Towards improved speed and accuracy of laser powder bed fusion simulations via representation of multiple time scales

Here, we report the result of investigations into alternative representations of the temporal evolution of the laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process. In order to provide the reader with sufficient context for the following discussion, the modeling challenge and its underlying cause, as well as current attempts to provide a satisfactory solution, will be discussed. Next, the author will describe two numerical methods (multirate time integration and parallel-in-time) to better represent the temporal scales of the problem. Finally, the results of applying these methods to a two-dimensional version of the heat transfer portion of the LPBF problem will be presented, reporting on both convergence and performance behavior, which indicate the possibility of significant speedup of solution calculations (40–100 times), along with well-characterized effects on solution accuracy.

Sequence Analysis of 20,453 Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 Genomes from the Houston Metropolitan Area Identifies the Emergence and Widespread Distribution of Multiple Isolates of All Major Variants of Concern

Since the beginning of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, there has been international concern about the emergence of virus variants with mutations that increase transmissibility, enhance escape from the human immune response, or otherwise alter biologically important phenotypes. In late 2020, several variants of concern emerged globally, including the UK variant (B.1.1.7), the South Africa variant (B.1.351), Brazil variants (P.1 and P.2), and two related California variants of interest (B.1.429 and B.1.427). These variants are believed to have enhanced transmissibility. For the South Africa and Brazil variants, there is evidence that mutations in spike protein permit it to escape from some vaccines and therapeutic monoclonal antibodies. On the basis of our extensive genome sequencing program involving 20,453 coronavirus disease 2019 patient samples collected from March 2020 to February 2021, we report identification of all six of these SARS-CoV-2 variants among Houston Methodist Hospital (Houston, TX) patients residing in the greater metropolitan area. Although these variants are currently at relatively low frequency (aggregate of 1.1%) in the population, they are geographically widespread. Houston is the first city in the United States in which active circulation of all six current variants of concern has been documented by genome sequencing. Finally, as vaccine deployment accelerates, increased genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 is essential to understanding the presence, frequency, and medical impact of consequential variants and their patterns and trajectory of dissemination.

Multiple redox mechanisms for water-gas shift reaction on Fe 3 O 4 (1 1 1) surface: A density functional theory and mean-field microkinetic modeling study

In this work, we investigated redox mechanisms for the high temperature (HT) water–gas shift reaction (WGSR) on the Fe 3 O 4 (1 1 1) surface using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and mean-field microkinetic modeling (MKM). The redox pathways branched into three Langmuir-Hinshelwood processes (LH1, LH2 and LH3) and one Mars-van-Krevelen (MVK) process (in the presence of oxygen vacancy) from multidentate binding of CO and CO 2 over four available reactive sites (Fe oct2 , Fe tet1 , Fe bridge, and O1). We found that the LH1 and LH2 processes have CO adsorption at a single iron site (Fe oct2 or Fe tet1 ), while the LH3 and MVK processes have stronger chemisorption of CO or CO 2 by both the Fe oct2 site and the O 1 site. From the mechanistic study of these reaction path, we recognized that availability of O 1 sites was key to proceed to either CO oxidation by the single site (LH1, LH2) or by the dual site (LH3, MVK). We observed that the reaction energetics were significantly different in the CO oxidation steps, where the single or dual site results in markedly different apparent activation energy (73–281 kJ/mol) and reaction rates (10 -3 –10 -10 mol∙m -2 ∙s -1 ) among the four reaction mechanisms. The utilization of mean field MKM with DFT reaction energetics helps explain the experimental debates for the catalytic reaction details as well as providing a possible direction to engineer the catalyst with higher activity.

Hybrid geological modeling: Combining machine learning and multiple-point statistics

Accurately modeling and constructing a geologically realistic subsurface model remains an outstanding problem as the morphology controls the flow behaviors. Particularly, one of the pattern-based methods, namely cross-correlation based simulation, has been proved to be an effective way to reconstruct a realistic model, at both small and large scales. However, conditioning to point data in the large-scale problems is still a crucial issue in these algorithms, since there is always a trade-off between the quality of the realizations and the degree of point data reproduction. Specifically, it is not practical to build a training image (TI) which includes all the possibilities and variabilities. Therefore, finding a pattern that can represent the point data and, at the same time, preserving the connectivities is difficult. This leads to producing highly-connected realizations with a significant mismatch or poor models with a reasonable degree of point data reproduction. To accurately reproduce the densely distributed hard data, pixel-based methods can also produce some unrealistic artifacts around the hard data. In this paper, to overcome this challenge, however, we use pattern-based methods as they often produce more disconnected geobodies when dealing with dense hard data, and proposed a hybrid algorithm using the pattern-based methods and convolutional neural network (CNN). The trained CNN model is utilized to improve the quality of conditioning to point data for the original realizations generated by the pattern-based algorithm. As such, the mismatch locations are identified, and the same regions are used in the training of CNN to mimic the procedure through which a missing region can be filled. To evaluate the performance of the proposed hybrid algorithm, it is tested on cases with different dimensions and different numbers of facies. Then, the newly improved realizations are compared with the initial realizations generated by the pattern-based algorithm. The comparison is also conducted by the flow simulation test. And it indicates that the proposed hybrid algorithm can better reproduce the point data, while the connectivities are better preserved.

