ATLAS flavour-tagging algorithms for the LHC Run 2 $pp$ collision dataset

The flavour-tagging algorithms developed by the ATLAS Collaboration and used to analyse its dataset of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV $pp$ collisions from Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider are presented. These new tagging algorithms are based on recurrent and deep neural networks, and their performance is evaluated in simulated collision events. These developments yield considerable improvements over previous jet-flavour identification strategies. At the 77% $b$-jet identification efficiency operating point, light-jet (charm-jet) rejection factors of 170 (5) are achieved in a sample of simulated Standard Model $t\bar{t}$ events; similarly, at a $c$-jet identification efficiency of 30%, a light-jet ($b$-jet) rejection factor of 70 (9) is obtained.

Search for light long-lived neutral particles from Higgs boson decays via vector-boson-fusion production from pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search is reported for long-lived dark photons with masses between 0.1 GeV and 15 GeV, from exotic decays of Higgs bosons produced via vector-boson-fusion. Events that contain displaced collimated Standard Model fermions reconstructed in the calorimeter or muon spectrometer are probed. This search uses the full LHC Run 2 (2015–2018) data sample collected in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb –1 . Dominant backgrounds from Standard Model processes and non-collision sources are estimated using data-driven techniques. The observed event yields in the signal regions are consistent with the expected background. Upper limits on the Higgs boson to dark photon branching fraction are reported as a function of the dark photon mean proper decay length or of the dark photon mass and the coupling between the Standard Model and the potential dark sector. This search is combined with previous ATLAS searches obtained in the gluon–gluon fusion and WH production modes. A branching fraction above 10% is excluded at 95% CL for a 125 GeV Higgs boson decaying into two dark photons for dark photon mean proper decay lengths between 173 and 1296 mm and mass of 10 GeV.

Multiplicity dependence of charged-particle intra-jet properties in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The first measurement of the multiplicity dependence of intra-jet properties of leading charged-particle jets in proton–proton (pp) collisions is reported. The mean charged particle multiplicity and jet fragmentation distributions are measured in minimum-bias and high-multiplicity pp collisions at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV using the ALICE detector. Jets are reconstructed from charged particles produced in the midrapidity region (|η| < 0.9) using the sequential recombination anti-k T algorithm with jet resolution parameters R = 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 for the trans verse momentum (p T ) interval 5–110 GeV/c. The high multiplicity events are selected by the forward V0 scintilla tor detectors. The mean charged-particle multiplicity inside the leading jet cone rises monotonically with increasing jet p T in qualitative agreement with previous measurements at lower energies. The distributions of jet fragmentation function variables z ch and ξ ch are measured for different jet-p T intervals. Jet-p T independent fragmentation of leading jets is observed for wider jets except at high- and low-z ch values. The observed “hump-backed plateau” structure in the ξ ch distribution indicates suppression of low-p T particles. In high-multiplicity events, an enhancement of the fragmen tation probability of low-z ch particles accompanied by a suppression of high-zch particles is observed compared to minimum-bias events. This behavior becomes more promi nent for low-p T jets with larger jet radius. The results are compared with predictions of QCD-inspired event generators, PYTHIA 8 with Monash 2013 tune and EPOS LHC. It is found that PYTHIA 8 qualitatively reproduces the jet modification in high-multiplicity events except at high jet p T . These measurements provide important constraints to models of jet fragmentation.

Investigating late-stage particle production in pp collisions with balance functions

Balance functions have been regarded in the past as a method of investigating the late-stage hadronization found in the presence of a strongly-coupled medium. They are also used to constrain mechanisms of particle production in large and small collision systems. Charge balance functions for inclusive and identified particle pairs are reported as a function of charged particle multiplicity in proton–proton collisions simulated with the PYTHIA8 and the EPOS4 models. The charge balance functions of inclusive, pion, kaon, and proton pairs exhibit amplitudes and shapes that depend on particle species and differ significantly in the two models due to the different particle production mechanisms implemented in PYTHIA and EPOS. The shapes and amplitudes also evolve with multiplicity in both models. In addition, the evolution of the longitudinal rms width and that of balance functions integrals with multiplicity (and average transverse momentum) feature significant differences in the two models.

