Dynamic fatigue of a machinable glass-ceramic

To assess the stress corrosion susceptibility of a machinable glass-ceramic, its dynamic fatigue behavior was investigated by measuring its strength as a function of stress rate. Fracture mechanics techniques were used to analyse the results for the purpose of making lifetime predictions for components of this material. This material was concluded to have only moderate resistance to stress in ambient conditions. The effects of specimen size on strength were assessed for the material used in this study: it was concluded that the Weibull edge-flaw scaling law adequately describes the observed strength-size relationship.

Documentation for the machine-readable version of the catalogue of individual UBV and UVBY beta observations in the region of the Orion OB1 association

The machine-readable files of individual UBV observations of 106 stars in the vicinity of the Orion Nebula (the Sword region) and individual uvby beta observations of 508 stars in all regions of the Orion OB 1 association are described. For the UBV data the stars are identified by their Brun numbers, with cross identifications to the chart numbers used in Warren and Hesser; the uv by beta stars are identified by the aforementioned chart numbers and HD, BD or P ( = pi); numbers in that order of preference.

Documentation for the machine-readable version of the Bright Star Catalogue

The machine-readable version of The Bright Star Catalogue, 4th edition, is described. In addition to the large number of newly determined fundamental data, such as photoelectric magnitudes, MK spectral types, parallaxes, and radial velocities, the new version contains data and information not included in the third edition such as the identification of IR sources, U-B and R-I colors, radial velocity comments (indication and identification of spectroscopic and occultation binaries), and projected rotational velocities. The equatorial coordinates for equinoxes 1900 and 2000 are recorded to greater precision details concerning variability, spectral characteristics, duplicity, and group membership are included. Data compiled through 1979, some information and variable-star designations found through 1981 are considered.

Documentation for the machine-readable version of the general catalogue of trigonometric stellar parallaxes and supplement

The machine-readable version of the General Catalog of Trigonometric Stellar parallaxes as distributed by the Astronomical Data Center is described. It is intended to enable users to read and process the data without problems and guesswork. The source reference should be consulted for details concerning the compilation of the main catalogue and supplement, the probable errors, and the weighting system used to combine determinations from different observatories.

Crystal cleaving machine

A machine is disclosed for cleaving hard crystals. A typical example of which is lithium fluoride, with prcision and uniformity and includes vertical axis positioning control means for an adjustable spring tension guided hammer mechanism employed to strike an anvil. A crystal cleaving shock wave transmitted to a cleaving blade is generated having an angulated cleaving edge in contact with one corner of the crystal. Connection between the anvil and the blade is by means of a pair of vertical shafts held in substantially friction free engagement by two pairs of adjustable linear bearings. An underlying crystal holding fixture with horizontal position control means includes a zero reference stop face for the crystal and opposing spring-loaded clamping and vertical positioning elements which are precisely guided.

Hard permanent magnet development trends and their application to A.C. machines

The physical and magnetic properties of Mn-Al-C, Fe-Cr-Co, and RE-TM (rare earth-transition metal intermetallics) in polymer and soft metal bonded or sintered form are considered for ac circuit machine usage. The manufacturing processes for the magnetic materials are reviewed, and the mechanical and electrical properties of the magnetic materials are compared, with consideration given to the reference Alnico magnet. The Mn-Al-C magnets have the same magnetic properties and costs as Alnico units, operate well at low temperatures, but have poor high temperature performance. Fe-Cr-Co magnets also have comparable cost to Alnico magnets, and operate at high or low temperature, but are brittle, expensive, and contain Co. RE-Co magnets possess a high energy density, operate well in a wide temperature range, and are expensive. Recommendation for exploring the rare-earth alternatives are offered.

A systematic approach to the application of Automation, Robotics, and Machine Intelligence Systems /ARAMIS/ to future space projects

The potential applications of Automation, Robotics, and Machine Intelligence Systems (ARAMIS) to space projects are investigated, through a systematic method. In this method selected space projects are broken down into space project tasks, and 69 of these tasks are selected for study. Candidate ARAMIS options are defined for each task. The relative merits of these options are evaluated according to seven indices of performance. Logical sequences of ARAMIS development are also defined. Based on this data, promising applications of ARAMIS are

Shock Mounting for Heavy Machines

Elastomeric bearings eliminate extraneous forces. Rocket thrust transmitted from motor to load cells via support that absorbs extraneous forces so they do not affect accuracy of thrust measurements. Adapter spoked cone fits over forward end of rocket motor. Shock mounting developed for rocket engines under test used as support for heavy machines, bridges, or towers.

Electroformed Electrodes for Electrical-Discharge Machining

Copper electrodes replace graphite electrodes in many instances of electrical-discharge machining (EDM) of complex shapes. Copper electrodes wear longer and cause less contamination of EDM dielectric fluid than do graphite electrodes.

Space applications of Automation, Robotics and Machine Intelligence Systems (ARAMIS). Volume 2: Space projects overview

Applications of automation, robotics, and machine intelligence systems (ARAMIS) to space activities, and their related ground support functions are studied so that informed decisions can be made on which aspects of ARAMIS to develop. The space project breakdowns, which are used to identify tasks ('functional elements'), are described. The study method concentrates on the production of a matrix relating space project tasks to pieces of ARAMIS.

Documentation for the machine-readable version of the Catalogue of Nearby Stars, edition 1969

The Catalogue of Nearby Stars, Edition 1969 (Gliese 1969) contains a number of modifications and additions to the 1957 catalog. It should be mentioned that the 1969 edition lists: (1) all 915 stars of the first edition, even though newer parallaxes place some of the stars below the catalog limit; (2) almost all known stars having trigonometric parallaxes or = 0.045 deg, although in some cases the mean values of trigonometric and spectral or photometric parallaxes are or = 0.045 deg. Pleiades stars and the carbon star X Cnc have been omitted; and (3) all stars with mean (resulting) parallaxes or = 0.045 deg. The resulting catalog contains 1529 single stars and systems with a total of 1890 components (not including spectroscopic and astrometric companions). The machine-readable version of the catalog is described. It is intended to enable users to read and process the data without problems or guesswork.
