Comparison of layer thickness as observed by Nimbus E microwave spectrometer and by radiosonde

Atmospheric layer thicknesses observed by the microwave spectrometer of the Nimbus E satellite are compared with radiosonde-derived thicknesses for selected short periods. An average 45 m rms discrepancy is found for the 100-50 kPa layer, and several sources of this discrepancy are quantified in the following way. Correlation coefficients between pairs of spectrometer observations and between pairs of radiosonde observations are each extrapolated to zero separation distance to provide measures of instrument noise. Microwave spectrometer noise is found to be 16 m rms and radiosonde noise 23 m rms. Estimates are also made of those portions of the total discrepancy which are due to different resolution of the sensors (about 15 m rms) and real spatial and temporal variation of the atmosphere between observations (about 17 m rms).

An interstellar precursor mission

A mission out of the planetary system, with launch about the year 2000, could provide valuable scientific data as well as test some of the technology for a later mission to another star. Primary scientific objectives for the precursor mission concern characteristics of the heliopause, the interstellar medium, stellar distances (by parallax measurements), low energy cosmic rays, interplanetary gas distribution, and mass of the solar system. Secondary objectives include investigation of Pluto. Candidate science instruments are suggested. Individual spacecraft systems for the mission were considered, technology requirements and problem areas noted, and a number of recommendations made for technology study and advanced development. The most critical technology needs include attainment of 50-yr spacecraft lifetime and development of a long-life NEP system.

Sudden bending of cracked laminates

A dynamic approximate laminated plate theory is developed with emphasis placed on obtaining effective solution for the crack configuration where the 1/square root of r stress singularity and the condition of plane strain are preserved. The radial distance r is measured from the crack edge. The results obtained show that the crack moment intensity tends to decrease as the crack length to laminate plate thickness is increased. Hence, a laminated plate has the desirable feature of stabilizing a through crack as it increases its length at constant load. Also, the level of the average load intensity transmitted to a through crack can be reduced by making the inner layers to be stiffer than the outer layers. The present theory, although approximate, is useful for analyzing laminate failure to crack propagation under dynamic load conditions.

Waveband evaluation of proposed thematic mapper in forest cover classification

This study involved the evaluation of the characteristics of multispectral scanner data relative to forest cover type mapping, using NASA's NS-001 multispectral scanner to simulate the proposed Thematic Mapper (TM). The objectives were to determine: (1) the optimum number of wavebands to utilize in computer classifications of TM data; (2) which channel combinations provide the highest expected classification accuracy; and (3) the relative merit of each channel in the context of the cover classes examined. Transformed divergence was used as a measure of statistical distance between spectral class densities associated with each of twelve cover classes. The maximum overall mean pair-wise transformed divergence was used as the basis for evaluating all possible waveband combinations available for use in computer-assisted forest cover classifications.

The detection of the coal roof interface by use of high pressure water

A device whereby water jets can be used to detect the interface between coal and the overlying roof rock is described. Once this identification is made this distance can be measured using instruments such as the autofocus systems recently developed in the photographic industry. Experiments carried out show that the device can discriminate between coal and rock at coal thicknesses up to 8 inches. An autofocus system was examined which indicates accuracies of better than 0.1 inches.

Noise measurements for single and multiple operation of 50 kw wind turbine generators

The noise characteristics of the U.S. Windpower Inc., 50 kw wind turbine generator were measured at various distances from 30 m to 1100 m and for a range of output power. The generated noise is affected by the aerodynamic wakes of the tower legs at frequencies below about 120 Hz and the blade trailing edge thickness at frequencies of about 2 kHz. Rope strakes and airfoil fairings on the legs did not result in substantial noise reductions. Sharpening the blade trailing edges near the tip was effective in reducing broad band noise near 2 kHz. For multiple machines the sound fields are superposed. A three-fold increase in number of machines (from 1 to 3) results in a predicted increase in he sound pressure level of about 5 dB. The detection threshold for 14 machines operating in a 13 - 20 mph wind is observed to be at approximately 1160 m in the downwind direction.

