Expanded Capabilities and Opportunities for Virtual Beamline Code

In the 25 years since LLNL broke ground on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) - a cornerstone of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Stockpile Stewardship Program - the NIF and Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate has steadily pushed the boundaries of laser physics, nonlinear optics, and photonics in service of inertial confinement fusion experiments, and advanced photon sources development. Beyond the 192 beamlines of the primary laser facility with its world-record energy and fusion yields, NIF&PS capabilities have expanded to include chirped-pulse amplification, kilojoule petawatt-class short-pulse systems to generate hard x-ray radiographic probes, high-average power lasers as secondary sources for generation or wake field particle acceleration along directed energy applications, and other scientific pursuits. The Computing Directorate partners with NIF&PS on numerous projects and technologies from diagnostic measurements and high performance control systems to data analysis, information technology infrastructure, and scientific simulation code development. “This strong collaboration enables cutting-edge science, particularly with regard to physics-based modeling and simulation,” says physicist Jean-Michel Di Nicola. One crucial capability for NIF&PS is the Virtual Beamline (VBL) laser simulation code. It can model all the major laser physics and technology involved in the design optimization, commissioning, and operations of advanced laser architectures from tabletop to NIF-scale. VBL provides researchers with high-fidelity models and high-resolution calculations of laser performance predictions—including for the entire NIF laser system, the Advanced Radiographic Capability, parts of the High Repetition-Rate Advanced Petawatt Laser System laser delivered to the Czech Republic, and the Optical Science Laser. After more than two decades of experimentally verified physics and computing enhancements, this unique workhorse code is wrapping up another major milestone: migration from Java to C++ with a flurry of user interface and optimization features, as well as laser physics and high-resolution enhancements thanks to parallel execution on Livermore Computing platforms.

X-ray Source Characteristics from July 2020 SGEMP Experiments at the National Ignition Facility

This report details the measured x-ray characteristics radiating from laser targets on 7 shots at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's National Ignition Facility performed June 30 - July 2, 2020. Generally, the x-ray sources were designed to serve as meaningful drivers of a variety of Radiation Effects Sciences response experiments. Specifically, on these 7 shots, the measured x-ray output characteristics and the response experiments serve as a useful data set for validating performance and informing further development of Sandia National Laboratories' EMPIRE code. We present x-ray measurements and analyses relevant to simulating the System-Generated Electro Magnetic Pulse experiments that also occurred on these shots (described elsewhere). Sufficient detail is provided so that a motivated, but novice, x-ray source user could produce some of these analysis results from raw data on similar x-ray shots.

EMP Testing of NAE Magnetic Motor Starters

Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) performed a high-altitude nuclear electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) critical generation station component vulnerability test campaign with a focus on high-frequency, conducted early-time (E1) HEMP for the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER). This report provides vulnerability test results to investigate component response and/or damage thresholds to reasonable HEMP threat levels that will help to inform site vulnerability assessments, mitigation planning, and modeling calibrations. This work details testing of North American Electric (NAE) magnetic motor starters to determine the effects of conducted HEMP environments. Motor starters are the control elements that provide power to motors throughout a generating plant; a starter going offline would cause loss of power to critical pumps and compressors, which could lead to component damage or unplanned plant outages. Additionally, failed starters would be unable to support plant startup. Six industrial motor starters were tested: two 2 horsepower (HP) starters with breaker disconnects and typical protection equipment, two 20 HP starters with breaker disconnects, and two 20 HP starters with fused disconnects. Each starter was placed in a circuit with a generator and inductive motor matching the starter rating. The conducted EMP insult was injected on the power cables passing through the motor starter, with separate tests for the generator and motor sides of the starter.

Laboratory Study of Magnetic Reconnection in Lunar-relevant Mini-magnetospheres

Abstract Mini-magnetospheres are small ion-scale structures that are well suited to studying kinetic-scale physics of collisionless space plasmas. Such ion-scale magnetospheres can be found on local regions of the Moon, associated with the lunar crustal magnetic field. In this paper, we report on the laboratory experimental study of magnetic reconnection in laser-driven, lunar-like ion-scale magnetospheres on the Large Plasma Device at the University of California, Los Angeles. In the experiment, a high-repetition rate (1 Hz), nanosecond laser is used to drive a fast-moving, collisionless plasma that expands into the field generated by a pulsed magnetic dipole embedded into a background plasma and magnetic field. The high-repetition rate enables the acquisition of time-resolved volumetric data of the magnetic and electric fields to characterize magnetic reconnection and calculate the reconnection rate. We notably observe the formation of Hall fields associated with reconnection. Particle-in-cell simulations reproducing the experimental results were performed to study the microphysics of the interaction. By analyzing the generalized Ohm’s law terms, we find that the electron-only reconnection is driven by kinetic effects through the electron pressure anisotropy. These results are compared to recent satellite measurements that found evidence of magnetic reconnection near the lunar surface.

Review of controlled fusion research using laser heating.

Development of methods for generating high laser pulse energy has stimulated research leading to new ideas for practical controlled thermonuclear fusion machines. A review is presented of some important efforts in progress, and two different approaches have been selected as examples for discussion. One involves the concept of very short pulse lasers with power output tailored, in time, to obtain a nearly isentropic compression of a deuterium-tritium pellet to very high densities and temperatures. A second approach utilizing long wavelength, long pulse, efficient gas lasers to heat a column of plasma contained in a solenoidal field is also discussed. The working requirements of the laser and various magnetic field geometries of this approach are described.

