Acousto-optic modulators of high-power laser radiation on the basis of KGW and KYW crystals

Different modifications of acousto-optic modulators (AOMs) based on KG(WO{sub 4}){sub 2} (KGW) and KY(WO{sub 4}){sub 2} (KYW) crystals, designed for Q switching of high-power pulsed lasers, is developed and investigated. It is shown that AOMs based on these crystals are universal, can be combined with different lasers in the wavelength range of 1 – 3 μm, and have a high radiation resistance in the absence of antireflection coatings and light input at Brewster’s angle. The operation efficiency of KGW-based AOMs is experimentally demonstrated. Solid-state lasers based on Cr : Er : YSGG (λ = 2.78 μm), Cr : Yb : Ho : YSGG (λ = 2.87 μm), Cr : Tm : Ho : YSGG (λ = 2.09 μm), and Nd : YAG (λ = 1.064 μm) crystals with active acousto-optic Q switching, operating in the repetitively pulsed regime with a high beam quality and without surface destruction, are investigated. Lasing pulses (30 – 60)-ns long with energy up to 32 mJ at a repetition rate from 1 to 1000 Hz are obtained. (paper)

A Stochastic Transport Model for the Cumulative Number of Fissions and Deposited Fission Energy

The stochastic theory of neutron transport is extended to describe the cumulative distribution of fission numbers and deposited fission energy in a multiplying assembly. Solutions for the probability distributions are obtained using analytical approximations and Monte Carlo simulation in lumped geometry and in symmetric homogeneous and heterogeneous spheres. The results show the development of a power-law tail in the steady state fission number and deposited energy distributions when the medium is critical, independent of the fission neutron multiplicity distribution and domain heterogeneity. In contrast, the asymptotic decay is faster than exponential in subcritical media due to rapid chain extinction and in supercritical media due to the increasing probability of chain divergence. Here, a formal asymptotic analysis of the problem in lumped geometry with an arbitrary fission neutron multiplicity confirms the existence of power-law tails at critical.

TRISO Burnup-Dependent Failure Analysis of a HTGR Design-Basis Accident Using BISON

Here, this work assesses the failure behavior of the silicon carbide (SiC) layer in TRIstructural ISOtropic (TRISO) fuel particles with BISON during both steady-state and transient conditions for the MHTGR-350 design by General Atomics. A one-dimensional BISON model for a uranium oxycarbide–bearing TRISO is developed to simulate a power level of 50 mW/particles up to 12.4% fissions per initial metal atom (FIMA). Stress predictions for the materials of interest are presented as a function of burnup, along with the SiC failure probability computed using Weibull statistics under the assumption of realistic SiC quality.

Creep strength boosted by a high-density of stable nanoprecipitates in high-chromium steels

There is a need worldwide to develop materials for advanced power plants with steam temperatures of 700°C and above that will achieve long-term creep-rupture strength and low CO 2 emissions. The creep resistance of actual 9-12Cr steels is not enough to fulfil the engineering requirements above 600°C. In this paper, the authors report their advances in the improvement of creep properties of this type of steels by the microstructural optimization through nano-precipitation using two methodologies. 1) Applying a high temperature austenitization cycle followed by an ausforming step (thermomechanical treatment, TMT) to G91 steel, to increase the martensite dislocation density and, thus, the number density of MX precipitates (M = V,Nb; X = C,N) but at the expense of deteriorating the ductility. 2) Compositional adjustments, guided by computational thermodynamics, combined with a conventional heat treatment (no TMT), to design novel steels with a good ductility while still possessing a high number density of MX precipitates, similar to the one obtained after the TMT in G91. The microstructures have been characterized by optical, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, EBSD and atom probe tomography. The creep behaviour at 700°C has been evaluated under a load of 200 N using small punch creep tests.

