Space Images for NASA JPL Android Version

This software addresses the demand for easily accessible NASA JPL images and videos by providing a user friendly and simple graphical user interface that can be run via the Android platform from any location where Internet connection is available. This app is complementary to the iPhone version of the application. A backend infrastructure stores, tracks, and retrieves space images from the JPL Photojournal and Institutional Communications Web server, and catalogs the information into a streamlined rating infrastructure. This system consists of four distinguishing components: image repository, database, server-side logic, and Android mobile application. The image repository contains images from various JPL flight projects. The database stores the image information as well as the user rating. The server-side logic retrieves the image information from the database and categorizes each image for display. The Android mobile application is an interfacing delivery system that retrieves the image information from the server for each Android mobile device user. Also created is a reporting and tracking system for charting and monitoring usage. Unlike other Android mobile image applications, this system uses the latest emerging technologies to produce image listings based directly on user input. This allows for countless combinations of images returned. The backend infrastructure uses industry-standard coding and database methods, enabling future software improvement and technology updates. The flexibility of the system design framework permits multiple levels of display possibilities and provides integration capabilities. Unique features of the software include image/video retrieval from a selected set of categories, image Web links that can be shared among e-mail users, sharing to Facebook/Twitter, marking as user's favorites, and image metadata searchable for instant results.

Hybrid-Electric Aero-Propulsion Controls Testbed Results

NASA is supporting the development of Electrified Aircraft Propulsion (EAP) technology due to its potential to reduce aircraft fuel burn, emissions, and noise as well as improving safety and performance. One focus of this research is the electrification of conventional turbomachinery propulsion systems, which offers ways to improve the performance and operability of turbine-engine powered aircraft through the addition of electro-mechanical systems. These hybrid-electric turbine engines provide additional actuation and energy management control opportunities for improving stability and transient response behavior. This paper summarizes the results of a Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test performed at the NASA Electric Aircraft Testbed (NEAT) during the summer of 2022. The test demonstrates the feasibility and performance of an advanced energy management control strategy by integrating a simulated turbofan engine with scaled electro-mechanical hardware. A full-scale real-time reference model of a geared turbofan was run alongside a scaled electro-mechanical system representing the electrified turbofan components operating at a megawatt-scale power level. The model was interfaced with the hardware through a novel closed-loop control and scaling algorithm that emulated the dynamic speed and torque response of the turbofan shafts. The control strategy was implemented on the electrical machines connected to the emulated turbomachinery shafts. The results from the testbed are compared against simulations that predict the testbed and geared turbofan model operation. The energy management control strategy successfully changed the operating point of the engine model and improved its stability during throttle transients. These results also demonstrate the success of the novel closed loop control and scaling approach for emulating turbomachinery and elevate the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of the energy management control strategy.

Sub-Seasonal Variability of the Asian Summer Monsoon Transport of CO and Aerosols to the UTLS and Implications for Global Atmospheric Composition

The upper troposphere/ lower stratosphere (UTLS) is a climate sensitive region. The Asian summer monsoon (ASM) is a major component in the climate system. It transports aerosols and trace gases from the most polluted regions in Asia to UTLS where they spread out to the global atmosphere. Although ASM is a seasonal phenomenon with strongest global influences usually seen in summer, it is highly dynamic and connected to other weather and climate systems, with significant spatial and temporal variability ranging from sub-seasonal weather scale to multi-year climate scale. The interplay of multi-scale dynamics inevitably determines the variability of the transport pathways and atmospheric composition in the UTLS.

A guide to NASA's Pilot Land Data System (PLDS)

NASA's Pilot Land Data System (PLDS) is a distributed information management system designed to support NASA's land science community. The PLDS provides a wide range of services including management of information about scientific data, access to a library of scientific data, a data ordering capability, communications, connection to data analysis facilities, and electronic mail. The PLDS provides these services by offering the scientist the capability to search for and order data, and to communicate electronically with other scientists and computers. Three functions enable scientists to find what data are available and where they reside. The first two, Find data summaries and Read detailed descriptions give summary and detailed descriptions about data sets or groups of related data sets, science, projects, and institutions which archive land data. The third, gives information about specific pieces of data. This last function has two components, Search systemwide inventory and Search local inventory. The first component enables the user to find data elements (images, geological samples, transects, maps, etc.) that exist anywhere in the PLDS while the second has only information about data at the local site. The first enables the user to find pieces of data from several different data sets with the same temporal and spatial coverage and other elements common to most data sets, while the second allows the user to select a data set based on these descriptors and on those that are unique to a data set. The PLDS provides capabilities that enable electronic file transfers, intercomputer connection, and electronic mail. Both TCP/IP and DECnet protocols are supported via the NASA Science Internet (NIS). Access is also available through Telenet.

