Correlation of combustor acoustic power levels inferred from internal fluctuating pressure measurements

Combustion chamber acoustic power levels inferred from internal fluctuating pressure measurements are correlated with operating conditions and chamber geometries over a wide range. The variables include considerations of chamber design (can, annular, and reverse-flow annular) and size, number of fuel nozzles, burner staging and fuel split, airflow and heat release rates, and chamber inlet pressure and temperature levels. The correlated data include those obtained with combustion component development rigs as well as engines.

Recent developments and applications with gas cell correlation spectrometer

Gaspec, a gas filter correlation spectrometer, is described. Gaspec is a dual-gas three-channel instrument using two detectors which receive amplitude-shared source signals modulated at the frequency of the chopper. Several units for operation around the 3-5 micron and the 8-15 micron region have been constructed, and gases such as CO2, CO, CH4, HCl, NO, and hydrazines can be detected. Advantages of Gaspec are considered with reference to improvements developed for the basic Cospec (gas cell correlation spectrometer) instrument.

Correlations of thermodynamic effects for developed cavitation

The net positive suction head (NPSH) requirements for a pump are determined by the combined effects of cavitation, fluid properties, pump geometry, and pump operating point. An important part of this determination is the temperature depression (Delta T). Correlations are presented of the temperature depression for various degrees of developed cavitation on venturis and ogives. These correlations, based on a semi-empirical entrainment theory, express Delta T in terms of the dimensionless numbers of Nusselt, Reynolds, Froude, Weber, and Peclet, and dimensionless cavity length (L/D). The Delta T data were obtained in Freon 114, hydrogen and nitrogen for the venturis and in Freon 113 and water for the ogives.

Chromospheric scaling laws, width-luminosity correlations, and the Wilson-Bappu effect

Simple scaling laws for the thickness and mean electron density of stellar chromospheres as functions of surface gravity and chromospheric heating are proposed. These scaling laws are shown to be a consequence of hydrostatic equilibrium, the influence of gas ionization on plasma cooling functions, and the assumption that chromospheric heating is relatively constant with height. It is argued that line width-luminosity correlations similar to those observed in the Ca II K and Mg II k resonance lines are implied by the chromospheric scaling laws if the outer edges of the K and k emission cores are formed in the Lorentzian wings of the absorption profile. The results are compared with the Wilson-Bappu effect, empirical width-luminosity correlations for Ca II K1 minimum features, and solar-plage profiles of the Ca II K and Mg II k resonance lines.

A correlation

The paper reports on some correlative features of two sets of space-based atmospheric measurements which are globally distributed with good statistical coverage. One set of data, pertaining to tropospheric processes, is lightning occurrence frequency derived from measurements aboard the DMSP satellite. The second set of data, pertaining to thermospheric processes, is the occurrence frequency of wavelike structures in neutral atmospheric density profiles derived from measurements aboard AE-C and AE-D. A significant correlation was found between the occurrence patterns of dawn lightning, which is indicative of massive long-lived tropospheric convective activity, and the occurrence patterns of wavelike structures in the thermosphere.

Experimental measurements of the rotating frequencies and mode shapes of a full scale helicopter rotor in a vacuum and correlations with calculated results

This paper presents results of an experimental program conducted to obtain data which can be used for correlations of rotor blade dynamic analyses. Measurements were made of the rotating frequencies and mode shapes of a representative full-scale, two-bladed helicopter rotor in a vacuum. The blades were cantilevered to the hub. Mode shape data were obtained optically using a system of cameras developed specifically for this purpose. Excitation of the rotor was provided by vertical oscillatory motion of the hub. To compare experimental and analytical results, correlations of some experimental measurements with calculations from an existing blade modes computer program based on a Holzer-Myklestad procedure are presented, and the differences between the results are discussed. The experimental and analytical natural frequencies were generally in good agreement as were the principal components of the modal deflections for the flap and lag modes. The torsion mode shape indicated disagreement between the measured and calculated results in regard to the amount of flap and lag motions present in this mode, while the spanwise variations of the measured and calculated torsional components were in agreement.

Progress report on the Block 1 VLBI correlator implementation

The Block 1 VLBI Processor Subsystem (VPS) of the Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) System for the determination of station clock-sync parameters, UT1 and polar motion, and station platform parameters and for use in spacecraft tracking is discussed. The Block 1 VPS performs three basic functions: it receives the 500 kbit/sec video data over the GCF wideband data lines from each of the three DSN 64 m antennas; it cross correlates data; and it performs several postcorrelation data reduction operations on the correlated data including calibration, editing, and parameter estimation.

