Monitoring dynamic loads on wind tunnel force balances

Two devices have been developed at NASA Langley to monitor the dynamic loads incurred during wind-tunnel testing. The Balance Dynamic Display Unit (BDDU), displays and monitors the combined static and dynamic forces and moments in the orthogonal axes. The Balance Critical Point Analyzer scales and sums each normalized signal from the BDDU to obtain combined dynamic and static signals that represent the dynamic loads at predefined high-stress points. The display of each instrument is a multiplex of six analog signals in a way that each channel is displayed sequentially as one-sixth of the horizontal axis on a single oscilloscope trace. Thus this display format permits the operator to quickly and easily monitor the combined static and dynamic level of up to six channels at the same time.

Distributed integrated instrumentation and control system

The operation and capabilities of a new integrated instrumentation and control system are described. The system will, under one main program, both acquire data from a conducted test and automatically control the test sequence. The system layout has a multiplexer front end and control-function electronics at the test area, while the system control computer, recording devices, and monitors are located remotely. The system's data, control, and communication signals are transmitted via fiber-optic lines. Diagrams are presented illustrating the control and data displays.

On modeling of integrated communication and control systems

The mathematical modeling scheme proposed by Ray and Halevi (1988) for integrated communication and control systems is considered analytically, with an emphasis on the effect of introducing varying and distributed time delays to account for asynchronous time-division multiplexing in the communication part of the system. Ray and Halevi applied a state-transition concept to transform the original continuous-time model into a discrete-time model; the same approach was used by Kalman and Bertram (1959) to model various types of sampled data systems which are not subject to induced delays. The relationship between the two modeling schemes is explored, and it is shown that, although the Kalman-Bertram method has the advantage of a unified approach, it becomes inconvenient when varying delays appear in the control loop.

Single-frequency diode-pumped lasers for free-space optical communication

Recent advances in laser technology for intersatellite optical communication systems are reviewed and illustrated with graphs and diagrams. Topics addressed include (1) single-frequency diode-pumped Nd:YAG lasers of monolithic ring configuration (yielding 368-384 mW output power with 1-W pumping), (2) injection chaining of up to 10 monolithic resonators to achieve redundancy and/or higher output power, (3) 2-kHz-linewidth 5-mW versions of (1) which are tunable over a 30-MHz range for use as local oscillators in coherent communication, (4) resonant external modulation and doubling or resonant phase modulation of diode-pumped lasers, and (5) wavelength multiplexing.

Digital array scanned interferometers for astronomy

Investigations are reported of digital array scanned interferometers (DASI) with silicon CCD array detectors to define the operational capabilities of a mapping (polarimetric) spectrometer for astronomical applications based on these instruments. For spectral mapping, spatially resolved spectra using a cylindrical lens to image in the interferometers's redundant coordinate are given. The signal-to-noise characteristics of the Fourier transformed data are demonstrated with regard to the effects of a rectangular sampling function, spectral multiplexing and the pixel-to-pixel variation of the CCD array. These data indicate that DASIs can offer simple, versatile (polarization) mapping spectrometers suitable for spectral mapping observations from the ultraviolet to the infrared of extended sources at variable spatial resolution, particularly where long term stable operation is essential, as for spacecraft instruments.

SAPT units turn-on in an interference-dominant environment

A stand alone pressure transducer (SAPT) is a credit-card-sized smart pressure sensor inserted between the tile and the aluminum skin of a space shuttle. Reliably initiating the SAPT units via RF signals in a prelaunch environment is a challenging problem. Multiple-source interference may exist if more than one GSE (ground support equipment) antenna is turned on at the same time to meet the simultaneity requirement of 10 ms. A polygon model for orbiter, external tank, solid rocket booster, and tail service masts is used to simulate the prelaunch environment. Geometric optics is then applied to identify the coverage areas and the areas which are vulnerable to multipath and/or multiple-source interference. Simulation results show that the underside areas of an orbiter have incidence angles exceeding 80 deg. For multipath interference, both sides of the cargo bay areas are found to be vulnerable to a worst-case multipath loss exceeding 20 dB. Multiple-source interference areas are also identified. Mitigation methods for the coverage and interference problem are described. It is shown that multiple-source interference can be eliminated (or controlled) using the time-division-multiplexing method or the time-stamp approach.

Performance of a 300 Mbps 1:16 serial/parallel optoelectronic receiver module

Optical interconnects are being considered for the high speed distribution of multiplexed control signals in GaAs MMIC-based phased array antennas. This paper describes the performance of a hybrid GaAs optoelectronic integrated circuit (OEIC), along with a description of its design and fabrication. The OEIC converts a 16-bit serial optical input to a 16 parallel line electrical output using an on-board 1:16 demultiplexer and operates at data rates as high as 305 Mbps. The performance characteristics as well as potential applications of the device are presented.

Spatial heterodyne spectroscopy - Interferometric performance at any wavelength without scanning

Spatial heterodyne spectroscopy (SHS) employing a two-beam dispersive interferometer producing a Fizeau fringe pattern having wavelength-dependent spatial frequencies is presented. The pattern is recorded on an imaging detector and Fourier transformed to recover the input stream. It is pointed out that spectrometers operating on the SHS principle can achieve the theoretical resolution limit of the gratings without scanning, retaining at the same time the large angular input tolerance and multiplexing properties of conventional scanning Fourier-transform spectrometers. Additionally, broad spectral coverages can be achieved, and field widening can be accomplished without moving parts.

Gas chromatographic concepts for the analysis of planetary atmospheres

Over the last few years, new gas chromatographic (GC) concepts were developed for use on board spacecraft or any other restricted environments for determining the chemical composition of the atmosphere and surface material of various planetary bodies. Future NASA Missions include an entry probe that will be sent to Titan and various spacecraft that will land on Mars. In order to be able to properly respond to the mission science requirements and physical restrictions imposed on the instruments by these missions, GC analytical techniques are being developed. Some of these techniques include hardware and mathematical techniques that will improve GC sensitivity and increase the sampling rate of a GC descending through a planetary atmosphere. The technique of Multiplex Gas Chromatography (MGC) is an example of a technique that was studied in a simulated Titan atmosphere. In such an environment, the atmospheric pressure at instrument deployment is estimated to be a few torr. Thus, at such pressures, the small amount of sample that is acquired might not be enough to satisfy the detection requirements of the gas chromatograph. In MGC, many samples are pseudo-randomly introduced to the chromatograph without regard to elution of preceding components. The resulting data is then reduced using mathematical techniques such as cross-correlation of Fourier Transforms. Advantages realized from this technique include: improvement in detection limits of several orders of magnitude and increase in the number of analyses that can be conducted in a given period of time. Results proving the application of MGC at very low pressures emulating the same atmospheric pressures that a Titan Probe will encounter when the instruments are deployed are presented. The sample used contained hydrocarbons that are expected to be found in Titan's atmosphere. In addition, a new selective modulator was developed to monitor water under Martian atmospheric conditions. Since this modulator is selective only to water, the need for a GC column is eliminated. This results in further simplification of the instrument.

Multi-rate demodulator architecture

A unique digital multi-rate demodulator (MRD) architecture is presented for onboard satellite communications processing. The multi-rate feature enables the same demodulator hardware to process either one wideband channel (WBC), or process up to thirty-two independent narrowband channels (NBC) that are time division multiplexed (TDM). The MRD can process many quadrature modulation format such as offset quadrature phase shift keying (OQPSK). Possible applications include voice and data transmission for commercial or military users.