Interstellar absorption lines in the spectrum of 3C 273

Absorption lines near the rest wavelengths of the Si IV doublet (wavelengths 1393.76, 1402.77) with equivalent widths 533 and 235 mA are reported in the spectrum of QSO 3C 273. The profiles show the nature of hot gas along a high-latitude (b = 64 deg) line of sight through our entire halo. The lines have full width at half-maxima of 100 km/s, compared to an instrumental resolution of 35 km/s, are centered at zero velocity, and show no evidence for components with equivalent widths greater than 50 mA at an absolute value of v greater than 75 km/s. The absence of high peculiar velocities is consistent with published spectra of halo gas over shorter pathlengths. The implications of this result are discussed, with particular reference to the possible connection between galactic halos and QSO absorption lines, for which C IV and Si IV usually have a broader velocity range.

LPM effect and primary energy estimations

The distortion of the electron cascade development under LPM effects is now admitted; it consists of an increase of depth of showers origin, of shower maximum T sum max, a decrease of the number of particles at maximum N sub max and results in a flattening and a widening of the cascade transition curve. Connected with the influence of multiple Coulomb scattering on basic electromagnetic processes (bremsstrahlung, pair production), this effect appears at high energy with a threshold dependent on the density of the medium (more than 10 TeV for lead, more than 10 sup 6 TeV in air). Consequently, the electromagnetic components of hadron induced showers in lead and EAS in air calculated for the same hadronic cascades in the different alternative, including or not the LPM effect are examined here.

Aspects of the 40-50 day oscillation during the northern summer as inferred from outgoing longwave radiation

The intraseasonal variability (ISV) of tropical convection during the northern summer and its connection with the monsoon over India and east Asia is studied from a planetary-scale perspective. A 40-50 day oscillation consisting primarily of an east-west oriented dipole with centers located over the Indian Ocean/Subcontinent and the western Pacific is shown to be an important component of the ISV of tropical convection during summer. Over these regions, the oscillation undergoes complex structural changes which are manifested in simultaneous cloudiness propagation eastward along the equator from the eastern Indian Ocean to the western Pacific, northward from the Indian Ocean into the Subcontinent, and northwestward from the equatorial western Pacific to the South China Sea. The oscillation is also found to be phase-locked to the monsoon onset of India, the Mei-yu regime over South China, and, in general, the seasonal variation of convection over the equatorial Indian-West Pacific Ocean.

Modal survey testing of the Lidar In-space Technology Experiment (LITE) - A Space Shuttle payload

This paper presents the results of the modal survey test of the Lidar In-space Technology Experiment (LITE), a Space Shuttle payload mounted in a Spacelab flight single pallet. The test was performed by the Dynamics Test Branch at Marshall Space Flight Center, AL and run in two phases. In the first phase, an unloaded orthogrid connected to the pallet with 52 tension struts was tested. This test included 73 measurement points in three directions. In the second phase, the pallet was integrated with mass simulators mounted on the flight support structure to represent the dynamics (weight and center of gravity) of the various components comprising the LITE experiment and instrumented at 213 points in 3 directions. The test article was suspended by an air bag system to simulate a free-free boundary condition. This paper presents the results obtained from the testing and analytical model correlation efforts. The effect of the suspension system on the test article is also discussed.

Cross-Compiler for Modeling Space-Flight Systems

Ripples is a computer program that makes it possible to specify arbitrarily complex space-flight systems in an easy-to-learn, high-level programming language and to have the specification automatically translated into LibSim, which is a text-based computing language in which such simulations are implemented. LibSim is a very powerful simulation language, but learning it takes considerable time, and it requires that models of systems and their components be described at a very low level of abstraction. To construct a model in LibSim, it is necessary to go through a time-consuming process that includes modeling each subsystem, including defining its fault-injection states, input and output conditions, and the topology of its connections to other subsystems. Ripples makes it possible to describe the same models at a much higher level of abstraction, thereby enabling the user to build models faster and with fewer errors. Ripples can be executed in a variety of computers and operating systems, and can be supplied in either source code or binary form. It must be run in conjunction with a Lisp compiler.

