AGGREGATE: dAta-driven modelinG preservinG contRollable dEr for outaGe mAnagemenT and rEsiliency (Report for Task 11 & 12: Components and Capabilities of the Resiliency Driven Outage Management and Feeder Restoration System (Deliverable D8))

This report provides progress update for the development of a outage management, feeder restoration, and restoration action feasibility check modules as part of the AGGREGATE project. Details for integration with controllability module, data driven situational awareness of network and distributed energy resources as well cyber security plan for these modules integrated with GE ADMS are also presented in the report. These three modules for outage management, feeder restoration, and restoration action feasibility check modules are developed in MATLAB and validated with a modified IEEE 123-node feeder. Results demonstrate ability of these new modules to improve the restoration process post-disaster to enhance the system resilience.

AGGREGATE: dAta-driven modelinG preservinG contRollable dEr for outaGe mAnagemenT and rEsiliency (Report for Task 14: Model Verification/Validation Test Plan (Deliverable D10))

This report summarizes the technical progress and validation plan for each of AGGREGATE project modules, and integrated modules. The overall validation plan can be divided into two major parts. Firstly, it provides offline validation results of each module using the IEEE-123 node distribution system with certain modifications to support individual module results verification. The offline validation plan tentatively validated the usability and practicability of developed AGGREGATE tools. Secondly, the realworld test system - Seattle City Light (SCL) test feeder for verifying each module and the integrated modules using GE advanced distribution management system (ADMS) software.

Report for Task 15: Developed Tool Verification/Validation Report (Deliverable D11): AGGREGATE: dAta-driven modelinG preservinG contRollable dEr for outaGe mAnagemenT and rEsiliency

This report summarizes the verification report for the developed modules. The team conducted verification in two phases. In phase 1, the modules were validated using offline validation methods and in phase 2 the modules were subjected to real-time validation. This report outlines the approach and the results for the modules under offline and real-time settings. The rest of the report details the functional workflow of AGGREGATE modules, we then transition to offline validation followed by real-time validation of modules. We conclude the report by discussing some of the key points of this report.

Interplay of Magnetism and Superconductivity in van der Waals Heterostructures (Final report)

This project has investigated the magnetic and electric properties of 2D materials, with emphasis on the (anti-)ferromagnetic properties of 2D crystalline magnets and a new concept for stacking engineering of 2D ferroelectricity. The new basic physics fundamental knowledge obtained through this research may have important implications for future technologies based on magnetism and ferroelectricity, for example spintronics, quantum information science, or neuromorphic computing.

Peer-to-peer Communication Control Architecture for Engaging Ubiquitous DERs to Support Distribution System Resiliency

In this project, we developed a leader-follower consensus (LFC) control architecture to coordinate between GFM and GFL inverters with the former being leaders and the latter being followers. The objective is to simultaneously achieve a fast frequency and voltage regulation along with accurate real power and var sharing among all inverters under various disturbances. The distinction of our work is that we consider both GFM and GFL inveters for frequency and voltage regulations. In addition, rather than a standard consensus algorithm, our work utilized a leader-follower consensus algorithm which exploits the physical characteristics of GFM-GFL inverters: (i) the GFM inverters directly control frequency and voltage, and hence, serve as leaders, (ii) the GFL inverters measure frequency/voltage to modulate their outputs, and hence, they should serve as followers. The effectiveness of the proposed LFC coordination was tested on a networked microgrid test system under different disturbances and communication degradation events. We demonstrated that the proposed fully coordinated control is robust to disturbances, while outperforming uncoordinated and GFM-only coordinated approaches. Overall, this work emphasized the necessity and benefits of the GFMGFL coordination in the secondary control of microgrids.

Risk-informed Hierarchical Control of Behind-the-Meter DERs with AMI Data Integration (Final Technical Report)

This project addresses several key barriers to implement the next generation demand response applications and provides a clear understanding of implementing hierarchical and standalone control using AMI data. Through this program, Eaton has developed and tested a meter-as-a-controller prototype with the help of other partners--- National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), Pecan St Inc. (PSI), and Delaware Electric Cooperative (DEC). The controller can utilize residential controllable loads such as heating, ventilation, and air conditioner (HVAC), electric water heater and distributed energy resources like solar PV and battery energy storage systems for off-setting the demand that is required from the grid, thus providing reliable grid-services for demand reduction or peak shaving. The controller is also capable of coordinating the resources of the premises for better management and energy efficiency while meeting the comfort bound of the premises owner as quality-of-service. The development has been demonstrated in a three virtual-home setup at system performance lab of NREL with real appliances (HVAC, electric water heater, solar PV, and battery). The technology has also been proved through laboratory and field demonstration with successful interconnectivity (e.g., end-to-end communication and data exchange) between the residential appliances and utility through the RF network at Delaware Electric Co-op (DEC) in Delaware.
