Advancing Pore–Space–Partitioned Metal–Organic Frameworks with Isoreticular Cluster Concept

Trigonal planar M 3 (O/OH) trimers are among the most important clusters in inorganic chemistry and are the foundational features of multiple high-impact MOF platforms. Here we introduce a concept called isoreticular cluster series and demonstrate that M 3 (O/OH), as the first member of a supertrimer series, can be combined with a higher hierarchical member (double-deck trimer here) to advance isoreticular chemistry. We report here an isoreticular series of pore-space-partitioned MOFs called M 3 M 6 pacs made from co-assembly between M 3 single-deck trimer and M 3x2 double-deck trimer. Important factors were identified on this multi-modular MOF platform to guide optimization of each module, which enables the phase selection of M 3 M 6 pacs by overcoming the formation of previously-always-observed same-cluster phases. The new pacs materials exhibit high surface area and high uptake capacity for CO 2 and small hydrocarbons, as well as selective adsorption properties relevant to separation of industrially important mixtures such as C 2 H 2 /CO 2 and C 2 H 2 /C 2 H 4 . Furthermore, new M 3 M 6 pacs materials show electrocatalytic properties with high activity.

A Multivariate Space‐Time Dynamic Model for Characterizing the Atmospheric Impacts Following the Mt. Pinatubo Eruption

The June 1991 Mt. Pinatubo eruption resulted in a massive increase of sulfate aerosols in the atmosphere, absorbing radiation and leading to global changes in surface and stratospheric temperatures. A volcanic eruption of this magnitude serves as a natural analog for stratospheric aerosol injection, a proposed solar radiation modification method to combat a warming climate. The impacts of such an event are multifaceted and region-specific. Our goal is to characterize the multivariate and dynamic nature of the atmospheric impacts following the Mt. Pinatubo eruption. We developed a multivariate space-time dynamic linear model to understand the full extent of the spatially- and temporally-varying impacts. Specifically, spatial variation is modeled using a flexible set of basis functions for which the basis coefficients are allowed to vary in time through a vector autoregressive (VAR) structure. This novel model is cast in a Dynamic Linear Model (DLM) framework and estimated via a customized MCMC approach. We demonstrate how the model quantifies the relationships between key atmospheric parameters prior to and following the Mt. Pinatubo eruption with reanalysis data from MERRA-2 and highlight when such a model is advantageous over univariate models.

State-Space Model to Estimate Salmon Escapement Using Multiple Data Sources

Abstract Accurate estimates of salmonids passing Lower Granite Dam on the Snake River, by species and origin, are a critical input to assessing the status and trends of various populations as well as successful management of fisheries in the Snake River basin. Here, we describe a state-space model that estimates such escapement past a dam by using window counts, PIT tag observations, and data from an adult fish trap, accounting for issues such as nighttime passage, fallback and reascension, potential observation error at the window, and uncertainty in the adult trap rate. We tested the approach using a simulation framework that mimicked several levels of observation error, differences between nighttime passage and reascension rates, and the possibility of the adult trap being closed for some period of time. Our results demonstrate that the model produced unbiased estimates across all tested scenarios. We also applied this model to empirical data from Lower Granite Dam to produce estimates of wild, clipped hatchery, and unclipped hatchery spring/summer-run Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha and steelhead O. mykiss from spawn years 2010–2019.

Interferometric 4D-STEM for Lattice Distortion and Interlayer Spacing Measurements of Bilayer and Trilayer 2D Materials

Van der Waals materials composed of stacks of individual atomic layers have attracted considerable attention due to their exotic electronic properties that can be altered by, e.g., manipulating the twist angle of bilayer materials or the stacking sequence of trilayer materials. To fully understand and control the unique properties of these few-layer materials, a technique that can provide information about their local in-plane structural deformations, twist direction, and out-of-plane structure is needed. In principle, interference in overlap regions of Bragg disks originating from separate layers of a material encodes 3D information about the relative positions of atoms in the corresponding layers. Here, an interferometric 4D scanning transmission electron microscopy technique is described that utilizes this phenomenon to extract precise structural information from few-layer materials with nm-scale resolution. It is demonstrated how this technique enables measurement of local pm-scale in-plane lattice distortions as well as twist direction and average interlayer spacings in bilayer and trilayer graphene, and therefore provides a means to better understand the interplay between electronic properties and precise structural arrangements of few-layer 2D materials.

Islands in de Sitter space

We consider black holes in 2d de Sitter JT gravity coupled to a CFT, and entangled with matter in a disjoint non-gravitating universe. Tracing out the entangling matter leaves the CFT in a density matrix whose stress tensor backreacts on the de Sitter geometry, lengthening the wormhole behind the black hole horizon. Naively, the entropy of the entangling matter increases without bound as the strength of the entanglement increases, but the monogamy property predicts that this growth must level off. We compute the entropy via the replica trick, including wormholes between the replica copies of the de Sitter geometry, and find a competition between conventional field theory entanglement entropy and the surface area of extremal “islands” in the de Sitter geometry. The black hole and cosmological horizons both play a role in generating such islands in the backreacted geometry, and have the effect of stabilizing the entropy growth as required by monogamy. We first show this in a scenario in which the de Sitter spatial section has been decompactified to an interval. Then we consider the compact geometry, and argue for a novel interpretation of the island formula in the context of closed universes that recovers the Page curve. Finally, we comment on the application of our construction to the cosmological horizon in empty de Sitter space.

