Electron beam treatment for invasive pests

A system and method for the treatment of invasive pests includes an irradiation device that can generate an electron beam that is applicable to a tree infected by an invasive pest, wherein the electron beam provides an in-situ treatment for the tree infected by the invasive pest by killing the invasive pest via electron beam irradiation. One or more temperature sensors can be used to track the internal temperature of a tree surrogate. A differential temperature difference tracked by temperature sensor can be used to ensure that a reduction in temperature of the tree is attributable to the electron beam rather than increase in heat.

Electron beam echoes in the IOTA ring

This study is a continuation of previous efforts to demonstrate the possibility of electron beam echo generation in the IOTA ring. Transverse beam echoes are conventionally produced by a dipole kick followed by a single quadrupole kick. We seek to use multiple quadrupole kicks over successive turns to generate an echo larger than that from a single kick. We use beam echo theory and simulations to model and predict the expected echo generated by multiple quadrupole kicks. We also run simulated scans over various parameters relevant to the echo to optimize the echo amplitude, including delay time, quadrupole strength, tune split, and pulse number. Effects due to quantum excitation and synchrotron damping (which are particularly relevant with electrons) were also considered in simulation. Results indicate that given sufficient quadrupole kick strength, we should expect to be able to measure electron beam echoes in the IOTA ring.

Beam-steering system based on a MEMS-actuated vertical-coupler array

An integrated-optics MEMS-actuated beam-steering system is disclosed, wherein the beam-steering system includes a lens and a programmable vertical coupler array having a switching network and an array of vertical couplers, where the switching network can energize of the vertical couplers such that it efficiently emits the light into free-space. The lens collimates the light received from the energized vertical coupler and directs the output beam along a propagation direction determined by the position of the energized vertical coupler within the vertical-coupler array. In some embodiments, the vertical coupler is configured to correct an aberration of the lens. In some embodiments, more than one vertical coupler can be energized to enable steering of multiple output beams. In some embodiments, the switching network is non-blocking.

High-Performance Accelerator Modeling: Toward Improving Controls and Diagnostics for High-Brightness Beams in Experiment

One of the main charges of beam physics is to improve the overall beam quality delivered to experiments and applications, which is generally quantified by the beam brightness. High brightness beams have numerous applications, including x-ray free electron lasers and ultrafast electron diffraction (UED). To these ends, this thesis details efforts to use high-performance models --- high-fidelity models that execute quickly --- for controls and diagnostics. To demonstrate the generality of these techniques, this thesis focuses on three of the most successful photoinjector designs currently used worldwide: the UCLA/SLAC/BNL-type high-gradient S-band gun, the continuous-wave high-repetition rate VHF APEX gun and the L-band DESY-PITZ-type gun. Work will be shown from Pegasus (UCLA), HiRES (LBNL) and FAST (FNAL).Specifically, data-driven models for online virtual diagnostics are presented, in this case, in the context of UED at HiRES, leading to a temporal resolution improvement. Methods for improving the fidelity of physics-based models are discussed, with examples at HiRES, Pegasus and FAST. Markov-chain Monte Carlo analysis is applied to match simulations, in the context of photocathode studies at HiRES and Pegasus. Lastly, the augmentation of online model-based predictions with model-independent optimization is explored in a fluctuating environment at Pegasus and HiRES. A central theme of this dissertation is working with parameter fluctuations when modeling an accelerator beamline. Long-term drifts and shot-to-shot jitter exist in every accelerator to a varying degree and therefore play an important role in every chapter of this dissertation. This thesis attempts to address the issues associated with these fluctuations when trying to develop faithful model representations of the system.

Measuring the Beam-Spin Asymmetry of Hard Exclusive ¿0 Production off the Neutron with CLAS12

Over the course of the last couple of decades, Generalised Parton Distributions (GPDs) have become a compelling area of focus in both theoretical and experimental research in the ?eld of hadronic structure. GPDs can be indirectly accessed via observables in hard exclusive reactions such as Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) and Deeply Virtual Meson Production (DVMP). In these reactions, an incident lepton scatters o? an individual quark within the target nucleon via the exchange of a virtual photon, and a real photon (DVCS) or a meson (DVMP) are emitted as a result. This thesis presents an analysis of Deeply Virtual ?0 Meson Production o? the neutron in the deuteron (nDV?0P). The data were taken with the CLAS12 detector, which is housed in the experimental Hall B at the Je?erson National Laboratory (JLab) in Virginia, USA. A longitudinally polarised electron beam delivered by JLab?s Continuous Electron Beam accelerator Facility (CEBAF), at an energy of 10.2 and 10.6 GeV, was incident on a liquid deuterium target housed within the CLAS12 detector assembly. The nDV?0P channel is sensitive to the lesser-studied chiral-odd transversity GPDs. GPDs are accessed indirectly via observables related to the cross-sections of hard exclusive processes. One such example is the beam-spin asymmetry (?LU) as a function of Trento-?, the angle between the leptonic plane and the hadronic plane which are de?ned with the beam and scattered electron, and with the recoiling neutron and reconstructed ?0, respectively. Despite the limited statistics, the observable ?LU was successfully extracted for eight kinematic bins (four in Mandelstam ?, and two in ??). This is a ?rst measurement for nDV?0P in the phase-space which is now available with CLAS12 in the 12 GeV era of JLab.