Measurements of Higgs boson production via gluon–gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion using $H\rightarrow WW^*\rightarrow \ell \nu \ell \nu$ decays in pp collisions with the ATLAS detector and their effective field theory interpretations

Higgs boson production cross-sections via gluon–gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion in proton–proton collisions are measured in the $H\rightarrow WW^*\rightarrow \ell \nu \ell \nu$ decay channel. The Large Hadron Collider delivered proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV between 2015 and 2018, which were recorded by the ATLAS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $140\,\text {fb}^{-1}.$ The total cross-sections for Higgs boson production by gluon–gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion times the $H\rightarrow WW^*$ branching ratio are measured to be $12.4^{+1.3}_{-1.2}\,\text {pb}$ and $0.79^{+0.18}_{-0.16}\,\text {pb},$ respectively, in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. Higgs boson production is further characterised through measurements of Simplified Template Cross-Sections in a total of fifteen kinematic fiducial regions. A new scheme of kinematic fiducial regions has been introduced to enhance the sensitivity to CP-violating effects in Higgs boson interactions. Both schemes are used to constrain CP-even and CP-odd dimension-six operators in the Standard Model effective field theory.

Multiplicity dependence of f 0 (980) production in pp collisions at $\mathbf{\sqrt{s}}$ = 13 TeV

The dependence of f 0 (980) production on the final-state charged-particle multiplicity is reported for proton–proton (pp) collisions at the centre-of-mass energy, $\mathbf{\sqrt{s}}$ = 13 TeV. The production of (980) is measured with the ALICE detector via the decay channel in a midrapidity region of |y| < 0.5. The evolution of the integrated yields and mean transverse momentum of f 0 (980) as a function of charged-particle multiplicity measured in pp at $\mathbf{\sqrt{s}}$ = 13 TeV follows the trends observed in pp at $\mathbf{\sqrt{s}}$ = 5.02 TeV and in proton–lead (p–Pb) collisions at$\mathbf{\sqrt{s_{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV. Particle yield ratios of f 0 (980) to π ± and K* (892) are found to decrease with increasing charged-particle multiplicity. These particle ratios are compared with calculations from the canonical statistical thermal model as a function of charged-particle multiplicity. The thermal model calculations provide a better description of the decreasing trend of particle ratios when no strange or antistrange quark composition for f 0 (980) is assumed, which suggests that the data do not support significant hidden strangeness in the f 0 (980).

Toward learning Lattice Boltzmann collision operators

In this work, we explore the possibility of learning from data collision operators for the Lattice Boltzmann Method using a deep learning approach. We compare a hierarchy of designs of the neural network (NN) collision operator and evaluate the performance of the resulting LBM method in reproducing time dynamics of several canonical flows. In the current study, as a first attempt to address the learning problem, the data were generated by a single relaxation time BGK operator. We demonstrate that vanilla NN architecture has very limited accuracy. On the other hand, by embedding physical properties, such as conservation laws and symmetries, it is possible to dramatically increase the accuracy by several orders of magnitude and correctly reproduce the short and long time dynamics of standard fluid flows.

MEASUREMENTS OF BEAM-BEAM INTERACTIONS IN GEAR-CHANGING COLLISIONS IN DESIREE

In this work, we perform measurements on the interactions of colliding beams in a gear-changing system. Gear-changing was first demonstrated in DESIREE in May of 2020 and showed several promising avenues to measure beam-beam effects. DESIREE has a unique collision scheme where the beams are moving in the same direction, which provides for unique interactions. This experiment used a 4 on 3 gear changing system with one bucket in each ring left empty, this allows us to see the bunch profile while undergoing collisions. We then measured the bunch length over time and used a Fourier transform to extract longitudinal evolution data and compared it to baseline data of uncollided beams.

2020 State of the Science Report, Chapter 3: Collision Risk for Animals around Turbines

The potential for marine animals to encounter and collide with turbines, especially tidal and river turbines, along with the biological, ecological, and regulatory consequences of any such interactions, remain active areas of research and topics of global interest. Uncertainty and knowledge gaps associated with collision risk continue to present challenges within consenting/permitting (hereafter consenting) processes for turbine developments. Consequently, collision risk continues to be the focus of significant research effort, which in recent years has included environmental monitoring of operational devices and arrays. This chapter addresses the overall progress and growth in knowledge across this topic area, and specific progress related to marine mammals, fish, and seabirds. https://tethys.pnnl.gov/publications/state-of-the-science-2020-chapter-3-collision

