Reduction of the Dirichlet problem to an initial value problem.

Although the derivation is concerned with solutions for plane regions with prescribed boundary values, the approach presented could by easily generalized to higher dimensions. The initial-value method is derived by a combination of invariant imbedding techniques and the Fredholm integral equation method of representation of the potential as a function of a dilayer distribution on the boundary of the region in question.

Effect of initial hydrogen content of a titanium alloy on susceptibility to hot salt stress corrosion.

The influence of the initial hydrogen content of a titanium alloy on subsequent resistance to hot salt stress corrosion embrittlement and cracking was investigated. A Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V alloy was tested in four conditions: mill annealed (70 ppm H), duplex annealed (70 ppm H), vacuum annealed to an intermediate (36 ppm H) and a low (9 ppm H) hydrogen level. Material annealed at 650 C (duplex condition) exhibited resistance to hot salt stress corrosion superior to that exhibited by material in the mill annealed condition. Reduction of the alloy hydrogen content from 70 to as low as 9 ppm did not influence resistance to hot salt stress corrosion embrittlement or cracking.

U-Th-Pb systematics in three Apollo 14 basalts and the problem of initial Pb in lunar rocks.

The isotopic composition of Pb and the elemental concentration of U, Th and Pb were measured on 'total' rock samples 14053, 14073 and 14310 and on mineral separates of 14310 and 14053. These are the first Pb-U isochrons obtained for lunar basalts and indicate a reasonable solution to the previous discrepancy between the different methods of 'absolute' age determination. The resulting U-Pb isochron ages are compatible with the Rb-Sr and K-Ar ages on the same rocks. However, it is not possible to establish a precise time of 'crystallization' from the Pb-U data because of the small angle of intersection between the linear arrays and the concordia curve. These data show that total rock model ages do not in general yield crystallization ages. The data on 14310 and 14053 show that these rocks were formed containing a highly radiogenic initial lead which accounts for the excessively high total rock model ages by the U-Th-Pb method. The data prove that at the time of extrusion of some basalts, unsupported lead with extremely high Pb-207/Pb-206 ratios was added to the lunar surface.

Recirculation patterns in the initial region of coaxial jets.

This experimental study is concerned with the mixing in the initial region of turbulent coaxial streams. The investigation is limited to the low-speed incompressible case with the inner stream of lower velocity than the outer stream. Velocity ratios ranged from infinity to one. The inner to outer stream density ratio was either 4 or 1. Experimental measurements were made with a hot-wire anemometer system, static pressure probes, and shadowgraphy. The data show that a backflow region is formed in this particular apparatus at outer to inner stream velocity ratio of 13 for the homogeneous case and at outer to inner stream velocity ratio of 26 for the heterogeneous case. For higher velocity ratio, a circulating toroidal vortex is established which enhances mixing between the inner and outer streams. This vortex pattern exhibits similarity of velocity with velocity ratio variations.

High latitude proton precipitation and light-ion density profiles during the magnetic storm initial phase

Measurements of precipitating protons and light ion densities by experiments on OGO-4 indicate that widespread proton precipitation occurs in predawn hours during the magnetic storm initial phase from the latitude of the high-latitude ion trough, or plasmapause , up to Lambda 75 deg. A softening of the proton spectrum is apparent as the plasmapause is approached. The separation of the low-latitude precipitation boundaries for 7.3 kev and 23.8 kev protons is approximately 1 deg, compared with a 3.6 deg separation which has been computed using the formulas of Gendrin and Eather and Carovillano. Consideration of probable proton drift morphology leads to the conclusion that protons ase injected in predawn hours, with widespread precipitation occurring in the region outside the plasmapause. Protons less energetic than approximately 7 kev drift eastward, while the more energetic protons drift westward, producing the observed dawn-dusk asymmetry for the lower-energy protons.

Precision closed bomb calorimeter for testing flame and gas producing initiators

A calorimeter has been developed under this study to help meet the needs of accurate performance monitoring of electrically or mechanically actuated flame and gas producing devices, such as squib-type initiators. A ten cubic centimeter closed bomb (closed volume) calorimeter was designed to provide a standard pressure trace and to measure a nominal 50 calorie output, using the basic components of a Parr Model 1411 calorimeter. Two prototype bombs were fabricated, pressure tested to 2600 psi, and extensively evaluated.

Initial development of the June 1971 South Equatorial Belt disturbance on Jupiter.

Photographs taken with the Catalina 61-inch reflector from June 21 through July 10, 1971 have enabled the author to study and measure the early developments of a major South Equatorial Belt (SEB) disturbance. High-resolution photographs of the disturbance were obtained on seven nights during the 19-day interval. Our first photograph at 04:38 UT on June 21 recorded the initial outbreak at 79.5 deg longitude (System II), and -14 deg zenographic latitude. From this point, dark spots moved along the SEBs towards increasing longitude, and white spots a short distance along the SEBn towards decreasing longitude.

High-latitude proton precipitation and light ion density profiles during the magnetic storm initial phase.