Evaluation of criteria for selecting the spectral attributes of digital LANDSAT MSS imagery for discriminating lithological units in the lower Curaca River Valley, Bahia

The use of spectral attributes criteria was investigated, based on measures of statistical distance of separability between thematic classes in MSS digital LANDSAT imagery, in order to select the best subsets of channels in composite colors for the detection and discrimination of lithological units in the lower valley of Curaca River, State of Bahia, Brazil. Three situations were investigated: (1) selection of the three best channels, considering all of the original bands (channels 4, 5, 6, and 7); (2) selection of the three best bands, considering the six MSS band-ratios (channels 4/5, 4/6. 4/7, 5/6, 5/7, and 6/7); and (3) selection of the three best bands in a hybrid approach (the four original bands and the six ratios). A visual analysis was done on color composite images using the selected sets. Results show that the hybrid product (bands 4, 5/7, and 7 with green, blue, and red respectively) and the Normal Color Composite (bands 4, 5, and 7 with blue, green, and red colors respectively) had the best performance.

Geodetic and geophysical results from Lageos

Seven years of laser tracking of the Lageos spacecraft have been used to derive geodetic quantities describing the earth and its rotational motion. The dynamical motions of the solid-earth on its axis have been derived continuously since launch and changes in the length-of-day show very high correlation with variations in the atmospheric zonal winds between 1000 and 50 mbars. A significant improvement in the determination of the product of the earth's mass and the gravitational constant has been made. The high accuracy of the orbit determination of Lageos over the 7 years since launch has permitted the identification of a small deceleration in the nodal precession of the orbit. This deceleration is being caused by a small reduction in the flattening of the earth arising from the rebound of the earth after the last ice age. Measurements of the distances between the tracking stations over several years are showing changes consistent with tectonic plate motion and with general ideas of vertical movements.

Reference frequency transmission over optical fiber

A 100-MHz reference frequency from a hydrogen maser frequency standard has been transmitted via optical fiber over a 14-km distance with a measured stability of 1.5 X 10 to the-15 power for 1000 seconds averaging time. This capability was demonstrated in a frequency distribution experiment performed in April, 1986. The reference frequency was transmitted over a single-mode fiber-optic link from Deep Space Station (DSS) 13 to DSS 12 and back. The background leading up to the experiment and the significance of stable reference frequency distribution in the Deep Space Network (DSN) is discussed. Also described are the experiment, including the fiber-optic link, the measurement method and equipment, and finally the results of the experiment.

An astrometric facility for planetary detection on the space station

An Astrometric Telescope Facility (ATF) for planetary detection is being studied as a potential space station initial operating capability payload. The primary science objective of this mission is the detection and study of planetary systems around other stars. In addition, the facility will be capable of other astrometric measurements such as stellar motions of other galaxies and highly precise direct measurement of stellar distance within the Milky Way Galaxy. The results of a recently completed ATF preliminary systems definition study are summarized. Results of this study indicate that the preliminary concept for the facility is fully capable of meeting the science objective without the development of any new technologies. A simple straightforward operations approach was developed for the ATF. A real-time facility control is not normally required, but does maintain a near real-time ground monitoring capability for the facility and science data stream on a full-time basis. Facility observational sequences are normally loaded once a week. In addition, the preliminary system is designed to be fail-safe and single-fault tolerant. Routine interactions by the space station crew with the ATF will not be necessary, but onboard controls are provided for crew override as required for emergencies and maintenance.

High-velocity emission in young supernova remnants: SN 1006 and SN 1572

The paper reports the discovery of broad H-alpha emission from the SN 1006 remnant with a FWHM velocity of 2600 + or - 100 km/s. This emission is similar to that seen in the remnant of SN 1572 which has a FWHM for H-alpha of 1800 km/s. The nonradiative model was used to interpret the line widths and the derived shock velocity was compared with proper motion measurements to derive distances of 1.4-2.1 kpc to SN 1006 and 2.0-2.8 kpc to SN 1572.

Cone sampling array models

A model is described for positioning cones in the retina. Each cone has a circular disk of influence, and the disks are tightly packed outward from the center. This model has three parameters that can vary with eccentricity: the mean radius of the cone disk, the standard deviation of the cone disk radius, and the standard deviation of postpacking jitter. Estimates for these parameters out to 1.6 deg are found by using measurements reported by Hirsch and Hylton (1985) and Hirsch and Miller (1987) of the positions of the cone inner segments of an adult macaque. The estimation is based on fitting measures of variation in local intercone distances, and the fit to these measures is good.

