Fe-57 and Sn-119 Moessbauer study of La2CuO(4-y), YBa2Cu3O(7-y) and SmBa2Cu3O(7-y)

Moessbauer studies reveal antiferromagnetic order in doped La2CuO(4-7): at 77 K, H = 476 kOe at Fe-57 and H is less that 10 kOe at Sn-119. Split-source and conventional absorber experiments on RBa2Cu3O(7-y) (R = Y, Sm) are consistent with occupation of 3 sites by Fe-57, the relative population depending on sample preparation and Fe concentration.

Velocity-resolved far-infrared spectra of forbidden Fe II - Evidence for mixing and clumping in SN 1987A

The forbidden F II profiles at 18 and 26 micron from SN 1987A have been measured with a resolution of about 400 km/s. The central portion of each profile is well-fitted by a Gaussian with a FWHM of 2900 and 2500 km/s, respectively. The centroid velocity is redshifted relative to the LSR by 450 + or - 200 km/s at 18 microns and by 680 + or - 200 km/s at 26 microns. The integrated line fluxes alone imply a maximum expansion velocity of about 2000 km/s and a minimum expansion velocity much less than the maximum. A significant fraction of the iron has mixed with the overlying hydrogen regions. There is a high-velocity emission feature at about +3500 km/s relative to the main emission peak which contains about 3 percent of the total iron mass and has T about 2600 K. The measured 26 micron line flux corresponds to a total singly ionized iron mass of 0.026 solar. The line fluxes and profiles are inconsistent with a physically thin shell of gas and show that there is a wide range of expansion velocities for the iron.

A merger model for SN 1987 A

It is proposed that the progenitor of SN 1987A was the product of the merger of two binary components in a common envelope that formed as a result of a dynamically unstable mass-transfer phase. Two cases are considered, one in which the primary (presupernova) star is on the first red-giant branch, and one in which it is on the asymptotic giant branch, when the common-envelope phase commences. While in the first case the merger would always have been completed before the supernova event, it is possible in the second case that the supernova progenitor exploded while the stars were still in the process of spiraling into the center of the common envelope. It is shown how the latter scenario might lead to an exotic postsupernova binary with properties that could account for the 8 hr periodicity in the 2 kHz pulse frequency of the supernova pulsar (Kristian et al., 1989). It is also shown how both scenarios may explain all of the major observational features of this supernova event, including its most striking anomalies (particularly the blue color of the apparent progenitor Sk -69 deg 202).

Narrow circumstellar emission lines in SN 1987A

Low and high dispersion short wavelength prime (SWP) spectra of SN 1987A show that the supernova's progenitor was in a post red giant branch stage of evolution at the time of its demise in February 1987. The development of narrow high temperature emission lines of N 5, N 4, N 3, C 3, He 2 and O 3 were followed since May 1987. Observations through April 1990 are presented. The lines are interpreted as arising in a low density gas surrounding the supernova which was photoionized by the extreme UV pulse at shock breakout. In this picture, their temporal evolution is determined primarily by light travel time effects and recombination. Comparison of models of circumstellar environment with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) observations are discussed.

Directional solidification of Pb-Sn eutectics with vibration

Pb-Sn eutectic alloy was directionally solidified at 1.4 to 3.2 cm/hr with forced convection induced by axial vibration of the growth ampoule with a frequency of 10 to 40 Hz and an amplitude of 0.5 to 1.0 mm. To determine the exact growth rate, an interface demarcation technique was applied. The lamellar spacing was increased 10 to 40 percent in ingots solidified with vibration compared to those solidified without vibration. The number of grain boundaries was increased by vibration. The average intensity of convection in the melt under axial vibration of the ampoule was estimated by comparing the experimental results with a theoretical model.

