Predicting hot electron generation in inertial confinement fusion with particle-in-cell simulations

A series of two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations with speckled laser drivers was carried out to study hot electron generation in direct-drive inertial confinement fusion on OMEGA. Scaling laws were obtained for hot electron fraction and temperature as functions of laser/plasma conditions in the quarter-critical region. Using these scalings and conditions from hydro simulations, the temporal history of hot electron generation can be predicted. The scalings can be further improved to predict hard x-rays for a collection of OMEGA warm target implosions within experimental error bars. Furthermore, these scalings can be readily implemented into inertial confinement fusion design codes.

Voltage Restoration in Microgrids using Temporal Logic Specifications

This paper proposes an energy storage controller synthesis method for voltage restoration in microgrids with respect to temporal logic specifications (TLSs). TLSs is introduced in this paper as a formalism to control the voltage variation of a critical bus against an operational bounds over time. The power system with synchronous generator (SG) connected to a critical load bus is modeled as a set of differential-algebraic equations and a simplified analytical model is derived to describe the voltage variation of this critical bus. The control objective is to schedule an optimal control input signal from a supportive energy storage system (ESS) connected to the critical bus, such that the voltage variation of the latter satisfies the TLSs, such as a finite-time restoration. The proposed control is verified on a lumped distribution system model. With this control diagram, supportive controllers can be designed to make voltage behaviors comply with grid codes and avoid unnecessary relay actions.

Methodology to Establish Performance Targets for Building Energy Codes

This report explains the underlying development of the U.S. NZE building sector performance targets reported in Federal Register Notice XX. This document also includes NZE performance targets for U.S. states, which were developed following the same procedures used to develop the national values. These national and state targets are intended to support the establishment and attainment of NZE goals over time. Where residential and commercial building energy code compliance mechanisms apply to new buildings and major renovations and dictate performance requirements, these targets reflect the recommended, minimum levels of performance. Appendix A provides the performance values and targets by U.S. state for residential and commercial buildings. These include each state’s adopted energy code performance, current published MEC performance value, and a nominal NZE code compliance performance target. The current code and NZE values can be compared to the state adopted code value to indicate the level of advancement needed to move towards recommended NZE building performance levels. Additional supplemental resources are available to support states and local governments ready to move from setting NZE policy goals to adopting NZE codes. More information about these resources and the actions states can take to achieve NZE buildings with energy codes are provided in the body of this document.

Star adaptation for two-algorithms used on serial computers

Two representative algorithms used on a serial computer and presently executed on the Control Data Corporation 6000 computer were adapted to execute efficiently on the Control Data STAR-100 computer. Gaussian elimination for the solution of simultaneous linear equations and the Gauss-Legendre quadrature formula for the approximation of an integral are the two algorithms discussed. A description is given of how the programs were adapted for STAR and why these adaptations were necessary to obtain an efficient STAR program. Some points to consider when adapting an algorithm for STAR are discussed. Program listings of the 6000 version coded in 6000 FORTRAN, the adapted STAR version coded in 6000 FORTRAN, and the STAR version coded in STAR FORTRAN are presented in the appendices.

Orbital Maneuvering Engine Feed System Coupled Stability Investigation, Computer User's Manual

An operating manual for the feed system coupled stability model was given, in partial fulfillment of a program designed to develop, verify, and document a digital computer model that can be used to analyze and predict engine/feed system coupled instabilities in pressure-fed storable propellant propulsion systems over a frequency range of 10 to 1,000 Hz. The first section describes the analytical approach to modelling the feed system hydrodynamics, combustion dynamics, chamber dynamics, and overall engineering model structure, and presents the governing equations in each of the technical areas. This is followed by the program user's guide, which is a complete description of the structure and operation of the computerized model. Last, appendices provide an alphabetized FORTRAN symbol table, detailed program logic diagrams, computer code listings, and sample case input and output data listings.

Assessment of discretization schemes to reduce numerical diffusion in the calculation of complex flows

Comprehensive criteria for evaluating finite-difference schemes to reduce numerical diffusion in the solution of the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations have been established in this study. Several candidate schemes have been examined, based on these criteria. Taylor series analyses, model problem studies and examination of the difference equations have been used to assess the schemes. Two schemes, which showed the most promise, and satisfied a majority of the criteria, are recommended for incorporation into two dimensional and three dimensional computer codes for further evaluation.