Search for resonance in inclusive and b-tagged dijet mass spectra in proton-proton collision at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV and constraints on dark matter and other models

Two analyses searching for new heavy resonances and interpreting the result with dark matter are presented in this dissertation. The first analysis searches for resonances decaying into dijet final states using the proton-proton collision data at center mass of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the CMS detector at Large Hadron Collider in2016, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 36 fb -1 . No significant evidence for the production of new particles is observed. A simplified model of interactions between quarks and dark matter is used to interpret the result. The second analysis searches for resonances decaying into dijet final states using the proton-proton collision data at center mass of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the CMS detector at Large Hadron Collider in 2016, 2017, and 2018, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 137.5 fb -1 . A b-tagger named DeepJet is used to examine the events with jets containing B hadrons. No evidence of new heavy resonances is observed, as well. The 95% confidence level cross-section upper limit is set on excited b-quark b* and Coloron models. Limits are also set on a simplified model of interactions between b-quarks and dark matter.

First observation of the production of three massive vector bosons and search for long-lived particles using delayed photons in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13\text{ TeV}$

This thesis presents the first observation of the production of three massive vector bosons (VVV with V = W, Z) in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at $\sqrt{s}=13\text{ TeV}$. The search was performed in final states with two same-sign charged leptons (electrons or muons) plus one or two jets, and three, four, five, or six leptons from WWW, WWZ, WZZ and ZZZ decays, with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb -1 collected by the CMS experiment during 2016-2018. The observed (expected) significance of the combined VVV production is 5.7 (5.9) standard deviations, and the production cross section is measured to be 1010$^{+210}_{-200}$(stat) $^{+150}_{-120}$(syst) fb, corresponding to a signal strength of 1.02$^{+0.26}_{-0.23}$. We also found evidence for WWW and for WWZ production, with observed significances of 3.3 and 3.4 standard deviations, respectively. The measured production cross sections for individual VVV processes are also reported. The establishment of VVV production opens a new program of many standard model studies (such as gauge-gauge and Higgs-gauge couplings), and provides a new tool for many new physics searches (such as anomalous gauge coupling searches, new resonance searches). This thesis also reports a search for long-lived supersymmetry particles decaying to photons in proton-proton collisions at the LHC at $\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV$, with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 77.4 fb -1 collected by CMS during 2016-2017. Results are interpreted with a gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking model, where the long-lived particle is a neutralino and the lightest supersymmetry particle is a gravitino. For neutralino proper decay lengths of 0.1, 1, 10, and 100 m, masses up to 320, 525, 360, and 215 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, respectively. This result extends the limits from previous searches by one order of magnitude for the neutralino proper decay length and up to 100 GeV more for the neutralino mass. Motivated by the need for precision timing measurements for long-lived particle searches, as well as for improvements in general object reconstruction performance, the timing performance of two types of sensors are studied in this thesis: one with a Cerium doped Lutetium Yttrium Orthosilicate (LYSO:Ce) crystal as the scintillator and a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) as the photodetector, another with a Cadmium-Telluride sensor as the active material for a sampling calorimeter. Both setups have been demonstrated with test beams to be able to provide timing measurements of particles with a resolution below 30 ps.

Modification of Χ c1 (3872) and ψ(2S) Production in p Pb Collisions at $\sqrt{S_{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV

The LHCb Collaboration measures production of the exotic hadron Χ c1 (3872) in proton-nucleus collisions for the first time. Comparison with the charmonium state ψ(2S) suggests that the exotic Χ c1 (3872) experiences different dynamics in the nuclear medium than conventional hadrons, and comparison with data from proton-proton collisions indicates that the presence of the nucleus may modify Χ c1 (3872) production rates. This is the first measurement of the nuclear modification factor of an exotic hadron.

Multiplicity dependence of $D$ and $J/\psi$ production in small collision systems

We discuss open heavy flavor (D-meson) and quarkonium (J/ψ) production in high multiplicity proton-proton (p+p) and proton-nucleus (p+A) collisions at the LHC in the impact parameter dependent saturation model. A key ingredient in our calculations is the fluctuations of the gluon saturation scale at large-x at each impact parameter, reflecting rare parton configurations inside the projectile and target. Such initial state fluctuations have been used to describe the multiplicity distribution of D-meson and J/ψ production yield at mid rapidity in small collision systems at the LHC. In these proceedings, we examine the rapidity dependence of J/ψ production and emphasize its importance in constraining initial state models of high multiplicity events in small systems.

