Crystal structure analysis of intermetallic compounds

Study concerns crystal structures and lattice parameters for a number of new intermetallic compounds. Crystal structure data have been collected on equiatomic compounds, formed between an element of the Sc, Ti, V, or Cr group and an element of the Co or Ni group. The data, obtained by conventional methods, are presented in an easily usable tabular form.

Reusable Aerospace Passenger Transport - Study of Incremental Development Approaches Summary Report

This report summarizes the results of studies of economical orbital transportation systems, exploring, in particular , possible options for time - phases and incremental development of such systems. The major conclusions are : 1. Incremental development is a practical way for development of an economic logistics system, minimizing development risk and annual funding, and offering planning flexibility at only a nominal penalty in total systems cost. 2. The most promising first development appears to be that of a re- usable payload carrier with a capacity of 9 to 12 passengers. 3. Systems comparisons show that, for the foreseeable variations of the mission market, a partially reusable concept could bring about most of the program savings that can be expected from reusability at moderate development risk and funding rate. 4. A further development leading to a fully reusable system has high risk and uncertain payoff. Conceivably, at that time, a more advanced concept might be introduced.

Estimating sensitivity of vacuum gages

Gage sensitivity for a particular gas is estimated using the known performance of the gage with a reference gas /nitrogen/ and employing several empirical rules which have usable accuracy. Relative gage sensitivities have been estimated for over 100 gases and vapors.

High temperature glass coatings for superalloys and refractory metals

New glasses are used as protective coatings on metals and alloys susceptible to oxidation at high temperatures in oxidizing atmospheres. Glasses are stable and solid at temperatures up to 1000 deg C, adhere well to metal surfaces, and are usable for metals with broad range of expansion coefficients.

Improved insulating materials effective at extremely high temperatures

Wrapped molybdenum foil with silica fabric insulation and wrapped tantalum foil with carbon fabric insulation are usable to 1367 K and up to 2478 K, respectively, both offer marked space saving and efficiency in high temperature operations. Graph displays temperature profiles at end of firing period.

Evaluation of metal matrix composites

The results of an evaluation of candidate metal-matrix composite materials for shuttle space radiators mounted to external structure are presented. The evaluation was specifically applicable to considerations of the manufacturing and properties of a potential space radiator. Two candidates, boron/aluminum and graphite/aluminum were obtained or made in various forms and tested in sufficient depth to allow selection of one of the two for future scale-up programs. The effort accomplished on this program verified that aluminum reinforced with boron was within the state-of-the-art in industry and possessed properties usable in the external skin areas available for shuttle radiators where re-entry temperatures will not exceed 800 F. It further demonstrated that graphite/aluminum has an apparently attractive future for space applications but requires extension development prior to scale-up.

Crew interface specification development study for in-flight maintenance and stowage functions

The need and potential solutions for an orderly systems engineering approach to the definition, management and documentation requirements for in-flight maintenance, assembly, servicing, and stowage process activities of the flight crews of future spacecraft were investigated. These processes were analyzed and described using a new technique (mass/function flow diagramming), developed during the study, to give visibility to crew functions and supporting requirements, including data products. This technique is usable by NASA for specification baselines and can assist the designer in identifying both upper and lower level requirements associated with these processes. These diagrams provide increased visibility into the relationships between functions and related equipments being utilized and managed and can serve as a common communicating vehicle between the designer, program management, and the operational planner. The information and data product requirements to support the above processes were identified along with optimum formats and contents of these products. The resulting data product concepts are presented to support these in-flight maintenance and stowage processes.
