Measurement of ψ ( 2 S ) nuclear modification at backward and forward rapidity in p + p , p + Al , and p + Au collisions at s N N = 200 GeV

Suppression of the J/ψ nuclear-modification factor has been seen as a trademark signature of final-state effects in large collision systems for decades. In small systems, the nuclear modification was attributed to cold-nuclear-matter effects until the observation of strong differential suppression of the ψ(2S) state in p+A and d+A collisions suggested the presence of final-state effects. Results of J/ψ and ψ(2S) measurements in the dimuon decay channel are presented here for p+p, p+Al, and p+Au collision systems at $\sqrt{^{S}NN}$ = 200 GeV. The results are predominantly shown in the form of the nuclear-modification factor, R pA , the ratio of the ψ(2S) invariant yield per nucleon-nucleon collision in collisions of proton on target nucleus to that in p+p collisions. Finally, measurements of the J/ψ and ψ(2S) nuclear-modification factor are compared with shadowing and transport-model predictions, as well as to complementary measurements at Large-Hadron-Collider energies.

Comparison of transverse single-spin asymmetries for forward π 0 production in polarized pp , p Al and p Au collisions at nucleon pair c.m. energy √sNN=200 GeV

The STAR collaboration reports a measurement of the transverse single-spin asymmetries, A N , for neutral pions produced in polarized proton collisions with protons ( p p ), with aluminum nuclei ( p Al ) and with gold nuclei ( p Au ) at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV. Neutral pions are observed in the forward direction relative to the transversely polarized proton beam, in the pseudorapidity region 2.7 < η < 3.8 . Results are presented for π 0 s observed in the STAR forward meson spectrometer electromagnetic calorimeter in narrow Feynman x ( x F ) and transverse momentum ( p T ) bins, spanning the range 0.17 < x F < 0.81 and 1.7 < p T < 6.0 GeV / c . For fixed x F < 0.47 , the asymmetries are found to rise with increasing transverse momentum. For larger x F , the asymmetry flattens or falls as p T increases. Parametrizing the ratio r ( A ) ≡ A N ( p A ) / A N ( p p ) = A P over the kinematic range, the ratio r ( A ) is found to depend only weakly on A , with ( P ) = - 0.027 ± 0.005 . No significant difference in P is observed between the low- p T region, p T < 2.5 GeV / c , where gluon saturation effects may play a role, and the high- p T region, p T > 2.5 GeV / c . It is further observed that the value of A N is significantly larger for events with a large- p T isolated π 0 than for events with a nonisolated π 0 accompanied by additional jetlike fragments. The nuclear dependence r ( A ) is similar for isolated and nonisolated π 0 events.

Time-resolved investigation of subnanosecond radiation from Al wire hybrid X pinches

K-shell x-ray spectra from Al wire hybrid X pinches have been studied using an x-ray streak camera with better than 0.1-ns time resolution together with a Focusing Spectrograph with Spatial Resolution (FSSR) spectrograph. High-intensity radiation with a continuumlike spectrum was observed in the subnanosecond initial phase of the x-ray pulse generated by the hybrid X pinch (HXP). Here, the absence of spectral lines in this phase and the extremely small x-ray source size indicates the importance of radiative processes in the final phase implosion dynamics. Plasma parameters in the following phases of the HXP were determined from analysis of the line intensities. Point-projection radiography together with a slit-step wedge camera and an FSSR spectrograph without time resolution were used to show the number of radiation sources, and to give information on the time-integrated photon energy spectrum.

Experimental evidence of early-time saturation of the ion-Weibel instability in counterstreaming plasmas of CH, Al, and Cu

The collisionless ion-Weibel instability is a leading candidate mechanism for the formation of collisionless shocks in many astrophysical systems, where the typical distance between particle collisions is much larger than the system size. Multiple laboratory experiments aimed at studying this process utilize laser-driven (I≳10 15 W/cm 2 ), counterstreaming plasma flows (V≲ 2000 km/s) to create conditions unstable to Weibel-filamentation and growth. This technique intrinsically produces temporally varying plasma conditions at the midplane of the interaction where Weibel-driven B fields are generated and studied. Experiments discussed herein demonstrate robust formation of Weibel-driven B fields under multiple plasma conditions using CH, Al, and Cu plasmas. Linear theory based on benchmarked radiation-hydrodynamic FLASH calculations is compared with Fourier analyses of proton images taken ~5–6 linear growth times into the evolution. Our new analyses presented here indicate that the low-density, high-velocity plasma-conditions present during the first linear-growth time (~300–500 ps) sets the spectral characteristics of Weibel filaments during the entire evolution. It is shown that the dominant wavelength (~300 μm) at saturation persists well into the nonlinear phase, consistent with theory under these experimental conditions. However, estimates of B-field strength, while difficult to determine accurately due to the path-integrated nature of proton imaging, are shown to be in the ~10–30 T range, an order of magnitude above the expected saturation limit in homogenous plamas but consistent with enhanced B fields in the midplane due to temporally varying plasma conditions in experiments.

