Scoping, Tailoring, and Abstraction Refinement in Hazard Assessment Processes

Hazard assessment is an engineering activity that produces insight into which states of thing being engineered might be hazardous. In aviation contexts, it is often performed for certification credit at both the aircraft and system levels during the early design phase of the system’s lifecycle. However, novel aircraft paradigms such as urban air mobility (UAM)operations might either violate assumptions on which traditional aviation hazard assessment is based or simply possess attributes that would make other approaches more effective. In this paper, we define the key concepts under pinning hazard assessment and identify the limitations and assumptions inherent in hazard analysis. We analyze popular techniques to show how they embody these key concepts. We identify ways in which hazard assessment may be scoped and tailored to an application. And, using worked examples, we discuss how, where, and why such tailoring might be needed, especially in novel contexts.

Refined Predictions Compared with the Propulsion Airframe Aeroacoustics and Aircraft System Noise Flight Research Test Data

In a collaboration between NASA and The Boeing Company, the Propulsion Airframe Aeroacoustics and Aircraft System Noise Flight Research Test was executed by the Boeing ecoDemonstrator Program in 2020 with an Etihad Airways Boeing 787-10 aircraft. This ambitious flight research successfully accomplished many objectives and constitutes the most comprehensive and highest quality acoustic flight data available to NASA for a modern commercial subsonic transport aircraft. One purpose of these data is to be the measure of accuracy for the aircraft system noise prediction capabilities of NASA. This research reviews the impact of the major improvements in prediction methods implemented up to this point and tested in the Research version of the NASA Aircraft Noise Prediction Program. The improvements have been to the prediction of jet source and jet-flap interaction, to both fan broadband and tone source prediction, and to the prediction of propulsion airframe aeroacoustic scattering effects. In general, over the engine power range, comparisons between prediction and flight data are within 2 EPNdB including for the intentional sideline-to-sideline asymmetries as implemented in the flight test by flying the aircraft with only one engine at power. Considerable progress has been shown here in the continuing effort to advance the fidelity of NASA aircraft noise prediction capabilities for subsonic aircraft flight acoustics, modern transport aircraft and future aircraft concepts.

Standalone Hazard Evaluation and Refinement From Instrument Findings (S.H.E.R.I.F.)

The Standalone Hazard Evaluation From Instrument Findings or SHERIF is a set of novel algorithms and associated framework designed to support the generation of Digital Elevation Maps (DEMs) from multiple LiDAR scans and perform Hazard Detection (HD) and Safe Site Selection with minimal input from other onboard systems. SHERIF can employ several techniques to perform Point Cloud registration(PCR) on disparate LiDAR scans of a planetary surface to generate a DEM which evolves over the course of a trajectory, with a flow designed to enable robustness. The framework also supports a variety of Hazard Detection and Safe Site Selection algorithms which can be run on the evolving DEM being produced. SHERIF features a robust and modular construction, allowing the user a high degree of flexibility in selecting and implementing whichever PCR and HD/SSL algorithms they may prefer, while maintaining the data products and sensor independence of the core SHERIF framework. SHERIF was recently tested in a hardware in the loop simulation at NASA JSC.

Thermal, Structural, and Rotordynamics Refinements to the Superconducting Rotor of A 1.4 Mw Partially Superconducting Machine for Electrified Aircraft

NASA is developing the high efficiency megawatt motor (HEMM), a 1.4 MW partially superconducting machine, to ad-dress the need for highly efficient, lightweight, MW-class ma-chines to support aviation sustainability efforts. This paper presents progress on the thermal, structural, and rotordynamics aspects of HEMM’s superconducting rotor. Emissivity measurements of gold coated cobalt iron and titanium parts are presented and then used to correlate a thermal model of the rotor to existing data from a thermo-electrical test of the full-scale rotor. Lessons learned from the correlated model are presented, including a rank ordering of the contributors to the temperature of the superconducting coils. An updated structural design of the HEMM rotor is presented and compared to the prior design. Finite element analysis demonstrates that the updated design improves stress margins while reducing magnetic flux leakage and retaining thermal performance. The key conclusions of the rotordynamics design are presented.

Refinement of Selection of a Campaign of Analog Subjects for NASA Human Exploration Research Analog

The NASA Research Operations and Integration (ROI) Human Exploration Research Analog (HERA) is a 650-square foot habitat that supports isolation and confinement research topics including behavioral health and performance, team dynamics, and autonomy studies. Campaign 6 (C6), a complement of fifteen science experiments and operational tasks was a simulated mission to the Mars moon Phobos. For Campaign 7 (C7), the most recent HERA campaign, a complement of eighteen science experiments and operational tasks were completed by four crew members over a 45-day simulated mission to Mars. Prior to each mission, a crew of 4 primary crew members and 2 alternates are selected from a pool of candidates. Applicants must meet astronaut-like criteria and be composed of an equal gender ratio. After a comprehensive screening and interview process the crew and alternates are selected.

SHERIF was recently evaluated via simulation and hardware-in-the-loop experimental testing at NASA Johnson Space Center.
