Minor elements and cathodoluminescence of Mg-rich olivines from Murchison and Allende carbonaceous meteorites

The morphology and inclusions of individual Mg rich olivine grains from C2 chondrites provide disputed evidence for origin either from a liquid or a vapor. Olivine grains from Murchison (C2) and Allende (C3) meteorites were examined to extend data on Belgica 7904 (C2. Cathodoluminescence revealed the relation of chemical zoning to external shape and inclusions. High precision electron probe analyses of selected spots for Na, Al, P, Ca, Ti, Cr and Mn provided chemical constraints on the source material. From several possible explanations tentative suggestions are for at least two stages: (1) growth of the blue core from a vapor enriched in refractory elements (hence lack of inclusions); and (2) growth of red/dark rim from an unenriched liquid which entrapped the blue core. Mechanical transfer may be involved. The channels and networks are puzzling at this time. Whatever the true explanation, a complex history is needed for a simple mineral, and further study should provide additional restraints on formation of carbonaceous meteorites.

The physical metallurgy of mechanically-alloyed, dispersion-strengthened Al-Li-Mg and Al-Li-Cu alloys

Powder processing of Al-Li-Mg and Al-Li-Cu alloys by mechanical alloying (MA) is described, with a discussion of physical and mechanical properties of early experimental alloys of these compositions. The experimental samples were mechanically alloyed in a Szegvari attritor, extruded at 343 and 427 C, and some were solution-treated at 520 and 566 C and naturally, as well as artificially, aged at 170, 190, and 210 C for times of up to 1000 hours. All alloys exhibited maximum hardness after being aged at 170 C; lower hardness corresponds to the solution treatment at 566 C than to that at 520 C. A comparison with ingot metallurgy alloys of the same composition shows the MA material to be stronger and more ductile. It is also noted that properly aged MA alloys can develop a better combination of yield strength and notched toughness at lower alloying levels.

Simultaneous observations of Ca II K and Mg II k in T Tauri stars

The first simultaneous, calibrated observations of the Ca II K and Mg II k resonance lines in T Tauri stars are presented. It is found that for T Tauri stars with mass greater than 1.5 solar mass, which have radiative cores and tend to be fast rotators, the k line seems to arise in an extended region (probably also responsible for the H-alpha emission), whereas the K line apparently originates closer to the highly inhomogeneous stellar surface. The lower mass stars, which are fully convective and tend to be slow rotators, are more easily described by a largely chromospheric model, consistent with main-sequence activity structures but at greater values of the nonradiative flux. The strongest emission-line stars in the low-mass group, however, are also likely to have extended k line regions.

Differential electron scattering cross sections for the 3 (2)S to 3 (2)P0 h, k transitions in Mg II - Comparison of experiment and theory

Angular differential electron scattering cross sections are reported for the unresolved inelastic 3s (2)S to 3p (2)P0 h, k transitions in Mg II for the first time. Relative differential cross sections have been measured at 35 eV and 50 eV in the angular range of Theta between 6 and 17 deg using the newly developed electron energy loss technique in a crossed electron-ion beam geometry. Theoretical values have been calculated in a five-state close-coupling approximation in which 3s, 3p, 3d, 4s, and 4p states were included, and to which measurements were normalized at Theta = 12 deg.

Analytical electron microscopy of Mg-SiO smokes - A comparison with infrared and XRD studies

Analytical electron microscopy conducted for Mg-SiO smokes (experimentally obtained from samples previously characterized by IR spectroscopy) indicates that the microcrystallinity content of unannealed smokes increases with increased annealing for up to 30 hr. The growth of forsterite microcrystallites in the initially nonstoichiometric smokes may give rise to the contemporaneous growth of the SiO polymorph tridymite and MgO; after 4 hr of annealing, these react to form enstatite. It is suggested that XRD analysis and IR spectroscopy should be conducted in conjunction with detailed analytical electron microscopy for the detection of emerging crystallinity in vapor-phase condensates.

An evaluation of the benefits of utilizing rapid solidification for development of 2XXX (Al-Cu-Mg) alloys

The advantages of rapid solidification processing over ingot metallurgy processing in the development of 2XXX aluminum alloy compositions were evaluated using a similarly processed ingot metallurgy (IM) control alloy. The powder metallurgy (PM) alloy extrusions showed a reduced age-hardening response in comparison with similar IM compositions, with higher tensile properties for naturally aged extrusions but lower properties for artificially aged ones. However, the tensile properties of naturally and artificially aged PM alloy extrusions based on a version of IM 2034 alloy, but containing 0.6 weight percent zirconium, were comparable to those of the IM control extrusions and had significantly superior combinations of strength and toughness. The tensile properties of this PM alloy showed even greater advantage in 6.4-mm (0.25-in.) and 1.8-mm (0.070-in.) plate and sheet, the yield strength being about 68 MPa (10 ksi) greater than reported values for the IM 2034 alloy sheet. An artificially aged PM alloy based on 2219 alloy also showed a strength and strength-toughness combination comparable to those of the PM Al-Cu-Mg-Zr alloy, substantially outperforming the IM 2219 alloy. These results show that rapid solidification offers the flexibility needed to modify conventional IM compositions to produce new alloy compositions with superior mechanical properties.

