On volatile element trends in gas-rich meteorites

Study of 10 volatile elements (and non-volatile Co) in co-existing light and dark portions of 6 gas-rich chondrites indicates patterns of distinct but non-uniform enrichment of volatile elements. Only Cs is enriched in all samples; Bi and Tl enrichments covary. The observed enrichments are inconsistent with prior suggestions of admixture of C1 or C2 chondritic matter, whether pristine or partly devolatilized, but suggest that both light and dark portions of each chondrite represents a compositionally more extended sampling of parental nebular material than hitherto known.

Measurement of soil moisture trends with airborne scatterometers

The author has identified the following significant results. Cursory examination of the data indicates that the listed row tillage practices at 90 deg to the radar beam are approximately 12.5db higher than other comparable agricultural land. The Seasat radar data show evidence that the high return occurs only at a narrow range in look direction near the 90 deg. Such a high increase in return compared to a 15db range in film response would indicate that rows seen crosswise would saturate optically processed data. This response to row direction will have an adverse effect on monitoring agricultural lands with L band radar systems. Preliminary examination indicates that there is no sensitivity to soil moisture at the 5 deg look angle when using a like-polarized L band system. Some sensitivity was evident at a look angle of 20 deg and only a weak sensitivity was indicated at 40 deg look angle. At both 20 deg and 40 deg there is a significant response to soil moisture and none to row direction. Steep angles or the 5 deg look angle using cross polarized (HB) L band system appear insensitive to row direction and soil moisture.

Trends in reliability modeling technology for fault tolerant systems

Developments in reliability modeling for large fault tolerant avionic computing systems are presented. Issues of state size and complexity, fault coverage, and practical computation are addressed. A two-fold developmental effort is described based on the structural and fault coverage modeling approaches. A technique which was successfully applied to an 865 state pure death stationary Markov model is presented. Of particular interest is a short computer program which executes very quickly to produce reliability results of a large state space model. This model also incorporates fault coverage states for processor, memory, and bus line replaceable units. A second structural reliability modeling scheme is aimed at solving nonstationary Markov models. This technique provides the tool required for studying the reliability of systems with nonconstant failure rates and includes intermittent/transient faults, electronic hardware which exhibits decreasing failure rates, and hydromechanical devices which typically have wearout failure mechanisms. Several aspects of fault coverage, including modeling and data measurement of intermittent/transient faults and latent faults, are elucidated and illustrated. The CARE II (computer-aided reliability estimation) coverage is presented and shortcomings to be eliminated are discussed.

A study of trends and techniques for space base electronics

A sputtering system was developed to deposit aluminum and aluminum alloys by the dc sputtering technique. This system is designed for a high level of cleanliness and for monitoring the deposition parameters during film preparation. This system is now ready for studying the deposition and annealing parameters upon double-level metal preparation. A technique recently applied for semiconductor analysis, the finite element method, was studied for use in the computer modeling of two dimensional MOS transistor structures. It was concluded that the method has not been sufficiently well developed for confident use at this time. An algorithm was developed for confident use at this time. An algorithm was developed for implementing a computer study which is based upon the finite difference method. The program which was developed was modified and used to calculate redistribution data for boron and phosphorous which had been predeposited by ion implantation with range and straggle conditions. Data were generated for 111 oriented SOS films with redistribution in N2, dry O2 and steam ambients.

Current jet fuel trends

Data concerning the properties of commercial jet fuels during the period between 1974 and 1979 are discussed. During this period the average aromatics content of fuels increased from 16% to 17.5%. It is evident that the arrival of Alaska North Slope crude in 1977 had a significant impact upon the aromatics content of jet fuel supply at West Coast points with less effect upon the entire United States domestic market. This increase in aromatics has not been accompanied by a corresponding reduction in burning quality as measured by smoke point. There has been a reduction of .6 smoke point on the average. Looking at hydrogen content as a measure of burning quality, the all refinery average calculated hydrogen for 1978 was approximately 13.7%. The relationship between hydrogen content and aromatics content shows a slope of .043% reduction in hydrogen for 1% increase in aromatics.

Data and information requirement trends in remote sensing

Two characteristics of remote sensing - data volume and information volatility - are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the NASA Applications Data Service and Remotely Piloted Vehicle (RPV) television. It is noted that the data volume and information volatility in a given remote sensing system require a careful choice of the point in the end-to-end system at which data compression and/or information extraction take place.

A study of trends and techniques for space base electronics

Furnaces and photolithography related equipment were applied to experiments on double layer metal. The double layer metal activity emphasized wet chemistry techniques. By incorporating the following techniques: (1) ultrasonic etching of the vias; (2) premetal clean using a modified buffered hydrogen fluoride; (3) phosphorus doped vapor; and (4) extended sintering, yields of 98 percent were obtained using the standard test pattern. The two dimensional modeling problems have stemmed from, alternately, instability and too much computation time to achieve convergence.

