Luna 16 - Some Li, K, Rb, Sr, Ba, rare-earth, Zr, and Hf concentrations.

Concentrations of Li, K, Rb, Sr, Na, rare-earths, Zr and Hf have been determined for some Luna 16 core materials by mass-spectrometric isotope-dilution. Two regolith fines samples from different depths in the core, and four rock-chips, including both igneous rocks and breccias, have similar trace-element concentrations. The Luna 16 materials have general lunar trace-element characteristics but differ from other returned lunar samples in a manner that suggests the presence of excess feldspar. Unless the Luna 16 igneous rocks are fused soils, they appear to represent either partial plagioclase cumulates or the least differentiated igneous material yet returned from the moon. The similarity in trace-element concentrations of the igneous rocks and the fines would then suggest largely local derivation of the Luna 16 regolith.

Partitioning of Eu and Sr between coexisting plagioclase and K-feldspar.

Minerals were separated by an EM approach and with the aid of liquids of great density. An analysis of K, Rb, Ca, Sr, Ha, and rare earth elements was conducted by means of a mass spectrometer isotope dilution technique. The behavior of the divalent europium ions during the partition process was found to be very similar to that of divalent strontium ions, taking into consideration data of the partition coefficients between coexisting feldspars in acidic rocks.

Rb-Sr systematics of Luna 20 and Apollo 16 samples.

For the soils of two lunar highland sites from which samples were returned by the Luna 20 probe and the Apollo 16 mission, Rb-Sr data are presented. For comparison, the results of some additional analyses of Apollo 15 soils are also given. All these soils indicate that an early lunar differentiation process occurred in the interval of 4.3-4.6 b.y. and resulted in the formation of a crust rich in K, Rb, U, and Th.

U-Th-Pb and Rb-Sr measurements on some Apollo 14 lunar samples.

The concentrations of selected elements and elemental ratios in some Apollo 14 samples are presented in a table. Another table shows the isotopic composition of lead and strontium in some Apollo 14 samples. Graphs are provided with lead isotope ratio plots and a strontium evolution diagram. Rb-Sr ages are discussed together with isochron age methods of U-Th-Pb, a primary Pb-Pb isochron, a secondary Pb-Pb isochron, U-Pb concordia age relations, and U-Th-Pb concordia relations. Breccias and some soil samples as well as a basalt sample give evidence of significant enrichment of lead relative to uranium and thorium billions of years ago at the Fra Mauro site.

Rb-Sr studies of lunar breccias and soils

Investigation results on the Rb-Sr systematics and K concentrations for two Apollo 14 breccias and several Apollo 15, 16, and 17 soils are reviewed. The reported results include the finding that plagioclase clasts from microbreccia fragments in Apollo 16 soil are distinctly too radiogenic to have been in equilibrium with the whole rock fragments 4 b.y. ago.

Rb-Sr age and content of potassium, rubidium strontium, barium, and rare earths in surface material from the Sea of Fertility

The Luna 16 automatic station returned from the Sea of Fertility a 35 cm long column of lunar surface material. 1 g of the Luna 16 lunar surface material, taken at a depth of 22 cm, consists of fine material: surface material and fine fragments of rocks from 1 to 4 mm in diameter. Analyses made on 17 mg of the fine lunar surface material are presented. The results obtained for the Luna 16 surface material are plotted on the diagram of the isotopic evolution of strontium and show that this surface material is most depleted of radiogenic Sr-87 of all the known lunar surface materials and that the point characterizing Lunar 16 lies somewhat to the right of the line corresponding to an age of 4.6 billion years.

Petrogenesis of lunar rocks: Rb-Sr constraints and lack of H2O

Rb and Sr isotopic data and other chemical data indicate major lunar differentiation at about 4.6 AE and very limited subsequent differentiation. The constraints of limited differentiation post 4.6 AE and the apparent lack of H2O on the moon, when applied to the derivation and petrogenesis of lunar samples, suggest the following: (1) soil samples, breccias, metaclastic rocks, and feldspathic basalts represent mixtures of repeatedly-modified clastic material, which was ultimately derived from materials formed during the about 4.6 AE differentiation; and (2) mare basalts crystallized from melts which formed by partial melting and, which developed without equilibration between the melt and crystalline residuum.

Rb-Sr age of lunar igneous rocks 62295 and 14310

Measurements of Rb-Sr ages of crystallization performed on igneous lunar highland rocks 62295 and 14310 are reported. Lunar sample 62295 is a mesostasis-rich spinel-troctolite very-high-alumina basalt exhibiting a variable igneous structure. Sample 14310 is a feldspathic KREEP-rich basalt. The determined ages probably date the cooling of shock melts.

Equilibration and ages - Rb-Sr studies of breccias 14321 and 15265

We have previously demonstrated that the Rb-Sr system of Fra Mauro breccia 14321 did not completely equilibrate at the time of assembly. Basalt and microbreccia clasts, with approximately the same internal isochron ages (about 4.0 b.y.) have distinctly different initial ratios. This result did not preclude the possibility that individual clast ages were reset by short range diffusion in a hot ejecta blanket. We now demonstrate that equilibration between basalt and adjacent microbreccia did not occur at about 4 b.y. on a 1 mm scale. The internal isochron ages of the clasts therefore probably date pre-assembly (possibly pre-Imbrium) magmatic and impact events. We also report the presence of a mare basalt clast in relatively KREEP-rich breccia 15265, indicating formation of such breccias after the basin-forming events.

