Preliminary Investigation of Target keff Search for Fuel Feed in MSRs

Fluid fuel molten salt reactor (MSR) concepts may achieve continuous-at-power operation with continuous or batch fresh fuel feed to counter reactivity loss from fuel burnup and fission product buildup. Accurate modeling and simulation of MSRs requires consideration of online fuel feed during depletion as well as a capability to determine the required feed amount to maintain a target multiplication factor (keff). As a first step supporting a full implementation of a new search capability into the SCALE code system’s TRITON reactor physics and depletion sequence, a preliminary investigation was performed to identify the best approach for a critical feed search capability considering computation time and accuracy. Using a simple iterative approach in which initial feed amounts were guessed based on previous depletion steps, the main drivers of computation time were found as the Monte Carlo neutron transport settings and the applied tolerance for the target keff. In the applied model, with tight convergence criteria (keff convergence to 8 pcm and a tolerance of ±15 pcm), the critical search calculation required twice the number of neutron transport calculations compared to a depletion calculation without critical search. In contrast, with a relaxed tolerance of ±50 pcm, the overall computation time for the critical search for merely increased by 30-40%. Further studies will be performed before implementing the critical search capability into TRITON.

Enhanced Validation of Advanced Battery Supply Chains (EVALS) Overview

EVALS is a consortium funded by the Vehicle Technologies Office at DOE involving Idaho National Lab, Argonne National Lab, and NREL. The goal of EVALS is to fully develop a suite of tools that support domestic electric vehicle manufacturing through evaluation of domestic primary resources and acceleration of their path to domestic material and battery production. This talk will focus on describing the EVALS project and discussing initial results regarding domestic LiFePO4 precursor sourcing and impacts on the domestic manufacturing supply chain.

A New NCSP Nuclear Criticality Safety Training and Pipeline Program

Nuclear criticality safety (NCS) training is vital and mandatory for NCS professionals to ensure the safe processing, handling, storage, and transportation of fissionable materials outside nuclear reactors. The requirement for this training is prescribed in several international and domestic guidance documents.

Advanced Transmission Technologies – GETs and HPCs Session 1: ATT Foundations and Dynamic Line Ratings (DLRs)

The INL TADA GETs Cohort Session 1, held on November 4, 2025, convened experts to address the integration of advanced transmission technologies, including Grid-Enhancing Technologies (GETs) and High Performance Conductors (HPCs), with a focus on digital assurance challenges. The session highlighted the growing importance of cybersecurity, supply chain transparency, reliability, and business risk management in deploying GETs, especially Dynamic Line Ratings (DLRs). Participants examined how expanded attack surfaces, limited vendor pools, and new regulatory requirements—such as FERC Orders 881, 2023, and 1920—are influencing utilities and technology providers. The workshop underscored the need for cyber-informed engineering, secure-by-design principles, and practical risk management strategies, while fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing among industry peers. Technical discussions covered the evolution from static to dynamic line ratings, complexities of cloud-based architectures, and NERC CIP compliance challenges. The session concluded with a collaborative risk exercise and a preview of future workshops on advanced power flow control and transmission topology optimization, reinforcing the cohort’s commitment to advancing digital assurance in the energy sector.
