Aerogel Antennas Communications Study Using Error Vector Magnitude Measurements

This paper discusses an aerogel antennas communication study using error vector magnitude (EVM) measurements. The study was performed using 4x2 element polyimide (PI) aerogel-based phased arrays designed for operation at 5 GHz as transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) antennas separated by a line of sight (LOS) distance of 8.5 meters. The results of the EVM measurements demonstrate that polyimide aerogel antennas work appropriately to support digital communication links with typically used modulation schemes such as QPSK and pi/4 DQPSK. As such, PI aerogel antennas with higher gain, larger bandwidth and lower mass than typically used microwave laminates could be suitable to enable aerospace-to-ground communication links with enough channel capacity to support voice, data and video links from cubesats, unmanned air vehicles (UAV), and commercial aircraft.

Terminal Area Test Vector Development

This presentation provides an overview of work being done to develop test vectors for the terminal area, in coordination with RTCA Special Committee 228, an organization developing the Minimum Operational Performance Standards (MOPS) for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Detect and Avoid (DAA) systems. The work leverages existing encounter data to develop a set of encounters to be used to define and refine both performance-based and functionally-based terminal area MOPS requirements. The encounter set would be used across various organizations supporting MOPS terminal area requirements development to provide some level of consistency in terms of terminal area assumptions. The work will investigate other potentially applicable data sets and make any similarly needed adjustments to arrive at a consolidated set of terminal area encounters.

Impacts of Hybrid Parallelism and Vectorization on the Performance of Newton-Krylov Methods in Computational Aerodynamics

Finding the numerical solution of moderate and high-fidelity aerodynamics problems on modern computer architectures involves, 1) decomposing the domain into smaller regions of nearly equal size, and 2) allocating computational resources for calculations on each domain and communication between domains. Modern computer clusters are composed from hierarchies of processing, memory, and communication resources with varying capabilities and latencies. This paper focuses on the combination of domain decomposition provided by ParMETIS [1]and Newton-Krylov Methods [2–5] for the solution of Computational Aerodynamics problems of interest to NASA. Herein, trade-offs encountered when mapping aerodynamics problems to modern computer architectures are explored through examples and discussions of trade-offs in parallelism from MPI [6], Open MP [7], and vectorization as partition sizes and computational resources are varied. An example of the impact that domain decomposition and MPI+OpenMPresource allocation can have on an adjoint calculation is presented in this abstract. The full paper will include more detailed examples, discussions of difficulties and potential methods to overcome them, and topics identified for future study.

Adaptive Learning for Reliability Analysis using Support Vector Machines

A novel algorithm is presented for adaptive learning of an unknown function that separates two regions of a domain. In the context of reliability analysis these two regions represent the failure domain, where a set of constraints or requirements are violated, and a safe domain where they are satisfied. The Limit State Function (LSF) separates these two regions. Evaluating the constraints for a given parameter point requires the evaluation of a computational model that may well be expensive. For this reason we wish to construct a meta-model that can estimate the LSFas accurately as possible, using only a limited amount of training data. This work presents an adaptive strategy employing a Support Vector Machine (SVM) as a meta-model to provide a semi-algebraic approximation of the LSF.We describe an optimization process that is used to select informative parameter points to add to training data at each iteration to improve the accuracy of this approximation. A formulation is introduced for bounding the predictions of the meta-model; in this way we seek to incorporate this aspect of Gaussian Process Models (GPMs) within anSVM meta-model. Finally, we apply our algorithm to two benchmark test cases, demonstrating performance that is comparable with, if not superior, to a standard technique for reliability analysis that employs GPMs

Assessment of Geo-Kompsat-2A Atmospheric Motion Vector Data and Its Assimilation Impact in the GEOS Atmospheric Data Assimilation System