Self-Similarity, Fractality and Entropy Principle in Collisions of Hadrons and Nuclei at Tevatron, RHIC and LHC

$z$-Scaling of inclusive spectra as a manifestation of self-similarity and fractality of hadron interactions is illustrated. The scaling for negative particle production in $Au+Au$ collisionsfrom BES-I program at RHIC is demonstrated. The scaling variable $z$ depends on the momentum fractions of the colliding objects carried by the interacting constituents, and momentum fractions of the produced objects in the scattered and recoil directions, which carries the inclusive particle and its counterpart, respectively. Structures of the colliding objects and fragmentation processes in final stateare expressed by fractal dimensions. Medium produced in the collisions is described by a specific heat. The scaling function $\psi(z)$ reveals energy, angular, multiplicity, and flavor independence. It has a power behavior at high $z$ (high $p_T$). Based on entropy principle and $z$-scaling, energy loss as a function of the collision energy, centrality and transverse momentum of inclusive particle is estimated.New conservation law including fractal dimensions is found. Quantization of fractal dimensions is discussed.

Measurements of jet yield and acoplanarity using semi-inclusive $\gamma_{\text{dir}}$+jet and $\pi^{0}$+jet distributions in $p$+$p$ and central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV by STAR

The STAR collaboration presents measurements of semi-inclusive distributions of charged jets recoiling from high transverse energy (E T ) direct photon and π 0 triggers in p+p and central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV. Jets are reconstructed from charged particles using the anti-k T algorithm with jet resolution parameters R = 0.2 and 0.5. The large uncorrelated background in central Au+Au collisions is corrected using a mixed-event technique. This enables a jet measurement extending to low transverse momentum and large R with well-controlled systematic uncertainties. We present measurements of the jet R dependence of suppression, intra-jet broadening, and acoplanarity of π 0 +jet and γ dir +jet for trigger E T between 9–20 GeV.

Collective Excitation in High-Energy Nuclear Collisions—In Memory of Professor Lianshou Liu

We celebrate the legacies of our friend and mentor Professor Lianshou Liu who was one of the pioneers for the phenomenology of multi-particle interactions and initiated the physics of relativistic heavy-ion collisions in China. In this article, we discuss some of the recent exciting experimental observations on the collective phenomena including collectivity, chirality, criticality, strangeness production, and thermal equilibrium in high-energy nuclear collisions. Future directions, especially the physics at high baryon density, will be discussed with a focus on the first-order phase boundary and hyperon–nucleon interactions.

A Review of Intense Electromagnetic Fields in Heavy-Ion Collisions: Theoretical Predictions and Experimental Results

In heavy-ion collisions at relativistic energies, the incident nuclei travel at nearly the speed of light. These collisions deposit kinetic energy into the overlap region and create a high-temperature environment where hadrons “melt” into deconfined quarks and gluons. The spectator nucleons, which do not undergo scatterings, generate an ultraintense electromagnetic field—on the order of 10 18 G at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and 10 19 G at the Large Hadron Collider. These powerful electromagnetic fields have a substantial impact on the produced particles, not only complicating the study of particle interactions but also inducing novel physical phenomena. To explore the nature of these fields and their interactions with deconfined quarks, we provide a detailed overview, encompassing theoretical estimations of their generation and evolution, as well as experimental efforts to detect them. We also provide physical interpretations of the discovered results and discuss potential directions for future investigations.

Measurement of transverse single-spin asymmetries for dijet production in polarized proton-proton collisions at √s = 200 GeV

We report a new measurement of transverse single-spin asymmetries for dijet production in collisions of polarized protons at √ s = 200 GeV. Possible correlations between the proton spin and the transverse momenta of its partons, mutually orthogonal, with each perpendicular to the proton momentum direction, are probed at high Q 2 ≈160 GeV 2 . The associated Sivers observable ${\langle}k_T{\rangle}$, the average parton transverse momentum, is extracted using simple kinematics. Nonzero Sivers effects are observed for the first time in proton-proton collisions, but only when the jets are sorted by their net charge, which enhances the u- or d-quark contributions to separate data samples. This also enables a determination of the individual partonic contributions to the observed asymmetries.
