Search for B 0 → K *0 𝜏 + ⁢𝜏 − Decays at the Belle II Experiment

We present a search for the rare flavor-changing neutral-current decay 𝐵 0 →𝐾 *0 ⁢𝜏 + ⁢𝜏 − with data collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider. The analysis uses a 365 fb −1 data sample recorded at the center-of-mass energy of the ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆) resonance. One of the 𝐵 mesons produced in the ϒ⁡(4⁢𝑆)→𝐵 0 $⁢\overline{𝐵}$ 0 process is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode, while its companion 𝐵 meson is required to decay into a 𝐾 *0 and two 𝜏 leptons of opposite charge. The 𝜏 leptons are reconstructed in final states with a single electron, muon, charged pion or charged 𝜌 meson, and additional neutrinos. We set an upper limit on the branching fraction of ℬ⁡(𝐵 0 →𝐾 *0 ⁢𝜏 + ⁢𝜏 − )<1.8×10 −3 at the 90% confidence level, which is the most stringent constraint reported to date.

Atomic‐Scale Surface Imaging of Bulk Epitaxial CsPbBr 3 Perovskite Single Crystals on Mica Using Light Assisted Scanning Tunneling Microscopy at Low‐Temperature (80 K)

Epitaxial single-crystalline CsPbBr 3 perovskite films on mica, prepared ex situ, are explored using a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM) by probing the unoccupied electronic states of their surface in ultra-high vacuum (UHV) at 80 K. Light-assisted STM measurements under a broadband illumination with visible light were employed to enhance and stabilize surface conductivity. STM imaging across the surface of macroscopic bulk CsPbBr 3 films reveals large flat terraces characterized by a specific type of surface reconstruction, consisting of parallel rows of U-shaped atomic nanostructures. These structures are spaced by 12 Å and exhibit an internal feature size of 5.1 Å. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reproduce the experimental observations and reveal a competition between different orthorhombic CsPbBr 3 (110) surface reconstructions: a Cs-rich structure, identified as the most energetically stable, and three alternative Pb–Br-rich reconstructions, which are slightly higher in energy yet remain consistent with the STM data. Additional analyses that explicitly account for the mica substrate exclude the cubic CsPbBr 3 phase and other orthorhombic surface orientations, while showing that variations in the mica surface termination do not alter the preferred CsPbBr 3 (110) reconstruction. In conclusion, this combined approach thereby confirms our assignment and resolves previous STM interpretations of CsPbBr 3 .

The Role of Transition Metals on Chemo-Mechanical Instabilities in Prussian Blue Analogues For K-Ion Batteries: The Case Study on KNHCF Versus KMHCF

Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) cathodes can host diverse monovalent and multivalent metal ions due to their tunable structure. However, their electrochemical performance suffers from poor cycle life associated with chemo-mechanical instabilities. This study investigates the driving forces behind chemo-mechanical instabilities in Ni- and Mn-based PBAs cathodes for K-ion batteries by combining electrochemical analysis, digital image correlation, and spectroscopy techniques. Capacity retention in Ni-based PBA is 96% whereas it is 91.5% for Mn-based PBA after 100 cycles at C/5 rate. During charge, the potassium nickel hexacyanoferrate (KNHCF) electrode experiences a positive strain generation whereas the potassium manganese hexacyanoferrate (KMHCF) electrode undergoes initially positive strain generation followed by a reduction in strains at a higher state of charge. Overall, both cathodes undergo similar reversible electrochemical strains in each charge–discharge cycle. There is ~0.80% irreversible strain generation in both cathodes after 5 cycles. XPS studies indicated richer organic layer compounds in the cathode-electrolyte interface (CEI) layer formed on KMHCF cathodes compared to the KNHCF ones. Faster capacity fades in Mn-based PBA, compared to Ni-based ones, is attributed to the formation of richer organic compounds in CEI layers, rather than mechanical deformations. In conclusion, understanding the driving forces behind instabilities provides a guideline to develop material-based strategies for better electrochemical performance.

Rheological and Structural Properties of k‐Carrageenan/Xanthan Gum Gummies Architected With a New Natural Additive

ABSTRACT Biohybrids (BHs)based on bentonite and anthocyanins can be produced as alternatives to synthetic colorants. However, no information is available on the interaction of biohybrid with food system. This research studies the rheological properties of gummies containing k‐carrageenan and xanthan gum incorporated with a BH. The incorporation of BH (≤ 2% w/w) increased the flow consistency index and shear thinning effect in melted gummies at 85°C. During cooling from 90°C to 25°C, the presence of BH altered the sol–gel transition temperature typical in carrageenan systems, probably by the formation of carrageenan complexes. At 25°C, all gummies had a solid‐like response with elastic modulus ( G ') higher than viscous modulus ( G "). G ' values increased linearly with BH concentration, and the linear viscoelastic region and breaking strain decreased with BH concentration, indicating that this natural additive acted as a reinforcing material.