Effect of grinding on the fatigue life of titanium alloy (5 Al-2.5 Sn) under dry and wet conditions

The principal factors in the performance of aerospace materials are strength-to-weight ratio, fatigue life, fracture toughness, survivability and, of course, reliability. Machining processes and, in particular, grinding under adverse conditions have been found to cause damage to surface integrity and affect the residual stress distribution in the surface and subsurface region. These effects have a direct bearing on the fatigue life. In this investigation the effects of grinding conditions on the fatigue life of Titanium 5 Al-2.5Sn were studied. This alloy is used in ground form in the manufacturing of some critical components in the space shuttle's main engine. It is essential that materials for such applications be properly characterized for use in severe service conditions. Flat sub-size specimens 0.1 inch thick were ground on a surface grinding machine equipped with a variable speed motor at speeds of 2000 to 6000 rpm using SiC wheels of grit sizes 60 and 120. The grinding parameters used in this investigation were chosen from a separate study. The ground specimens were then fatigued at a selected stress and the resulting lives were compared with that of the virgin material. The surfaces of the specimens were examined under a scanning electron microscope, and the roughness and hardness were measured using a standard profilometer and microhardness tester, respectively. The fatigue life of the ground specimens was found to decrease with the increase in speed for both dry and wet conditions. The fatigue life of specimens ground under wet conditions showed a significant increase at the wheel speed of 2000 rpm for both the grit sizes and thereafter decreased with increase profilometry, microhardness measurements and scanning electron microscopic examination.

Co-57 and Ti-44 production in SN 1987A

A survey of parameterized explosive silicon burning is carried out in order to limit the range of allowed masses of Co-57 produced by SN 1987A. The most likely value is between 0.5 and 2.5 times that implied by a solar ratio for Fe-57/Fe-56. Values more than four and less than one-third times the solar ratio would pose very severe problems for the theory of stellar nucleosynthesis, implying, for example, that Fe-56 was not the dominant iron group isotope or that no electron capture occurred during oxygen burning. Though dependent somewhat on the neutron excess, the Fe-57 yield is most sensitive to the occurrence of an alpha-rich freeze-out. An accurate measurement of the Fe-57 yield, as reflected observationally by the current abundance of radioactive Co-57, is thus an important constraint upon the supernova explosion mechanism. The abundance of Ti-44, another nucleus produced exclusively in the alpha-rich freeze-out, cannot be much greater than that implied by the solar ratio of Ca-44/Fe-56.

Hydrodynamical instabilities and mixing in SN 1987A - Two-dimensional simulations of the first 3 months

Results are presented from numerical simulations of the early stages of the explosion of SN 1987A. Using a two-dimensional cylindrical geometry version of a smooth particle hydrodynamics code, the explosion is followed for three months to investigate both the early hydrodynamical instabilities and the effect of the subsequent radioactive decay of Ni-56 and Co-56 with half-lives of 6.1 and 77.8 days, respectively. It is shown that the mixing induced by hydrodynamical instabilities occurring during the first few hours is substantially modified at later time by the radioactive decay of Ni-56 and Co-56. The inner cavity of the expanding supernova remnant fills up with nickel, its decay products thus forming a giant 'nickel bubble'. The peak velocity of the nickel increases by approximately 30 percent after the decays. While these results adequately model the core of the observed Fe line profiles, they fail to reproduce the high velocity wings of the spectra.

Origin of the burst of TeV gamma-rays from SN 1987 A

An electromagnetic origin of the TeV gamma-ray burst from SN 1987 A is proposed. The TeV gamma-rays result from inverse Compton scattering in the extreme Klein-Nishina limit of nuclear Co-56 gamma-ray lines and soft X-rays by monoenergetic TeV electrons. The model accounts for the observed time delay between the TeV burst and the peak X-ray intensity of about 3 days, and the different burst duration at TeV and X-ray energies.

Effect of grinding conditions on the fatigue life of titanium 5Al-2.5Sn alloy

An investigation into the effect of grinding conditions on the fatigue life of titanium 5Al-2.5Sn is presented. Damage to surface integrity and changes in the residual stresses distribution are studied to assess changes in fatigue life. A surface grinding machine, operating at speeds ranging from 2000 to 6000 fpm and using SiC wheels of grit sizes 60 and 120, was used to grind flat subsize specimens of 0.1-in. thickness. After grinding, the specimens were fatigued at a chosen stress and compared with the unadulterated material. A standard profilometer, a microhardness tester, and a scanning electron microscope were utilized to examine surface characteristics and measure roughness and hardness. Increased grinding speed in both wet and dry applications tended to decrease the fatigue life of the specimens. Fatigue life increased markedly at 2000 fpm under wet conditions, but then decreased at higher speeds. Grit size had no effect on the fatigue life.

