Magnetic penetration depth of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) thin films determined by the power transmission method

A power transmission measurement technique was used to determine the magnetic penetration depth (lambda) of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) superconducting thin films on LaAlO3 within the 26.5 to 40.0 GHz frequency range, and at temperatures from 20 to 300 K. Values of lambda ranging from 1100 to 2500 A were obtained at low temperatures. The anisotropy of lambda was determined from measurements of c-axis and a-axis oriented films. An estimate of the intrinsic value of lambda of 90 +/- 30 nm was obtained from the dependence of lambda on film thickness. The advantage of this technique is that it allows lambda to be determined nondestructively.

CONCAP 4: A Complex Autonomous Payload (CAP) for growing organic thin films in microgravity

A GAS facility has been developed for carrying out low temperature experiments. The arrangement being used on CONCAP IV-01 is designed for thin film growth in microgravity and can process up to twelve samples per mission. The nonlinear optical oven hardware can also be made suitable for other low temperature applications, such as gradient freeze and solution growth of crystals.

CVD Of Thin Films From Single Organometallic Precursors

Method of forming thin inorganic films involves chemical vapor deposition (CVD) from single organometallic precursors. No toxic constituents, minimizes impurities, and yields films having substantially uniform crystal structure and composition. Especially suitable for depositing high-quality passivating or buffer layers of GaS on GaAs semiconductor substrates. Also applicable to formation of high-quality films for purposes other than buffering or passivation, and to different materials in which another element from same group in periodic table of elements substituted for all or portion of each element in GaS/GaAs system.

Characterization of Thin Film Polymers Through Dynamic Mechanical Analysis and Permeation

Thin polymer films are being considered, as candidate materials to augment the permeation resistance of cryogenic hydrogen fuel tanks such as would be required for future reusable launch vehicles. To evaluate performance of candidate films after environmental exposure, an experimental study was performed to measure the thermal/mechanical and permeation performance of six, commercial-grade materials. Dynamic storage modulus, as measured by Dynamic Mechanical Analysis, was found over a range of temperatures. Permeability, as measured by helium gas diffusion, was found at room temperature. Test data was correlated with respect to film type and pre-test exposure to moisture, elevated temperature, and cryogenic temperature. Results indicated that the six films were comparable in performance and their resistance to environmental degradation.

Surface Areas and Morphology of Thin Ice Films

Thin ice films formed by deposition from the vapor phase in a fast flow-tube reactor have been used to simulate polar stratospheric cloud surfaces in order to obtain laboratory data on uptake and heterogeneous reaction rates. Surface areas are determined from BET (Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller) analysis of gas adsorption isotherms. The results for ices prepared at 196 K or 77 K are consistent with previous data on thicker ice films. Environmental scanning electron microscopy is used to obtain particle sizes and shapes, and to investigate the morphology of the ices on borosilicate or silicon windows. In addition, the uptake of HCI on ice films prepared at 196 K is investigated. The results suggest that the layer model we have previously developed for analysis of uptake and heterogeneous reaction rates on ice films is valid. Detailed information will be presented at the conference.

Magnetic flux penetration into superconducting thin films.

The quantum-interference technique developed by Meservey (1965) is used to measure directly the absolute value of the penetration depth in lead in tin superconducting thin films. The technique assumes that the change in phase of the superconducting wave function around any contour within the superconductor must be 2 pi n, where n is a nonnegative integer. Results show that the critical current of a superconducting interferometer with two parallel junctions is not strictly periodic in the applied magnetic flux with a period equal to the flux quantum because of the magnetic field dependence of the critical currents of the junctions.

Computer Controlled Magnetotransport Setup for the Characterization of Semiconductor Thin Films

We have considered a computer controlled magnetotransport setup using LabWindows environment. It allows for measurements of resistivity, Hall resistance, carrier concentration and charge mobility in semiconductor thin films using a van der Pauw configuration. The setup features an electromagnet (B = 0.7 Tesla) a 80486-DX 33 computer with a National Instrument AT-MIO 16 AD/DA and a GPIB interface board. A Keithely 224 current source and a Keithley 196 digital voltmeter were also used in the setup. Plans for the addition of capabilities to allow for magnetic field sweeping and the performance of measurements as a function of temperature will be presented.

Magnetic relaxation in the 110 K superconducting phase in Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O thin films

We have investigated the time dependence of remnant moment decay in a highly oriented, nearly single high T(sub c) phase Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O thin film. A strictly logarithmic time dependence was observed over a 20 K temperature range for observation intervals of 2000 seconds. The normalized decay rate exhibits a peak around 14 K and has a relatively weak magnetic field dependence. These data are then compared with existing data on the YBCO and Eu-based superconductors.

[Synthesis and Characterization of a Sugar Based Electrolyte for Thin-film Polymer Batteries]

The work performed during the current renewal period, March 1,1998 focused primarily on the synthesis and characterization of a sugar based electrolyte for thin-film polymer batteries. The initial phase of the project involved developing a suitable sugar to use as the monomer in the polymeric electrolyte synthesis. The monomer has been synthesized and characterized completely. Overall the yield of this material is high and it can be produced in relatively large quantity easily and in high purity. The scheme used for the preparation of the monomer is outlined along with pertinent yields.

Applications of thin film technology toward a low-mass solar power satellite

Previous concepts for solar power satellites have used conventional-technology photovoltaics and microwave tubes. The authors propose using thin film photovoltaics and an integrated solid state phased array to design an ultra-lightweight solar power satellite, resulting in a potential reduction in weight by a factor of ten to a hundred over conventional concepts for solar power satellites.

Metal-organic chemical vapour deposition of polycrystalline tetragonal indium sulphide (InS) thin films

The dimeric indium thiolate /(t Bu)2In(mu-S sup t Bu)/2 has been used as a single-source precursor for the MOCVD of InS thin films. The dimeric In2S2 core is proposed to account for the formation of the nonequilibrium high-pressure tetragonal phase in the deposited films. Analysis of the deposited films has been obtained by TEM, with associated energy-dispersive X-ray analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Coupling Between Microstrip Lines With Finite Width Ground Plane Embedded in Thin Film Circuits

Three-dimensional (3D) interconnects built upon multiple layers of polyimide are required for constructing 3D circuits on CMOS (low resistivity) Si wafers, GaAs, and ceramic substrates. Thin film microstrip lines (TFMS) with finite width ground planes embedded in the polyimide are often used. However, the closely spaced TFMS lines a r e susceptible to high levels of coupling, which degrades circuit performance. In this paper, Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) analysis and experimental measurements a r e used to show that the ground planes must be connected by via holes to reduce coupling in both the forward and backward directions. Furthermore, it is shown that coupled microstrip lines establish a slotline type mode between the two ground planes and a dielectric waveguide type mode, and that the via holes recommended here eliminate these two modes.