The three-pion K -matrix at NLO in ChPT

The three-particle K-matrix, Κ df,3 , is a scheme-dependent quantity that parametrizes short-range three-particle interactions in the relativistic-field-theory three-particle finite-volume formalism. In this work, we compute its value for systems of three pions in all isospin channels through next-to-leading order in Chiral Perturbation Theory, generalizing previous work done at maximum isospin. We obtain analytic expressions through quadratic order (or cubic order, in the case of zero isospin) in the expansion about the three-pion threshold.

Measurement of the $B^0_\mathrm{s}\to J/\psi K^0_\mathrm{S}$ effective lifetime from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV

The effective lifetime of the $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $ meson in the decay $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0\to \textrm{J}/{\uppsi \textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $ is measured using data collected during 2016–2018 with the CMS detector in $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb$^{−1}$. The effective lifetime is determined by performing a two-dimensional unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the $ {\textrm{B}}_{\textrm{s}}^0 $ meson invariant mass and proper decay time distributions. The resulting value of 1.59 ± 0.07(stat) ± 0.03(syst) ps is the most precise measurement to date and is in good agreement with the expected value.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Dependence of inclusive jet production on the anti-k$_{T}$ distance parameter in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{\mathrm{s}} $ = 13 TeV

The dependence of inclusive jet production in proton-proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV on the distance parameter R of the anti-k$_{T}$ algorithm is studied using data corresponding to integrated luminosities up to 35.9 fb$^{−1}$ collected by the CMS experiment in 2016. The ratios of the inclusive cross sections as functions of transverse momentum p$_{T}$ and rapidity y, for R in the range 0.1 to 1.2 to those using R = 0.4 are presented in the region 84 < p$_{T}$< 1588 GeV and |y|< 2.0. The results are compared to calculations at leading and next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant using different parton shower models. The variation of the ratio of cross sections with R is well described by calculations including a parton shower model, but not by a leading-order quantum chromodynamics calculation including nonperturbative effects. The agreement between the data and the theoretical predictions for the ratios of cross sections is significantly improved when next-to-leading order calculations with nonperturbative effects are used.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Influence of ion site occupancies on the unit cell parameters, specific volumes, and densities of M 8 (AlSiO 4 ) 6 X 2 sodalites where M = Li, Na, K, Rb, and Ag and X = Cl, Br, and I

Here, this paper discusses the effects of composition on the unit cell parameter (a), unit cell volume (V), specific volume (v), and density (ρ) of various sodalite compositions including $M^+_8$(AlSiO 4 ) 6 Cl 2 (M = Li, Na, K, Rb, and/or Ag) and Na8(AlSiO 4 ) 6 $X^-_2$(X = Cl, Br, and/or I). Compositional models were developed, and the results show that the models are successful at predicting a, V, and v (and thus ρ) within the compositional range available in the literature. Discussion is included on the correlation between the ionic radii of the alkali metals and halides in the sodalite β-cages and the measured values of a, V, v, and ρ. The data show linear increases in a and ρ with increases in the average ionic radii of the M + and X - constituents (data for v show a linear decrease).

Mutual Diffusion Coefficients of Na 2 SO 4 at C = 0.02989 mol·dm -3 and 298.15 K by Using Rayleigh Interferometry with Free Diffusion Boundary Conditions: Experimental Test of the Effect of the C 3/2 Concentration Dependence of Refractive Index at Low Concentration

