Thermionic Spacecraft Design Study

This report presents the results of a design study of nuclear-electric propelled unmanned spacecraft. The electric power source is in-core thermionic reactors based on either the internally (flashlight) or externally fueled diode concept. The study guidelines and approach are defined. The characteristics of the candidate launch vehicles, thrust subsystem, and communications subsystem are presented. The definition of two spacecraft/powerplant configurations are presented which deliver 240 kWe net to the thruster array. This definition, presented for both the flashlight and externally fueled reactors includes the key items of spacecraft arrangement and a detailed weight breakdown. Power conditioning, heat rejection subsystem, shielding, and spacecraft structure are detailed. The results show about a 30 percent weight advantage for the spacecraft based on the externally fueled reactor. This is primarily due to a 120 vdc power output from the externally fueled reactor, as compared to a 15 vdc power output from the flashlight reactor. Weight reduction by improved technology could further reduce the weight by 5 to 15 percent.

Space shuttle low cost/risk avionics study

All work breakdown structure elements containing any avionics related effort were examined for pricing the life cycle costs. The analytical, testing, and integration efforts are included for the basic onboard avionics and electrical power systems. The design and procurement of special test equipment and maintenance and repair equipment are considered. Program management associated with these efforts is described. Flight test spares and labor and materials associated with the operations and maintenance of the avionics systems throughout the horizontal flight test are examined. It was determined that cost savings can be achieved by using existing hardware, maximizing orbiter-booster commonality, specifying new equipments to MIL quality standards, basing redundancy on cost effective analysis, minimizing software complexity and reducing cross strapping and computer-managed functions, utilizing compilers and floating point computers, and evolving the design as dictated by the horizontal flight test schedules.

Additional research on instabilities in atmospheric flow systems associated with clear air turbulence

Analytical and experimental fluid mechanics studies were conducted to investigate instabilities in atmospheric flow systems associated with clear air turbulence. The experimental portion of the program was conducted using an open water channel which allows investigation of flows having wide ranges of shear and density stratification. The program was primarily directed toward studies of the stability of straight, stratified shear flows with particular emphasis on the effects of velocity profile on stability; on studies of three-dimensional effects on the breakdown region in shear layers; on the the interaction of shear flows with long-wave length internal waves; and on the stability of shear flows consisting of adjacent stable layers. The results of these studies were used to evaluate methods used in analyses of CAT encounters in the atmosphere involving wave-induced shear layer instabilities of the Kelvin-Helmholta type. A computer program was developed for predicting shear-layer instability and CAT induced by mountain waves. This technique predicts specific altitudes and locations where CAT would be expected.