A correlation method to predict the surface pressure distribution of an infinite plate or a body of revolution from which a jet is issuing

A correlation method to predict pressures induced on an infinite plate by a jet exhausting normal to the plate into a subsonic free stream was extended to jets exhausting at angles to the plate and to jets exhausting normal to the surface of a body revolution. The complete method consisted of an analytical method which models the blockage and entrainment properties of the jet and an empirical correlation which accounts for viscous effects. For the flat plate case, the method was applicable to jet velocity ratios up to ten, jet inclination angles up to 45 deg from the normal, and radial distances up to five diameters from the jet. For the body of revolution case, the method was applicable to a body at zero degrees angle of attack, jet velocity ratios 1.96 and 3.43, circumferential angles around the body up to 25 deg from the jet, axial distances up to seven diameters from the jet, and jet-to-body diameter ratios less than 0.1.

The correlation and quantification of airborne spectroradiometer data to turbidity measurements at Lake Powell, Utah

A water sampling program was accomplished at Lake Powell, Utah, during June 1975 for correlation to multispectral data obtained with a 500-channel airborne spectroradiometer. Field measurements were taken of percentage of light transmittance, surface temperature, pH and Secchi disk depth. Percentage of light transmittance was also measured in the laboratory for the water samples. Analyses of electron micrographs and suspended sediment concentration data for four water samples located at Hite Bridge, Mile 168, Mile 150 and Bullfrog Bay indicated differences in the composition and concentration of the particulate matter. Airborne spectroradiometer multispectral data were analyzed for the four sampling locations. The results showed that: (1) as the percentage of light transmittance of the water samples decreased, the reflected radiance increased; and (2) as the suspended sediment concentration (mg/l) increased, the reflected radiance increased in the 1-80 mg/l range. In conclusion, valuable qualitative information was obtained on surface turbidity for the Lake Powell water spectra. Also, the reflected radiance measured at a wavelength of 0.58 micron was directly correlated to the suspended sediment concentration.

A fan pressure ratio correlation in terms of Mach number and Reynolds number for the Langley 0.3 meter transonic cryogenic tunnel

Calibration data for the two dimensional test section of the Langley 0.3 Meter Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel were used to develop a Mach number-Reynolds number correlation for the fan pressure ratio in terms of test section conditions. Well established engineering relationships combined to form an equation which is functionally analogous to the correlation. A geometric loss coefficient which is independent of Reynolds number or Mach number was determined. Present and anticipated uses of this concept include improvement of tunnel control schemes, comparison of efficiencies for operationally similar wind tunnels, prediction of tunnel test conditions and associated energy usage, and determination of Reynolds number scaling laws for similar fluid flow systems.

Jet array impingement with crossflow-correlation of streamwise resolved flow and heat transfer distributions

Correlations for heat transfer coefficients for jets of circular offices and impinging on a surface parallel to the jet orifice plate are presented. The air, following impingement, is constrained to exit in a single direction along the channel formed by the jet orifice plate and the heat transfer (impingement) surface. The downstream jets are subjected to a crossflow originating from the upstream jets. Impingement surface heat transfer coefficients resolved to one streamwise jet orifice spacing, averaged across the channel span, are correlated with the associated individual spanwise orifice row jet and crossflow velocities, and with the geometric parameters.

Rapid correlation analysis in a group of motions and homogeneous scale transforms of the plane (M(2)xR sub +)

A method is proposed for picking out a given image, in a plane, irrespective of translations, rotations, and homogeneous scale transforms of the plane. The correlation integral is calculated, using the method of abstract harmonic analysis. In this case, and also for groups of translations, it is possible to carry out the calculations using the rapid Fourier transform. The latter fact makes it possible to substantially reduce the number of computer operations for calculating the correlation integral, as compared with direct methods.

In situ correlative measurements for the ultraviolet differential absorption lidar and the high spectral resolution lidar air quality remote sensors: 1980 PEPE/NEROS program

In situ correlative measurements were obtained with a NASA aircraft in support of two NASA airborne remote sensors participating in the Environmental Protection Agency's 1980persistent elevated pollution episode (PEPE) and Northeast regional oxidant study (NEROS) field program in order to provide data for evaluating the capability of two remote sensors for measuring mixing layer height, and ozone and aerosol concentrations in the troposphere during the 1980 PEPE/NEROS program. The in situ aircraft was instrumented to measure temperature, dewpoint temperature, ozone concentrations, and light scattering coefficient. In situ measurements for ten correlative missions are given and discussed. Each data set is presented in graphical and tabular format aircraft flight plans are included.

CCD correlated quadruple sampling processor

A correlated quadruple sampling processor for improved signal-to-noise ratio in the output of a charge-coupled device (CCD) is comprised of: switching means for momentarily clamping a CCD signal line at a first reference level A before a CCD data pulse and then obtaining a first data sample B with respect to the reference A during a CCD data pulse, and storing the positive sample B-A; switching means for momentarily clamping the CCD signal line a second time at the level C during the presence of the CCD data pulse and then obtaining a second data sample D with respect to the reference level C after the CCD data pulse, and storing the negative sample D-C; and means for obtaining the difference between the stored samples +(B-A) and -(D-C), thus increasing the net signal amplitude by a factor of about 2 while the noise would be increased by only a factor of square root of 2 since there will be no correlation in the noise between the double samples +(B-A) and -(D-C) effectively added.