Rayleigh interferometry is one of the most precise and accurate methods for the experimental determination of the mutual diffusion coefficients of both electrolytes and non-electrolytes in liquid solutions. For binary solutions at moderate and high concentrations where the concentration dependences of both diffusion coefficient and refractive index can be assumed to be linear or almost linear and the concentration difference ΔC between a pair of solutions undergoing free diffusion is not large compared to their average concentration, and by using proper combinations of the interference fringe positions as they vary with time, under these conditions diffusion coefficients are obtained that are independent of the size of ΔC. However, this situation becomes more complicated at low concentrations for electrolyte solutions where the concentration dependences of both the diffusion coefficient and refractive index are non-linear, with C 1/2 dependence for the diffusion coefficient and C 3/2 dependence for the refractive index. As a test of these effects on calculated mutual diffusion of electrolyte solutions at low concentrations as measured by Rayleigh interferometry, apparent mutual diffusion coefficients D v,a (volume-fixed reference frame) were measured for fixed average concentrations C=(0.02989 ± 0.00001) mol·dm –3 of Na 2 SO 4 (aq) at 298.15 K while varying ΔC/C from 0.66673 to 2, a threefold variation. The dependence of the diffusion coefficient on ΔC/C was found to be linear, yielding D v = 1.041 6 × 10 –9 m 2 ·s –1 for an infinitely small concentration difference between the diffusing solutions.

High Strain Response and Dielectric Properties of Bi 1/2 (Na 0.78 K 0.22 ) 1/2 TiO 3 Ceramics Doped with (Fe 1/2 Nb 1/2 ) 4+

Environmentally friendly piezoceramics Bi 1/2 (Na 0.78 K 0.22 ) 1/2 Ti 1-x (Fe 1/2 Nb 1/2 ) x O 3 (BNKT-FN) with FeNb (FN) ratios 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03 and 0.04 were synthesized via conventional solid-state reaction (CSSR). X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that the FN complexes were completely dissolved in BNKT perovskite and the structural transition occurred from ferroelectric to relaxor state. The average grain sizes for x = 0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03 and 0.04 were found to be 0.34 μm, 0.35 μm, 0.38 μm, 0.32 μm and 0.39 μm, respectively. It is observed that the grain size increased with the addition of FN, except for x = 0.03. Here, the coercive field (E c ) and remnant polarization (P r ) of the system were decreased with increasing FN concentration and the highest E c of 21.1 kV/cm and P r of 29.2 μC/cm 2 were noted for the base pure sample. In addition, the increase of FN content steadily broadened the dielectric anomaly at maximum dielectric constant temperature (T m ) in the BNKT-FN system. Consequently, unipolar normalized strain (S max /E max ) was found to be enhanced monotonically achieving the highest value of around 654 pm/V (x = 0.02). These properties suggest that the investigated system could be a promising eco-friendly candidate for piezoelectric actuators and many other applications requiring high piezoelectric induced strain.

Electronic structural and lattice thermodynamic properties of MAlO2 and M5AlO4 (M = Li, Na, K) sorbents for CO2 capture applications

Abstract The electronic properties and thermal stabilities of MAlO 2 and M 5 AlO 4 (M = Li, Na, K) are investigated by density functional theory and lattice phonon dynamics. Based on the calculated electronic and lattice thermodynamic properties, their abilities to capture CO 2 as solid sorbents are analyzed. The calculated electronic structural properties of MAlO 2 and M 5 AlO 4 indicate that all these alkali aluminates are semiconductors with a bandgap range of 2.4 ~ 6.4 eV. The 1st valence bands of these alkali aluminates are located 0 ~ − 6 eV under Fermi levels and are mainly contributed by p orbitals of O, s and p orbitals of Al and M. The phonon vibrational frequencies of M 5 AlO 4 spread at a lower frequency range compared to their MAlO 2 phases. With increasing temperature, the calculated phonon free energies of M 5 AlO 4 decrease faster than their corresponding MAlO 2 while their entropies have opposite trends. The reaction 2MAlO 2 + CO 2 = M 2 CO 3 + Al 2 O 3 has higher reaction heat and Gibbs free energy change than those of corresponding reaction 2 / 5 M 5 AlO 4 + CO 2 = M 2 CO 3 + 1 / 5 Al 2 O 3 , which shows the former reaction possesses lower turnover temperature. Among the alkali aluminates studied, the β-NaAlO 2 , lt-KAlO 2 , and γ-LiAlO 2 are better candidates that could be applied for CO 2 capture technologies. Graphical Abstract

Phase-field simulation of domain size effect on dielectric and piezoelectric responses in K 0.5 Na 0.5 NbO 3 epitaxial thin films with superdomain structures