Korea’s second geostationary meteorological satellite, Geo-Kompsat-2A (Geostationary-Korean Multi-Purpose Satellite-2A, GK2A), was successfully launched on 4 December 2018. GK2Agenerates Atmospheric Motion Vectors (AMVs) every 10 min in the full disk area. This data hasbeen disseminated via Global Telecommunication System (GTS) since 25 October 2019. This articleevaluates the quality of GK2A AMVs in the Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) atmosphericdata assimilation system (ADAS). The data show slow wind speed biases at 200–300 hPa and 600–800hPa in the northern and southern hemispheres. These biases are caused by observation heightassignment errors near jet streams. The Equivalent Blackbody Temperature (EBBT) method of GK2Atends to assign clouds at higher altitude, which mainly causes slow wind speed biases, especially inthe lower atmosphere. The IR/WV intercept method of GK2A assigns clouds slightly lower in theatmospheric layers below the altitude of 400 hPa, which causes positive biases. Quality control (QC)criteria to select the most suitable GK2A AMV data for assimilation are presented based on thesequality assessments. A new QC criterion utilizing height errors within the GEOS ADAS is introducedto exclude data with slow wind speed biases and large errors. GEOS forecast accuracy is slightlyimproved after assimilating GK2A AMVs along with other conventional, radiance, and satellitewinds which include AMVs made by the Himawari-8 satellite in nearly the same observational areaof GK2A. Additionally, the present work shows that GEOS forecasts can be significantly improved, especially in the tropics and southern hemisphere after assimilating GK2A data in the absence ofHimawari-8 AMVs. This study demonstrates that GK2A AMV data is a valuable data source toenhance the robustness of GEOS ADAS.

Multi-Kernel Adaptive Support Vector Machine for Scalable Predictive Maintenance

Application of data-driven solutions across an industry is challenging, since the data are often stored locally, and increasing privacy and security concerns restrict access to the data. In addition, it is highly unlikely that all potential data patterns are captured in a single data source. Because it is highly unlikely that all potential data patterns are captured in a single data source, machine learning (ML) models developed from a single source cannot be robust enough. An alternative is to train the ML model at each source and develop a distributed knowledge discovery and aggregation approach to build global knowledge. In this paper, we develop and demonstrate a distributed ML model, federated transfer learning (FTL), using a multi-kernel-based adaptive support vector machine (MK-A-SVM). For federated learning (FL), the multi-kernel (MK) approach enables feature-specific model aggregation under data heterogeneity; whereas for transfer learning (TL) the adaptive model enables utilization of an aggregated model from a different task. The proposed approach is validated using nuclear power plant (NPP) vertical motor-driven pump data to predict the health condition of vertical motor-driven pumps as an anomaly detection. The efficiency of the proposed approach is also quantified and compared with neural network.

Search for Higgs boson production in association with a high-energy photon via vector-boson fusion with decay into bottom quark pairs at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search is presented for the production of the Standard Model Higgs boson in association with a high-energy photon. With a focus on the vector-boson fusion process and the dominant Higgs boson decay into b-quark pairs, the search benefits from a large reduction of multijet background compared to more inclusive searches. Results are reported from the analysis of 132 fb –1 of pp collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measured Higgs boson signal yield in this final-state signature is 1.3 ± 1.0 times the Standard Model prediction. The observed significance of the Higgs boson signal above the background is 1.3 standard deviations, compared to an expected significance of 1.0 standard deviations.

Linearizing the BPS equations with vector and tensor multiplets

We analyse the BPS equations of N = (1, 0) supergravity theory in six dimensions coupled to a vector and tensor multiplet. We show how these BPS equations can be reduced to a set of linear differential equations. This system is triangular in that each layer of equations, while linear, is quadratically sourced by the solutions of the previous layers. We examine several explicit examples and discuss the construction of new families of microstate geometries. We expect that the result presented here will open up new branches of superstrata in which the momentum is encoded in a new class of charge carriers.

Erratum to: Search for the HH → $ b\overline{b}b\overline{b} $ process via vector-boson fusion production using proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

One correction is noted for the paper. A wrong cross-section was used for the theory prediction in figure 6 due to not taking into account the VHH contamination properly in the rescaling formula for the signal samples. The change in the theory prediction leads to stricter exclusion limits on the di-vector-boson–di-Higgs-boson coupling modifier κ 2V . The observed excluded region corresponds to κ 2V < –0.43 and κ 2V > 2.56, while the expected exclusion is κ 2V < –0.55 and κ 2V > 2.72. Erratum JHEP 01 (2021) 145 fixed the description in the text but contains the uncorrected figure. The correct figure is shown in the new erratum.