Measurement of T-Dependence of the Beam Asymmetry (S) for the Reaction yp --> n'p AT GLUEX

We report on a measurement of the four-momentum transfer (-t) dependence of the Beam Asymmetry (Sigma) for the reaction yp --> n'p with the linearly polarized photon beam at GlueX. The observable is sensitive to the n' production mechanism. The Beam Asymmetry (Sigma) was extracted from azimuthal angular distributions (phi) combined to obtain yield asymmetries. This technique removes most contributions from instrumental asymmetries. These data are based on a data set that is five times more extensive than previous measurements. This allowed us to double the kinematic reach in the four-momentum transfer squared (-t) and reduce the statistical uncertainties. Up to a four-momentum transfer squared (-t) of 1.7 GeV2, the beam asymmetry is positive, close to unity, and shows little dependence on the four-momentum transfer -t. This indicates that the production process continues to be dominated by exchanges of the rho (p) and the omega (w) mesons. Further systematic cross-check was done by analyzing the decay mode nr^0r^0. This analysis also revealed positive asymmetries closer to unity providing an important systematic cross-check for the results obtained using n'-->nr+r-.

Linac_Gen: integrating machine learning and particle-in-cell methods for enhanced beam dynamics at Fermilab

Here, we introduce Linac_Gen, a tool developed at Fermilab, which combines machine learning algorithms with Particle-in-Cell methods to advance beam dynamics in linacs. Linac_Gen employs techniques such as Random Forest, Genetic Algorithms, Support Vector Machines, and Neural Networks, achieving a tenfold increase in speed for phase-space matching in linacs over traditional methods through the use of genetic algorithms. Crucially, Linac_Gen's adept handling of 3D field maps elevates the precision and realism in simulating beam instabilities and resonances, marking a key advancement in the field. Benchmarked against established codes, Linac_Gen demonstrates not only improved efficiency and precision in beam dynamics studies but also in the design and optimization of linac systems, as evidenced in its application to Fermilab's PIP-II linac project. This work represents a notable advancement in accelerator physics, marrying ML with PIC methods to set new standards for efficiency and accuracy in accelerator design and research. Linac_Gen exemplifies a novel approach in accelerator technology, offering substantial improvements in both theoretical and practical aspects of beam dynamics.

New Search for a Sterile Neutrino at MicroBooNE with BNB and NuMI Beams

The MicroBooNE experiment employs an 85-ton active volume liquid argon time projection chamber to detect neutrinos from both the on-axis Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) and off-axis Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beam. This poster describes short baseline neutrino oscillations in a 3+1 sterile neutrino model and presents the MicroBooNE results using only the BNB beam. Additionally, it states the impact of a degeneracy resulting from the cancellation of $\nu_e$ appearance and disappearance and demonstrates that combining data from the BNB and NuMI beams, which have substantially different $\nu_e/\nu_\mu$ ratios, can break this degeneracy.

Errant Beam Prognostics with Machine Leaning at SNS Accelerator

Particle Accelerators are complex machine with many pieces of equipment running in synchronization to deliver required beam. However, faults in particle accelerators reduce the availability of the beam for experiments affecting the overall science output. To avoid these faults, we apply anomaly detection techniques to predict any unusual behavior and perform preemptive actions to improve the total availability. Many researchers have adopted semi-supervised Machine Learning (ML) methods such as auto-encoders and variational auto-encoders for such tasks. However, supervised ML techniques designed for similarity learning such as Siamese Neural Network (SNN) can outperform semi-supervised or unsupervised methods for anomaly prediction. One of the challenges associated with application of ML models to particle accelerators is the variability in observed data over time due to system configuration changes. We employ conditional models such as Conditional Siamese Neural Networks (CSNN), and Conditional-VAE (CVAE) to learn the variability in the data by using beam configuration parameters as conditional input. We apply these models for errant beam prediction at Spallation Neutron Source accelerator under different system configurations and compare their performance. We demonstrate that CSNN outperforms CVAE in our application. This talk will present the data source, collection, analysis, data-preparation, model development, hyper-parameter studies and the results.