Lifetime-Limited Interrogation of Two Independent 27 Al + Clocks Using Correlation Spectroscopy

Laser decoherence limits the stability of optical clocks by broadening the observable resonance linewidths and adding noise during the dead time between clock probes. Correlation spectroscopy avoids these limitations by measuring correlated atomic transitions between two ensembles, which provides a frequency difference measurement independent of laser noise. Here, we apply this technique to perform stability measurements between two independent clocks based on the 1 S 0 ↔ 3 P 0 transition in 27 Al + . By stabilizing the dominant sources of differential phase noise between the two clocks, we observe coherence between them during synchronous Ramsey interrogations as long as 8 s at a frequency of 1.12 × 10 15 Hz. Here, the observed contrast in the correlation spectroscopy signal is consistent with the 20.6 s 3 P 0 state lifetime and represents a measurement instability of (1.8 ± 0.5) × 10 –16 /√τ/s for averaging periods longer than the probe duration when dead time is negligible.

Czochralski growth and characterization of the multicomponent garnet (Lu 1/4 Yb 1/4 Y 1/4 Gd 1/4 ) 3 Al 5 O 12

This work demonstrates the potential for practical scalable growth of complex garnets and evaluates the implications of a multicomponent composition in the optical quality and elemental distribution of a Czochralski-grown crystal. Furthermore, our experimental approach was designed to elucidate the relation between a complex garnet composition ( Lu 1 / 4 Yb 1 / 4 Y 1 / 4 Gd 1 / 4 ) 3 Al 5 O 12 , crystal growth parameters, crystal structural, and elemental homogeneity. Our hypothesis is that combining multiple rare earths (REs) that will fractionally occupy the dodecahedral site in the aluminum garnet structure will result in a stable, single garnet compound that can be grown by the Czochralski method. Single-crystal and powder x-ray diffraction indicated a single garnet phase with an increasing unit cell volume from seed to tail. In addition, we propose that the pattern of elemental segregation will be based on the deviation of the ionic radius of each constituent RE from the average RE ionic radius of the multicomponent garnet. Electron probe microanalysis revealed that ions that are smaller than that average ( Lu 3 + and Yb 3 + ) are preferentially incorporated in the crystal, while elements that are larger than that average ( Gd 3 + ) are rejected. The ionic radius of Y 3 + is close to that average and yttrium segregation was minimal. The concentrations of the four REs are closer to stoichiometric on the tail end of the boule. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy analysis reveal Gd-rich inclusions with eutectic microstructures in the tail end of the boule.

Buffer-layer-controlled nickeline vs zinc-blende/wurtzite-type MnTe growths on c -plane Al 2 O 3 substrates

In the recent past, MnTe has proven to be a crucial component of the intrinsic magnetic topological insulator (IMTI) family [MnTe] m [Bi2Te 3 ] n , which hosts a wide range of magneto-topological properties depending on the choice of m and n. However, bulk crystal growth allows only a few combinations of m and n for these IMTIs due to the strict limitations of the thermodynamic growth conditions. One way to overcome this challenge is to utilize atomic layer-by-layer molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) technique, which allows arbitrary sequences of [MnTe]m and [Bi 2 Te 3 ] n to be formed beyond the thermodynamic limit. For such MBE growth, finding optimal growth templates and conditions for the parent building block, MnTe, is a key requirement. Here, we report that two different hexagonal phases of MnTe - nickeline (NC) and zinc-blende/wurtzite (ZB-WZ) structures, with distinct in-plane lattice constants of 4.20 ± 0.04 Å and 4.39 ± 0.04 Å, respectively - can be selectively grown on c-plane Al 2 O 3 substrates using different buffer layers and growth temperatures. Moreover, we provide the first comparative studies of different MnTe phases using atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and show that ZB and WZ-like stacking sequences can easily alternate between the two. Surprisingly, In 2 Se 3 buffer layer, despite its lattice constant (4.02 Å) being closer to that of the NC phase, fosters the ZB-WZ instead, whereas Bi 2 Te 3 , sharing the same lattice constant (4.39 Å) with the ZB-WZ phase, fosters the NC phase. Furthermore, these discoveries suggest that lattice matching is not always the most critical factor determining the preferred phase during epitaxial growth. Overall, this will deepen our understanding of epitaxial growth modes for chalcogenide materials and accelerate progress toward new IMTI phases as well as other magneto-topological applications.

