Mapping of hydrothermal alternation zones and regional rock types using computer enhanced ERTS MSS images

A combination of digital computer processing and color compositing of ERTS MSS images has been used to map hydrothermal alternation zones and regional rock types in south-central Nevada. The technique is based on enhancement of subtle visible and near infrared reflectivity differences between mineralogically dissimilar rocks, especially unaltered and altered rocks. MSS spectral bands are ratioed, pixel by pixel, in the computer and subsequently stretched. These ratio values are used to produce a new black and white image which shows the subtle spectral reflectivity differences. Additional enhancement is achieved by preparing color composites of two or more stretched ratio images. The choice of MSS bands for rationing depends on the spectral reflectance properties of the rocks to be discriminated. Although this technique is in the initial stage of development and is untested in other areas, it already appears to have considerable potential for targeting mineral prospects and for regional geologic mapping.

Mariner 9 extended mission sequence design optimization

This paper discusses the Mariner 9 science sequence design during the extended mission including science objectives, and mission operation and spacecraft constraints. The primary objectives of the extended mission were to complete 100% mapping of the planet, photograph special interest targets, obtain high resolution coverage of prospective Viking landing sites, and to function through the superior conjunction period. The optimization of planet viewing characteristics by moving to different celestial reference stars, and the techniques used to efficiently allocate science links to data taking days are described.

A priori estimate of the quality of a data compression system based on statistical characteristics of the sensors used

Knowledge of the composition and certain statistical characteristics of the output signals of the scientific instruments on board a space vehicle allows determination of possible signal processing algorithms in the system and to evaluate the prospects for utilization of data reduction. A method is presented to estimate the compression factor of an on-board data collection and processing system with known mean activities of the sensors used and unknown mutual correlation of their output signals.

Geological applications of LANDSAT-1 imagery to the Great Salt Lake area

The ERTS program has been designed as a research and development tool to demonstrate that remote sensing from orbital altitudes is a feasible and practical approach to efficient management of earth resources. From this synoptic view and repetitive coverage provided by ERTS imagery of the Great Salt Lake area, large geological and structural features, trends, and patterns have been identified and mapped. A comparative analysis of lineaments observed in September and December data was conducted, existing mineral locations were plotted, and areas considered prospective for mineralization based on apparent structure-mineralization relationships were defined. The additional information obtained using ERTS data provides an added source of information to aid in the development of more effective mineral exploration programs.

Skylab program: Earth resources experiment package. Sensor performance evaluation. Volume 6: (S194) L-band radiometer

Analysis of the Skylab S194 L-band radiometer experiment data provided significant results pertaining to the actual realized performance during flight. Analysis of preflight test data provided a baseline from which to compare the experiment flight performance, although many radiometric data performance capabilities could only be demonstrated in the flight environment. The final results establish the overall hardware performance of the S194 system from which prospective users of the flight data can refer for various scientific applications. Instrument performance is presented in the areas of housekeeping and internal calibration parameters, antenna system integrity, dynamic range, linearity, precision, resolution, and absolute accuracy. Supplementary evaluations were included for an error analysis of system calibration stability. Results of the evaluation show that the instrument performance was generally as expected. Conclusions are drawn from the final evaluation results, and recommendations for improving the effectiveness of a future program are offered.

Multidisciplinary geoscientific experiments in central Europe

The author has identified the following significant results. Studies were carried out in the fields of geology-pedology, coastal dynamics, geodesy-cartography, geography, and data processing. In geology-pedology, a comparison of ERTS image studies with extensive ground data led to a better understanding of the relationship between vegetation, soil, bedrock, and other geologic features. Findings in linear tectonics gave better insight in orogeny and ore deposit development for prospecting. Coastal studies proved the value of ERTS images for the updating of nautical charts, as well as small scale topographic maps. A plotter for large scale high speed image generation from CCT was developed.

A preliminary study of air-pollution measurement by active remote-sensing techniques

Air pollutants are identified, and the needs for their measurement from satellites and aircraft are discussed. An assessment is made of the properties of these pollutants and of the normal atmosphere, including interactions with light of various wavelengths and the resulting effects on transmission and scattering of optical signals. The possible methods for active remote measurement are described; the relative performance capabilities of double-ended and single-ended systems are compared qualitatively; and the capabilities of the several single-ended or backscattering techniques are compared quantitatively. The differential-absorption lidar (DIAL) technique is shown to be superior to the other backscattering techniques. The lidar system parameters and their relationships to the environmental factors and the properties of pollutants are examined in detail. A computer program that models both the atmosphere (including pollutants) and the lidar system is described. The performance capabilities of present and future lidar components are assessed, and projections are made of prospective measurement capabilities for future lidar systems. Following a discussion of some important operational factors that affect both the design and measurement capabilities of airborne and satellite-based lidar systems, the extensive analytical results obtained through more than 1000 individual cases analyzed with the aid of the computer program are summarized and discussed. The conclusions are presented. Recommendations are also made for additional studies to investigate cases that could not be explored adequately during this study.

A search for sulfide-bearing areas using LANDSAT-1 data and digital image-processing techniques

Two experiments were conducted using LANDSAT-1 multispectral scanner data to identify ground features that are indicators of sulfide-bearing rock. A nearby known sulfide deposit was used as a control. In the first experiment, false-color composites were examined visually to locate possible favorable areas; in the second, favorable areas were classified by digital-computer processing. The results of the experiment show that outcrops of hydrothermally altered and mineralized rock can be identified from LANDSAT-1 data under favorable conditions. The empirical method of digital-computer classification of the multispectral scanner data was relatively unrefined and rapid. The five mineralized prospecting sites identified are in locations that the geologist would not have selected as favorable on the basis of geologic knowledge or photogeologic interpretation at the time of the investigation.
