Modification of lithium electrodeposition behavior by variation of electrode distance

Developing a better understanding and control over the lithium electrodeposition behavior will assist with the commercial application of lithium metal anodes for rechargeable batteries. Despite intensive research over the past decade, our understanding of the deposition of lithium is limited. Here a new observation on the effect of distance between the working electrode and the counter electrode for electrochemical lithium deposition behavior is reported. From this fundamental investigation of distance, the high lithium ion concentration regions formed by release of lithium ions from the counter electrode modify the lithium deposition behavior on the working electrode, resulting in the generation of non-uniform lithium dendrites with a thick diversely composed surface film. Alternatively, increasing the distance between the electrodes results in the deposition of a spherical lithium morphology with a thin LiF rich surface film. Here, this fundamental study provides a deeper understanding of correlation between lithium deposition behavior and electrode separation and provides insight to inhibit lithium dendrite formation.

A hierarchical Bayesian model for background variation in radiation source localization

In this paper, we apply a new model to account for varying background radiation in radiological source localization. We present a hierarchical Bayesian model that simultaneously infers background and source location parameters without requiring separate estimation of the background radiation at each detector location. We employ a simplified photon transport model to reduce the computational expense of Bayesian model calibration. Furthermore, we demonstrate the model accuracy by localizing a cesium-137 source in a simulated city block, and we analyze experimental field measurements with varying background. In both cases, the model provides sufficient fidelity that we can locate the source while simultaneously estimating background radiation.

A low-frequency buncher field-variation study on a 750 keV H – beam to increase Drift Tube Linac capture

We report low-frequency (such as 16.77 MHz) RF bunchers are widely used in RF accelerator systems for longitudinal compression of pulses into a single RF bucket, which increases instantaneous beam intensity for time-dependent studies. In this study, the dependency of capture into a 201.25 MHz Drift Tube Linac (DTL) was measured as a function of gap voltage for a 16.77 MHz buncher on chopped H - beam (approximately 25 ns at 750 keV, 10 mA peak current). The multiparticle code PARMILA was used to simulate the phase-space distribution of the 10 mA, 750 keV, H - beam at the entrance to DTL with a wide range of the Low-Frequency Buncher (LFB) field (10 kV to 35 kV). The measurement and simulation indicated that the DTL capture could be dilute (reduced) for a non-optimized buncher field to a pre-configured beamline geometry. The data shows that changing the bunch field while keeping the incoming beam current and energy constant does not significantly alter the beam’s emittance. However, downstream beam capture into the DTL is changed for a non-optimized phase-space bunching distance with the buncher field.