The effect of weld porosity on the cryogenic fatigue strength of ELI grade Ti-5Al-2.5Sn

The effect of weld porosity on the fatigue strength of ELI grade Ti-5Al-2.5Sn at cryogenic temperature was determined. A series of high cycle fatigue (HCF) and tensile tests were performed at -320 F on specimens made from welded sheets of the material. All specimens were tested with weld beads intact and some amount of weld offset. Specimens containing porosity and control specimens containing no porosity were tested. Results indicate that for the weld configuration tested, the fatigue life of the material is not affected by the presence of spherical embedded pores.

Massive star evolution and SN 1987A

The evolution of massive stars through hydrogen and helium burning is addressed. A set of stellar evolutionary sequences for mass/solar mass of 15, 20, and 25, and metallicity of 0.002, 0.005, 0.007, 0.010, and 0.20 are presented; semiconvection is restricted to operating slower than the local thermal time scale. Using these sequences, simple models of the massive star content of the LMC are found to agree moderately well with the new observational data of Fitzpatrick and Garmany (1990). LMC supergiants were detected only in their postmain-sequence phases, so that 5-10 times more massive stars are there but not identified as such. It is argued that SN 1987A exhibits the normal evolution of a single star of about 20 solar mases having LMC abundances. Despite the variety of envelope behavior, the structure of the core at collapse is rather similar for the stars of a given mass. Variations due to different rates of mass loss are likely to be larger than those due to composition.

Hydrogen recombination at high optical depth and the spectrum of SN 1987A

A general theory is presented for hydrogen recombination line formation in an expanding medium in which some of the lines are optically thick. This theory is used to calculate the time evolution of the hydrogen lines of SN 1987A at t equal to or greater than 150 days, assuming that the supernova envelope is a homologously expanding uniform sphere. The theoretical luminosities and ratios of the recombination lines agree remarkably well with the observations. For the first 2 yr, the supernova envelope is optically thick to Balmer continuum. For t equal to or less than 400 days, hydrogen is ionized primarily from the n = 2 level by Balmer continuum photons, which are provided partly by the two-photon decay of the 2s state and partly by emission lines of heavy elements.

Compton telescope observations of gamma rays from SN 1987A

Results are reported of observations of a significant excess of gamma rays at energies of 1.0-2.5 MeV from the direction of SN 1987A, 418 days after detonation. Two features at 1.21 and 1.88 MeV are attributed to the 1.238 MeV and the combined 1.771, 2.015, and 2.035 MeV line emissions from the decay of Co-56 in the expanding ejecta with respective fluxes of (4.6 +/-1.4 +/-1.2) x 10 exp -4 and (3.5 +/-0.9 +/-0.9) x 10 exp -4 gamma/sq cm s, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The obtained energy resolution of 11 percent did not permit a definite separation of the 1.771-MeV line from the two other lines at 2.015 and 2.035 MeV that form the group at 1.88 MeV. The line fluxes were obtained after correcting for the north-south effect and the continuum.

Constraints to the decays of Dirac neutrinos from SN 1987A

The decay mode of a keV-mass Dirac neutrino is addressed with reference to the nineteen neutrino events associated with SN 1987A that were detected by the Kamiokande II and Irvine-Brookhaven-Michigan detectors. A complementary constraint is presented which is based upon a distinctive signal associated with the decay of wrong-helicity neutrinos that was not seen: high-energy (50 MeV and higher) neutrino events. The absence of such events excludes the decay of wrong-helicity neutrinos into proper-helicity neutrinos for a Dirac neutrino of mass between 1 and 300 keV. The constraint also rules out models of the 17-keV neutrino.

Massive Dirac neutrinos and SN 1987A

The wrong-helicity states of a Dirac neutrino can provide an important cooling mechanism for young neutron stars. Based on numerical models of the early cooling of the neutron star associated with SN 1987A which self-consistently incorporate wrong-helicity neutrino emission, it is argued that a Dirac neutrino of mass greater than 30 keV (25 keV if it is degenerate) leads to shortening of the neutrino burst that is inconsistent with the Irvine-Michigan-Brookhaven and Kamiokande II data. If pions are as abundant as nucleons in the cores of neutron stars, the present limit improves to 15 keV.
