Fraction of χ c Decays in Prompt J / ψ Production Measured in p Pb Collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV

The fraction of χ c 1 and χ c 2 decays in the prompt J / ψ yield, F χ c → J / ψ = σ χ c → J / ψ / σ J / ψ , is measured by the LHCb detector in p Pb collisions at s NN = 8.16 TeV . The study covers the forward ( 1.5 < y * < 4.0 ) and backward ( − 5.0 < y * < − 2.5 ) rapidity regions, where y * is the J / ψ rapidity in the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass system. Forward and backward rapidity samples correspond to integrated luminosities of 13.6 ± 0.3 and 20.8 ± 0.5 nb − 1 , respectively. The result is presented as a function of the J / ψ transverse momentum p T , J / ψ in the range 1 < p T , J / ψ < 20 GeV / c . The F χ c → J / ψ fraction at forward rapidity is compatible with the LHCb measurement performed in p p collisions at s = 7 TeV , whereas the result at backward rapidity is 2.4 σ larger than in the forward region for 1 < p T , J / ψ < 3 GeV / c . The increase of F χ c → J / ψ at low p T , J / ψ at backward rapidity is compatible with the suppression of the ψ ( 2 S ) contribution to the prompt J / ψ yield. The lack of in-medium dissociation of χ c states observed in this study sets an upper limit of 180 MeV on the free energy available in these p Pb collisions to dissociate or inhibit charmonium state formation. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Present and future of JLab CLAS12 physics program

The CLAS12 detector at Jefferson Lab produced the first results in SIDIS and DI-HADRON reactions. Making use of the CEBAF high energy (up to 11 GeV) and highly longitudinal polartized (up to 90%) electron beam will cover unexplored territories in electron-scattering physics. Exclusive reactions on nuclons and nuclei will be measured with high precision in high luminosity (up to 10e35 cm-2s-1) experiments. Mapping out a new class of structure functions, GPDs and TMDs, detecting and reconstructing exotic meson and baryon states and accessing nucleons correlations in nuclei, in the next decade, the CLAS12 rich physics program will provide insight in the complex dynamics of the QCD paving the road to the EIC physics. In this talk, the CLAS12 detector and JLab Hall-B physics program will be described reporting some preliminary results for flag-ship reactions and plans for future upgrades of the detector.

A novel measurement of initial-state gluon radiation in hadron collisions using Drell-Yan events

A study of initial-state gluon radiation (ISR) in hadron collisions is presented using Drell-Yan (DY) events produced in proton-antiproton collisions by the Tevatron collider at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. This paper adopts a novel approach which uses the mean value of the Z/$\gamma^*$ transverse momentum $ $ in DY events as a powerful observable to characterize the effect of ISR. In a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the CDF Run II detector, $ $ is measured as a function of the Z/$\gamma^*$ invariant mass. It is found that these two observables have a dependence, $ = -8 + 2.2 \ln m_{DY}^2$ [GeV/c], where $m_{DY}$ is the value of the Z/$\gamma^*$ mass measured in units of GeV/$c^2$. This linear dependence is observed for the first time in this analysis. It may be exploited to model the effect of ISR and constrain its impact in other processes.

Differentiable Earth mover’s distance for data compression at the high-luminosity LHC

Abstract The Earth mover’s distance (EMD) is a useful metric for image recognition and classification, but its usual implementations are not differentiable or too slow to be used as a loss function for training other algorithms via gradient descent. In this paper, we train a convolutional neural network (CNN) to learn a differentiable, fast approximation of the EMD and demonstrate that it can be used as a substitute for computing-intensive EMD implementations. We apply this differentiable approximation in the training of an autoencoder-inspired neural network (encoder NN) for data compression at the high-luminosity LHC at CERN The goal of this encoder NN is to compress the data while preserving the information related to the distribution of energy deposits in particle detectors. We demonstrate that the performance of our encoder NN trained using the differentiable EMD CNN surpasses that of training with loss functions based on mean squared error.

Far-Infrared Water Line Emissions from Circumstellar Outflows

We have modeled the far-infrared water line emission expected from circumstellar outflows from oxygen-rich late-type stars, as a function of the mass-loss rate and the terminal outflow velocity. For each mass-loss rate and terminal outflow velocity considered, we computed self-consistently the gas density, temperature, outflow velocity, and water abundance as a function of distance from the star. We then used an escape probability method to solve for the equilibrium level populations of 80 rotational states of water and thereby obtained predictions for the luminosity of a large number of far-infrared rotational transitions of water. In common with previous models, our model predicts that water will be copiously produced in the warm circumstellar gas and that water rotational emission will dominate the radiative cooling. However, our use of a realistic radiative cooling function for water leads to a lower gas temperature than that predicted in previous models. Our predictions for the far-infrared water line luminosities are consequently significantly smaller than those obtained in previous studies. Observations to be carried out by the Infrared Space Observatory will provide a crucial test of the models presented here.

A photoelectric study of Messier 81.

Results of photoelectric observations in B and V made at over 1200 locations in Messier 81, covering an area of approximately 169 square minutes of arc and including the galaxy's nucleus. Isophote maps in V and B based on these observations have been drawn. Two independent fits on the resulting V and B luminosity distributions yield average integrated magnitudes of V equals 6.94 and B equals 7.89. B - V and (integrated B) - (integrated V) are given as functions of distance from the center of the galaxy along the semimajor axis. A mass model is derived using a rotation curve based on the velocities measured by Muench (1959). The total mass of M81 is found to be 1.62 x 10 to the 11th solar masses. The final apparent mass-to-luminosity ratios in V and B are 11.2 and 15.1, respectively.

