Wide Band-Gap Perovskites for Tandem Photovoltaics

This research was aimed at development of a mechanically-stacked, perovskite Multi-Junction Solar Cell in which (1) at least one Junction is made of metal-halide perovskite and (2) the Junctions are manufactured in parallel and then stacked to create the final module. This technology presented significant advanced manufacturing challenges and opportunities in getting to scale, including materials scale-up and the development of novel roll-to-roll processing and encapsulation methods. Research conducted was also applicable to a monolithically-integrated perovskite Multi-Junction Solar Cell, in which the two or more Junctions are integrated and electrically connected. The project explored the following technical opportunities in conjunction with the Cyclotron Road mentored entrepreneurial research experience: Fabrication of inorganic heterojunction layers on both sides of a perovskite semiconductor, and modification of interfaces; developed transparent electrode layers on both sides of a perovskite semiconductor; and developed a prototype and optimized perovskite Junction Solar Cell.

Iodine Speciation Basis and Gap Analysis for Hanford Tank Farm Inventory and during Processing

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is providing baseline technical support to Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) for the One System River Protection Project (RPP) Integrated Flowsheet team. This report documents the evaluation of the technical bases available to support iodine speciation and distribution within Hanford wastes and subsequent waste streams generated during direct feed low-activity waste (DFLAW) pretreatment operations (specifically, waste retrievals and staging, and particle filtration and cesium decontamination using crystalline silicotitanate (CST) ion exchange [in the tank side cesium removal (TSCR) system]. The task performed a literature survey of information related to iodine species in environments analogous to Hanford tank waste and the subsequent waste streams to define a technical basis for the possible iodine speciation in Hanford waste. In doing so it can be determined how likely laboratory studies on iodine speciation in tank waste are to be universally relevant across the Hanford tanks. The task evaluated iodide and iodate as the primary species of interest with a focus on organo-iodine where appropriate.

Modular CO 2 Capture Processes for Integration with Modular Scale Gasification Technologies: Literature Review and Gap Analysis for Future R&D

The motivation for this report is the recent focus of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) gasification program to develop modular scale gasification processes for electricity generation and other applications. Mass-produced, modular gasification systems have been proposed to decrease the upfront capital costs and to encourage flexible deployment of advanced gasification technology using a diverse set of feedstocks. To fully realize the benefits of advanced gasification technology for power generation as well as other chemical applications, precombustion carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) capture must be considered. Therefore, the aim of this report is to assess the potential of integrating modular scale carbon capture processes with modular scale coal gasification technologies, and to help guide future research and development efforts in this area.

Electricity demand in South Asia – data gaps and pathways for research and modeling

South Asia is one of the fastest growing regions - economically and energy-wise in the world. However, there are significant uncertainties in how the energy demand would grow given the rapidly rising incomes, urbanization, industrialization, access to energy, warming climate and technological change. The transition to clean energy in the region is a priority and is critical to limiting emissions in the region and increasing regional energy security. The power sector will play an important role in decarbonization of energy systems, lowering emissions in other sectors through electrification. However, as existing end uses are scaled up more and new end uses are electrified, the temporal and spatial patterns of electricity consumption could change. These changes have implications for the magnitude, shape, and timing of peak demand, which in turn affects the power sector’s investments and operations, and ability to provide reliable power. In this report, we outline key uncertainties in demand growth that South Asian countries would face in the near to medium term, along with summarizing insights from stakeholder consultations we held over the past 6 months.
