Topological approach to electron correlations at fractional quantum Hall effect

Highlights: • Braids in 2D electron systems in magnetic field acquire a cyclotron metrics. • Commensurability of 2D braids with Wigner crystal of electrons leads to FQHE. • Homotopy invariants define the hierarchy of FQHE universal in all 2D Hall systems. • Composite fermions illustrate multiloop braids in the simplest homotopy case. • Correlations in FQHE reveal long-range quantum entanglement of all electrons. The classification of homotopy invariants in interacting multi-electron 2D systems at quantizing magnetic fields is presented, explaining the topologically protected correlations occurring at integer and fractional quantum Hall effects. The long-range quantum entanglement is essential for homotopy correlated phases in contrast to the binary entanglement for conventional phases with local order parameters. The classification of homotopy long-range correlated phases induced by the Coulomb interaction of electrons has been derived in terms of homotopy invariants, which are universal and robust against local disorder and single-particle crystal field, as illustrated by experimental observations in various materials with different microscopic structure, like GaAs 2DES, graphene monolayer and bilayer and in Chern topological insulators. The homotopy phases are demonstrated to be topologically protected and immune to single-particle perturbations, temperature chaos and variation of the electron interaction strength. The nonzero repulsive interaction between electrons is shown, however, to be essential for the definition of the homotopy invariants, which disappear in gaseous systems.

A scalable domain decomposition method for FEM discretizations of nonlocal equations of integrable and fractional type

Nonlocal models allow for the description of phenomena which cannot be captured by classical partial differential equations. The availability of efficient solvers is one of the main concerns for the use of nonlocal models in real world engineering applications. Here, we present a domain decomposition solver that is inspired by substructuring methods for classical local equations. In numerical experiments involving finite element discretizations of scalar and vectorial nonlocal equations of integrable and fractional type, we observe improvements in solution time of up to 14.6x compared to commonly used solver strategies.

Experimental determinations of carbon and hydrogen isotope fractionations and methane clumped isotope compositions associated with ethane pyrolysis from 550 to 600°C

Methane clumped isotope compositions signify the relative natural abundances of rare, doubly substituted isotopic species of methane ( 13 CH 3 D and 12 CH 2 D 2 ) and have emerged as a new isotopic tool to trace the sources, sinks, and lifecycles of methane in the environment. Such measurements can identify equilibration (or reequilibration) temperatures if found to be in isotopic equilibrium or non-equilibrium processes (e.g., kinetically controlled reactions or mixing) if not in isotopic equilibrium. Naturally occurring thermogenic methane—formed by the thermally activated breakdown of larger organic molecules—has been found to have clumped isotope compositions consistent with equilibrium at reasonable gas formation temperatures in some settings and non-equilibrium processes occurring during either formation, migration, storage, or extraction in others. To explore the potential controls on the isotopic composition of thermogenic methane, we conducted isothermal time-series ethane pyrolysis experiments at 550 and 600 °C to measure methane and ethane 13 C/ 12 C and D/H fractionations and methane clumped isotope compositions (resolved 13 CH 3 D and 12 CH 2 D 2 ). We explore the effects of modifying the initial clumped isotope composition of ethane and the addition of water vapor to pyrolysis experiments. We observe that ethane and methane 13 C/ 12 C are controlled by kinetic isotope effects and Rayleigh distillation processes. In contrast, ethane and methane D/H and methane clumped isotope compositions appear to be controlled by a combination of these processes and hydrogen isotope exchange. The hydrogen isotope exchange processes lead to isotopic equilibrium as reaction completion is approached for both D/H (ethane/methane) and methane clumped isotope compositions. Here, we develop a chemical model based on a mass balance approach that accounts for inheritance vs. hydrogen-abstraction formation pathways for singly and doubly substituted isotopologues of ethane and methane that is compared to the experimental data. The model allows the determination of carbon and hydrogen kinetic isotope effects associated with ethane cracking and hydrogen abstraction reactions that, where applicable, we compare to prior theoretical constraints. From the comparison of the model to the experimental data, we infer that the kinetically controlled ethane and methane bulk isotope compositions and methane clumped isotope compositions are controlled by kinetic isotope effects (both primary and secondary) associated with both C–C bond and C–H bond cleavage reactions. Specifically, the methane clumped isotope compositions likely result from a combination of clumped isotope effects associated with ethane breakdown and/or assembly of methane isotopologues (expressed in terms of γ-factor parameters ≠ 1) and combinatorial effects that arise probabilistically. We discuss our experimental results in the context of recent pyrolysis experiments and observations of naturally occurring thermogenic methane. We consider a proposal consistent with observations from nature that the hydrogen isotope exchange reactions that promote equilibration of methane isotopic molecules at or near formation temperature may be facilitated by free radicals generated by pyrolysis reactions. In this framework, isotope exchange effectively ceases when pyrolysis effectively ceases locking in compositions that can be consistent with peak formation temperatures.