Coherent photoproduction of ρ0 vector mesons in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at $ \sqrt{{\mathrm{s}}_{\mathrm{NN}}} $ = 5.02 TeV

Cross sections for the coherent photoproduction of ρ0 vector mesons in ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at $ \sqrt{{\mathrm{s}}_{\mathrm{NN}}} $ = 5.02 TeV are reported. The measurements, which rely on the π+π− decay channel, are presented in three regions of rapidity covering the range |y| < 0.8. For each rapidity interval, cross sections are shown for different nuclear-breakup classes defined according to the presence of neutrons measured in the zero-degree calorimeters. The results are compared with predictions based on different models of nuclear shadowing. Finally, the observation of a coherently produced resonance-like structure with a mass around 1.7 GeV/c2 and a width of about 140 MeV/c2 is reported and compared with similar observations from other experiments.

Universality between vector-like and chiral quiver gauge theories: anomalies and domain walls

We study low-energy dynamics of [SU($\textit{N}$)]$^K$ chiral quiver gauge theories in connection with $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory, and quantum chromodynamics with bi-fundamental fermions (QCD(BF)). These theories can be obtained by $\mathbb Z_K$ orbifold projections of $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 SU($\textit{N K}$) SYM theory, but the perturbative planar equivalence does not extend nonperturbatively for $\textit{K}$ ≥ 3. In order to study low-energy behaviors, we analyze these systems using ’t Hooft anomaly matching and reliable semiclassics on $\mathbb R^3 × S^1$. Thanks to ’t Hooft anomaly that involves 1-form center symmetry and discrete chiral symmetry, we predict that chiral symmetry must be spontaneously broken in the confinement phase, and there exist $\textit{N}$ vacua. Theories with even $\textit{K}$ possess a physical θ angle despite the presence of massless fermions, and we further predict the $\textit{N}$-branch structure associated with it; the number of vacua is enhanced to 2$\textit{N}$ at θ = π due to spontaneous $\textit{C P}$ breaking. Both of these predictions are explicitly confirmed by reliable semiclassics on $\mathbb R^3 × S^1$ with the double-trace deformation. Symmetry and anomaly of odd-$\textit{K}$ theories are the same as those of the $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 SYM, and the ones of even-$\textit{K}$ theories are same as those of QCD(BF). We unveil why there exists universality between vector-like and chiral quiver theories, and conjecture that their ground states can be continuously deformed without quantum phase transitions. We briefly discuss anomaly inflow on the domain walls connecting the vacua of the theory and possible anomaly matching scenarios.

Search for lepton-flavor-violating τ decays into a lepton and a vector meson using the full Belle data sample

Charged-lepton-flavor-violation is predicted in several new physics scenarios. We update the analysis of τ lepton decays into a light charged lepton (ℓ = e ± or μ ± ) and a vector meson (V 0 = ρ 0 , Φ, ω, K *0 , or $\overline{K}$ *0 ) using 980 fb -1 of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB collider. No significant excess of such signal events is observed, and thus 90% credibility level upper limits are set on the τ → ℓV 0 branching fractions in the range of (1.7–4.3) × 10 -8 . These limits are improved by 30% on average from the previous results.

Searches for additional Higgs bosons and for vector leptoquarks in $ττ$ final states in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Three searches are presented for signatures of physics beyond the standard model (SM) in $ττ$ final states in proton-proton collisions at the LHC, using a data sample collected with the CMS detector at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 . Upper limits at 95% confidence level (CL) are set on the products of the branching fraction for the decay into $τ$ leptons and the cross sections for the production of a new boson $\phi$, in addition to the H(125) boson, via gluon fusion (gg$\phi$) or in association with b quarks, ranging from $\mathcal{O}$(10 pb) for a mass of 60 GeV to 0.3 fb for a mass of 3.5 TeV each. The data reveal two excesses for gg$\phi$ production with local $p$-values equivalent to about three standard deviations at m $\phi$ = 0.1 and 1.2 TeV. In a search for $t$-channel exchange of a vector leptoquark U 1 , 95% CL upper limits are set on the dimensionless U 1 leptoquark coupling to quarks and $τ$ leptons ranging from 1 for a mass of 1 TeV to 6 for a mass of 5 TeV, depending on the scenario. In the interpretations of the $M^{125}_{h}$ and $M^{125}_{h,EFT}$ minimal supersymmetric SM benchmark scenarios, additional Higgs bosons with masses below 350 GeV are excluded at 95% CL.