Automatic voice recognition using traditional and artificial neural network approaches

The main objective of this research is to develop an algorithm for isolated-word recognition. This research is focused on digital signal analysis rather than linguistic analysis of speech. Features extraction is carried out by applying a Linear Predictive Coding (LPC) algorithm with order of 10. Continuous-word and speaker independent recognition will be considered in future study after accomplishing this isolated word research. To examine the similarity between the reference and the training sets, two approaches are explored. The first is implementing traditional pattern recognition techniques where a dynamic time warping algorithm is applied to align the two sets and calculate the probability of matching by measuring the Euclidean distance between the two sets. The second is implementing a backpropagation artificial neural net model with three layers as the pattern classifier. The adaptation rule implemented in this network is the generalized least mean square (LMS) rule. The first approach has been accomplished. A vocabulary of 50 words was selected and tested. The accuracy of the algorithm was found to be around 85 percent. The second approach is in progress at the present time.

The spectral relationships between NEA and the meteorites: An overview using principal components analysis

One of the primary reservoirs for meteorites is probably the planet-crossing Aten, Apollo, and Amor asteroids. Comparing the spectral characteristics of these two populations with each other and with the spectra of the main belt asteroids would provide insight into the dynamical processes that deliver meteorites to Earth. One method for obtaining an overview of general relationships in a large spectral data set is the statistical technique of principal components analysis. This technique quantifies general spectral similarities and reprojects the data in a plot of major axes of variation where distance is a measure of relative similarity. A major caveat should be kept in mind, however, spectra are sensitive to particle size and viewing geometry effects, and near Earth asteroids (NEA's) are probably significantly different from main belt asteroids in both these factors. The analysis was restricted to the spectral range of ECAS filters and included 116 meteorite spectra from the Gaffey (1976) survey and 417 asteroids from the Zellner et. al. (1985) survey of which 13 are planet-crossers. Although thirteen asteroids are not much of a sample on which to base conclusions, a few inferences can be drawn from this exercise. First, the NEA spectral characteristics are, on average, more consistent with the spectra of meteorites than are the main belt asteroids. Second, the S-type NEA's tend to be spectrally more similar to the ordinary chondrite meteorites than the main belt S-types. This suggests that the planet-crossing S-types do not represent the spectral range of the main belt S-type population and that the planet-crossing S-types are on average more like the ordinary chondrites than the main belt S-types. Third, the only direct asteroidal ordinary chondrite analog, the Q-type asteroid, 1862 Apollo, plots well within the field of the ordinary chondrite meteorites and represents the most common meteorite fall type. Finally, it is interesting that the planet-crossing asteroids occupy similar PCA space with the general trend of the meteorites while most of the main belt objects are offset from the meteorites in statistical space.

A simulation-based test bed for data-association algorithms

A modular All-Source System-evaluation Test bed (ASSET) designed and developed for aiding in the testing and evaluation of advanced data-acquisition algorithms is described, with focus placed on the problem of integrating surveillance information in supporting command decision making. The evaluation procedure employed is based on a measure of the distance between a baseline representation and the representation produced by the association algorithm at some time instant. Choices for the baseline representation are presented, and scores are defined between these baselines and an algorithm representation. The test-bed architecture implementing the evaluation procedure is described, and sample outputs from performing algorithm evaluations in the test bed are outlined.

Direct simulation with vibration-dissociation coupling

The majority of implementations of the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method of Bird do not account for vibration-dissociation coupling. Haas and Boyd have proposed the vibrationally-favored dissociation model to accomplish this task. This model requires measurements of induction distance to determine model constants. A more general expression has been derived that does not require any experimental input. The model is used to calculate one-dimensional shock waves in nitrogen and the flow past a lunar transfer vehicle (LTV). For the conditions considered in the simulation, the influence of vibration-dissociation coupling on heat transfer in the stagnation region of the LTV can be significant.
