Remote Sensing Of The Cryosphere In High Mountain Asia

High Mountain Asia (HMA), often referred to as the "third pole" of the world because its high elevation glaciers, contains the largest amount of fresh water outside the polar ice sheets. The region's hydrology is strongly controlled by variations in the timing and distribution of runoff from snow and glacier melt. Recent improvements in remote sensing technologies and atmospheric / land surface models provides new approaches for assessing the HMA cryosphere. A recently-funded NASA program aims to apply these tools to advance understanding of HMA cryospheric processes. Here we present an overview of planned team activities during the three-year project.

Lifetimes and Occurrence Rates of Dark Vortices on Neptune from 25 Years of Hubble Space Telescope Images

We scoured the full set of blue-wavelength Hubble Space Telescope images of Neptune, finding one additional dark spot in new Hubble data beyond those discovered in 1989, 1994, 1996, and 2015. We report the complete disappearance of the SDS-2015 dark spot, using new Hubble data taken on 2018 September 9–10, as part of the Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) program. Overall, dark spots in the full Hubble data set have lifetimes of at least one to two years, and no more than six years. We modeled a set of dark spots randomly distributed in time over the latitude range on Neptune that is visible from Earth, finding that the cadence of archival Hubble images would have detected about 70% of these spots if their lifetimes are only one year, or about 85%–95% of simulated spots with lifetimes of two or more years. Based on the Hubble data set, we conclude that dark spots have average occurrence rates of one dark spot every four to six years. Many numerical models to date have simulated much shorter vortex lifetimes, so our findings provide constraints that may lead to improved understanding of Neptune’s wind field, stratification, and humidity.

NISAR L-SAR Digital Electronics Subsystem - A Multichannel Distributed Processing System with Synchronous Timing Control for Digital Beam Forming and Multiple Echo Tracking

The NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) L-band SAR instrument employs multiple digital channels to optimize resolution while keeping a large swath on a single pass. High-speed digitization with fine synchronization and digital beam forming are necessary in order to facilitate this new technique called SweepSAR. An architecture employing multiple FPGA based digital signal processors has been conceived to facilitate digital calibration on an individual channel basis as well as digital signal processing to optimize the receive signal. On-board processing and data compression has been implemented to reduce the volume of data in order to satisfy the operational requirements of near global coverage for the desired science targets. A novel command and timing architecture was developed to manage this complex system while providing detailed control of individual channel receive window timing required for digital beam forming. The NISAR L-band Digital Electronics Subsystem is the combination of the hardware, firmware and software components architected and implemented to operate this radar and return the desired quantity and quality of data for the science community.

Degradation of ESR in Polymer Tantalum Capacitors During High Temperature Storage

Replacement of MnO2 cathodes with conductive polymers in chip tantalum capacitors allows for a substantial reduction of the equivalent series resistance (ESR), improvement of frequency characteristics, and elimination of the possibility of ignition during failures. One of the drawbacks of chip polymer tantalum capacitors (CPTCs) is a relatively poor long-term stability at high temperatures. Due to degradation processes in conductive polymer materials, the existing quality assurance testing that has been developed for MnO2 capacitors is not sufficient to guarantee long-term stability of CPTCs. Insertion of CPTCs in hi-rel systems requires development of models that can predict degradation of the parts at operating conditions. In this work, variations of AC characteristics (capacitance, DF and ESR) in different types of capacitors from three manufacturers have been monitored during storage at temperatures from 100ºC to 175ºC for periods of up to 15,000 hours. Results show that the most sensitive to degradation parameter is ESR. Distributions of times to parametric failure during storage have been simulated using a Weibull-Arrhenius model that allowed for assessments of activation energies of degradation and prediction of times to failure at use temperatures. Mechanisms of degradation and the effect of packaging are discussed.

Climatology of Transient Luminous Events and Lightning Observed Above Europe and the Mediterranean Sea