Rb-Sr ages of the Archean rocks from the Vermilion district, northeastern Minnesota

The Vermilion district in Northeastern Minnesota is a classic example of a lower Precambrian greenstone-granite terrane in the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield. The present study presents new Rb-Sr isotopic data for the Ely Greenstone, the Newton Lake Formation, granitic pebbles that occur within the Ely Greenstone, a graywacke composite of the Knife Lake Group, and some Algoman granites whose data are complementary to those of Peterman et al. (1972). The isochron ages obtained are statistically indistinguishable and therefore cannot be used to resolve the timing of specific geologic events. Volcanic extrusion, granitic intrusion, and metamorphism are shown to be less contemporaneous events which probably took place within a time span of less than 50 m.y. A major conclusion is that a granitic basement probably did not underlie the Ely Greenstone.

Atmosphere, Magnetosphere and Plasmas in Space (AMPS). Spacelab payload definition study. Volume 7, book 3: Supporting Research and Technology (SR and T) report

The items identified as required to support the AMPS mission and requiring SR and T support and further work are: (1) a general purpose Experiment Pointing Mount; (2) a technique for measuring the attitude of the pallet-mounted or deployed experiments; (3) the development of a common optics cryogenically cooled interferometer spectrometer; (4) the development of a differential absorption lidar system for the measurement of ozone densitites in the earth's atmosphere; (5) the development of dc to dc power processors which are capable of converting energy stored in a capacitor system at 500 V to energy supplied to equipment operating at 40 kV and at 20 kW (eventually up to 100 kW); and (6) the development of a magnetic or possibly electrostatic deflection system capable of bending the beam of an electron accelerator. A data sheet is included for each item, briefly describing the background and need for each item, and the general objectives of the required development, and identifying the schedule requirements in support of the AMPS program.

Rb-Sr ages and isotopic systematics of some Serenitatis mare basalts

Rb/Sr isotopic data and internal isochron ages are presented for some mare basalts from the Taurus-Littrow region. It is found that in age and in trace- and major-element chemistry as well as in Rb-Sr isotopic systematics, the Serenitatis mare basalts closely resemble the low-K Tranquility basalts, suggesting that over a wide region on the moon volcanism occurred at a discrete period 3.7-3.8 AE ago.

Petrogenesis of lunar rocks: Rb-Sr constraints and lack of H2O

Rb and Sr isotopic data and other chemical data indicate major lunar differentiation at about 4.6 AE (AE = 10 to the 9th power years) and very limited subsequent differentiation. The constraints of limited differentiation after 4.6 AE and the apparent lack of H2O on the moon, when applied to the derivation and petrogenesis of lunar samples, suggest the following: (1) soil samples, breccias, metaclastic rocks, and feldspathic basalts represent mixtures of repeatedly modified clastic material, which was utimately derived from materials formed during the 4.6 AE differentiation; and (2) mare basalts crystallized from melts which formed by partial melting, and which developed without equilibrium between the melt and crystalline residuum.

Rb-Sr study of a lunar dunite and evidence for early lunar differentiates

An Rb-Sr study of Boulder 3 from Station 2 sampled during the Apollo 17 mission is reported. The investigated boulder is a metaclastic rock, inferred to have come from the South Massif, and contains a variety of lithic clasts. Since the rock type may be critical in understanding lunar differentiation processes, an extensive investigation was carried out of the dunite clast and other clasts as well as of the fine-grained matrix. The investigation had the purpose to define the age of crystallization of the dunite and to determine the extent to which later metamorphism of the host rock may have effected the isotopic systematics of this clast. The isochron determined yielded an age of 4.55 plus or minus 0.10 AE for the dunite. This result demonstrates that differentiation began close to the time of formation of the moon and that relics of this process are preserved.

Rare gases and Ca, Sr, and Ba in Apollo 17 drill-core fines

Trapped gas isotopic compositions and spallation gas concentrations as functions of depth in the Apollo 17 drill core were determined from mass spectrometer studies by means of correlation techniques. The distribution of He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe as well as Ca, Sr, and Ba was investigated, and rare-gas spallation and neutron capture profiles are compared with attention to proposed depositional models for the Taurus-Littrow regolith. The data exclude a sedimentation pattern similar to that found at the Apollo 15 site but are possibly compatible with long-term continuous accretion models or models of very recent rapid accumulation of regolith.

Ultra heavy cosmic ray measurements with a 6.6 sq m-sr electronic detector

A 6.6-sq m-sr electronic detector was employed on a 28-hour balloon flight to obtain abundances of nuclei of Z at least 30 in cosmic rays. A Zn abundance of Zn/Fe = (7 + or - 2) x 10 to the -4th is obtained. The abundances relative to iron of nuclei with Z between 30 and 40 are lower than in the solar-system abundances of Cameron (1973), but individual elements do seem to follow the trend of the solar system.

Experimental mineral/liquid partition coefficients of the rare earth elements /REE/, Sc and Sr for perovskite, spinel and melilite

Experimental determinations of the mineral/liquid partition coefficients of REE (La, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Yb and Lu), Sc and Sr are reported for the minerals perovskite, spinel and melilite in synthetic systems. Perovskite concentrates light REE with respect to the residual liquid but shows no preference for heavy REE. Spinel greatly discriminates against the incorporation of REE, especially light REE, into its crystal structure. The partition of REE into melilite from a silicate liquid is quite dependent upon both the bulk melt and melilite solid-solution (gehlenite and akermanite components) compositions. As such, melilite can be enriched in REE or will reject REE with corresponding strong negative or strong positive Eu anomalies, respectively.
