Interpretation of glory undulations in scattering cross sections Amplitudes

Information on the interaction potential contained in the undulations in the energy dependence of the total scattering cross section is deduced by measuring the undulation amplitude. The amplitude is interpreted with emphasis on features that are independent of any specific assumptions about the form of the interaction potential. It is shown that the previously measured spacings of the undulations describe the area of the potential well, whereas the amplitudes provide a measure of the force in the vicinity of the distance of closest approach. This information can be used to test proposed potential models and to suggest ways of improving inadequate models; if the predicted spacing is too large, then the area of the well of the model is too small, and if the predicted amplitude is too small, then the repulsive wall of the potential is too steep.

Photodetachment cross sections of negative ions - The range of validity of the Wigner threshold law

The threshold behavior of the photodetachment cross section of negative ions as a function of photon frequency is usually described by the Wigner law. This paper reports the results of a model calculation using the zero-core-contribution (ZCC) approximation. Theoretical expressions for the leading correction to the Wigner law are developed, giving the range of validity of the Wigner law and the expected accuracy. The results are relevant to extraction of electron affinities from experimental photodetachment data.

The relationship between wind vector and normalized radar cross section used to derive Seasat-A Satellite Scatterometer winds

The Seasat-A Satellite Scatterometer (SASS) ocean normalized radar cross section (NRCS) dependence on the 19.5-m neutral stability wind vector may be specified as a function of radar incidence angle, the angle between wind direction and radar azimuth, and the neutral stability wind speed expressed in m/sec at a height of 19.5 m. An account is given of the development of models both expressing this relationship and providing the basis of inversion of NRCS to SASS winds, from initially aircraft scatterometer measurement-based forms to three Seasat field-validation experiments which furnish model NRCS versus surface windspeed data for comparison with SASS data.

Kuang's Semi-Classical Formalism for Electron Capture Cross-Sections in Ion-Ion Collisions at few MeV's/nucleon: Application to ENA Modeling

Accurate estimates of electron-capture cross sections at energies relevant to energetic neutral atom (ENA) modeling (approx few MeV per nucleon) and for multi-electron ions must rely on first-principles approaches and/or detailed quantum-mechanical simulation of the collision process. Kuang's semi-classical approach offers a middle-ground, elegant and efficient way to arrive at these estimates. We shall present a sample application and current progress in applying and extending Kuang's formalism to ENA modeling.

Ionization cross-sections for the production of positive ions from H2O by electron impact

Water is present in the atmospheres of 6 of the 9 planets. Cross section values for the direct and partial ionization of H2O by electron impact have been measured and compared with previously published data. The present measurements have been carried out from thresholds to 1 KeV by utilizing a crossed electron beam and molecular beam collision geometry and an improved ion extraction technique.
