Long-lived oscillations of metastable states in neutral atom systems

Metastable states arise in a range of quantum systems and can be observed in various dynamical scenarios, including decay, bubble nucleation, and long-lived oscillations. The phenomenology of metastable states has been examined in quantum many-body systems, notably in one-dimensional (1D) ferromagnetic Ising spin systems and superfluids. Here, in this paper, we study long-lived oscillations of metastable and ground states in 1D antiferromagnetic neutral atom chains with long-range Rydberg interactions. We use a staggered local detuning field to achieve confinement. Using theoretical and numerical models, we identify novel spectral signatures of quasiparticle oscillations distinct to antiferromagnetic neutral atom systems and interpret them using a classical energy model of short-range meson repulsion. Finally, we evaluate the experimental accessibility of our proposed setup on current neutral-Atom platforms and discuss experimental feasibility and constraints.

Elliptic flow coalescence to identify the $f_0$(980) content

Here we use a simple coalescence model to generate $f_0$(980) particles for three configurations: a $s\bar{s}$ meson, a $u\bar{u}s\bar{s}$ tetraquark, and a $K^+K^–$ molecule. The phase-space information of the coalescing constituents is taken from a multiphase transport (AMPT) simulation of heavy-ion collisions. It is shown that the number of constituent quarks scaling of the elliptic flow anisotropy can be used to discern $s\bar{s}$ from $u\bar{u}s\bar{s}$ and $K^+K^–$ configurations.

Strange hadron production in $pp$ and $p$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The transverse momentum ( p T ) distributions of Λ , Ξ - , and Ω - baryons, their antiparticles, and K S 0 mesons are measured in proton-proton ( p p ) and proton-lead ( p Pb ) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV over a broad rapidity range. The data, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 40.2 nb - 1 and 15.6 μ b - 1 for p p and p Pb collisions, respectively, were collected by the CMS experiment. The nuclear modification factor R p Pb , which is defined as the ratio of the particle yield in p Pb collisions and a scaled p p reference, is measured for each particle. A strong dependence on particle species is observed in the p T range from 2 to 7 GeV, where R p Pb for K S 0 is consistent with unity, while an enhancement ordered by strangeness content and/or particle mass is observed for the three baryons. In p Pb collisions, the strange hadron production is asymmetric about the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass rapidity. Enhancements, which depend on the particle type, are observed in the direction of the Pb beam. The results are compared with predictions from epos lhc , which includes parametrized radial flow. The model is in qualitative agreement with the R p Pb data, but fails to describe the dependence on particle species in the yield asymmetries measured away from midrapidity in p Pb collisions.

Two-photon exchange from intermediate state resonances in elastic electron-proton scattering

In this paper, we use a recently developed dispersive approach to compute the two-photon exchange (TPE) correction to elastic electron-proton scattering, including contributions from hadronic $J^P=1/2^\pm$ and $3/2^\pm$ resonant intermediate states below~1.8~GeV. For the transition amplitudes from the proton ground state to the resonant excited states we employ new exclusive meson electroproduction data from CLAS at $Q^2 \lesssim 5$~GeV$^2$, and we explore the effects of both fixed and dynamic widths for the resonances. Among the resonant states, the $N(1520)~\!3/2^-$ becomes dominant for $Q^2 \gtrsim 2$~GeV$^2$, with a sign opposite to the comparably sized $\Delta(1232)~\!3/2^+$ contribution, leading to an overall increase in the size of the TPE correction to the cross section relative to the nucleon only contribution at higher $Q^2$ values. The results are in good overall agreement with recent $e^+ p$ to $e^- p$ cross section ratio and polarization transfer measurements, and provide compelling evidence for a resolution of the electric to magnetic form factor ratio discrepancy.

Isotopic equilibrium constants for very low-density and low-temperature nuclear matter

Yields of equatorially emitted light isotopes, 1 ≤ Z ≤ 14, observed in ternary fission in the reaction 241 Pu(n th, f) are employed to determine apparent chemical equilibrium constants for low-temperature and low-density nuclear matter. The degree of equilibration and role of medium modifications are probed through a comparison of experimentally derived reaction quotients with equilibrium constants calculated using a relativistic mean-field model employing a universal medium modification correction for the attractive σ meson coupling. The results of these comparisons indicate that equilibrium is achieved for the lighter ternary fission isotopes. For the heavier isotopes experimental reaction quotients are well below calculated equilibrium constants. This is attributed to a dynamical limitation reflecting insufficient time for full equilibrium to develop. The role of medium effects leading to yield reductions is discussed as is the apparent enhancement of yields for 8 He and other very neutron rich exotic nuclei.