Structural, optical, and thermal properties of BN thin films grown on diamond via pulsed laser deposition

Heterostructures based on ultrawide-bandgap (UWBG) semiconductors (bandgap > 4.0 eV), such as BN and diamond, hold significant importance for the development of high-power electronics in the next generation. However, achieving in situ heteroepitaxy of BN/diamond or vice versa remains exceptionally challenging due to the complex growth kinetics involved. In this work, we grew BN thin film on (100) single-crystal diamonds using pulsed laser deposition and investigated its structural, magnetic, optical, and thermal properties. Throughout this study, the structural analyses confirmed the growth of BN films, which exhibited diamagnetic behavior at room temperature. Notably, the film demonstrated anisotropic refractive index characteristics within the visible-to-near-infrared wavelength range. The room-temperature cross-plane thermal conductivity of BN is 1.53 ± 0.77 W/mK, while the thermal conductance of the BN/diamond interface is 20 ± 2 MW/m 2 ⁢K. These findings have significant implications for a range of device applications based on UWBG BN/diamond heterostructures.

A Single-Stage Isolated Resonant SiC DC/AC Inverter for Efficient High-Power Applications

This paper presents a single-stage series-resonant dual active half bridge (SR-DAHB) inverter suitable for high power applications. The topology is an isolated dual half-bridge circuit with an unfolding bridge. A combined phase-shift and frequency modulation technique is utilized to generate AC power output. In high-power applications where the switching devices operate at relatively high current and voltage, the switching loss becomes the major portion of the converter’s total loss as the devices are turned on and off under hard switching condition. The primary merit of the proposed single-stage SR-DAHB inverter with the combined phase-shift and frequency modulation control is to significantly reduce the switching loss so that it is not a function of load current. A precise and comprehensive power loss model is developed for both the SR-DAHB and DAHB to optimize the operation of the inverters. The objective of the optimization is to minimize the inverter total loss while calculating the optimum combination of frequency and phase shift. A 1.5 kV, 50 kW prototype was built to demonstrate the performance of the SRDAHB versus DAHB inverters with the combined phase-shift and frequency modulation control, and validate the theoretical analysis.

Modeling and Control of Cascaded Bridgeless Multilevel Rectifier Under Unbalanced Load Conditions

The goal of this project is to model and control a novel unidirectional cascaded multilevel bridgeless rectifier as an active front end in medium and high voltage applications. This topology has many advantages over a conventional cascaded H-bridge rectifier, such as lower implementation cost, higher reliability, and greater flexibility with similar power quality. The steady-state mathematical model is used to develop a method for the voltage balancing of dc cells. Power factor analysis is discussed to achieve unity power factor using fully controlled hbridge cells. Power loss, efficiency, and cost comparison studies between the traditional cascaded H-Bridge converter and the proposed bridgeless converter demonstrate the advantages. A novel control strategy is proposed to achieve dc voltage balancing, fast and robust grid synchronization and power factor correction under unbalanced load conditions. Simulation and experimental results validate the models and control method.

Big Data Analytic for Cascading Failure Analysis

With the challenges of increased grid dynamics and more variability of power generation from renewable energy sources, rapidly increasing complexity in the grid model, and abundant data from measurements and simulations, the requirements for computational analysis have also increased dramatically. Power system operators and engineers need to analyze more scenarios, extract meaningful information from a larger set of data, and respond more quickly when faced with these new challenges for large-scale applications, such as contingency analysis. This paper proposes a novel big data analysis approach for power system cascading analysis, prevention, and remediation. The developed techniques will be capable of cascading analysis, better assessment of the system’s vulnerability level, as well as proposing potential remediation. Case studies using IEEE 118-bus system and a 500-bus system, with a comparison against a commercial tool, validate the advantages of the developed big data approach: accurate prediction, and more importantly, faster and effective correction actions. The developed techniques could be further used for other power system applications.