Searching for Sterile Neutrinos In the NOvA Experiment and Measurements of Hadronic Energy Response with NOvA Test Beam Data

The NOvA (NuMI Off-Axis electron neutrino Appearance) experiment is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment composed of two functionally identical detectors: a 300-ton Near Detector and a 14-kton Far Detector, separated by 809 km and placed 14 mrad off the axis of the NuMI neutrino beam created at Fermilab. This configuration enables NOvA’s rich neutrino physics program, which includes measuring neutrino mixing parameters, determining the neutrino mass hierarchy, probing CP violation in the leptonic sector, studying neutrino cross sections, searching for sterile neutrinos, and more.\\ In this thesis I will present two independent analyses developed within the NOvA experiment. The first is a search for light sterile neutrino oscillations in the 3+1 framework using $\nu_\mu$-CC and NC samples from the NOvA Near and Far Detectors. Light sterile neutrinos are hypothetical neutral leptons that do not participate in the weak interactions but can mix with the three known active neutrinos: $\nu_e$, $\nu_\mu$, and $\nu_\tau$. Anomalous results, such as $\nu_e$/$\bar{\nu}e$ appearance in a $\nu_\mu$ ($\bar{\nu}_\mu$) beam observed by the MiniBooNE and LSND experiments, can be explained by the existence of sterile neutrinos. Thus, proving the existence of this type of neutrino is essential. The latest results of these searches in the NOvA experiment, along with contributions to this effort, will be presented.\\ The second is the first measurement of the pion energy response using data from the NOvA Test Beam experiment. The NOvA Test Beam experiment, deployed at Fermilab, uses a scaled-down 30-ton NOvA detector to analyze tagged beamline particles. The beamline can select and identify electrons, muons, pions, kaons, and protons with momenta ranging from 0.4 to 1.4 GeV/c. Pions are an important component of the hadronic system in neutrino interactions, and understanding how the detector responds to these particles is crucial for the validation of the simulation and the reduction of detector calibration uncertainties, which remain one of the largest systematic uncertainties in NOvA analyses.

Beam-water Interaction System for PFAS Treatment

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent environmental contaminants that resist conventional water treatment due to the strength of their carbon fluorine bonds. Electron-beam irradiation has shown potential for PFAS degradation; however, its effectiveness is limited by shallow energy penetration, restricting treatment to the upper region of the water surface. This project addresses this limitation through the design of a compact mixing chamber and recirculation system to enhance surface renewal and improve treatment efficiency. The system, constrained to approximately 10 cm 20 cm 20 cm, was developed using computer-aided design, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and MATLAB-based hydraulic analysis to evaluate flow behavior, head loss, and pump compatibility. A perforated-baffle geometry and controlled flow range of 1 3 GPM were implemented to promote uniform mixing while maintaining a stable free surface for electron-beam exposure. Modeling results indicate improved flow distribution and reduced dead zones, supporting more consistent interaction between contaminated water and the beam. The final design enhances hydrodynamic performance within system constraints, contributing to scalable electron-beam water treatment technologies for improved PFAS degradation.

Perspectives on the generation of electron beams from plasma-based accelerators and their near and long term applications

This article first gives the authors' perspectives on how the field of plasma-based acceleration (PBA) developed and how the current experiments, theory, and simulations are motivated by long term applications of PBA to a future linear collider and an x-ray free electron laser. Here, we then focus on some early applications that will likely emerge from PBA research such as electron beam radiotherapy, directional but incoherent x-ray beams for science and technology, near single cycle continuously tunable infrared pulses for spectroscopy, and non-perturbative quantum electrodynamics enabled by PBA electron beams. In our opinion, these near term applications could be developed within the next decade with a concerted effort by the community.

Beam delivery and final focus systems for multi-TeV advanced linear colliders

The Beam Delivery System (BDS) is a critical component of a high-energy linear collider. It transports the beam from the accelerator and brings it to a focus at the Interaction Point. The BDS system includes diagnostic sections for measuring the beam energy, emittance, and polarization, as well as collimators for machine protection. The length of the BDS increases with collision energy. Higher collision energies also require higher luminosities, and this is a significant constraint on the design for energy-frontier machines. Here, we review BDS designs based on traditional quadrupole magnets and examine the challenges involved in extending these to the Multi-TeV regime consistent with requirements for advanced accelerator concepts.

Multi-beam operation of LANSCE accelerator facility

The Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) accelerator facility has been in operation for 50 years performing important scientific support for national security. The unique feature of the LANSCE accelerator facility is multi-beam operation, delivering beams to five experimental areas. The near-term plans are to replace obsolete and almost end-of-life systems of the LANSCE linear accelerator with a modern 100-MeV Front End with significant improvement in beam quality. This paper summarizes experimental results obtained during the operation of the LANSCE accelerator facility and considers plans to expand the performance of the accelerator for near- and long-term operations.