Measurements of the production cross-sections of a Higgs boson in association with a vector boson and decaying into WW * with the ATLAS detector at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Measurements of the total and differential Higgs boson production cross-sections, via WH and ZH associated production using H → WW* → ℓνℓν and H → WW* → ℓνjj decays, are presented. The analysis uses proton-proton events delivered by the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector between 2015 and 2018. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb −1 . The sum of the WH and ZH cross-sections times the H → WW* branching fraction is measured to be ${0.44}_{-0.09}^{+0.10}$ (stat.)$_{-0.05}^{+0.06}$ (syst.) pb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction. Higgs boson production is further characterised through measurements of the differential cross-section as a function of the transverse momentum of the vector boson and in the framework of Simplified Template Cross-Sections.

Search for a vector-like quark T' → tH via the diphoton decay mode of the Higgs boson in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for the electroweak production of a vector-like quark T', decaying to a top quark and a Higgs boson is presented. The search is based on a sample of proton-proton collision events recorded at the LHC at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{–1}$. This is the first T' search that exploits the Higgs boson decay to a pair of photons. For narrow isospin singlet T' states with masses up to 1.1 TeV, the excellent diphoton invariant mass resolution of 1–2% results in an increased sensitivity compared to previous searches based on the same production mechanism. The electroweak production of a T' quark with mass up to 960 GeV is excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming a coupling strength κ$_{T}$ = 0.25 and a relative decay width Γ/M$_{T'}$< 5%.

Probing the Higgs boson CP properties in vector-boson fusion production in the H → τ + τ − channel with the ATLAS detector

The CP properties of the Higgs boson are studied in the vector-boson fusion production mode. The analysis exploits the decay mode of the Higgs boson into two τ-leptons using 140 fb −1 of proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Results are obtained using the Optimal Observable method. CP-violating interactions between the Higgs boson and electroweak gauge bosons are considered in the effective field theory framework, with the interaction strength described in the HISZ basis by $\tilde{d}$, and in the Warsaw basis by c H$\tilde{W}$ , c H$\tilde{B}$ , and c H$\tilde{W}$B . No deviations relative to the Standard Model are observed, and limits are obtained on the strength parameters. The $\tilde{d}$ parameter is constrained to the interval [−0.012, 0.044] at the 95% confidence level while c H$\tilde{W}$ is constrained to [−0.24, 0.83], when considering both linear and quadratic effects of physics beyond the Standard Model.

A comparative study of Higgs boson production from vector-boson fusion

The data taken in Run II at the Large Hadron Collider have started to probe Higgs boson production at high transverse momentum. Future data will provide a large sample of events with boosted Higgs boson topologies, allowing for a detailed understanding of electroweak Higgs boson plus two-jet production, and in particular the vector-boson fusion mode (VBF). We perform a detailed comparison of precision calculations for Higgs boson production in this channel, with particular emphasis on large Higgs boson transverse momenta, and on the jet radius dependence of the cross section. We study fixed-order predictions at next-to-leading order and next-to-next-to-leading order QCD, and compare the results to NLO plus parton shower (NLOPS) matched calculations. The impact of the NNLO corrections on the central predictions is mild, with inclusive scale uncertainties of the order of a few percent, which can increase with the imposition of kinematic cuts. We find good agreement between the fixed-order and matched calculations in non-Sudakov regions, and the various NLOPS predictions also agree well in the Sudakov regime. We analyze backgrounds to VBF Higgs boson production stemming from associated production, and from gluon-gluon fusion. At high Higgs boson transverse momenta, the Δy$_{jj}$ and/or m$_{jj}$ cuts typically used to enhance the VBF signal over background lead to a reduced efficiency. We examine this effect as a function of the jet radius and using different definitions of the tagging jets. QCD radiative corrections increase for all Higgs production modes with increasing Higgs boson p$_{T}$, but the proportionately larger increase in the gluon fusion channel results in a decrease of the gluon-gluon fusion background to electroweak Higgs plus two jet production upon requiring exclusive two-jet topologies. We study this effect in detail and contrast in particular a central jet veto with a global jet multiplicity requirement.