Sunspot umbral oscillations in Mg II k

Time series observations of the profile of the Mg II k line 2795.52 A have been obtained in five sunspots with the Ultraviolet Spectrometer and Polarimeter on the Solar Maximum Mission. The three sunspots with umbrae larger than the 3 x 3 arcsec pixel size show significant oscillations in integrated line intensity and line centroid, with frequencies in the range 5.29-7.55 mHz (periods of 132-190 s). The frequencies of significant peaks in average umbral power spectra agree well with the frequencies of the three lowest-frequency transmission peaks predicted by a model of resonant transmission of acoustic waves. If radiative delays are unimportant, and the line centroid can be interpreted straightforwardly as a Doppler shift, the measured velocity-intensity phase differences indicate the superposition of upward-propagating and downward-propagating waves in the umbral chromosphere; this is further evidence for the resonant transmission model. A single, quiet sun time series of k core profiles yields power spectra and a phase difference consistent with the existence of a chromospheric p-mode.

Isotopic studies of Mg, Fe, Mo, Ru and W in Fremdlinge from Allende refractory inclusions

This paper presents the first isotopic measurements, made with an ion microprobe, of Mg, Fe, Mo, Ru, and W in Fremdlinge and refractory metal nuggets from Allende meteorite. No non-mass-dependent deviations exceeding 1 percent from normal solar isotopic abundances were found for any of the elements analyzed, despite the unusual mineralogy of Fremdlinge and the extreme enrichment in refractory siderophile elements. It is concluded that the chemical, petrologic, and isotopic data on Fremdlinge are most plausibly interpreted in terms of the origin of Fremdlinge within the solar nebula.

Phase relations of a high-Mg basalt from the Aleutian Island arc - Implications for primary island arc basalts and high-Al basalts

An experimental investigation of a primitive high-Mg basalt, MK-15, collected from lava flows of the Unalaska Island in the Aleutian Island arc has been conducted in order to study primary and parental island arc basalts and the development of island arc magmas. The results suggest a model in which high-Al basalts are generated by moderate amounts of crystal fractionation from more primitive (high Mg/Mg + Fe, lower Al2O3) basaltic magmas near the arc crust-mantle boundary. Somewhere between 20-30 depth, significant amounts of clinopyroxene and olivine, with lesser amounts of spinel and possibly amphibole, fractionate, forming layer of olivine-clinopyroxenite at the base of the arc crust.

Mg I as a probe of the solar chromosphere - The atomic model

This paper presents a complete atomic model for Mg I line synthesis, where all the atomic parameters are based on recent experimental and theoretical data. It is shown how the computed profiles at 4571 A and 5173 A are influenced by the choice of these parameters and the number of levels included in the model atom. In addition, observed profiles of the 5173 A b2 line and theoretical profiles for comparison (based on a recent atmospheric model for the average quiet sun) are presented.

The origin of pristine KREEP - Effects of mixing between UrKREEP and the magmas parental to the Mg-rich cumulates

The fact that pristine KREEP basalts generally have bulk-rock molar MgO/(MgO+FeO) ratios lower than average for the lunar crust despite their extraordinarily high incompatible element contents is discussed. Pristine KREEP basalts also have primitive Ni contents compared to mare basalts with comparable REE contents. It is suggested that these facts can be explained through mixing between ancient KREEP precursor materials and primitive Mg-rich melts. Finite-difference models of this mixing, followed by anorthosite assimilation and fractional crystallization provide satisfactory fits to the composition of these basalts. It is suggested that this is a further confirmation of the magmasphere hypothesis.

MG 1654+1346 - An Einstein Ring image of a quasar radio lobe

VLA radio images of MG 1654+1346, a candidate for an Einstein Ring gravitational lens, reveal two components which are separated by about 7 arcsec. Two optical counterparts, a 19-mag galaxy coincident with the center of the radio ring and a blue 21-mag stellar object located about 3 arcsec northeast of the galaxy, are identified. A model representing the source as a quasar with two extended radio lobes and the lens as an elliptical potential at the position of the galaxy is found to reasonably reproduce the radio observations.