In 1999, the first sprites were observed above European thunderstorms using sensitive cameras. Since then, Eurosprite campaigns have been conducted to observe sprites and other transient luminous events (TLEs), expanding into a network covering large parts of Europe and coastal areas. In 2009 through 2013, the number of optical observations of TLEs reached a peak of 2000 per year. Because of this unprecedented number of European observations, it was possible to construct a climatology of 8394 TLEs observed above 1018 thunderstorm systems and study for the first time their distribution and seasonal cycle above Europe and parts of the Mediterranean Sea. The number of TLEs per thunderstorm was found to follow a power law, with less than 10 TLEs for 801 thunderstorms and up to 195 TLEs above the most prolific one. The majority of TLEs were classified as sprites, 641 elves, 280 halos, 70 upward lightning, 2 blue jets and 1 gigantic jet. The climatology shows intense TLE activity during summer over continental areas and in late autumn over coastal areas and sea. The two seasons peak, respectively, in August and November, separated by March and April with almost no TLEs, and a relative minimum around September. The observed TLE activity, i.e. mostly sprites, is shown to be largely consistent with lightning activity, with a 1/1000 of observed TLE-to-lightning ratio in regions with most observations. The overall behaviour is consistent among individual years, making the observed seasonal cycle a robust general feature of TLE activity above Europe.

YADA: Yet Another Distributed Architecture for Real-Time Robotic Control Systems

This paper presents YADA, a new software architecture for real-time robotic control systems that is minimal, modular, and fully transparent. YADA divides control software into decoupled behavior, user-interface, and hardware-level bus modules. This decoupling at the module level is accomplished by auto-generating human-readable message types that are tailored to the hardware topology oft he current system. These message types provide modules with a common framework for exchanging state information and relaying commands to devices while being agnostic to the communication protocol itself. We also detail how to structure behavior and bus modules to facilitate modularity and flexibility with third party software. YADA has been used with success on several technology development testbeds at JPL, an example of which is given in this paper, and has proven to provide developers a light-weight and highly reconfigurable system for efficient debugging and practical code sharing

Field Evaluation of Portable Soil Water Content Sensors in a Sandy Loam

Ground observations are critical in the validation of soil water content (SWC) estimates from both satellites and land surface models. Portable SWC sensors provide useful information to determine the amount of SWC in the topsoil layer for various applications; however, these probes are not accurate without site‐specific correction. In the present study, we examined and compared six different types of portable electromagnetic (EM) SWC sensors, including multiple sensors made by the same manufacturers, for a total of 16 EM‐based SWC probes equipped with portable data loggers. All SWC probes met the target accuracy after onsite correction—the RMSD was <0.025 m(exp 3) m(exp -3). Using the two‐sample t-tests, we observed that SWC data obtained from similar electrode lengths and from different manufacturers showed similar distributions over time with the same mean. Furthermore, using the maximize R method to combine SWC data from two different types of sensors increased the accuracy of the results. When datasets from two different types of sensors were combined, the Pearson's correlation coefficient (R value) and RMSD values were improved. The average R value improved from .930 to .945, and the RMSD decreased from 0.036 m(exp 3) m(exp -3) to 0.018 m(exp 3) m(exp −3). These results indicate that, along with site‐specific correction, synergetic use of multiple manufacturers’ EM‐based SWC probes can improve the R value and reduce systematic bias.

Large Interferometer for Exoplanets (Life) I. Improved Exoplanet Detection Yield Estimates for A Large Mid-Infrared Space-Interferometer Mission

Context. One of the long-term goals of exoplanet science is the atmospheric characterization of dozens of small exoplanets in order to understand their diversity and search for habitable worlds and potential biosignatures. Achieving this goal requires a space mission of sufficient scale that can spatially separate the signals from exoplanets and their host stars and thus directly scrutinize the exoplanets and their atmospheres. Aims. We seek to quantify the exoplanet detection performance of a space-based mid-infrared (MIR) nulling interferometer that measures the thermal emission of exoplanets. We study the impact of various parameters and compare the performance with that of large single-aperture mission concepts detecting exoplanets in reflected light. Methods. We have developed an instrument simulator that considers all major astrophysical noise sources and coupled it with Monte Carlo of a synthetic exoplanet population around main-sequence stars within 20 pc. This allows us to quantify the number (and types) of exoplanets that our mission concept could detect over a certain time period. Two different scenarios to distribute the observing time among the stellar targets are discussed and different apertures sizes and wavelength ranges are considered. Results. An interferometer consisting of four 2 m apertures working in the 4–18.5 μ.m wavelength range with a total instrument throughput of 5% could detect up to ≈550 exoplanets with radii between 0.5 and 6 R ⊕ with an integrated S/N ≥ 7. At least ≈160 of the detected exoplanets have radii ≤1.5 R ⊕ . Depending on the observing scenario, ≈25–45 rocky exoplanets (objects with radii between 0.5 and 1.5 R ⊕ ) orbiting within the empirical habitable zone (eHZ) of their host stars are among the detections. With four 3.5 m apertures, the total number of detections can increase to up to ≈770, including ≈60–80 rocky eHZ planets. With four times 1 m apertures, the maximum detection yield is ≈315 exoplanets, including ≤20 rocky eHZ planets. The vast majority of small, temperate exoplanets are detected around M dwarfs. The impact of changing the wavelength range to 3–20 μm or 6–17 μm on the detection yield is negligible. Conclusions. A large space-based MIR nulling interferometer will be able to directly detect hundreds of small, nearby exoplanets, tens of which would be habitable world candidates. In terms of predicted detection yield, such a mission can compete with large single-aperture reflected light missions. Given that we assumed only 2.5 years for the search phase, a significant sub-set of the detected exoplanets can be followed-up in a second mission phase to obtain high SNR thermal emission spectra, leveraging the superior diagnostic power of the MIR wavelength regime compared to shorter wavelengths.

