Magnetic Microcalorimeter Gamma Detectors with Ultra-High Energy Resolution. Final Report

The goal of this project was to build a commercially viable metallic microcalorimeter (MMC) g-spectrometer with an ultra-high energy resolution <50 eV for accurate non-destructive assay (NDA) of nuclear materials. Improved NDA simplifies and accelerates safeguards analyses in the nuclear fuel cycle and enhances capabilities to detect the diversion of nuclear materials for illicit purposes. High-resolution MMC g-spectrometers can also improve the accuracy of nuclear data that NDA is based on.

Introduction to InterSpec for Gamma-Ray Analysis [Slides]

InterSpec is a spectrum viewing and analysis tool that can be used for nuclide identification and quantification. Developed at Sandia National Laboratories, it is open source and can be obtained at: https://github.com/sandialabs/interspec/releases. These slides do not cover nuclide quantification and only touch on nuclide identification (ID).

Radiobiological Studies Using Cs-137 Gamma or 320 kV X Rays

There are numerous self-shielded research irradiators used in various facilities throughout the United States. The irradiators employ radioactive sources containing either 137 Cs or 60 Co and the irradiators are used for a variety of radiobiological investigations involving cellular and/or animal models. A report from the National Academy of Sciences described security issues associated with particular radiation sources and the desire for their replacement with suitable X-ray irradiators. One possible replacement would be a 320 kV X-ray irradiator. The participants in this research successfully performed in vivo radiobiological studies involving mice exposed to filtered (HVL ≈ 4 mm Cu) 320 kV X rays. Two publications (one published and one submitted at the publishing of this report) documenting key findings are provided in Appendices A and B of this report. The 320 kV X rays were found suitable for in vivo (in mice) cell survival studies and are expected to be suitable for bone marrow transplantation studies using mice but this needs to be experimentally validated.

First-principles Studies of Tritium Reactivity and Diffusivity on Defective and Carbon Doped Surfaces of $\gamma$-LiAlO 2 Pellets (Tritium Science Program Report FY 2019 )

In tritium-producing burnable absorber rods (TPBARs), tritium ($^{3}_{1}$H,T) is produced in 6 Li isotope enriched γ-LiAlO 2 ceramic pellet. However, a better understanding of $^{3}_{1}$H transport through the pellets, getters and the barrier/cladding system is hampered by a lack of fundamental data about the $^{3}_{1}$H solubility and diffusivity. In the process of $^{3}_{1}$H diffusion from bulk γ-LiAlO 2 to its surface, it is possible that $^{3}_{1}$H atoms bind with surface atoms or become trapped at vacancies sites. By increasing the number of $^{3}_{1}$H diffused from bulk to surface, upon recombination and desorption from surface sites, they will escape from the γ-LiAlO 2 surface to form different $^{3}_{1}$H species (possibly being as T, T 2 , T 2 O, OT, or CT x (x=1-4, with C impurity present at a 100-600 ppm level in pellets) that need to be identified and can become captured by the getter. Therefore, exploring the $^{3}_{1}$H diffusion from bulk to surface, corroborated with surface adsorption, diffusion and recombination and followed by desorption from surface as various types of $^{3}_{1}$H species becomes a very important task as an integral part of the study of $^{3}_{1}$H solubility and diffusivity in the pellets.

Minimum Resolution Requirements for Gamma Identification Algorithms

Each year there are millions of dollars spent on the research and production of high-resolution detectors. This research indicates that the pursuit of higher resolution detectors is not always necessary. The terminal resolution of a NaI detector, or highest detector resolution, at which identification algorithms fail to identify highly enriched uranium (HEU) was evaluated using GADRAS, Genie, and GammaVision. GADRAS employs a template matching algorithm, while Genie and GammaVision utilize a mathematical approach for peak search and identification. The NaI spectra utilized for evaluation were generated using the GADRAS Inject tab and source modeling functions. Each spectrum included terrestrial and cosmic background from Dallas, TX. The resolutions for each spectrum were increased from a default 8.92% to a point where each algorithm would fail to identify 235 U from a HEU source. Six different source configurations were used in this research: bare HEU, 50% shielded HEU, 90% shielded HEU, bare HEU with an interference source of 99 mTc, bare HEU with 99 mTc both shielded 50%, and bare HEU with 99 mTc both shielded 90%. Magnetic Microcalorimeter Gamma Detectors with Ultra-High Energy Resolution (FY2021 Q2 Report)

For a follow-up project, we are currently funded by NA-241 to build a decay energy spectrometer based on the MMC technology developed in this LCP. The IAEA is specifically interested in accurate isotope analysis of small particles that decay energy (Q) spectroscopy is well-suited for. We have established an SP-1 collaboration with the IAEA that is expected to continue beyond FY20.

Exploring Gamma-Ray and Neutron Spectroscopy Missions to Mars Caves [Slides]

In this work, we investigate the sensitivity of active neutron detector systems in Mars caves using MCNP6 to model neutron transport in different cave geometries, compositions, and detectors to determine if active neutron measurements can be used to identify the hydration of cave walls vs floor vs ceilings, and to perform a concept study for potential future Mars cave missions in search of hydration and habitable regions.