Development Testing and Subsequent Failure Investigation of a Spring Strut Mechanism

Commodities are transferred between the Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) crew module (CM) and service module (SM) via an external umbilical that is driven apart with spring-loaded struts after the structural connection is severed. The spring struts must operate correctly for the modules to separate safely. There was no vibration testing of strut development units scoped in the MPCV Program Plan; therefore, any design problems discovered as a result of vibration testing would not have been found until the component qualification. The NASA Engineering and Safety Center (NESC) and Lockheed Martin (LM) performed random vibration testing on a single spring strut development unit to assess its ability to withstand qualification level random vibration environments. Failure of the strut while exposed to random vibration resulted in a follow-on failure investigation, design changes, and additional development tests. This paper focuses on the results of the failure investigations including identified lessons learned and best practices to aid in future design iterations of the spring strut and to help other mechanism developers avoid similar pitfalls.

A Singular Value Decomposition Framework for Retrievals with Vertical Distribution Information from Greenhouse Gas Column Absorption Spectroscopy Measurements

We review the singular value decomposition (SVD) framework and use it for quantifying and discerning vertical information in greenhouse gas retrievals from column integrated absorption measurements. While the commonly used traditional Bayesian optimal estimation (OE) assumes a prior distribution in order to regularize the inversion problem, the SVD approach identifies principal components that can be retrieved from the measurement without explicitly specifying a prior mean and prior covariance matrix. We review the SVD method, explicitly recognize the use of an uninformative prior and show it to incur no bias from the choice of the prior. We also make the connection between the SVD method and the pseudo-inverse, which makes it more intuitive and easy to understand. We illustrate the use of the SVD method on an integrated path differential absorption CO2 lidar measurement model and verify our derivations and bias-free properties versus optimal estimation using numerical simulations. In contrast, traditional OE retrievals exhibit bias when the prior mean used in the retrieval differs from the true mean. Hence, the SVD method is particularly useful for situations in which knowledge of the prior mean and prior covariance of the true state (e.g., greenhouse gas profiles) is inadequate.

Alternative Setup for Long-Duration Low-Duty-Cycle 600°C Ambient Testing of SiC Integrated Circuits

A scalable, compact oven testbed system for simultaneously evaluating a multitude of high temperature integrated circuits (ICs) for prolonged operating times of up to 600 °C has been prototyped. The new testbed system enables long-duration high temperature testing in sufficient statistical quantities consistent with standard aerospace electronics engineering standards. This setup is comprised of multiple compact ovens housing chips or packages mounted to ceramic circuit boards. Each oven is a compact 15.2 cm length by 15.2 cm width by 12.7 cm depth with a maximum 400 Watts of heating power. The custom-made silicon oxide ceramic heating block inside each oven is based on a 3D printed design adapted for the easy insertion of the IC device under test (DUT). This innovative design provides the quick insertion of ICs with or without a ceramic package into a 600 °C environment by utilizing a movable 11.43 cm long ceramic substrate with electrical traces extending from the oven hot zone to external standard plastic-based board connectors. Another key oven design feature is the minimization of the DUT exposure to electromagnetic interference (EMI) by utilizing a filtered DC power source to reduce heating element noise. Additionally, the ovens can be configured in a parallel arrangement allowing global data monitoring over a single industrial RS422 serial port. This feature is important for scaling up to test multiple ICs semi-simultaneously. A USB serial port is provided to independently control the operating parameters of each oven such as the oven target temperature and oven ramp rate. The oven temperature can reach up to 600 °C with a confirmed +/- 4 °C maximum deviation across the test zone region. The ramp rate can be programmed from 1 °C/minute up to 10 °C/minute. Furthermore, a programmable switchboard is used to interface with the DUT. This switchboard comprises a National Instruments Peripheral Component Interconnect eXtension for Instrumentation (NI PXI) system and a breakout board to send and receive power, analog or digital test signals. By using this unique oven testbed system, a variety of ICs can now be tested in parallel using the same test components configured for a diverse set of requirements.