Extensive Global Wetland Loss Over the Past Three Centuries

Wetlands have long been drained for human use, thereby strongly affecting greenhouse gas fluxes, flood control, nutrient cycling and biodiversity. Nevertheless, the global extent of natural wetland loss remains remarkably uncertain. Here, we reconstruct the spatial distribution and timing of wetland loss through conversion to seven human land uses between 1700 and 2020, by combining national and subnational records of drainage and conversion with land-use maps and simulated wetland extents. We estimate that 3.4 million km 2 (confidence interval 2.9–3.8) of inland wetlands have been lost since 1700, primarily for conversion to croplands. This net loss of 21% (confidence interval 16–23%) of global wetland area is lower than that suggested previously by extrapolations of data disproportionately from high-loss regions. Wetland loss has been concentrated in Europe, the United States and China, and rapidly expanded during the mid-twentieth century. Our reconstruction elucidates the timing and land-use drivers of global wetland losses, providing an improved historical baseline to guide assessment of wetland loss impact on Earth system processes, conservation planning to protect remaining wetlands and prioritization of sites for wetland restoration.

Evaluation of Elements used for Manufacturing of NanoLam Metallized Polymer Film Capacitors

Metallized polymer film capacitors (MPFC) manufactured by NanoLam technology have a better volumetric efficiency and performance that may exceed the reliability of conventional MPFCs typically used in power and high voltage systems that require high insulation resistance and low power losses. These capacitors can be also an effective replacement for electrolytic and stacked ceramic capacitors currently used in space applications looking to save significant volume and mass. This report evaluates the effects of environmental conditions including radiation and storage at room and high temperatures on the characteristics of NanoLam elements used in the production of MPFCs. Assessments of the reliability acceleration factors and predictions for the useful life are made based on highly accelerated life tests (HALT) using distributions of times to parametric failures at different stress conditions. It has been shown that even a relatively small amount of moisture absorbed at room environments in the dielectric layers may substantially change the probability of failure. In the presence of moisture, degradation processes that started after voltage application continue with time during storage.

Have Heat Waves Become More Intense and Frequent in North America in the Past 40 Years?

Extreme events, especially heat waves, have seemingly become more frequent and intense in the past decades worldwide, likely associated with global warming. This study uses the extreme detection indices product derived from the NASA Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications version 2 (MERRA-2) data to address whether heat waves have become more intense and frequent in North America in the past 40 years. We also examine in-depth the recent heat wave in June 2023 in Canada and the associated drought and wildfire events and compare them with previous years. We use additional data products in this study for cross-validation, including surface temperature from Phase 2 of the North American Land Data Assimilation System (NLDAS 2.0) and Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) version 7, with a shorter data latency, only a few days. In addition, we will demonstrate how to efficiently conduct long-term time-series data analysis, which involves a large volume of data, using data services developed at NASA GES DISC, such as Giovanni, datarod, and Thematic Real-time Environmental Distributed Data Services (THREDDS) Data Server (TDS). These services can be used to visualize and explore extreme events, and to download only the data that is of interest.

A Lyapunov-Based Generalized Dc-Side Controller Design for PV-Connected Systems: Preprint

The objective of this paper is to realize a universal dc-side controller for photovoltaic (PV) systems where the control is agnostic to the downstream converter configuration. To achieve this, the downstream power converter and its controls are manipulated into an effective power control loop that is then cast into a generalized multi-loop design framework. On the dc side, a nonlinear small-signal model of the PV input is realized exclusively in terms of PV datasheet parameters (i.e., open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, and maximum power point). Finally, a linear controller is used to modulate the dc-side PV system with the generic downstream power controller. A Lyapunov candidate is proposed to analyze the stability of the interconnected system and provide a streamlined approach for the controller design. The proposed design is validated on a 1-kVA experimental setup that interfaces a PV module to the grid.

