Towards the Development of Molten Salt Reactor Multiphysics Modeling Capabilities: Depletion, Thermochemistry, Reactor Dynamics, and Species Tracking

This report documents the simulation and modeling work performed under the Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) program, utilizing the tools and codes developed under the program. The focus in this Fiscal Year (FY) is on the depletion, thermochemistry, reactor dynamics, and species transport in MSRs. The fission products travelling in the entire primary loop is unique in MSRs. There are many physical/chemical mechanisms that can significantly affect the fission products concentration in the fuel salt, e.g., diffusion into gas bubbles, diffusion in the core moderators, deposition on the surface of structures/pipes, etc. The fission product concentration in the fuel salt can potentially affect the neutronics, system dynamics, chemical potentials, etc., so accurately predicting the fission products distribution in the primary loop is important. Under the main objective, different activities are pursued to assess the NEAMS tools applicability for a variety of areas on species transport, including the depletion analyses using Griffin (fission product source), the redox potential assessment at different depletion points, the assessment of xenon transport effect on the neutronics and reactor dynamics, a survey of correlations for calculating the mass transfer coefficient of different fission products, etc.

TRACKING LIGNOCELLULOSIC BREAKDOWN BY ANAEROBIC FUNGI AND FUNGAL CELLULOSOMES

Anaerobic fungi degrade plant biomass through invasive, filamentous growth, and the secretion of multi-protein biomass-degrading complexes called fungal cellulosomes. This project developed new tools for anaerobic, non-destructive, real-time imaging of cellulosomes across spatial and temporal scales. Novel nanobody tools were synthesized and deployed to image native fungal cellulosomes. Antibodies raised against key fungal cellulosome components were also used to define the localization patterns of cellulosomes in mature fungal mats vs. fungal zoospores, and revealed direct connections between cellular life stage progression and the regulation of cellulosome production. New procedures were developed to purify native cellulosomes and study their morphology and sub-structures, and genetic engineering tools were also developed and applied to anaerobic fungi to advance in vivo labeling capabilities. A cryoEM structure of a native fungal cellulosome was achieved, as well as a proof of concept for transformation of fungi with flavin-based anaerobic reporter proteins for in vivo labeling of cellulosome components.

Graph-Learning-Assisted State and Event Tracking for Solar-Penetrated Power Grids with Heterogeneous Data Sources

Unlike transmission systems, distribution systems do not typically contain sufficient metering to enable real-time state estimation. The lack of sufficient real-time measurements prohibits accurate and timely monitoring of the state of distribution systems. As a result, control and optimal operation of distribution systems, especially those containing large numbers of renewable generation units are not possible without proper data and information about the current state of the system. The main motivation of this project is to address this shortcoming by developing an approach which provides “predicted” real-time measurements so that they can be used to execute a distribution system state estimator. Thus, the objective of the project is to make the distribution systems fully observable, such that the hosting capacity for solar generation can be accurately estimated, and unnecessary solar curtailments can be avoided. In order to accomplish this goal, the project investigated the use of a grid-model-informed machine learning (ML) tool which integrates heterogeneous data streams obtained from AMI meters, SCADA as well as PMU measurements and created synchronous measurement snapshots for the state estimator (SE); and developed a hybrid robust SE which provides not only accurate state estimates but also real-time feedback for the ML model refinement.

Partial Support of the Fast-Track Consensus Study on Foundational Research Gaps and Future Directions for Digital Twins (Final Report)

This study from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine was launched to explore the foundational research gaps and opportunities for digital twins. As part of the information gathering process, the committee organized three targeted workshops—in engineering, climate sciences, and biomedical sciences—to better understand domain-specific nuances and barriers to developing digital twins. These sessions enabled cross-sector experts to surface field-specific needs, challenges, and open questions related to digital twins. Thousands of participants across multiple domains engaged in the discussions, which workshops were summarized in three separate Proceedings-in-Brief.

Expanding Activity Allocation Models to Daily Activities: Tracking Simulated Agent Trips to Exercise Locations in Clarksville, TN

Exercise facilities have been proven to have numerous physical, mental, and psychological benefits, yet exercise facilities are still inaccessible to a large portion of the population. This study serves to explore the accessibility of fitness centres through geographical, demographic, and temporal lenses through an expansion of the UrbanPop framework that seeks to allocate simulated agents to fitness centres in the Clarksville metro to explore the effects of travel distances on different demographics throughout the week. Findings indicate that senior and retired demographics consistently travel longer distances to exercise in the larger Clarksville area, likely due to tendencies to live further from the center of the metropolitan area. Furthermore, all demographics tend to travel further distances to exercise on the weekends rather than the weekdays, indicating that travel distance can affect likelihood of agents to travel, especially on weekdays when many agents are in the workforce or participating in schooling.

Impact of a track trigger at a multi-TeV muon collider

In the panorama of future particle accelerators, the Muon Collider seems to be the best choice for several reasons that will be explored in section 1.2. The main challenge is represented by the instability of the muons. At the desired instantaneous luminosities, an intense flow of secondary and tertiary particles from the interactions of the beam decay products with the machine elements reaches the detector, compromising its performance. Several studies are currently underway to mitigate the background and to have an efficient trigger. My work represents a first step towards understanding the basic characteristics of a trigger selection, which will subsequently guide the design of the trigger system. With this aim I produced and analyzed Higgs and di-Higgs signals with MadGraph and CERN-ROOT. In first section there is an introduction to Muon Collider, a brief history, a discussion of its benefits, a description of the detector and of the effects of the Beam Induced Background. Several operating center-of-mass energies are possible for this machine, in this report a center-of-mass of 3 TeV is assumed. Then I describe the event generation process. Finally I describe the entire analysis, in particular I analyzed the efficiency and the number of events for each process.

Tracking carbon dioxide in the Southern Ocean (Final Technical Report)

We investigated the discrepancy in observed and modeled Southern Ocean carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) absorption through the lens of the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM), leveraging recent and upcoming E3SM development advances to simulate Lagrangian Biogeochemical-Argo floats. E3SM output, together with observational data streams and output from the evolving CMIP6 archive, are being used to study the spatiotemporal bias in modeled Southern Ocean CO 2 flux.
