Study of advanced composite structural design concepts for an arrow wing supersonic cruise configuration

Based on estimated graphite and boron fiber properties, allowable stresses and strains were established for advanced composite materials. Stiffened panel and conventional sandwich panel concepts were designed and analyzed, using graphite/polyimide and boron/polyimide materials. The conventional sandwich panel was elected as the structural concept for the modified wing structure. Upper and lower surface panels of the arrow wing structure were then redesigned, using high strength graphite/polyimide sandwich panels, retaining the titanium spars and ribs from the prior study. The ATLAS integrated analysis and design system was used for stress analysis and automated resizing of surface panels. Flutter analysis of the hybrid structure showed a significant decrease in flutter speed relative to the titanium wing design. The flutter speed was increased to that of the titanium design by selective increase in laminate thickness and by using graphite fibers with properties intermediate between high strength and high modulus values.

Quantitative mapping of rainfall rates over the oceans utilizing Nimbus-5 ESMR data

The electrically scanning microwave radiometer (ESMR) data from the Nimbus 5 satellite was used to deduce estimates of precipitation amount over the oceans. An atlas of the global oceanic rainfall was prepared and the global rainfall maps analyzed and related to available ground truth information as well as to large scale processes in the atmosphere. It was concluded that the ESMR system provides the most reliable and direct approach yet known for the estimation of rainfall over sparsely documented, wide oceanic regions.

NASA satellite to study earth's oceans from space

The feasibility of using microwave instruments to scan the world's oceans from space in order to obtain scientific data for oceanographers, meteorologists, and commercial users of the seas will be demonstrated during the mission of the Seasat A satellite which will be launched into an 800 kilometer high near circular orbit by an Agena Atlas-Agena launch vehicle. The satellite configuration, its payload, and data collection and processing capabilities are described as well as the launch vehicle system.

Airborne infrared interferometric observations and analysis of stratospheric trace constituents

Infrared interferometric observations of key trace constituents of the stratosphere have been obtained. The NASA Lear Airborne Observatory with the Grumman airborne interferometer system was flown in the lower stratosphere at an altitude of 13.7 km to obtain transmission spectra in the 2800-6000 per cm region at a resolution of 2.5 per cm using the moon as a source. An atmospheric modeling program and the AFGL line parameter atlas are used to identify H2O, CH4, O3 and other trace constituents and to derive stratospheric column densities (molecules/sq cm).

Applications Technology Satellite program

The Applications Technology Satellite (ATS) program has involved geosynchronous spacecraft technology made possible by the increased capability of the Atlas-Agena launch vehicle. The ATS-1-5 program developed spin stabilized and gravity gradient stabilized spacecraft for geosynchronous orbit, earth-oriented antennae for increased antenna gain, earth-scanning meteorological experiments for continuous weather monitoring, and made possible satellite communications to mobile terminals. The ATS-6 program developed a space-deployed, high-gain antenna for color television broadcast to low-cost ground terminals and precise spacecraft attitude control for pointing, slewing, and tracking applications. All of the ATS program objectives were successfully met, except for the gravity gradient experiments. ATS-1, -3, -5, and -6 are in orbit and operational.

Carbon and nitrogen abundances in red giant stars in the globular cluster 47 Tucanae

The effects of changes in temperature, gravity, overall metal abundance, and carbon and nitrogen abundances have been investigated for model stellar spectra and colors representing globular-cluster giants of moderate metal deficiency. The results are presented in the form of spectral atlases and theoretical color-color diagrams. Using these results, approximate abundances of carbon and nitrogen have been derived for some red giant stars in 47 Tuc, from intermediate- and low-dispersion spectra and from intermediate- and narrow-band photometry. In all the normal giants studied, nitrogen is overabundant by up to about a factor of 5 (the precise value depends on the adopted carbon abundance), with different enhancements for different giants. The observational material is not sufficient to distinguish between a normal carbon abundance and a slight carbon depletion for the giant-branch stars, but carbon appears to be somewhat depleted in stars on the asymptotic giant branch. A most probable value of M/H = -0.8 for the overall cluster metal abundance is suggested from analysis of Stromgren photometry of red horizontal-branch stars.

Twenty southern peculiar emission-line stars

Observational data for 20 southern stars having emission-line spectra that suggest a significant degree of mass ejection are given in order to present an atlas of their spectra and to give a quantitative description of their appearance during the 1961-62 epoch. Most of the stars are P Cygni stars; others include nova-like, peculiar Be, and symbiotic stars, as well as stellar planetary nebulae and emission-line binaries, all of whose spectra were obtained with the Newtonian two-prism Zeiss Spectrograph and the 74-inch reflector at Mount Stromlo Observatory. It is noted that among the P Cygni stars, there is a strong correlation between the a-e expansion velocity and the strength of Balmer emission, while in both the P Cygni and the Bep stars, there is positive dependence of Fe II and negative dependence of (Fe II) emission strengths on Balmer emission strength.

Seasat views North America, the Caribbean, and Western Europe with imaging radar

Forty-one digitally correlated Seasat synthetic-aperture radar images of land areas in North America, the Caribbean, and Western Europe are presented to demonstrate this microwave orbital imagery. The characteristics of the radar images, the types of information that can be extracted from them, and certain of their inherent distortions are briefly described. Each atlas scene covers an area of 90 X 90 kilometers, with the exception of the one that is the Nation's Capital. The scenes are grouped according to salient features of geology, hydrology and water resources, urban landcover, or agriculture. Each radar image is accompanied by a corresponding image in the optical or near-infrared range, or by a simple sketch map to illustrate features of interest. Characteristics of the Seasat radar imaging system are outlined.