Simulated structure and thermodynamics of decagonal Al-Co-Cu quasicrystals

Atomic structures of Al-Co-Cu decagonal quasicrystals (dQCs) are investigated using empirical oscillating pair potentials (EOPP) in molecular dynamic (MD) simulations that we enhance by Monte Carlo (MC) swapping of chemical species and replica exchange. Predicted structures exhibit planar decagonal tiling patterns and are periodic along the perpendicular direction. We then recalculate the energies of promising structures using first-principles density functional theory (DFT), along with energies of competing phases. We find that our τ -inflated sequence of QC approximants (QCAs) are energetically unstable at low temperature by at least 3 meV/atom. Extending our study to finite temperatures by calculating harmonic vibrational entropy, as well as anharmonic contributions that include chemical species swaps and tile flips, our results suggest that the quasicrystal phase is entropically stabilized at temperatures in the range 600-800 K and above. It decomposes into ordinary (though complex) crystal phases at low temperatures, including a partially disordered B2-type phase. We discuss the influence of density and composition on QC phase stability; we compare the structural differences between Co-rich and Cu-rich quasicrystals; and we analyze the role of entropy in stabilizing the quasicrystal, concluding with a discussion of the possible existence of “high entropy” quasicrystals. Demonstration of Passivation Using a Low-Temperature-Grown, Al-Containing Window Layer by HVPE

We present hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE) growth of single junction GaAs solar cells with Al0.4Ga0.6As front passivation layers at a growth temperature of 650°C. Devices achieved a short circuit current density of ~27.52 mA/cm2 after anti-reflection coating, similar to devices that used GaInP windows with the same bandgap, indicating that AlGaAs provides front-surface passivation resulting in a low interface recombination velocity. The low temperature growth of Al containing III-V materials by HVPE allows for compatibility with In-containing alloys in high-efficiency III-V device structures for various applications.

Al 0.7 Ga 0.3 N MESFET With All-Refractory Metal Process for High Temperature Operation

In this work, ultrawide bandgap Al 0.7 Ga 0.3 N MESFETs with refractory Tungsten Schottky and Ohmic contacts are studied in 300–675 K environments. Variable-temperature dc electrical transport reveals large ON-state drain current densities for an AlGaN device: 209 mA/mm at 300 K and 156 mA/mm at 675 K in the ON-state (25% reduction). Drain and gate currents are only weakly temperature-dependent, suggesting potential for engineering temperature invariant operation. The ON-/ OFF-ratio is limited by OFF-state leakage through the gate, which is attributed to damage from sputter deposition. Future work using refractory metals with larger work functions that are deposited by electron beam deposition is proposed.

Polarity effects on wake–up behavior of Al 0.94 B 0.06 N ferroelectrics

Wurtzite ferroelectric materials are promising candidates for energy-efficient memory technologies, particularly for applications requiring high operating temperatures. Asymmetric wake-up behaviors, in which the polarization reversal depends both on polarity and cycle number for the first few dozen cycles, must be better understood for reliable device operation. Here, the detailed analysis of the asymmetric wake-up behavior of thin film Al 0.94 B 0.06 N was performed combining time-resolved switching measurements with Rayleigh analysis, piezoelectric measurements, and etching experiments of progressively switched samples. Furthermore, the analysis shows that the gradual opening of the polarization hysteresis loops associated with wake-up is driven by a gradual increase in the domain-wall density and/or domain-wall mobility with electric field cycle to the polarity opposite to the growth polarity. The insights of this discovery will help to guide interface and polarity design in the eventual deployment of reliable devices based on these materials.