Tracking discontinuities in parameter space

We develop a geometric framework in Feynman-parameter space to determine constraints on the sequential discontinuities of Feynman integrals. Our method is based on tracking the deformation of the integration contour as external kinematics are analytically continued. This procedure imposes powerful constraints on the analytic structure of Feynman integrals, providing crucial inputs for their bootstrap. We demonstrate the usefulness of this framework by applying it to integrals in dimensional regularization, with higher propagator powers, and to examples with non-uniform transcendental weight. The method is illustrated with several one- and two-loop calculations.

Mapping out the internal space in AdS/BCFT with Wilson loops

We study Wilson loops in string theory realizations of AdS/BCFT and wedge holography. The field theories are based on 3d N = 4 long quiver gauge theories engineered by D3, D5 and NS5 branes, and on BCFTs involving 4d N = 4 SYM coupled to such 3d theories. The holographic duals have geometry AdS 4 × S 2 × S 2 warped over a strip. We identify the holographic representation of antisymmetric Wilson loops associated with individual 3d gauge nodes in terms of probe D5-branes. The expectation values obtained holographically are matched to supersymmetric localization computations. Our results yield an identification of regions in the internal space with individual 3d gauge nodes. Connecting to bottom-up braneworld models, this gives a concrete notion of which parts of the 10d solutions correspond to the end-of-the-world brane and which to the remaining bulk. We also construct supersymmetric Janus on the brane embeddings in AdS 5 ×S 5 , which describe surface defects with boundaries and interfaces in N = 4 SYM.

Soft factorisation and exponentiation from Schwinger-space geometry

Infrared divergences in Quantum Field Theory govern the low-energy dynamics of many physical theories, and their understanding is a crucial ingredient in predicting the outcomes of collider experiments. We present a novel approach to deriving the structure of these divergences by employing the Schwinger parametrization of Feynman integrals. After using tropical geometry to identify divergent limits, we study the all-orders asymptotic properties of Feynman diagrams via matrix manipulations of graph Laplacians, which allows us to analyse their IR behaviour systematically. We explicitly demonstrate the soft-hard factorization of the integrand for a broad class of diagrams, and reveal that when written in terms of worldline distances, topologically distinct diagrams asymptote to the same integrand at leading order in the soft limit. In particular, for the case of Quantum Electrodynamics (with massive fermions), we use this fact to show how ladder-type diagrams combine in Schwinger-parameter space to yield the correct exponentiated soft anomalous dimension. This framework provides a foundation for extending these methods to more complex theories like Quantum Chromodynamics and offers a pathway towards a systematic understanding of infrared divergences in perturbative amplitudes.

Carving out OPE space and precise O(2) model critical exponents

We develop new tools for isolating CFTs using the numerical bootstrap. A “cutting surface” algorithm for scanning OPE coefficients makes it possible to find islands in high-dimensional spaces. Together with recent progress in large-scale semidefinite programming, this enables bootstrap studies of much larger systems of correlation functions than was previously practical. We apply these methods to correlation functions of charge-0, 1, and 2 scalars in the 3d O(2) model, computing new precise values for scaling dimensions and OPE coefficients in this theory. Our new determinations of scaling dimensions are consistent with and improve upon existing Monte Carlo simulations, sharpening the existing decades-old 8σ discrepancy between theory and experiment.

Measurement of the CKM angle γ with B ± → D[K ∓ π ± π ± π ∓ ]h ± decays using a binned phase-space approach

The CKM angle γ is determined from CP-violating observables measured in B ± → D[K ∓ π ± π ± π ∓ ]h ± , (h = K, π) decays, where the measurements are performed in bins of the decay phase-space of the D meson. Using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb –1 , γ is determined to be $\gamma ={\left(54.8\begin{array}{c}+6.0\\ {}-5.8\end{array}\begin{array}{c}+0.6\\ {}-0.6\end{array}\begin{array}{c}+6.7\\ {}-4.3\end{array}\right)}^{\circ },$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third from the external inputs on the coherence factors and strong phases of the D-meson decays.

Distributions in CFT. Part II. Minkowski space

CFTs in Euclidean signature satisfy well-accepted rules, such as the convergent Euclidean OPE. It is nowadays common to assume that CFT correlators exist and have various properties also in Lorentzian signature. Some of these properties may represent extra assumptions, and it is an open question if they hold for familiar statistical-physics CFTs such as the critical 3d Ising model. Here we consider Wightman 4-point functions of scalar primaries in Lorentzian signature. We derive a minimal set of their properties solely from the Euclidean unitary CFT axioms, without using extra assumptions. We establish all Wightman axioms (temperedness, spectral property, local commutativity, clustering), Lorentzian conformal invariance, and distributional convergence of the s-channel Lorentzian OPE. This is done constructively, by analytically continuing the 4-point functions using the s-channel OPE expansion in the radial cross-ratios ρ, ρ¯. We prove a key fact that |ρ|, |ρ¯| < 1 inside the forward tube, and set bounds on how fast |ρ|, |ρ¯| may tend to 1 when approaching the Minkowski space.

