Upper stages utilizing electric propulsion

The payload characteristics of geocentric missions which utilize electron bombardment ion thruster systems are discussed. A baseline LEO to GEO orbit transfer mission was selected to describe the payload capabilities. The impacts on payloads of both mission parameters and electric propulsion technology options were evaluated. The characteristics of the electric propulsion thrust system and the power requirements were specified in order to predict payload mass. This was completed by utilizing a previously developed methodology which provides a detailed thrust system description after the final mass on orbit, the thrusting time, and the specific impulse are specified. The impact on payloads of total mass in LEO, thrusting time, propellant type, specific impulse, and power source characteristics was evaluated.

Coal gasification systems engineering and analysis, volume 2

The major design related features of each generic plant system were characterized in a catalog. Based on the catalog and requirements data, approximately 17 designs and cost estimates were developed for MBG and alternate products. A series of generic trade studies was conducted to support all of the design studies. A set of cost and programmatic analyses were conducted to supplement the designs. The cost methodology employed for the design and sensitivity studies was documented and implemented in a computer program. Plant design and construction schedules were developed for the K-T, Texaco, and B&W MBG plant designs. A generic work breakdown structure was prepared, based on the K-T design, to coincide with TVA's planned management approach. An extensive set of cost sensitivity analyses was completed for K-T, Texaco, and B&W design. Product price competitiveness was evaluated for MBG and the alternate products. A draft management policy and procedures manual was evaluated. A supporting technology development plan was developed to address high technology risk issues. The issues were identified and ranked in terms of importance and tractability, and a plan developed for obtaining data or developing technology required to mitigate the risk.

The OSS-1 mission - Lessons learned in developing and integrating experiments

Experience gained in the development and integration of experiments for the OSS-1 payload to be carried on board the Space Shuttle for the characterization of the effects of the STS environment on future scientific missions is related. Following a review of mission objectives, including the demonstration of Shuttle research capabilities and the evaluation of new technology, the experiments and mission operations to be performed are outlined, and mission support requirements are indicated. The conduct of mission management by the Goddard Space Flight Center, which required interfacing with a large number of other agencies, centers, and investigators and contractors and an enormous amount of formal documentation, is then examined, with consideration given to the management of mechanical, electrical, and thermal systems development mock-up construction, EMI/EMC and acoustic testing, the formation of an integration and test team, and trade-offs between cost, schedule and performance. It is concluded that although work still remains to be done, significant progress has been made in ensuring that the STS is a viable system for space exploration.

Performance of large inert-gas thrusters

The performance of large inert-gas thrusters is predicted based on present knowledge of ion optics performance and discharge chamber operation. Calculated performance data are given for argon and xenon propellants. The effect of varying propellant utilization and thruster diameter is discussed and the optimum choice of beam diameter for very large systems is indicated for low, intermediate, and high specific impulses. Optimum discharge chamber depths are also specified. Although detailed design considerations may modify the predictions, the general trends indicated should still be useful for directing future technology efforts and evaluating mission studies involving large thrusters.

Solar sail Engineering Development Mission

Since photons have momentum, a useful force can be obtained by reflecting sunlight off of a large, low mass surface (most likely a very thin metal-coated plastic film) and robbing the light of some of its momentum. A solar sail Engineering Development Mission (EDM) is currently being planned by the World Space Foundation for the purpose of demonstrating and evaluating solar sailing technology and to gain experience in the design and operation of a spacecraft propelled by sunlight. The present plan is for the EDM spacecraft to be launched (sail stowed) in a spin-stabilized configuration into an initial elliptical orbit with an apogee of 36,000 km and a perigee of a few hundred kilometers. The spacecraft will then use its own chemical propulsion system to raise the perigee to at least 1,200 km. The deployed sail will have an area of 880 sq m and generate a solar force of about 0.007 N.

Automated Power Systems Management (APSM)

A breadboard power system incorporating autonomous functions of monitoring, fault detection and recovery, command and control was developed, tested and evaluated to demonstrate technology feasibility. Autonomous functions including switching of redundant power processing elements, individual load fault removal, and battery charge/discharge control were implemented by means of a distributed microcomputer system within the power subsystem. Three local microcomputers provide the monitoring, control and command function interfaces between the central power subsystem microcomputer and the power sources, power processing and power distribution elements. The central microcomputer is the interface between the local microcomputers and the spacecraft central computer or ground test equipment.

The development of a generalized advanced propeller analysis system

A Generalized Advanced Propeller Analysis System (GAPAS) is being developed to provide both an optimized design and a performance evaluation capability. The technology areas incorporated in GAPAS include propeller aerodynamic performance, airfoil loading, acoustics, structural analysis and aeroelasticity. The propeller analyses include the most advanced, fully-developed technologies in a modular but unified system. The program will treat multi-bladed propellers having straight or swept blades operating on aircraft at speeds to Mach 0.8 and altitudes to 40,000 feet. The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, it will introduce the GAPAS program to the general industry; and second, since the GAPAS program will be made available for general applications, it is also intended to be a status report on the development stage of the program.

The Pilot Land Data System: Report of the Program Planning Workshops

An advisory report to be used by NASA in developing a program plan for a Pilot Land Data System (PLDS) was developed. The purpose of the PLDS is to improve the ability of NASA and NASA sponsored researchers to conduct land-related research. The goal of the planning workshops was to provide and coordinate planning and concept development between the land related science and computer science disciplines, to discuss the architecture of the PLDs, requirements for information science technology, and system evaluation. The findings and recommendations of the Working Group are presented. The pilot program establishes a limited scale distributed information system to explore scientific, technical, and management approaches to satisfying the needs of the land science community. The PLDS paves the way for a land data system to improve data access, processing, transfer, and analysis, which land sciences information synthesis occurs on a scale not previously permitted because of limits to data assembly and access.