A High-Ceramic-Loading LATP–PVDF–Al 2 O 3 Composite Film for Lithium-Ion Batteries With Favorable Porous Microstructure and Enhanced Thermal Stability

A separator plays a crucial role in a Li-ion battery to carry liquid electrolytes while preventing short-circuiting between electrodes. Nevertheless, conventional commercial separators often exhibit poor wettability and are prone to shrink at elevated temperatures due to their limited thermal stability. Herein, we report a heat-resistant LATP–PVDF–Al 2 O 3 composite film with outstanding wetting performance. The thin film was prepared using ball mill mixing and tape-casting processes. Two solvents, NMP and glycerol, were applied to prepare the slurry, and a favorable microstructure in the film was created after drying. Here, the ionic conductivity of the film was tested at 1.39 mS cm –1 when paired with liquid electrolyte, almost double that of the commercial counterpart. The high ceramic loading of 70% improved both the thermal shrinkage resistance and dendrite inhibition of the membrane. When assembled in an NMC half-cell, the cycling capacity retentions of 92.8% and 92.1% are achieved after 50 cycles at 0.5 C and 1 C, demonstrating its capability to be used in Li-ion batteries.

Ultrawide bandgap vertical β-(Al x Ga1 −x )2O3 Schottky barrier diodes on free-standing β-Ga2O3 substrates

Ultrawide bandgap β-(AlxGa1−x)2O3 vertical Schottky barrier diodes on (010) β-Ga2O3 substrates are demonstrated. The β-(AlxGa1−x)2O3 epilayer has an Al composition of 21% and a nominal Si doping of 2 × 1017 cm−3 grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Pt/Ti/Au has been employed as the top Schottky contact, whereas Ti/Au has been utilized as the bottom Ohmic contact. The fabricated devices show excellent rectification with a high on/off ratio of ∼109, a turn-on voltage of 1.5 V, and an on-resistance of 3.4 mΩ cm2. Temperature-dependent forward current-voltage characteristics show effective Schottky barrier height varied from 0.91 to 1.18 eV while the ideality factor from 1.8 to 1.1 with increasing temperatures, which is ascribed to the inhomogeneity of the metal/semiconductor interface. The Schottky barrier height was considered a Gaussian distribution of potential, where the extracted mean barrier height and a standard deviation at zero bias were 1.81 and 0.18 eV, respectively. A comprehensive analysis of the device leakage was performed to identify possible leakage mechanisms by studying temperature-dependent reverse current-voltage characteristics. At reverse bias, due to the large Schottky barrier height, the contributions from thermionic emission and thermionic field emission are negligible. By fitting reverse leakage currents at different temperatures, it was identified that Poole–Frenkel emission and trap-assisted tunneling are the main leakage mechanisms at high- and low-temperature regimes, respectively. Electrons can tunnel through the Schottky barrier assisted by traps at low temperatures, while they can escape these traps at high temperatures and be transported under high electric fields. This work can serve as an important reference for the future development of ultrawide bandgap β-(AlxGa1−x)2O3 power electronics, RF electronics, and ultraviolet photonics.

Characterization of groove density variation of VLS gratings with ALS XROL LTP-II in different operation modes

The long trace profiler, LTP-II, available at the Advanced Light Source (ALS) X-ray Optics Laboratory (XROL), was recently upgraded by replacing a multimode diode laser light source with a single-mode, wavelength-stabilized, fibercoupled diode laser system. The upgrade enables us to reliably characterize the lateral variation of groove density of variable-line-spacing (VLS) x-ray diffraction gratings. Here, we discuss the LTP-II performance with an example of measurements with a VLS grating with the groove density at the grating center of 300 lines/mm. For the measurements, we use the LTP-II in two different operation arrangements, the single Gaussian beam and the pencil beam interferometer arrangements. For each operation arrangement, we apply two data processing algorithms: with calculating the centroid position and with determining the position of a characteristic features of the detected beam intensity distributions. Additionally, we discuss the observed strong correlation between the LTP-II modes of operation and the resulted (extracted) groove density variations. We also speculate on possible origin of the correlation.

AL-ASMR: Active Learning of Atomistic Surrogate Models for Rare Events

Atomistic simulation with artificial intelligence (AI) is an emerging tool for understanding materials' properties and behaviors and predicting novel materials with optimized/targeted properties. Neural network potentials (NNPs) are outstanding in this field as they have shown a comparable accuracy to ab initio electronic structure calculations for reproducing potential energy surfaces while being several orders of magnitude faster. However, such NNPs can perform poorly outside of their training domain and typically fail catastrophically in the prediction of rare events in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. For effective AL loops to distinguish the informative data from enhanced sampled configurations, we developed a decision engine by configurational similarity and uncertainty quantification (UQ) with data augmentation.