Spectral characteristics of chlorites and Mg-serpentines using high-resolution reflectance spectroscopy

High-resolution reflectance spectroscopy is used to determine the spectral characteristics of serpentines and chlorites. The structure and chemistry of hydrous layered silicates are reviewed. The possibility of distinguishing between isochemical end-members of the Mg-rich serpentine group and the capability of recognizing spectral variations in chlorites as a function of Fe/Mg ratio are demonstrated. Consideration is given to the application of the findings to terrestrial, asteroid, and meteorite studies.

Structure and properties during aging of an ultra-high strength Al-Cu-Li-Ag-Mg alloy

The structure and properties of the strengthening phases formed during aging in an Al-Cu-Li-Ag-Mg alloy (Weldalite 049) were elulcidated, by following the development of the microstructure by means of TEM. The results of observations showed that the Weldalite 049 alloy has a series of unusual and technologically useful combinations of mechanical properties in different aging conditions, such as natural aging without prior cold work to produce high strengths, a reversion temper of lower yield strength and unusually high ductility, a room temperature reaging of the reversion temper eventually leading to the original T4 hardness, and ultrahigh-strength T6 properties.

Flare heating and ionization of the low solar chromosphere. I - Inversion methods for Mg I 4571 and 5173

Various methods of inverting solar Mg I 4571 and 5173 spectral line observations are examined to find the best method of using these lines to calculate the vertical temperature and electron density structure around the temperature minimum region. Following a perturbation analysis by Mein (1971), a Fredholm integral equation of the first kind is obtained which can be inverted to yield these temperature and density structures as a function of time. Several inversion methods are tested and compared. The methods are used to test data as well as to a subset of observations of these absorption lines taken on February 3, 1986 before and during a solar flare. A small but significant increase is found in the temperature and a relatively large increase in the electron density during this flare. The observations are inconsistent with heating and ionization by an intense beam of electrons and with ionization by UV photoionization of Si I.

Effect of a prior stretch on the aging response of an Al-Cu-Li-Ag-Mg-Zr alloy

The effect of a prior stretching of an aluminum alloy Al-5.3Cu-1.4Li-0.4Ag-0.4Mg-0.17Zr (in wt pct) on the microstructure that develops during aging of this alloy was investigated by comparing TEM and SAD observations and hardness curves with results for the unstretched alloy. The results suggest that stretching introduces a significant number of dislocations which may act as vacanacy sinks by sweeping vacancies away and thereby decreasing the vacancy concentration available for influencing the natural aging response. In the stretched and near-peak aged condition, a fine homogeneous distribution of T1, theta-prime, and S-prime phases were observed in an alpha solid solution matrix. Upon overaging, virtually all of the theta-prime and most of the S-prime phases were found to dissolve, leaving behind a microstructure of T1 precipitates.

Evaluation of the microstructure of Al-Cu-Li-Ag-Mg Weldalite (tm) alloys, part 4

Weldalite (trademark) 049 is an Al-Cu-Li-Ag-Mg alloy designed to have ultrahigh strength and to serve in aerospace applications. The alloy displays significantly higher strength than competitive alloys in both naturally aged and artificially aged tempers. The strengthening phases in such tempers have been identified to, in part, explain the mechanical properties attained. In general, the alloy is strengthened by delta prime Al3Li and Guinier-Preston (GP) zones in the naturally aged tempers. In artificially aged tempers in slightly underaged conditions, strengthening is provided by several phases including GP zones, theta prime Al2Cu, S prime Al2CuMg, T(sub 1) Al2CuLi, and possibly a new phase. In the peak strength artificially aged tempers, T(sub 1) is the predominant strengthening phase.

Structure and properties during aging of an Al-Cu-Li-Ag-Mg alloy, Weldalite (tm) 049

An Al-Cu-Li-Ag-Mg alloy, Weldalite (trademark) 049, was recently introduced as an ultra-high strength alloy (7000 MPa yield strength in artificially aged tempers) with good weldability. In addition, the alloy exhibits an extraordinary natural aging response (440 MPa yield strength (YS) in the unstretch condition) and a high ductility reversion condition which may be useful as a cold-forming temper. In contrast to other Al-Li alloys, these properties can essentially be obtained with or without a stretch or other coldworking operation prior to aging. Preliminary studies have revealed that the T4 temper (no stretch, natural age) is strengthened by a combination of GP zones and delta prime (Al3Li). The T6 temper (no stretch, aged at 180 C to peak strength) was reported to be strengthened primarily by T(sub 1) phase (Al2CuLi) with a minor presence of a theta prime like (Al2Cu) phase. On the other hand, a similar but lower solute containing alloy was reported to contain omega, (stoichiometry unknown), theta prime, and S prime in the peak strength condition. The purpose of this study is to further elucidate the strengthening phases in Weldalite (trademark) 049 in the unstretched tempers, and to follow the development of the microstructure from the T4 temper through reversion (180 C for 5 to 45 minutes) to the T6 temper.