Troposphere-Thermosphere Tidal Coupling as Measured by the SABER Instrument on TIMED during July-September, 2002

Coupling between the troposphere and lower thermosphere due to upward-propagating tides is investigated using temperatures measured from the SABER instrument on the TIMED satellite. The data analyzed here are confined to 20-120 km altitude and +/-40 deg latitude during 20 July 20 September, 2002. Apart from the migrating (sun-synchronous) tidal components, the predominant feature seen (from the satellite frame) during this period is a wave-4 structure in longitude with extrema of up to +/-40-50 K at 110 km. Amplitudes and longitudes of maxima of this structure evolve as the satellite precesses in local time, and as the wave(s) responsible for this structure vary with time. The primary wave responsible for the wave-4 pattern is the eastward-propagating diurnal tide with zonal wavenumber s=3 (DE3). Its average amplitude distribution over the interval is quasi-symmetric about the equator, similar to that of a Kelvin wave, with maximum of about 20 K at 5 deg S and 110 km. DE3 is primarily excited by latent heating due to deep tropical convection in the troposphere. It is demonstrated that existence of DE3 is intimately connected with the predominant wave-4 longitude distribution of topography and land-sea difference at low latitudes, and an analogy is drawn with the strong presence of DE1 in Mars atmosphere, the predominant wave-2 topography on Mars, and the wave-2 patterns that dominate density measurements from the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft near 130 km. Additional diurnal, semidiurnal and terdiurnal nonmigrating tides are also revealed in the present study. These tidal components are most likely excited by nonlinear interactions between their migrating counterparts and the stationary planetary wave with s=1 known to exist in the Southern Hemisphere during this period just prior to the austral mid-winter stratospheric warming of 2002.

The X-ray spectra and the rotation-activity connection of RS CVN binaries

Results from a survey of RS CVn binaries which were observed with the Imaging Proportional Counter (IPC) on board the Einstein Observatory are presented. Spectral analyses of the IPC pulse height spectra show that the coronae of RS CVn binaries always contain hot gas with temperatures 10 million K, similar to active late-type main sequence stars, and that at least 2 temperature components are necessary to account for the higher quality IPC spectra (when absorption is unimportant). It is argued that these bimodal temperature distributions indicate true distributions of emission measure vs temperature that are continuous (just as is the case for magnetically-confined coronal plasma loops observed on the Sun). It is shown that none of the derivable X-ray characteristics of RS CVn binaries depend on rotation period, implying that claims of period-activity relationships in RS CVn binaries are unfounded.

Using OPeNDAP In The Cloud to Connect NASA Data Centers and Support Open Data Access

NASA DAACs (Distributed Active Archive Centers), including the Goddard Earth Sciences Data Information and Services Center (GES DISC), are currently transitioning from on-premises servers to a shared Earthdata Cloud in order to build more interoperability, cross-collaboration, and streamlined services between their data centers. Migrating its on-premises OPeNDAP service to the cloud is a critical component of making this interconnectedness between NASA DAACs possible. To improve their cloud services, GES DISC is leveraging open-source platforms like Github to collect user feedback, create use cases, and develop resources to enable real-time learning for users about OPeNDAP in the cloud. This presentation gives an overview of the OPeNDAP in the cloud, resources developed to access this service, and considerations for improved user guidance and experience to further support NASA's commitment to the Open-Source Science Initiative (OSSI).

The NASA/industry design analysis methods for vibrations (DAMVIBS) program: Accomplishments and contributions

A NASA Langley-sponsored rotorcraft structural dynamics program, known as Design Analysis Methods for VIBrationS (DAMVIBS), has been under development since 1984. The objective of this program was to establish the technology base needed by the industry to develop an advanced finite-element-based dynamics design analysis capability for vibrations. Under the program, teams from the four major helicopter manufacturers have formed finite-element models, conducted ground vibration tests, made test/analysis comparisons of both metal and composite airframes, performed 'difficult components' studies on airframes to identify components which need more complete finite-element representation for improved correlation, and evaluated industry codes for computing coupled rotor-airframe vibrations. Studies aimed at establishing the role that structural optimization can play in airframe vibrations design work have also been initiated. Five government/industry meetings were held in connection with these activities during the course of the program. Because the DAMVIBS Program is coming to an end, the fifth meeting included a brief assessment of the program and its benefits to the industry.