Size effects of mesoscale ferroelectric domains on the macroscopic dielectric and piezoelectric responses in domain-engineered bulk piezocrystals have been extensively studied for more than two decades. However, less is known about the domain size effects in ferroelectric epitaxial thin films, especially for films consisting of low-symmetry ferroelectric phases and exhibits hierarchical superdomain structures. Herein, using phase-field simulations, we systemically evaluate the effective out-of-plane dielectric and piezoelectric coefficients, κ$^{*}_{33}$ and d$^{*}_{33}$, as a function of the domain periods for two types of superdomain structures in ferroelectric K 0.5 Na 0.5 NbO 3 epitaxial thin films. In one type of the superdomain structures, we find that more than 70% increase of κ$^{*}_{33}$ and nearly 20% increase of d$^{*}_{33}$ can be achieved by tuning the domain period by a few tens of nanometers. Dissimilar behaviors are found when the domain period varies along different lateral directions, suggesting anisotropic domain size effects in thin films. By analyzing the local dielectric and piezoelectric responses from each domain variants and domain walls, we reveal that the domain size effect is governed by the variation of out-of-plane polarization inside the domains. Moreover, we also demonstrate enhanced domain size effects by modulating the misfit strains and temperature to approach the polymorphic phase boundaries, suggesting tunability of the size effect by doping and strain engineering. Furthermore, our results reveal multimodal domain size dependence of dielectric and piezoelectric responses in low-symmetry ferroelectric epitaxial thin films, implying that domain size engineering can be used to tune macroscopic properties of thin-film ferroelectrics, similar to their bulk counterparts.

Genuine k -partite correlations and entanglement in the ground state of the Dicke model for interacting qubits

Here, in this work, we calculate and study correlations of the Dicke model in the presence of qubit–qubit interaction. Whereas the analysis of correlations among its subsystems is essential for the understanding of corresponding critical phenomena and for performing quantum information tasks, the majority of correlation measures are restricted to bipartitions due to the inherent challenges associated with handling multiple partitions. To circunvent this we employ the calculation of Genuine Multipartite Correlations (GMC) based on the invariance of our model under particle permutation. We then quantify the correlations within each subpart of the system, as well as the percentage contribution of each GMC of order $k$, highlighting the many-body behaviors for different regimes of parameters. Additionally, we show that GMC signal both first- and second-order quantum phase transitions present in the model. Furthermore, as GMC encompasses both classical and quantum correlations, we employ Quantum Fisher Information (QFI) to detect genuine multipartite entanglement. Ultimately, we map the Dicke model with interacting qubits to spin in solids interacting with a quantum field of magnons, thus demonstrating a potential experimental realization of this model.

Low temperature water-gas shift: Optimization of K loading on Pt/m-ZrO 2 for enhancing CO conversion

Previous work showed that alkali doping of Pt/ZrO 2 significantly improved the LT-WGS rate. This improvement was caused by an acceleration in the rate of formate decomposition, the rate limiting step of an associative mechanism, through electronically weakening the CH bond. In this study, the effects that potassium loading on Pt/ZrO 2 have on the rate of LT-WGS and the strength of the CH bond in intermediate formate species are explored. Catalysts were investigated using in-situ DRIFTS, TPR-MS, TPD, EXAFS, and catalyst testing. Here, loadings of 1.7 wt.% potassium or higher shifted the formate ν(CH) band to significantly lower wavenumbers, indicating weakening of the bond. For the optimal loading, 2.6 wt.% K, the formate CH bond was significantly weakened, and the surface of Pt nanoparticles remained largely uncovered. However, loadings of 3.4 wt. % and above blocked the surface of the platinum nanoparticles. This, in addition to an increasing average Pt0 cluster size, hindered platinum from assisting in dehydrogenation of formate during steam promoted formate decomposition occurring in LT-WGS.

Local structure analysis of low-temperature neutron pair distribution function coupled with molecular dynamics simulations of CH 4 and CO 2 hydrates from 2 to 210 K

CH 4 hydrates occur naturally and are an abundant potential fuel source with a corresponding risk of potent greenhouse gas release, due to their stability conditions at low temperature and high pressure. Byproduct CO 2 can be exchanged with CH 4 in these natural deposits and can potentially stabilize the hydrates at higher temperatures. CH 4 , CO 2 , and mixed CH 4 -CO 2 hydrates are studied with in situ neutron pair distribution function experiments from 2 to 210 K to investigate the impact of varying the CH 4 -CO 2 guest composition in the gas hydrate structure. These experiments combined with Reverse Monte Carlo analysis allow for the characterization of intermolecular CH 4 and CO 2 interactions with the water molecules which form the hydrate lattice and how they impact the local structure of the lattice itself. Results indicate that when CH 4 and CO 2 co-occupy the hydrate, the host is more strongly distorted than in the pure CH 4 and CO 2 hydrates, but this becomes less defined with increasing temperature. The presence of CO 2 in mixed hydrate increases the stability range and creates a barrier for CH 4 to completely leave the structure.