First measurement of the asymmetry and the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integrand from the 3 $\vec{H}$e ($\vec{γ},p$) 2 H reaction at an incident photon energy of 29 MeV

The first measurement of the 3 $\vec{H}$e ($\vec{γ},p$) 2 H process was performed at the High Intensity γ-ray Source ( HIγS ) facility at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory using a circularly polarized, monoenergetic γ -ray beam and a longitudinally polarized 3 He target. The spin-dependent asymmetry and the contribution from the two-body photodisintegration to the 3 He Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integrand are extracted and compared with state-of-the-art three-nucleon system calculations at the incident photon energy of 29 MeV. The data are in general agreement with the various theoretical predictions based on the Siegert theorem or on explicit inclusion of meson-exchange currents.

Strangeness-changing rates and hyperonic bulk viscosity in neutron star mergers

In this paper we present a computation of the rates of strangeness-changing processes and the resultant bulk viscosity in matter at the densities and temperatures typical of neutron star mergers. To deal with the high temperature in this environment we go beyond the Fermi surface approximation in our rate calculations and numerically evaluate the full phase space integral. Here, we include processes where quarks move between baryons via meson exchange: these have generally been omitted in previous analyses but provide the dominant contribution to the rates of strangeness-changing processes and the bulk viscosity. The calculation of these rates is an essential step towards any calculation of dissipation mechanisms in hyperonic matter in mergers. As one application, we calculate the dissipation times for density oscillations at the frequencies seen in merger simulations. We find that hyperon bulk viscosity for temperatures in the MeV regime can probably be neglected in this context, but becomes highly relevant for keV-range temperatures.

Color transparency and the proton form factor: Evidence for the Feynman mechanism

A recent experiment by D. Bhetuwal et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 082301 (2021)] used the (e,e'p) reaction on 12 C to search for the effects of color transparency (the absence of final-state interactions). Color transparency was said to be ruled out. Observing the effects of color transparency depends on the ability of a putative point-like-configuration (PLC), formed in a high-momentum transfer coherent reaction, to escape the nucleus without expanding its size. Here, we study the expansion aspect of color transparency using superconformal baryon-meson symmetry and light-front holographic QCD. A new formalism is obtained and used to analyze the recent experiment. The resulting conclusion is that effects of expansion would not be sufficiently significant in causing final-state interactions to occur. Therefore, we conclude that a PLC was not formed. In conclusion, this means that the Feynman mechanism involving virtual photon absorption on a single high-momentum quark is responsible for the high-momentum electromagnetic form factor of the proton.

Centrality and transverse-momentum dependence of higher-order flow harmonics of identified hadrons in Au+Au collisions at s N N = 200 GeV

Here we present high-precision measurements of elliptic, triangular, and quadrangular flow v 2 , v 3 , and v 4 , respectively, at midrapidity for identified hadrons π, p, K, φ, K s , Λ as a function of centrality and transverse momentum in Au+Au collisions at the center-of-mass energy √ s NN = 200 GeV. We observe similar v n trends between light and strange mesons which indicates that the heavier strange quarks flow as strongly as the lighter up and down quarks. The number-of-constituent-quark scaling for v 2 , v 3 , and v 4 is found to hold within statistical uncertainty for 0–10%, 10–40%, and 40–80% collision centrality intervals. The results are compared to several viscous hydrodynamic calculations with varying initial conditions, and could serve as an additional constraint to the development of hydrodynamic models.

Evidence for a QCD accelerator in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Here, we report measurements of forward jets produced in Cu + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s{NN}}$=200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The jet-energy distributions extend to energies much larger than expected by Feynman scaling. This constitutes the first clear evidence for Feynman-scaling violations in heavy-ion collisions. Such high-energy particle production has been in models via QCD string interactions, but so far is untested by experiment. One such model calls this a hadronic accelerator. Studies with a particular heavy-ion event generator ( HIJING ) show that photons and mesons exhibit such very high-energy production in a heavy-ion collision, so a QCD accelerator appropriately captures the physics associated with such QCD string interactions. All models other than HIJING used for hadronic interactions in the study of extensive air showers from cosmic rays either do not include these QCD string interactions or have smaller effects from the QCD accelerator.