Study of a High-speed Outer Rotor Burst Containing Enclosure

The increasing demand for high-speed electric machines in many applications pushes the development of high-power density electric motors. Outer rotor motors, which can be designed with a larger airgap diameter than inner rotor motors for the same overall diameter and, therefore, provide higher torque, distinguish themselves in space-constrained but high torque applications. However, increasing the motor speed and diameter results in significant centrifugal loads for the outer rotor motor due to its higher airgap diameter. Additional attention must be paid at the design stage to consider the extreme situation of possible mechanical failure, such as the sudden burst of the high-speed rotating parts in the motor, and measures must be taken to prevent their damage to other system components in advance. Through the finite element dynamic impact analysis, we studied the damage caused by broken parts on the inner wall of the electric motor housing when the motor rotates at 20,000 RPM. The proposed method is expected to provide reasonable recommendations of the enclosure material and its thickness required to protect other components in the same powertrain system when the high-power density motor fails unexpectedly.

Steady-State Analysis of Microgrid Distributed Control Under Denial of Service Attacks

Distributed control is an effective method to coordinate multiple components in a microgrid. It usually has mandatory requirements for communication graph topology; changing the topology unexpectedly could disrupt the operation of a distributed controller. A denial of service (DoS) attack blocks communication channels to cause variations in communication graph. Unforeseen topology changes render a controller to receive incomplete system information. Control decisions made based on incorrect information can lead to significantly reduced grid supporting capability. As a result, the vital power balance between generation and load may be challenged. Determining power balance requires steady-state power flow analysis; however, the cyber-induced steady-state analysis is not well studied in the literature. Here, in this article, we show that a cyber–physical microgrid with unknown DoS attacks has augmented uncertain power flow equations, whose special structure creates new computational issue to determining power balance. To deal with the issue, we develop a novel cyber-induced microgrid model: the cyber–physical system is transformed into a pure physical model, where the disruption effects of DoS in the cyber layer are shown to be equivalent to the variations of the physical model parameters. With the transformed system, we develop a sufficient condition to ascertain the system power balance under unknown DoS attacks. In addition, practical insights for resilient distributed control design are shown as well.

A Low-Flow Marine Hydrokinetic Turbine for a Floating Unmanned Mobile Platform

Design and fabrication of a marine hydrokinetic turbine for deployment from a floating unmanned autonomous mobile catamaran platform is described. The objective is to develop a low-flow current turbine for deployment from a floating mobile catamaran USV platform. An undershot water wheel has been selected as the turbine of choice and a WAM-V 16 catamaran has been selected as the USV platform. The concept of operation is that the USV platform would autonomously seek and navigate to a coastal location where coastal or tidal currents may be present, anchor at the location, and deploy the turbine to harness the current energy, convert it to electricity and store it in onboard battery banks. The prototype system being developed is targeted at supporting development of self-powered autonomous mobile recharge stations for unmanned aerial vehicles in coastal zones. Once implemented on the vehicle, open water tests are planned for a range of environmental conditions, involving tidal and coastal currents, and system configurations. The status of the ongoing effort will be discussed.

A High-Current Pulsed Prototype Power Supply

The Accelerator Controls Operations Research Network (ACORN) project aims to modernize the accelerator control system and replace aging power supplies at Fermilab. As part of this effort, outdated RF ferrite bias power supplies will be redesigned. These power supplies are essential for tuning the resonant frequency of RF cavities by delivering programmable current outputs of up to 2500 A and voltages ranging from −10 V to +35 V. They operate at a repetition rate of 15 Hz in the Booster ring, and 1 Hz at the Main Injector ring. The power supplies utilize a bank of transistors in the linear region, connected in parallel with the load, to actively regulate the output current from a 12-pulse SCR bridge. To support this upgrade, a new bias power supply topology was developed as proof of concept. The design utilizes an IGBT Hbridge operating in Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) mode, controlled by a microcontroller. A prototype, constructed using spare components, successfully delivered an output current of 500 A at a repetition rate of 15 Hz during initial testing. The circuit's bandwidth was measured at 480 Hz, highlighting opportunities for further optimization in the controller design to achieve the target bandwidth of 2 kHz.