Materials processing in space: Future technology trends

NASA's materials processing in space- (MPS) program involves both ground and space-based research and looks to frequent and cost effective access to the space environment for necessary progress. The first generation payloads for research are under active design and development. They will be hosted by the Space Shuttle/Spacelab on Earth orbital flights in the early 1980's. hese missions will focus on the acquisition of materials behavior research data, the potential enhancement of Earth based technology, and the implementation of space based processing for specialized, high value materials. Some materials to be studied in these payloads may provide future breakthroughs for stronger alloys, ultrapure glasses, superior electronic components, and new or better chemicals. An operational 25 kW power system is expected to be operational to support sustained, systematic space processing activity beyond shuttle capability for second generation payload systems for SPACELAB and free flyer missions to study solidification and crystal growth and to process metal/alloys, glasses/ceramics, and chemicals and biologicals.

A study of trends and techniques for space base electronics

The use of dry processing and alternate dielectrics for processing wafers is reported. A two dimensional modeling program was written for the simulation of short channel MOSFETs with nonuniform substrate doping. A key simplifying assumption used is that the majority carriers can be represented by a sheet charge at the silicon dioxide-silicon interface. In solving current continuity equation, the program does not converge. However, solving the two dimensional Poisson equation for the potential distribution was achieved. The status of other 2D MOSFET simulation programs are summarized.

A diagnostic model for studying daytime urban air quality trends

A single cell Eulerian photochemical air quality simulation model was developed and validated for selected days of the 1976 St. Louis Regional Air Pollution Study (RAPS) data sets; parameterizations of variables in the model and validation studies using the model are discussed. Good agreement was obtained between measured and modeled concentrations of NO, CO, and NO2 for all days simulated. The maximum concentration of O3 was also predicted well. Predicted species concentrations were relatively insensitive to small variations in CO and NOx emissions and to the concentrations of species which are entrained as the mixed layer rises.

Advanced aircraft engine materials trends

Recent activities of the Lewis Research Center are reviewed which are directed toward developing materials for rotating hot section components for aircraft gas turbines. Turbine blade materials activities are directed at increasing metal temperatures approximately 100 C compared to current directionally solidified alloys by use of oxide dispersion strengthening or tungsten alloy wire reinforcement of nickel or iron base superalloys. The application of thermal barrier coatings offers a promise of increasing gas temperatures an additional 100 C with current cooling technology. For turbine disk alloys, activities are directed toward reducing the cost of turbine disks by 50 percent through near net shape fabrication of prealloyed powders as well as towards improved performance. In addition, advanced alloy concepts and fabrication methods for dual alloy disks are being studied as having potential for improving the life of future high performance disks and reducing the amount of strategic materials required in these components.

Trends and Techniques for Space Base Electronics

Simulations of various phosphorus and boron diffusions in SOS were completed and a sputtering system, furnaces, and photolithography related equipment were set up. Double layer metal experiments initially utilized wet chemistry techniques. By incorporating ultrasonic etching of the vias, premetal cleaning a modified buffered HF, phosphorus doped vapox, and extended sintering, yields of 98% were obtained using the standard test pattern. A two dimensional modeling program was written for simulating short channel MOSFETs with nonuniform substrate doping. A key simplifying assumption used is that the majority carriers can be represented by a sheet charge at the silicon dioxide silicon interface. Although the program is incomplete, the two dimensional Poisson equation for the potential distribution was achieved. The status of other Z-D MOSFET simulation programs is summarized.

Trends in unmanned planetary entry systems

Entry systems used in unmanned planetary exploration are discussed in terms of future missions and more complex demands made upon the design configurations of orbiters and atmospheric space probes. The presently on-going Galileo project involving a Jupiter orbiter and a probe of the Jovian atmosphere is mentioned, and the difficult entry requirements at a velocity of 48 km/sec and an angle of minus seven to minus 10 degrees into an atmosphere composed largely of hydrogen, are described. Re-entry parameters determined by the respective entry environment, type of entry approach (hyperbolic or elliptical orbit) entry velocity, and guidance technology are given attention. Aerobraking, involving relatively slow circularization of an initial elliptical orbit by repeated passes through the atmosphere, is investigated. Aerocapture, by which vehicles using controlled flight paths through the atmosphere, can go directly from a hyperbolic flyby trajectory to low circular orbit is described. Major attractions of aerobraking and aerocapture are analyzed in terms of modest technology needs and relatively small impact on spacecraft design.