Tailored mesoporous structures of lignin-derived nano-carbons for multiple applications

This work uses a one-step KOH activation for lignin precursors to produce ultra-high mesoporous activated carbons (ACs) with an unprecedented combination of the surface area of 3207 m 2 g -1 and mesopore ratio of 76%. The ACs are applied for supercapacitors (SCs) and methylene blue (MB) adsorption. The capacitance of the SCs in the three-electrode system reaches 812.3 F g -1 and demonstrates a remarkable maximum MB adsorption capacity of 1250 mg g -1 . By modifying the process conditions, the mesopore ratio of ACs could be controlled from 10% to 80%. Compared with one-step activation, a two-step method produced microporous carbons with a lower surface area of 1227 m 2 g -1 and a high micropore ratio of 73%. The capacitance of SCs with two-step ACs reached 228.1 F g -1 and the maximum adsorption capacity of 476.19 mg g -1 for MB adsorption. The two-step method limited the surface area but had a higher oxygen surface functionality, benefiting its electrochemical performance. A techno-economic analysis reveals that the one-step KOH activation-based process develops ACs with a minimum selling price of $7648/ton. In conclusion, this work demonstrates tuning the processing-structure-property-performance relationship of lignin-based ACs to make an economically viable domestic carbon source.

Scalable membrane-less microbial electrolysis cell with multiple compact electrode assemblies for high performance hydrogen production

Bioelectrochemical hydrogen production via microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) is a promising method for sustainable energy production and decarbonization of energy systems. However, the application of MECs is limited by the electrochemical performance, scalability, and the cost associated with expensive materials. Here, in this study, a scalable MEC (500 mL) with novel compact electrode assemblies and high electrode surface area to volume ratio (160 m 2 /m 3 ) was designed and constructed. The use of membranes, precious metal catalyst, and current collectors with high costs was avoided. A high current density at the steady state of 49.5 ± 5.3 A/m 2 was achieved using acetate as the substrate with phosphate buffer under the applied voltage of 1.01 V. The corresponding volumetric current density was 3948 ± 422 A/m 3 . The compact electrode assembly design limited methane production rate to 3.9 ± 0.2 L/L/D, while achieving a hydrogen production rate of 33.7 ± 1.7 L/L/D. With the suppression of microbial hydrogen consumption, the hydrogen production rate was 39.8 ± 1.9 L/L/D, higher by almost one order of magnitude than those of MECs with scaling up attempts. The compact electrode configuration reduced internal resistance to 88.5 ± 4.4 Ω cm 2 . The energy efficiency based on input electricity was 146 ± 7 % to 189 ± 9 % within the applied voltage range of 0.71 to 1.05 V. The results in this study demonstrated successful scaling up of high performance small MECs and offered a new possible approach of scaling up MECs by stacking high-performance subunits, with no trade-offs on electrochemical performance.

Symbiotic bacteriophages exhibit multiple adaptive strategies in activated sludge flocs and contribute to floc stability

Despite the importance of phages for the dynamics and functions of microbial communities, it remains largely unexplored how symbiotic phages adapt in activated sludge systems and influence microbial aggregate stability, which is critical for clarification and reliable performance. Here, based on 12,127 phage contigs recovered from 12 activated sludge microbiomes, the symbiotic phages exhibited broad host ranges and infected dominant prokaryotes in activated sludge. Moreover, these phage communities exhibited high lysogenicity (49% to 66% lysogenic phages) and harbored diverse auxiliary metabolic genes (AMGs) that could enhance microbial aggregate stability, such as genes coding for lipopolysaccharide, peptidoglycan, and extracellular polysaccharide biosynthesis. Additionally, prokaryotic antiviral systems were widely distributed in dominant prokaryotes, particularly the Restriction-Modification (RM) and CRISPR-Cas systems, which could mitigate potential harmful phage infections. Overall, this study reveals the contemporary beneficial relationship between phages and prokaryotic hosts in activated sludge microbiomes and the potential benefits of symbiotic phages on floc stability.