OECD/NEA MPCMIV Benchmark - Preliminary fuel performance results

The on-going OECD/NEA Multi-physics Pellet Cladding Mechanical Interaction Validation (MPCMIV) benchmark aims to provide guidance on multi-physics validation through the modelling of two cold ramps. In this paper, the first results for the base irradiation of the father rod and fuel rodlet (refabricated from the father rod), and the first cold ramp are presented. The base irradiation consists of 3 years of irradiation in the Forsmark-2 reactor. The cold ramp encompasses a steady-state pre-ramp period of less than one hour at a low constant linear heat rate (LHR) followed by a ramp test (< 1 min) with a much higher maximal LHR. The base irradiation is modelled using the fuel performance codes FRAPCON and FAST, while the cold ramp modeling is using the fuel performance code FRAPTRAN. Several missing parameters for FRAPCON/FAST base irradiation models have been selected using multiple references such as the OECD/NEA light water reactor Uncertainty Analysis in Modelling (UAM) benchmark specifications and the FRAPCON Integral Assessment report. The obtained results for the base irradiation such as the cladding outer diameter show reasonable agreement with the experimental measurements. The results for the cold ramp show larger differences with the experimental measurements (e.g., cladding axial elongation). However, such differences have been observed as well in other studies involving pellet cladding mechanical interaction analyses and are attributed to the fuel performance modelling assumptions and to the tuned modelling parameters that were not covered by the specifications. Uncertainty and sensitivity analysis might allow a better quantification of these missing parameters. (authors)

Distributed execution of recovery blocks - An approach for uniform treatment of hardware and software faults in real-time applications

The concept of distributed execution of recovery blocks is examined as an approach for uniform treatment of hardware and software faults. A useful characteristic of the approach is the relatively small time cost it requires. The approach is thus suitable for incorporation into real-time computer systems. A specific formulation of the approach that is aimed at minimizing the recovery time is presented, called the distributed recovery block (DRB) scheme. The DRB scheme is capable of effecting forward recovery while handling both hardware and software faults in a uniform manner. An approach to incorporating the capability for multiprocessing scheme is also discussed. Two experiments aimed at testing the execution efficiency of the scheme in real-time applications have been conducted on two different multimicrocomputer networks. The results clearly indicate the feasibility of achieving tolerance of hardware and software faults in a broad range of real-time computer systems by use of the schemes for distributed execution of recovery blocks.

Robust and resilient coordination of feeders with uncertain distributed energy resources: from real-time control to long-term planning

To enable flexible demand and ensure reliable and economical operation of distribution systems, we present a novel hierarchical scheme that actively coordinates responsive behind-the-meter grid resources, including distributed energy resources (DERs), to reliably manage each unbalanced distribution feeder and exploits the available flexibility to economically optimize the entire network. Each layer of the scheme employs advanced optimization methods at different timescales to ensure that the system operates within both grid and device limits. The hierarchy is validated in a large-scale realistic simulation based on data from the industry. Simulation results show that coordination of flexibility improves both system reliability and economics, and enables greater penetration of solar PV. Discussion is also provided on the practical viability of the required communications and controls to implement the presented scheme within a large DSO.

The H + OCS hot atom reaction - CO state distributions and translational energy from time-resolved infrared absorption spectroscopy

Time-resolved infrared diode laser spectroscopy has been used to probe CO internal and translational excitation from the reaction of hot H atoms with OCS. Product distributions should be strongly biased toward the maximum 1.4 eV collision energy obtained from 278 nm pulsed photolysis of HI. Rotations and vibrations are both colder than predicted by statistical density of states theory, as evidenced by large positive surprisal parameters. The bias against rotation is stronger than that against vibration, with measurable population as high as v = 4. The average CO internal excitation is 1920/cm, accounting for only 13 percent of the available energy. Of the energy balance, time-resolved sub-Doppler line shape measurements show that more than 38 percent appears as relative translation of the separating CO and SH fragments. Studies of the relaxation kinetics indicate that some rotational energy transfer occurs on the time scale of our measurements, but the distributions do not relax sufficiently to alter our conclusions. Vibrational distributions are nascent, though vibrational relaxation of excited CO is unusually fast in the OCS bath, with rates approaching 3 percent of gas kinetic for v = 1.
