processing techniques include motor speed and intersymbol interference equalization, differential and additive detection, and differential and additive modulation.
