Optical properties and photoexcitation of a novel liquid form of soluble polyacetylene

Optical absorption, fluorescence emission, Raman scattering, and time-resolved emission experiments are reported on a new liquid form of soluble polyacetylene. This liquid consists of separate polyene chains, grown on activated sites of a polybutadiene chain. The depolarization ratios as well as the time-resolved spectrum of the secondary emission were measured. The relevant spectral features are discussed and analyzed in terms of the lack of interchain interactions which characterize the polymer in solution.

A study of the relationship among wind speed, sea state, and the drag coefficient for a developing wave field

Controlled laboratory experiments are reported which demonstrate directly and quantitatively the influence of wave conditions in determining the drag law at the air-sea interface under neutral stability conditions. It is concluded that the analytic form first proposed by Kitaigorodskii (1970) models the roughness scale very well when the sea is dominated by the locally generated waves. It is demonstrated that, by using a unified two-parameter wave spectral model by Huang et al. (1981), Kitaigorodskii's result can be shown to contain the formulas of Charnock (1955) and Hsu (1974) as special cases. The results also identify two wind and wave-related parameters as important in determining the drag coefficient for developing wave fields.

Transparent Analogs for Alloy Phase Studies

Report describes experiments to add information to data base supporting use of transparent, partially miscible liquids and solids as analogs in studies of alloy solidification. Behavior of these materials observed directly while they undergo liquid/liquid and liquid/solid phase transformations. Light-scattering techniques used to determine phase boundaries. Transparent analogs allow observation of both solidification patterns and processes leading to those patterns, whereas metal alloys require tedious post-solidification metallographic analyses because processes not generally observed. Experiments with transparent substances safer and cheaper since conducted at much lower temperatures.

Elastomers Compatible With High-Pressure Oxygen

Compatibility increased by fluorination. Report describes experiments aimed at improving compatibility of some fluorinated elastomers with high-pressure oxygen. Such elastomers needed for seals, gaskets, and positive-expulsion devices used with high-pressure oxygen. Oxygen - compatibility tests carried out on five elastomers chosen on the basis of literature survey.

Growth of Metastable Peritectic Alloys

Effects of directional solidification on microstructural, compositional, and magnetic properties studied. Two reports describe experiments to determine effects of directional solidification on peritectic alloys. Of particular interest were effects of gravitationally driven convection.

Effects of Low Gravity on Superalloy Solidification

Report describes experiments on directional solidification on MAR-M246(Hf) superalloy in low gravity. Determines effects of reduction in gravity on growth of dendrites and on resultant interdendritic segregation of various constituents, particularly of additive hafnium. Interdendritic spacings and carbide contents increase.

Solidifying Mn/Bi in a Magnetic Field

Report describes experiments in directional solidification of eutectic Mn/Bi in magnetic field. Study determines whether effects of gravitationally-induced convection reduced or eliminated by magnetic field. Morphological, thermal, and magnetic analyses done on samples grown at various speeds and various applied strengths. Magnetic effects similar to those of low gravity.

Filament formation due to photospheric shear

Recently, Wu et al. (1983, 1986) developed a three-dimensional, time-dependent axisymmetric ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model which has been used to study lower solar atmospheric response due to photospheric motion. They have shown that various observed solar features can be formed from these numerical simulation experiments. Some work currently in progress which has resulted from a specific numerical simulation experiment is reported. These results may elucidate the possible physical mechanism of formation of filament.

Rocket ultraviolet spectroscopy of comet Halley and abundance of carbon monoxide and carbon

Two far ultraviolet observations of comet Halley made on 26 February, 1986 and 13 March, 1986 with a sounding rocket experiment are reported. The observed CO spatial profiles can be modelled by a radial outflow model for a parent molecule and suggest that the CO is produced directly from the nucleus of the comet. Using the observed O I emission profile to deduce the H2O production rate, the abundance of CO relative to H2O is found to be 20 percent + or - 5 percent for the first flight and 17 percent + or - 4 percent for the second flight, making CO the second most abundant parent molecule in the coma. The derived production rate of atomic carbon is consistent with that expected from the photodissociation of carbon monoxide.

Analysis of NiAlTa precipitates in beta-NiAl + 2 at. pct Ta alloy

Results are reported from experiments performed to identify the precipitates, and their orientation in the matrix, in a beta-NiAl alloy containing 2 at. pct. Ta after undergoing creep test at 1300 K. Test specimens formed by extruding hot powders were compressed at 1300 K for about 50 hr at a strain rate averaging 6/1 million per sec. The specimens were then thinned and examined under an electron microscope and by X-ray diffractometry. An intermetallic NiAlTa compound with a hexagonal Cl4 structure appeared as second phase precipitates in the samples, exhibiting plate-like shapes and a habit plane close to (012). The prism planes of the hexagonal NiAlTa precipitates paralleled the closest packed planes in the cubic beta-NiAl matrix.

Report discusses experiments on influence of solidification rates on crystallographic orientation and mechanical properties of superalloy MAR-M-246+Hf. Specimens grown in directional-solidification furnace, visually examined for microstructure, and stretched to failure in tensile-testing machine. Back-reflection Laue x-ray photographs taken to determine growth orientations.

Convective effects on directional solidification of a simulated metal alloy

The first significant results of a ground-based experimental program which supports a low gravity space processing Spacelab experiment are reported. The phenomena which precipitate pluming and thus freckling in a metal alloy analog (ammonium chloride and water) are studied in detail and the sequential events leading to massive channeling and convection are optically documented. The pluming is shown to be other than a random burst of unstable fluid from a preferred channel but rather a natural occurrence resulting from a fundamental (Rayleigh-Benard) fluid dynamic instability at the density inversion interface. This extrapolates to critical size parameters appropriate to processing of actual metal alloys.

Distortions of perceived visual directions out of pictures

Two experiments are reported examining judgments from 16 subjects who indicated the apparent direction of a photographed pointer that was rotated to different physical positions while being photographed. The photographs themselves were rotated about a vertical axis to several positions with respect to the subjects' central viewing axis. The results replicate the well-known distortion in apparent direction associated with photographed pointers positioned to project directly out of the plane of the photograph. This effect has been described by Goldstein (1979) as the 'differential rotation effect' because its magnitude is reduced as the depicted angle of the pointer becomes less orthogonal to the photograph. Analysis of the two-dimensional properties of the projected images shows that this differential rotation is related to projected angles on the surface of the photograph. This analysis may explain why circular objects often do not appear to be correctly drawn in the periphery of geometrically correct projections.

Crystallography, chemistry and structural disorder in the new high-Tc Bi-Ca-Sr-Cu-O superconductor

Diffraction experiments are reported which indicate that the new Bi-Ca-Sr-Cu-O layer-structure superconductor possesses a primitive orthorhombic unit cell with probable space group Pnnn. The material exhibits severe structural disorder which is primarily related to stacking within the layers. The apparent orthorhombic structure is an average resulting from orthorhombic material mixed with monoclinic domains in two twinned orientations. Two distinct types of structural disorder that are common in materials synthesized to date are also described. This disorder complicates the crystallographic analysis and suggests that X-ray and neutron diffraction methods may yield only an average structure.