Entanglement in De Sitter space

This paper expands on two recent proposals and, for generalizing the Ryu-Takayanagi and Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi formulas to de Sitter space. The proposals (called the monolayer and bilayer proposals) are similar; both replace the boundary of AdS by the boundaries of static-patches — in other words event horizons. After stating the rules for each, we apply them to a number of cases and show that they yield results expected on other grounds. The monolayer and bilayer proposals often give the same results, but in one particular situation they disagree. To definitively decide between them we need to understand more about the nature of the thermodynamic limit of holographic systems.

Decorated TQFTs and their Hilbert spaces

We discuss topological quantum field theories that compute topological invariants which depend on additional structures (or decorations) on three-manifolds. The q-series invariant $\hat{Z}$(q) proposed by Gukov, Pei, Putrov, and Vafa is an example of such an invariant. We describe how to obtain these decorated invariants by cutting and gluing and make a proposal for Hilbert spaces that are assigned to two-dimensional surfaces in the $\hat{Z}$-TQFT.

TCC in the interior of moduli space and its implications for the string landscape and cosmology

We consider the classical Friedmann-Robertson-Walker solutions that describe a universe undergoing a transition from an accelerating expansion phase in the past to an eternal decelerating expansion phase in the future, driven by a scalar field evolving in a potential energy landscape. We show that any solution for which the accelerating phase violates the Trans-Planckian Censorship Conjecture (TCC), even in the interior of moduli space, never approaches the asymptotic vacuum with zero particles. Based on the assumption that the effective field theory must be valid for the vacuum on the asymptotic boundary, as motivated by holography and string theory, we argue that (multi-field) scalar potentials with such solutions are disallowed, thus strengthening the case for TCC. In particular, assuming the regularity of the future vacuum state in the string landscape, we derive results that imply a new set of highly-nonlinear constraints across the string landscape which in the absence of certain meta-stable vacua make realizing inflation impossible.

Search for CP violation in the phase space of D 0 → π⁻π⁺π 0 decays with the energy test

A search for CP violation in D 0 → π - π + π 0 decays is reported, using pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment from 2015 to 2018 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb - 1 . An unbinned model-independent approach provides sensitivity to local CP violation within the two-dimensional phase space of the decay. The method is validated using the Cabibbo-favoured channel D 0 → K - π + π 0 and background regions of the signal mode. The results are consistent with CP symmetry in this decay.

2-loop scattering on superstring and supermembrane in flat space

We consider the S-matrix of transverse scalar excitations on an infinite D = 10 GS superstring and D = 11 supermembrane in flat target space. We compute the 4-particle scattering amplitude in the 2-loop approximation and demonstrate that, like in the Nambu string case, the D = 10 GS string S-matrix does not contain non-trivial 2d UV divergences (UV pole not accompanied by terms with logarithms of momenta is an artifact of dimensional regularization). This is consistent with underlying integrability of this model which is maintaining by adding appropriate local counterterms. In the supermembrane case there are no 1-loop divergences but we find a genuine 2-loop UV pole. This demonstrates non-finiteness of the world-volume S-matrix of the M2 brane theory.

Shocks and information exchange in de Sitter space

We discuss some implications of recent progress in understanding the black hole information paradox for complementarity in de Sitter space. Extending recent work by two of the authors, we describe a bulk procedure that allows information expelled through the cosmological horizon to be received by an antipodal observer. Generically, this information transfer takes a scrambling time t=H- 1 (S ds ). We emphasize that this procedure relies crucially on selection of the Bunch-Davies vacuum state, interpreted as the thermofield double state that maximally entangles two antipodal static patches. The procedure also requires the presence of an (entangled) energy reservoir, created by the collection of Hawking modes from the cosmological horizon. We show how this procedure avoids a cloning paradox and comment on its implications.

Exploring color-octet scalar parameter space in minimal R-symmetric models

In this work we study the collider phenomenology of color-octet scalars (sgluons) in minimal supersymmetric models endowed with a global continuous R symmetry. We systematically catalog the significant decay channels of scalar and pseudoscalar sgluons and identify novel features that are natural in these models. These include decays in nonstandard diboson channels, such as to a gluon and a photon; three-body decays with considerable branching fractions; and long-lived particles with displaced vertex signatures. We also discuss the single and pair production of these particles and show that they can evade existing constraints from the Large Hadron Collider, to varying extents, in large regions of reasonable parameter space. We find, for instance, that a 725 GeV scalar and a 350 GeV or lighter pseudoscalar can still be accommodated in realistic scenarios.
