Application of the embedded atom method to Pb and Be

We have derived the embedding energy functional and two-body potential of the embedded atom method using decreasing exponentials for both the electron density and the two body potential. The embedding function was obtained from the equation of state given by Rose et al. (1984). Because of the form of the embedding function, the equilibrium lattice constant, cohesive energy, and bulk modulus are automatically satisfied. The two parameters phi(e) and gamma of the two-body potential were determined by fitting to shear modulus and the single vacancy formation energy. Contributions of up to the third nearest neighbors were included in the evaluation of the charge density rho and the two-body potential phi. The stability and anisotropy of each structure were estimated and compared with the available experimental data.

Shape of Asteroid 4769 Castalia (1989 PB) from Inversion of Radar Images

The inversion of previously reported, delay-Doppler images of Castalia yields a 167-parameter, three-dimensional shape model that is bifurcated into two distinct irregular, kilometer-sized lobes. The crevice that separates the lobes has an average depth of between 100 and 150 meters and is oriented roughly perpendicular to the asteroid's longest dimension. The constrained least-squares reconstruction method introduced here can be used to determine the shape, spin vector, and radar-scattering properties of any asteroid or comet for which delay-Doppler images provide sufficient signal-to-noise ratio, orientational coverage, and spatial resolution.

Macrosegregation During Dendritic Arrayed Growth of Hypoeutectic Pb-Sn Alloys: Influence of Primary Arm Spacing and Mushy Zone Length

Thermosolutal convection in the dendritic mushy zone occurs during directional solidification of hypoeutectic lead tin alloys in a positive thermal gradient, with the melt on the top and the solid below. This results in macrosegregation along the length of the solidified samples. The extent of macrosegregation increases with increasing primary dendrite spacings for constant mushy zone length. For constant primary spacings, the macrosegregation increases with decreasing mushy zone length. Presence of convection reduces the primary dendrite spacings. However, convection in the interdendritic melt has significantly more influence on the spacings as compared with that in the overlying melt, which is caused by the solutal buildup at the dendrite tips.

Exclusive measurements of light fragment production at forward angles in Ne-Pb and Ne-NaF collisions at E/A=400 MeV and 800 MeV

Emission of light fragments at small angles is studied in relativistic heavy ion collisions using the Diogene plastic wall for both symmetrical and non-symmetrical target-projectile systems with 400 MeV per nucleon and 800 MeV per nucleon incident neon nuclei. Efficiency of multiplicity measurements in the small angle range for the selection of central or peripheral collisions is confirmed for asymmetric systems. Differential production cross sections of Z = 1 fragments show evidence for the existence of two emitting sources. The apparent temperature of each source is obtained from comparison with a thermodynamical model.

A-site- and/or B-site-modified PbZrTiO3 materials and (Pb, Sr, Ca, Ba, Mg) (Zr, Ti, Nb, Ta)O3 films having utility in ferroelectric random access memories and high performance thin film microactuators

A modified PbZrTiO.sub.3 perovskite crystal material thin film, wherein the PbZrTiO.sub.3 perovskite crystal material includes crystal lattice A-sites and B-sites at least one of which is modified by the presence of a substituent selected from the group consisting of (i) A-site substituents consisting of Sr, Ca, Ba and Mg, and (ii) B-site substituents selected from the group consisting of Nb and Ta. The perovskite crystal thin film material may be formed by liquid delivery MOCVD from metalorganic precursors of the metal components of the thin film, to form PZT and PSZT, and other piezoelectric and ferroelectric thin film materials. The thin films of the invention have utility in non-volatile ferroelectric memory devices (NV-FeRAMs), and in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) as sensor and/or actuator elements, e.g., high speed digital system actuators requiring low input power levels.

Standards for Analysis of Ce, La, Pb, Rb, Se, Sr, Y, AND Zr in Rock Samples Using Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy and X-ray Fluorescence

Analytical geochemistry has long depended on the availability of robust suites of rock standards with well-characterized compositions. Standard rock powders for wet chemistry and x-ray fluorescence were initially characterized and supplied to the community by the U.S. Geological Survey, which continues to distribute a few dozen standards. Many other rock standards have subsequently been developed by organizations such as the Centre de Recherches Pétrographiques et Géochimiques (CRPG) and Brammer Standard Company, Inc.

Where are the Shocked Grains in the Hadean Zircon Record? Insights on the Preservation of Shocked Zircon and Their U-Pb Systematics

While the earliest history of many planetary bodies within the inner Solar System is dominated by intense bombardment, this record is missing from Earth due to active tectonics and erosion. Where-as rocks from the earliest history of Earth are absent, mineral relics, such as ancient detrital zircon concentrated in sediments within the Jack Hills, Narryer, Illara and Maynard Hills greenstone belts of the Yilgarn Craton in Western Australia preserve a record of this time.Shock in zircon: During shock deformation, resulting from hyper-velocity impact, zircon can be modified in crystallographically-controlled ways. This includes the development of planar and subplanar low-angle grain boundaries, the formation of mechanical twins, transformation to the high pressure polymorph reidite, development of polycrystalline microtexture, and dissociation to its dioxide constituents SiO2 and ZrO2.

Implications of using MERRA-2 cloud water in aerosol wet scavenging for Pb-210 surface concentrations and vertical profiles in GEOS-Chem

Precipitation scavenging is the dominant loss process for a whole suite of aerosols but model parameterizations of this process are highly uncertain, substantially contributing to large uncertainties in the simulated loadings and radiative forcing of aerosols. Lead-210 (210Pb, radioactive half-life of 22.3 years) is produced by radioactive decay of soil-emitted gaseous 222Rn. It attaches to ambient submicron aerosols and is subject to precipitation scavenging processes. Liu et al. [2001] estimated the global mean lifetime of tropospheric 210Pb aerosols to be ~9 days using the GEOS-Chem model. Luo et al. [2019, 2020] provided an option to use MERRA-2 cloud water in the model aerosol scavenging scheme. In this study, we examine the impact of this revision on 210Pb simulations and compare results with climatological observations of 210Pb surface and UT/LS concentrations, as well as aircraft profile measurements from eleven NASA field missions.
