Wound-Field Synchronous Machine-System Integration toward 8X Power Density and Commercialization
In support of VTO's Electric Drive R&D activity, the Electric Drive Technologies (EDT) Consortium, a multi-disciplinary team of national labs and universities, coordinates and conducts a portfolio of research to advance the state-of-the-art in electric drive technologies. The Consortium established the following strategic goal listed below: (EDT Research Consortium Strategic Goal (compared to 2015 baseline)) A 125K electric traction drive system: (1) 8X power density improvement, or 1/10 the volume (33 kW/L), (2) 1/2 the cost ($\$$3.3/kW), (3) 2X useful life (300,000 miles), and (4) 100 kW/L inverter and a <20,000 rpm, 50kW/L electric motor The objective of this project is to design a Wound Field Synchronous Machine with 8X power density improvement and cost below $\$$3.3/kW.

Evaluation of a CFD Commercial Package to the Modeling of Acoustic Wave Propagation in Bubbly-Liquid Column
This document reports on the considerations and development of an initial computational model based on the first principles for predicting acoustic propagation in a wellbore based on a logging-while-drilling (LWD) tool. This tool could be used to create a large database of simulated signals mimicking gas-influx-while-drilling events (so-called “kicks”). While other logging techniques, such as electrical resistivity and bulk density, are available in LWD tools, the acoustic logging method was identified in a complementary experimental endeavor as the most appropriate for early kick detection due to its high sensitivity to the presence of gas in liquids.
End-Use Savings Shapes - Public Data Set Release: Commercial 2023 Release 2 [Slides]
This presentation, part of an NREL-hosted webinar in October 2023, discusses end-use savings shapes and public datasets.
Performance Benchmark of Commercial and Developmental Fission Chambers in Elevated Temperatures
This report documents the testing of two in-core fission chamber technologies for high-temperature irradiation environments. This work is in collaboration with the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA). The fission chamber evaluated by Idaho National Laboratory is the micro-pocket fission detector (MPFD). The fission chamber evaluated by the CEA are the 3 mm miniaturized fission chamber and the 7 mm high-temperature fission chamber. Demonstrations of the MPFD were performed at the Neutron Radiography Facility and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Reactor. Demonstrations of the CEA fission chambers were performed at the Ohio State University Research Reactor. All demonstrations were conducted with a heated experiment rig up to 850°C.
Quantification of Commercially Planned Battery Component Supply in North America through 2035
There is the potential for rapid growth in battery manufacturing in North America in the coming years, as indicated by investment plans which companies have announced. Argonne National Laboratory is tracking these investment announcements to understand the availability of domestically produced battery cells and battery components over the next decade. We find that companies have made announcements for over 1,300 GWh/year of lithium-ion battery cell production by 2030, enough to conservatively supply ten million electric vehicles and expected growth in stationary grid storage. From 2021 to 2032, battery cell production is modeled to grow 28-fold. For each of the core battery components of lithium-ion batteries (cathodes, anodes, separators, electrolytes, and foils), we describe the current announced capacities for materials with respect to cell production and end-use demand, finding similar rapid growth for each.