Fractionated Low-Dose Radiation Induces Long-Lasting Inflammatory Responses in the Hippocampal Stem Cell Niche

Despite major technical advances in hippocampus-sparing radiation therapy, radiation-induced injury to the neural stem cell compartment may affect neurocognitive functions. In the brain, glial cells modulate neuronal functions and are major mediators of neuroinflammation. In a preclinical mouse model with fractionated low-dose radiation (LDR), the complex response to radiation-induced injury was analyzed in the hippocampal stem cell compartment over a period of 6 months.

Non-planar growth of high Al-mole-fraction AlGaN on patterned GaN platforms for mitigating strain-induced cracks beyond the critical layer thickness

Non-planar growth of Al x Ga 1-x N epitaxial layers with an average alloy composition up to Al-mole-fraction of x ~ 0.21 was performed on patterned c-plane GaN on (0001) sapphire substrates with stripe-shaped mesa structures. This approach successfully realized the growth of crack-free AlGaN layers on the top of mesas with layer thicknesses greater than the expected critical layer thickness by relaxing the in-plane stress on the top of the mesa. The effectiveness of the relaxation strongly depends on the width and depth of the stripe mesa. In conclusion, the relaxation of in-plane stress and resultant suppression of cracks in AlGaN layer are qualitatively discussed.

Fractionation of critical metals from authentic acid mine drainage using a multi-bed immobilized amine sorbent setup: A field site study

Here for the first time reported, a flow-through multi-fixed bed immobilized amine/silica sorbent strategy was employed to fractionate purified critical metals from authentic acid mine drainage (AMD). The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory’s (NETL) patent-pending Multi-functional Sorbent Technology (MUST) sorbents were used to recover critical metals from AMD at the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden (Pittsburgh, PA USA). By adjusting the AMD/sorbent ratio, we recovered > 80% of pure adsorbed Mn (by adsorbed metal weight) and >90% pure adsorbed Al at lab-scale. Further optimizing the weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) enhanced the rate of adsorbed Al recovery by over five times, justifying a field site test. After treating >100 L of AMD at the field site, the optimized polyamine/epoxysilane/aminosilane sorbent recovered approximately 0.7 wt% adsorbed Al at > 90% purity. A tangible amount of purified aluminum hydroxide [Al(OH) 3 ] and aluminum sulfate [Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ] solids were then recovered after eluting and precipitating the previously adsorbed metals.

Machine learning prediction on the fractional free volume of polymer membranes

Fractional free volume (FFV) characterizes the microstructural level features of polymers and affects their properties including thermal, mechanical, and separation performance. Experimental measurements and theoretical analyses have been used to quantify the FFV of polymers, but challenges remain because of their limitations. Experimental measurements are laborious and based on semi empirical equations, while Bondi’s group contribution theory involves ambiguities like the determination of van der Waals volume and the choice of factor values in the theoretical equation. To efficiently evaluate the FFV of polymers, this study utilizes high-throughput molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to build a large dataset regarding polymer’s FFV. Based on this large dataset, we further build machine learning (ML) models to establish the composition-structure relation. Inspired by group contribution theory which correlates polymer’s functional groups to FFV, our ML models correlate polymer’s substructures or physico-chemical indexes to FFV. Here, our study first benchmarks the MD simulation protocol to obtain reliable FFV of polymers and then carries out high-throughput MD simulations for more than 6,500 homopolymers and 1,400 polyamides. Such a large and diverse dataset makes the well-trained ML models more generalizable, compared with the group contribution theory. The efficiency of a feed forward neural network model is further demonstrated by applying it to a hypothetical polyimide dataset of more than 8 million chemical structures. The predicted FFVs of hypothetical polyimides are further validated by MD simulations. The obtained FFVs of the 8 million polymers, plus their previously reported gas separation performances, demonstrate the promising capability of ML virtual screening for the discovery of polymer membranes with exceptional permeability/selectivity.

Simulation of energy loss of fractionally charged particles using Geant4

Over the years several rare-event search experiments have shown increasing interest to search for Fractionally Charged Particles (FCPs) within the data acquired in those experiments. This, in turn, has required the need for a framework to calculate accurately the energy loss expected from FCPs as they pass through the detector material. We have developed Monte Carlo methods within Geant4 to simulate for the first time energy loss of FCPs through different physics processes. The program can be used to calculate energy deposition distributions, a major component of any FCP search analysis, as they interact with detector material. We discuss the implementation and validation of the energy loss of FCPs using a typical detector material.