Development of a 1000V, 200A, low-loss, fast-switching, gate-assisted turn-off thyristor

The results of a program to develop a fast high power thyristor that can operate in switching circuits at frequencies of 10 to 20 kHz with very low power loss are given. Feasibility was demonstrated for a thyristor that blocks 1000V forward and reverse, conducts 200A, turns on in little more than 2 more microseconds with only 2A of gate drive, turns off in 3 microseconds with 2A of gate assist current and has an energy dissipation of only 12 mJ per pulse for a 20 microsecond half sine wave 200A pulse. Data were generated that clearly showed the tradeoffs that can be made between the turn off time and forward drop. The understanding of this relationship is necessary in the selection of deliverable thyristors with turn off times up to 7 microseconds to give improved efficiency in a series resonant dc to dc inverter application.

NDE of simulated Space Shuttle tile disbonds

A technique which involves the use of ultrasonic Lamb waves for assaying the structural integrity of adhesive bonds between layered materials on thin metal plates, particularly with regard to the Shuttle TPS, is presented. The Lamb waves are generated by a pulse impact, resulting in surface waves propagating radially at 2.4 mm/microsec. Trials were performed with the sound waves applied to samples, of aluminum similar to the Orbiter external skin, which were coated with Teflon and a RTV silicone screed. The goal was to detect localized debonded areas or potentially debonded areas, which, during reentry, could result in blistering of the aluminum skin. The ultrasonic probes are described, noting the usage of broadband ultrasonic harmonics and a minicomputer processor. The testing system was found to accurately identify weakened bonds by the ratio of high and low frequency component areas of the received signal of the Lamb waves sent across the surface.

The Eddington limit and supercritical accretion. II - Time-dependent calculations

Spherically symmetric, time-dependent accretion of an ionized hydrogen plasma onto a neutron star is calculated for accretion rates in excess of the Eddington limit. The coupled hydrodynamic and frequency integrated radiative transfer equations are solved on an Eulerian grid for these supercritical accretion flows. Our results indicate that steady state flows are limited to rates at or below the critical rate, with emergent luminosities equal to or less than the Eddington luminosity. Initially supercritical accretion rates generate a large pulse of radiation which reduces the accretion rate to the critical value and produces an extended quasi-static envelope.

Image processing system to analyze droplet distributions in sprays

An image processing system was developed which automatically analyzes the size distributions in fuel spray video images. Images are generated by using pulsed laser light to freeze droplet motion in the spray sample volume under study. This coherent illumination source produces images which contain droplet diffraction patterns representing the droplets degree of focus. The analysis is performed by extracting feature data describing droplet diffraction patterns in the images. This allows the system to select droplets from image anomalies and measure only those droplets considered in focus. Unique features of the system are the totally automated analysis and droplet feature measurement from the grayscale image. The feature extraction and image restoration algorithms used in the system are described. Preliminary performance data is also given for two experiments. One experiment gives a comparison between a synthesized distribution measured manually and automatically. The second experiment compares a real spray distribution measured using current methods against the automatic system.

Digital frequency-synthesizing subsystem generates trains of pulses, free of jitter, for use as frequency-control signals in tracking filters. Part of assembly of electronic equipment used to measure vibrations in bearings in rotating machinery. Designed to meet requirements for tracking narrow-band cage-rotation and ball-pass components of vibrations, as discussed in "Frequency-Tracking Error Detector" (MFS-29538) and "Ball-Pass Cage-Modulation Detector" (MFS-29539). Synthesizer includes preset counter, output of which controls signal for ball-pass filter. Transition to hard turbulence in thermal convection at infinite Prandtl number

Direct numerical simulations of two-dimensional high Rayleigh (Ra) number, base-heated thermal convection in large aspect-ratio boxes are presented for infinite Prandtl number fluids, as applied to the earth's mantle. A transition is characaterized in the flow structures in the neighborhood of Ra between 10 to the 7th and 10 to the 8th. These high Ra flows consist of large-scale cells with strong intermittent, boundary-layer instabilities. For Ra exceeding 10 to the 7th it is found that the heat-transfer mechanism changes from one characterized by mushroom-like plumes to one consisting of disconnected ascending instabilities, which do not carry with them all the thermal anomaly from the bottom boundary layer. Plume-plume collisions become much more prominent in high Ra situations and have a tendency of generating a pulse-like behavior in the fixed plume. This type of instability represents a distinct mode of heat transfer in the hard turbulent regime. Predictions of this model can be used to address certain issues concerning the mode of time-dependent convection in the earth's mantle.

High-power generation in IMPATT devices in the 100-200-GHz range

A silicon double-drift IMPATT diode with high uniform doping levels was simulated. Simulation results show that it is possible for silicon IMPATT diodes to generate extremely high pulsed output power for frequencies above 100 GHz under high current-density operation. The highest output power matched to a 1-ohm load resistance obtained at 150 GHz is 37.7 W, with a dc current density of 200 kA/sq cm, although the calculated power conversion efficiency is low. It is also shown that the low-power conversion efficiency limits the diode's continuous wave power operation.