$K^{*0}$ production in $\text{Au} \times \text{Au}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 7.7$, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27, and 39 GeV from the RHIC beam energy scan

We report the measurement of K *0 meson at midrapidity (|y|< 1.0) in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27 and 39 GeV collected by the STAR experiment during the RHIC beam energy scan (BES) program. The transverse momentum spectra, yield, and average transverse momentum of K *0 are presented as functions of collision centrality and beam energy. The K *0 /K yield ratios are presented for different collision centrality intervals and beam energies. The K *0 /K ratio in heavy-ion collisions are observed to be smaller than that in small system collisions (e+e and p+p). The K *0 /K ratio follows a similar centrality dependence to that observed in previous RHIC and LHC measurements. The data favor the scenario of the dominance of hadronic re-scattering over regeneration for K *0 production in the hadronic phase of the medium.

Multiscale evolution of charmed particles in a nuclear medium

Parton energy-momentum exchange with the quark gluon plasma (QGP) is a multiscale problem. In this work, we calculate the interaction of charm quarks with the QGP within the higher twist formalism at high virtuality and high energy using the Modular All Twist Transverse-scattering Elastic-drag and Radiation (MATTER) model, while the low-virtuality and high-energy portion is treated via a linearized Boltzmann transport formalism. Coherence effect that reduces the medium-induced emission rate in the MATTER model is also taken into account through a virtuality-dependent qˆ, leaving the simultaneous dependence of qˆ on heavy quark mass and virtuality for future studies. The interplay between these two formalisms is studied phenomenologically and used to produce a first description of the D-meson and charged hadron nuclear modification factor R AA across multiple centralities. As a result, all calculations were carried out utilizing the Jet Energy-loss Tomography with a Statistically and Computationally Advanced Program Envelope framework.

Toward a unified treatment of Δ S = 0 parity violation in low-energy nuclear processes

We revisit the unified treatment of low-energy hadronic parity violation espoused by Desplanques, Donoghue, and Holstein to the end of an ab initio treatment of parity violation in low-energy nuclear processes within the standard model. Here, we use our improved effective Hamiltonian and precise nonperturbative assessments of the quark charges of the nucleon within lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) to make new assessments of the parity-violating meson-nucleon coupling constants. Comparing with recent, precise measurements of hadronic parity violation in few-body nuclear reactions, we find improved agreement with these experimental results, though some tensions remain. We thus note the broader problem of comparing low-energy constants from nuclear and few-nucleon systems, considering, too, unresolved theoretical issues in connecting an ab initio, effective Hamiltonian approach to chiral effective theories. We note how future experiments and lattice QCD studies could sharpen the emerging picture, promoting the study of hadronic parity violation as a laboratory for testing “end-to-end” theoretical descriptions of weak processes in hadrons and nuclei at low energies.

First measurement of Λ c + production down to p T = 0 in p p and p -Pb collisions at s N N = 5.02 TeV

The production of prompt $Λ_{c}^{+}$ baryons has been measured at midrapidity in the transverse momentum interval 0 < p T < 1 GeV/c for the first time, in pp and p–Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV . The measurement was performed in the decay channel $Λ_{c}^{+}$ → p$K_{S}^{0}$ by applying new decay reconstruction techniques using a Kalman-Filter vertexing algorithm and adopting a machine-learning approach for the candidate selection. The p T -integrated $Λ_{c}^{+}$ production cross sections in both collision systems were determined and used along with the measured yields in Pb–Pb collisions to compute the p T -integrated nuclear modification factors R pPb and R AA of $Λ_{c}^{+}$ baryons, which are compared to model calculations that consider nuclear modification of the parton distribution functions. The $Λ_{c}^{+}$/D 0 baryon-to-meson yield ratio is reported for pp and p–Pb collisions. Comparisons with models that include modified hadronization processes are presented, and the implications of the results on the understanding of charm hadronization in hadronic collisions are discussed. A significant (3.7σ) modification of the mean transverse momentum of $Λ_{c}^{+}$ baryons is seen in p –Pb collisions with respect to pp collisions, while the p T -integrated $Λ_{c}^{+}$/D 0 yield ratio was found to be consistent between the two collision systems within the uncertainties.