Operando Microscopy Characterization of Perovskite Solar Cells

In this work, we developed operando Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) to study the electrostatic potential distribution across perovskite cells under light and forward bias to gain a deeper understanding of device operation physics. As a case study, we selected perovskite cells with a SnO 2 -based electron-selective layer (ESL), which showed great potential for fabricating high-efficiency, hysteresis-free devices due to the deeper conduction band and higher electron mobility of SnO 2 . The as-made device showed a main junction at the perovskite/spiro interface. After light soaking and applying forward bias, the junction quality improved, possibly explained by filling trap states at the interfaces and by the perovskite absorber perhaps having a self-poling effect; the main junction is observed at the ESL/perovskite interface. The results are consistent with current-voltage measurements, device performance improves mainly with fill factor enhancement. The operando KPFM results should more closely reflect the real case during current density-voltage measurements or solar cell operation. The operando KPFM technique that we have developed can be a powerful tool to provide a deeper understanding of the device operation mechanism and to further optimize the device.

SiC Microchannel Heat Sinks for High Heat Flux Dissipation of 1 kW/cm 2

Thermal management has become a major barrier in the development of high-power micro-devices. Microchannel heat sinks (MCHS) are a promising method to dissipate high heat fluxes from high power density devices. Reducing the thermal resistance will reduce the temperature increase of the electronic device, allowing for higher powers to be achieved while maintaining a safe operating temperature. This paper reports on the use of silicon carbide (Sic) microchannels to dissipate high heat fluxes up to 1 kW/cm 2 over a footprint of 0.25 cm 2 . The use of high aspect ratio and decreased hydraulic diameter channels has allowed for very low thermal resistances to be achieved at higher heat duties compared to previous studies. The experiments performed resulted in heater temperatures of less than 60 °C and thermal resistances as low as 0.024 cm 2 . ° $C$/W between the heater surface and fluid inlet temperature. In conclusion, the demonstrated thermal performance of the SiC MCHS is an encouraging means for dissipating heat from high power density microelectronic devices.

Planning Optimization for Inductively Charged On-demand Automated Electric Shuttles Project at Greenville, South Carolina

Wireless charging technology presents an ideal fit for autonomous electric vehicles for realizing a fully automated system (vehicle and charger). This paper presents a planning optimization analysis for a pilot project of in-route wireless charging infrastructure serving fixed-route on-demand shared automated electric shuttles (SAESs) at Greenville, South Carolina, USA. A single-objective non-linear mixed integer system planning optimization problem is formulated. A comprehensive cost model representing the overall inductively charged SAESs system is developed, considering road construction, power electronics and materials, traction battery, and installation costs. The optimization problem is solved to determine the best combination of the system key design parameters (number and allocations of wireless chargers, charging power level, track length and on-board battery capacity) that show the most cost-effective solution and allow the SAESs to achieve charge-sustaining operation. The planning platform incorporates representative simulated traffic data (driving speed and routes) for four SAESs in the Greenville using the Simulation of Urban Mobility tool. These data are fed to a vehicle powertrain model and a wireless charger power model to predict the battery power, energy and state-of-charge profiles, which are provided to the search algorithm to assess the design objectives under specific constraints. Finally, the results indicate that implementing high-power (100 kW) wireless charger at a few designated stops for fixed-route SAESs with the proper track length allows the vehicles to realize charge-sustaining operation, infinite range, and zero recharge downtime, with a significant reduction in the on-board battery (36%) and road coverage (69%), at minimum cost.

Detection and Diagnosis of Data Integrity Attacks in Solar Farms Based on Multilayer Long Short-Term Memory Network

Photovoltaic (PV) systems are becoming more vulnerable to cyber threats. In response to this emerging concern, developing cyber-secure power electronics converters has received increased attention from the IEEE Power Electronics Society that recently launched a cyber-physical-security initiative. Here this letter proposes a deep sequence learning based diagnosis solution for data integrity attacks on PV systems in smart grids, including dc–dc and dc–ac converters. The multilayer long short-term memory networks are used to leverage time-series electric waveform data from current and voltage sensors in PV systems. The proposed method has been evaluated in a PV smart grid benchmark model with extensive quantitative analysis. As a comparison, we have evaluated classic data-driven methods, including K-nearest neighbor, decision tree, support vector machine, artificial neural network, and convolutional neural network. Comparison results verify performances of the proposed method for detection and diagnosis of various data integrity attacks on PV systems.