Development of a numerical procedure to map a general 3-d body onto a near-circle

Conformal mapping is a classical technique utilized for solving problems in aerodynamics and hydrodynamics. Conformal mapping is utilized in the construction of grids around airfoils, engine inlets and other aircraft configurations. These shapes are transformed onto a near-circle image for which the equations of fluid motion are discretized on the mapped plane and solved numerically by utilizing the appropriate techniques. In comparison to other grid-generation techniques such as algerbraic or differential type, conformal mapping offers an analytical and accurate form even if the grid deformation is large. One of the most appealing features is that the grid can be constrained to remain orthogonal to the body after the transformation. Hence, the grid is suitable for analyzing the supersonic flow past a blunt object. The associated shock as a coordinate surface adjusts its position in the course of computation until convergence is reached. The present work applied conformal mapping to 3-D bodies with no axis of symmetry such as the Aerobraking Flight Experiment (AFE) vehicle, transforming the AFE shape onto a near-circle image. A numerical procedure and code are used to generate grids around the AFE body.

The design plan of a VLSI single chip (255, 223) Reed-Solomon decoder

The very large-scale integration (VLSI) architecture of a single chip (255, 223) Reed-Solomon decoder for decoding both errors and erasures is described. A decoding failure detection capability is also included in this system so that the decoder will recognize a failure to decode instead of introducing additional errors. This could happen whenever the received word contains too many errors and erasures for the code to correct. The number of transistors needed to implement this decoder is estimated at about 75,000 if the delay for received message is not included. This is in contrast to the older transform decoding algorithm which needs about 100,000 transistors. However, the transform decoder is simpler in architecture than the time decoder. It is therefore possible to implement a single chip (255, 223) Reed-Solomon decoder with today's VLSI technology. An implementation strategy for the decoder system is presented. This represents the first step in a plan to take advantage of advanced coding techniques to realize a 2.0 dB coding gain for future space missions.

Design and operational features of low-disturbance wind tunnels at NASA Langley for Mach numbers from 3.5 to 18

The experimental and theoretical program at NASA Langley to develop high-speed low-disturbance wind tunnels for transition research is reviewed. Design and operational details of three new low-disturbance wind tunnels - the Mach-18 quiet helium, Mach-8 variable density, and Mach-3.5/Mach-6 high-speed low-disturbance tunnels, are presented. Focus is placed on the high-speed low-disturbance wind tunnel, which will have relatively large mass flows and run times from about 6 to 25 minutes. This facility is designed to provide direct simulation of low-disturbance flight conditions in the atmosphere. The Mach-8 facility will provide uniform flow conditions suitable for validation of aerodynamic codes, while the helium facility will be used for validation of boundary-layer and free shear-layer stability and transition prediction codes.

MPD thruster technology

MPD (MagnetoPlasmaDynamic) thrusters demonstrated between 2000 and 7000 seconds specific impulse at efficiencies approaching 40 percent, and were operated continuously at power levels over 500 kW. These demonstrated capabilities, combined with the simplicity and robustness of the thruster, make them attractive candidates for application to both unmanned and manned orbit raising, lunar, and planetary missions. To date, however, only a limited number of thruster configurations, propellants, and operating conditions were studied. The present status of MPD research is reviewed, including developments in the measured performance levels and electrode erosion rates. Theoretical studies of the thruster dynamics are also described. Significant progress was made in establishing empirical scaling laws, performance and lifetime limitations and in the development of numerical codes to simulate the flow field and electrode processes.

CFD prediction of the near-field sonic boom environment for two low boom HSCT configurations

Current efforts to reduce the sonic boom of a future High Speed Civil Transport (HSCT) by careful shaping have led to the need for more accurate predictions of the near-field flow conditions of the configuration. A fully three-dimensional Euler finite volume code is used to predict sonic boom pressure signatures for two low boom concepts - one designed to cruise at Mach 2 and the other at Mach 3. Calculations were carried out using a grid topology that has been modified to reduce the inaccuracies caused by grid spreading often suffered with CFD methods when calculations several body lengths downstream become necessary. Comparisons of CFD results and experimental wind tunnel signatures are shown. Ground signatures are predicted by extrapolating the pressures predicted by the Euler code with an extrapolation method based on the Whitham theory.