Measurements of precipitating protons and light ion densities by experiments on Ogo 4 indicate that widespread proton precipitation occurs in predawn hours during the magnetic storm initial phase from the latitude of the high-latitude ion trough, or plasmapause, up to latitudes greater than 75 deg. A softening of the proton spectrum is apparent as the plasmapause is approached. The separation of the low-latitude precipitation boundaries for 7.3-keV and 23.8-keV protons is less than about 1 deg, compared with a 3.6-deg separation that has been computed by using the formulas of Gendrin and Eather and Carovillano. Consideration of probable proton drift morphology leads to the conclusion that protons are injected in predawn hours, widespread precipitation occurring in the region outside the plasmapause. Protons less energetic than 7 keV drift eastward, whereas the more energetic protons drift westward, producing the observed dawn-dusk asymmetry for the lower-energy protons.

A review of initial investigations to utilize ERTS-1 data in determining the availability and distribution of living marine resources

This study was initiated in July 1972 to determine the reliability of satellite and high altitude sensors to provide data about oceanographic parameters in coastal waters; demonstrate the use of remotely sensed oceanographic information to predict the distribution and abundance of adult menhaden; and, demonstrate the potential of using satellite acquired information for improving the harvest and management of a fishery resource. The study focused on coastal are as in the north central portion of the Gulf of Mexico including parts of Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. The area used in the final analysis was limited to the Mississippi Sound, which is approximately 145 kilometers (90 miles) long and 16 kilometers (10 miles) wide, has an average water depth of about 3.7 meters (12 feet), and in general characterizes an estuarine environment.

Evaluation of an artificial estuarine habitat-initial stage

In order to study the influence of an artificial habitat of discarded automobile tires upon the biomass in and around it, three sites were selected in the Banana River of which two will contain small groups of tires and one will not. Over a given period, the populations in and around the tires will be compared with those which existed initially or prevail on the natural site. Preliminary observations indicate that adequate numbers may be present in the lower trophic levels but that there are perhaps inadequate populations of upper level carnivores which it appears can be increased by an artificial habitat.

Least squares adjustment with relatively large observation errors, inaccurate initial approximations, or both

Least squares adjustment problems are considered in which the condition equations are nonlinear in both the observations and the adjustment parameters ('unknowns'). A solution algorithm is presented which takes into account the second (as well as the first) order derivatives in the adjustment residuals (observation errors) and the corrections to the initially available approximations to the adjustment parameters. The inclusion of second-order terms in the adjustment residuals is necessary whenever the adjustment residuals themselves cannot be regarded as negligible as compared to the adjustment parameters, i.e., whenever the linearized condition equations would no longer be practically equivalent to the rigorous ones. The consideration of second-order terms in the parameter corrections is completely independent of the second-order terms in the adjustment residuals.

Hot hydrogen atoms - Initiators of reactions of interest in interstellar chemistry and evolution

Hot hydrogen atoms possess kinetic (or translational) energy in excess of that to be expected if the atoms were in thermal equilibrium with the surroundings. In the investigation reported the hot hydrogen atoms were generated by the photolysis of donor molecules. The light sources for the photolysis were 1000-watt xenon or 500-watt mercury lamps combined with a filter system. The experiments show that hot hydrogen atoms can initiate reactions among simple molecules to produce biomolecules of significance.

Generalized Du Fort-Frankel methods for parabolic initial boundary value problems

The Du Fort-Frankel difference scheme is generalized to difference operators of arbitrary high order accuracy in space and to arbitrary order of the parabolic differential operator. Spectral methods can also be used to approximate the spatial part of the differential operator. The scheme is explicit, and it is unconditionally stable for the initial value problem. Stable boundary conditions are given for two different fourth order accurate space approximations.

Initial comparisons of solar collector performance data obtained out-of doors and with a solar simulator

A facility was constructed to evaluate solar collector performance outdoors for conditions that would be encountered by collectors if they were incorporated in a solar heating/cooling system. In addition to obtaining initial collector performance data, the outdoor facility will enable collector durability and degradation rates to be evaluated for operating periods of several months. The data obtained from the outdoor tests were compared to collector performance predicted on the basis of results obtained with a solar simulator. The performance measured outdoors was less than the predicted performance.

Initial observations of plasma electrons from the Pioneer 10 flyby of Jupiter

Initial results are presented from the electron measurements made by the Ames Research Center Plasma Analyzer during the inbound passage of Pioneer 10 in the vicinity of Jupiter. The observations indicate that as in the case of the earth's magnetosheath, there is an increase in electron temperature across the Jovian bow shock. During the second extended magnetosheath traversal (approximately 54 to 46.5 Jupiter radii) the electron temperatures were generally higher than those observed during the first magnetosheath traversal (109 to 96 Jupiter radii). These higher electron temperatures are in agreement with the measured higher magnitude of the magnetic field and ion density during this traversal. These observations are consistent with the contraction of the Jovian magnetosphere due to an increase in the solar wind dynamic pressure.
