Characterization of crystalline LARC-TPI powder

LARC-TPI, a linear aromatic polyimide, developed by NASA Langley Research Center in the late 1970's had thermoplastic character, but its melt-flow properties were much lower than those of conventional thermoplastics. An imidized version of the LARC-TPI molding powder was submitted to NASA-Langley for evaluation. The initial broad melt of this material occurs in the 270 C range and reorders to higher melting forms, depending on the physical and thermal treatments. Rheological characterization of this polymer shows it to have a very low melt viscosity, which increases as the melted specie transforms to other crystalline forms with higher melting temperatures.

Thermoplastic matrix composites - LARC-TPI, polyimidesulfone and their blends

Composites were fabricated from unidirectional unsized AS-4 carbon fiber and two baseline polyimides: benzophenone dianhydride-3,3'-diaminodiphenylsulfone (PISO2) and benzophenone dianhydride-3,3'-diaminobenzophenone (LARC-TPI). In addition, each polymer solution prior to prepregging was doped with various amounts of crystalline LARC-TPI powder to enhance melt flow during press molding. The 2:1, 1:1, and 1:2 ratios of crystalline to amorphous resin, respectively, were studied in the LARC-TPI system and the 1:2 ratio in the PISO2 system. Matrix characterization, prepreg fabrication/characterization and composite fabrication and physical/mechanical properties are described. The latter include three point short beam shear and flexure, dry and wet, as well as fracture toughness properties in selected compositions.

Optimal cure cycle design of a resin-fiber composite laminate

Fibers reinforced composites are used in many applications. The composite parts and structures are often manufactured by curing the prepreg or unmolded material. The magnitudes and durations of the cure temperature and the cure pressure applied during the cure process have significant consequences on the performance of the finished product. The goal of this study is to exploit the potential of applying the optimization technique to the cure cycle design. The press molding process of a polyester is used as an example. Various optimization formulations for the cure cycle design are investigated. Recommendations are given for further research in computerizing the cure cycle design.

Application of copper-carbon fiber composites to power semiconductor devices

Copper-carbon composite electrodes are used in a series of power semiconductor devices, i.e., resin molded diodes, button-type diodes, stud-type diodes, power modules, and integrated circuit igniter modules. The properties of these power semiconductor devices compare favorably with those conventional devices using Mo or W electrodes. In thermal fatigue tests, no degradation in the electrical and mechanical characteristics of these devices are observed. The new composite electrode with carbon fibers satisfies all of the major requirements for the electrodes in power semiconductor devices.

Improved silicon nitride for advanced heat engines

Silicon nitride is a high temperature material currently under consideration for heat engine and other applications. The objective is to improve the net shape fabrication technology of Si3N4 by injection molding. This is to be accomplished by optimizing the process through a series of statistically designed matrix experiments. To provide input to the matrix experiments, a wide range of alternate materials and processing parameters was investigated throughout the whole program. The improvement in the processing is to be demonstrated by a 20 percent increase in strength and a 100 percent increase in the Weibull modulus over that of the baseline material. A full characterization of the baseline process was completed. Material properties were found to be highly dependent on each step of the process. Several important parameters identified thus far are the starting raw materials, sinter/hot isostatic pressing cycle, powder bed, mixing methods, and sintering aid levels.

Flexible tactile sensing arrays for robotics: Architectural robustness and yield considerations

No tactile sensor array developed to date fills all, nor even most, of the requirements of: (1) many sensor elements to minimize tactile imaging time, (2) close spacing of small sensing elements for fine spatial discrimination, (3) ability to be molded to a convex fingertip surface for taction on concave surfaces, (4) ability to sense both force and temperature in order to fully mimic biological touch, (5) tolerance to overscale forces without damage, and (6) graceful failure in use, i.e., functional survival of most of the array when part of it is damaged, well. Several investigators have recently developed tactile sensing arrays suitable for imaging shapes on hard flat surfaces, but not well suited for taction on curved surfaces. Others have developed single tactile sensors suitable for incorporation into arrays, which will probably prove uneconomical when large numbers of sensors are needed. Still others have developed flexible capacitive arrays suitable for use on curved surfaces but incapable of obtaining temperature or proximity data. A technology is being developed herein suitable to the achievement of all of the above goals, and to incrementally demonstrate useful steps toward those goals.

PMR polyimide compositions for improved performance at 371 C

Studies were conducted to identify matrix resins which have potential for use at 371 C (700 F). Utilizing PMR methodology, neat resin moldings were prepared with various monomer reactants and screened for thermo-oxidative stability at 371 C (700 F) under both ambient and a four-atmosphere air pressure. The results of the resin screening studies indicate that high molecular weight (HMW) formulated resins of first (PMR-15) and second (PMR-II) generation PMR materials exhibit lower levels of weight loss at 371 C (700) than PMR-15 and PMR-II resins. The resin systems which exhibited the best overall balance of processability, Tg and thermo-oxidative stability at 371 C were used to prepare unidirectional Celion 6000 and T-40R graphite fiber laminates. Laminates were evaluated for thermo-oxidative stability and 371 C mechanical properties. Results of the laminate evaluation studies indicate that two of the resin compositions have potential for use in 371 C applications. The most promising resin composition provided laminates which exhibited no drop in 371 C mechanical properties and only 11 percent weight loss after 200 hr exposure to atmospheres of air at 371 C.

High temperature polyimide blends

In a continuing effort to synthesize polymers that are readily processable and that exhibit state-of-the-art characteristics, LARC-TPI (Mitsui) and polyimidesulfone (PISO2) were blended and subjected to a limited melt flow and thermal properties characterization. Mitsui Toatsu of Japan, working under a licensing agreement with NASA, synthesized an imidized version of LARC-TPI molding powder that exhibited an extraordinarily high level of softening when heated to 300 C. Subsequently, a study of the calorimetric and rheological properties was accomplished by NASA-Langley on that material. The thermoplastic polyimidesulfone that possesses processability similar to polysulfones and the solvent resistance of the polyimides was synthesized and characterized at NASA-Langley in the early 1980's.

Blends of an ethynyl terminated imidothioether with ethynyl terminated arylene ether oligomers

An evaluation has been undertaken of blends of a novel ethynyl-terminated imidothioether with Udel P1700 polysulfone and ethynyl-terminated arylene ether oligomers. Good to excellent processability was obtained with these blends using compression molding; the cured blends displayed poor-to-good resistance to chloroform and low-to-moderately high fracture toughness, depending on the blends' crosslink density. The flexural strength and modulus of unidirectional carbon graphite laminates prepared with the blended resins were good.

Adhesive properties of LARC-CPI, a new semi-crystalline polyimide

As part of an effort on high temperature structural resins for aerospace applications, a new family of polyimides containing carbon and ether connecting groups between aromatic rings were prepared. Several of these polyimides were semicrystalline. One polyimide, designated LARC-CPI, with a glass transition temperature of 222 C and a crystalline melt temperature of 350 C, was evaluated in the form of an adhesive, film, and molding. Unoriented films exhibited excellent resistance to solvents and strong bases and high tensile properties. Compact tension specimens gave very high fracture toughness values. Titanium tensile shear specimens provided exceptional strength under a variety of test conditions. The chemistry and the physical and mechanical properties of LARC-CPI are discussed.