Semirelativistic antisymmetrized molecular dynamics for the production of energetic neutrons in intermediate-energy heavy-ion reactions

Relativistic corrections have been made in the nonrelativistic antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (amd) simulations to apply to the high-energy neutron production in the 12 C + 12 C and 16 O + 12 C collisions at incident energies of 290 and 400 MeV/nucleon. The corrections are made in kinematics alone and neither nucleon-nucleon inelastic scatterings nor meson productions are taken into account, and amd with the relativistic corrections is called semirelativistic amd. The three-nucleon collision (3NC) and Fermi boost in the collision processes are taken into account in the nonrelativistic AMD. Since the relativistic corrections tend to compensate in each other, the difference between the semirelativistic and nonrelativistic results become small. High-energy tails of the available experimental neutron double-differential cross sections, especially at larger angles, are well reproduced by amd with the 3NC term both with nonrelativistic and semirelativistic simulations. Furthermore, these results indicate that the high-energy neutrons are dominantly produced by the 3NC process in this incident energy range.

Composite octet baryons in a relativistic mean field description of nuclear and neutron star matter

Here, we examine the properties of composite octet baryons in the nuclear medium and neutron-star matter. The internal quark-diquark structure of the octet baryons and the equations of state of nuclear matter and neutron-star matter in the mean field approximation are described by using the three-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model as an effective quark theory of quantum chromodynamics. After introducing our model, we first discuss the properties of single baryons and their effective meson exchange interactions in symmetric nuclear matter by using concepts of Fermi-liquid theory. Several model-independent implications of this description are derived and illustrated by numerical results obtained in our model. Second, we extend the model description to high baryon densities and investigate the equation of state of neutron-star matter and the resulting star masses. We find that the so-called hyperon puzzle persists also for the case of composite hadrons. To get more information on this point, we also investigate the role of 6-Fermi and 8-Fermi interactions, in addition to the standard 4-Fermi interactions. The strengths of those higher-order Fermi interactions is determined so as not to spoil the saturation properties of nuclear matter. Among them, an interaction characterized by a product of four-quark current operators plays a special role to stabilize the stars over a large region of central baryon densities, although it has little effect on the maximum star masses.

K ∗ (892) ± resonance production in Pb−Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The production of K *⁢(892) ± meson resonance is measured at midrapidity (| y |<0.5) in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{^sNN}$ = 5.02 TeV using the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The resonance is reconstructed via its hadronic decay channel K *⁢(892) ± → K $^0_S$⁢π ± . The transverse momentum distributions are obtained for various centrality intervals in the p T range of 0.4-16 GeV/ c . Measurements of integrated yields, mean transverse momenta, and particle yield ratios are reported and found to be consistent with previous ALICE measurements for K *⁢(892) 0 within uncertainties. The p T -integrated yield ratio 2 K *⁢(892) ± ⁢/(⁢ K + + K - ) in central Pb-Pb collisions shows a significant suppression at a level of 9.3σ⁢ relative to pp collisions. Thermal model calculations result in an overprediction of the particle yield ratio. Although both hadron resonance gas in partial chemical equilibrium (HRG-PCE) and MUSIC + SMASH simulations consider the hadronic phase, only HRG-PCE accurately represents the measurements, whereas MUSIC + SMASH simulations tend to overpredict the particle yield ratio. These observations, along with the kinetic freeze-out temperatures extracted from the yields measured for light-flavored hadrons using the HRG-PCE model, indicate a finite hadronic phase lifetime, which decreases with increasing collision centrality percentile. The p T-differential yield ratios 2 K *⁢(892) ±⁢ /(⁢ K + + K - ) and 2 K *⁢(892) ± ⁢/(⁢π + +π - ) are presented and compared with measurements in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV. Both particle ratios are found to be suppressed by up to a factor of five at p T <2.0 GeV/ c in central Pb-Pb collisions and are qualitatively consistent with expectations for rescattering effects in the hadronic phase. The nuclear modification factor ( R AA ) shows a smooth evolution with centrality and is found to be below unity at p T >8 GeV/ c , consistent with measurements for other light-flavored hadrons. The smallest values are observed in most central collisions, indicating larger energy loss of partons traversing the dense medium.

New metric improving Bayesian calibration of a multistage approach studying hadron and inclusive jet suppression

We study parton energy-momentum exchange with the quark gluon plasma (QGP) within a multistage approach composed of in-medium Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi evolution at high virtuality, and (linearized) Boltzmann transport formalism at lower virtuality. This multistage simulation is then calibrated in comparison with high- p T charged hadrons, D mesons, and the inclusive jet nuclear modification factors, using Bayesian model-to-data comparison, to extract the virtuality-dependent transverse momentum broadening transport coefficient q ̂ . To facilitate this undertaking, we develop a quantitative metric for validating the Bayesian workflow, which is used to analyze the sensitivity of various model parameters to individual observables. The usefulness of this new metric in improving Bayesian model emulation is shown to be highly beneficial for future such analyses. Published by the American Physical Society 2024