A prescription for the asteroseismic surface correction

In asteroseismology, the surface effect refers to a disparity between the observed and the modelled frequencies in stars with solar-like oscillations. It originates from improper modelling of the surface layers. Correcting the surface effect usually requires using functions with free parameters, which are conventionally fitted to the observed frequencies. On the basis that the correction should vary smoothly across the H–R diagram, we parameterize it as a simple function of surface gravity, effective temperature, and metallicity. We determine this function by fitting a wide range of stars. The absolute amount of the surface correction decreases with luminosity, but the ratio between it and νmax increases, suggesting the surface effect is more important for red giants than dwarfs. Applying the prescription can eliminate unrealistic surface correction, which improves parameter estimations with stellar modelling. Using two open clusters, we found a reduction of scatter in the model-derived ages for each star in the same cluster. As an important application, we provide a new revision for the Δν scaling relation that, for the first time, accounts for the surface correction. The values of the correction factor, f Δν , are up to 2 percent smaller than those determined without the surface effect considered, suggesting decreases of up to 4 percent in radii and up to 8 percent in masses when using the asteroseismic scaling relations. This revision brings the asteroseismic properties into an agreement with those determined from eclipsing binaries. The new correction factor and the stellar models with the corrected frequencies are available at https://www.github.com/parallelpro/surface.

Flaring Stars in a Non-targeted mm-wave Survey with SPT-3G

We present a flare star catalog from four years of non-targeted millimeter-wave survey data from the South Pole Telescope (SPT). The data were taken with the SPT-3G camera and cover a 1500-square-degree region of the sky from $20^{h}40^{m}0^{s}$ to $3^{h}20^{m}0^{s}$ in right ascension and $-42^{\circ}$ to $-70^{\circ}$ in declination. This region was observed on a nearly daily cadence from 2019-2022 and chosen to avoid the plane of the galaxy. A short-duration transient search of this survey yields 111 flaring events from 66 stars, increasing the number of both flaring events and detected flare stars by an order of magnitude from the previous SPT-3G data release. We provide cross-matching to Gaia DR3, as well as matches to X-ray point sources found in the second ROSAT all-sky survey. We have detected flaring stars across the main sequence, from early-type A stars to M dwarfs, as well as a large population of evolved stars. These stars are mostly nearby, spanning 10 to 1000 parsecs in distance. Most of the flare spectral indices are constant or gently rising as a function of frequency at 95/150/220 GHz. The timescale of these events can range from minutes to hours, and the peak $\nu L_{\nu}$ luminosities range from $10^{27}$ to $10^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in the SPT-3G frequency bands.

Study of exclusive photoproduction of charmonium in ultra-peripheral lead-lead collisions

The cross-sections of exclusive (coherent) photoproduction J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons in ultra-peripheral PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV are measured using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 228 ± 10 µb -1 , collected by the LHCb experiment in 2018. The differential cross-sections are measured separately as a function of transverse momentum and rapidity in the nucleus-nucleus centre-of-mass frame for J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons. The integrated cross-sections are measured to be $σ^{coh}_{J/ψ}$ = 5.965 ± 0.059 ± 0.232 ± 0.262 mb and $σ^{coh}_{ψ(2S)}$ = 0.923 ± 0.086 ± 0.028 ± 0.040 mb, where the first listed uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third due to the luminosity determination. The cross-section ratio is measured to be $σ^{coh}_{ψ(2S)}$/$σ^{coh}_{J/ψ}$ = 0.155 ± 0.014 ± 0.003, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. These results are compatible with theoretical predictions.

Enhancing the hunt for new phenomena in dijet final states using anomaly detection filters at the high-luminosity large Hadron Collider

In the realm of dijet searches in high-energy physics, a significant challenge has emerged: with experiments producing more and more data, the traditional methods of using analytic functions to describe dijet mass spectra start to fail. Here, to address this, we suggest the application of an anomaly detection approach to eliminate less interesting background events based on event final states. This method not only bypasses the limitations of conventional background models but also significantly enhances our ability to detect potential signals of new physics. Through simulations that mimic the conditions of the upcoming high-luminosity large Hadron collider, we demonstrate the strength and efficiency of this approach in dealing with large data volumes. The integration of unsupervised machine learning into our experimental framework paves the way for a promising avenue to unveil hidden physics discoveries within the overwhelming influx of data.

Hyper Suprime-Cam Year 3 results: Cosmology from galaxy clustering and weak lensing with HSC and SDSS using the minimal bias model

Here, we present cosmological parameter constraints from a blind joint analysis of three two-point correlation functions measured from the Year 3 Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC-Y3) imaging data, covering about 416 deg 2 , and the SDSS DR11 spectroscopic galaxies spanning the redshift range [0.15, 0.70]. We subdivide the SDSS galaxies into three luminosity-cut, and therefore nearly volume-limited samples separated in redshift, each of which acts as a large-scale structure tracer characterized by the measurement of the projected correlation function, w p ⁡(R). We also use the measurements of the galaxy-galaxy weak-lensing signal Δ⁢Σ⁡(R) for each of these SDSS samples which act as lenses for a secure sample of source galaxies selected from the HSC-Y3 shape catalog based on their photometric redshifts. We combine these measurements with the cosmic shear correlation functions, ξ ± ⁡($\vartheta$) measured for our HSC source sample. We model these observables with the minimal bias model of the galaxy clustering observables in the context of a flat Λ⁢CDM cosmology. We use conservative scale cuts, R >12 and 8⁢ℎ -1 Mpc for Δ⁢Σ and w p , respectively, where the minimal bias model is valid, in addition to conservative prior on the residual bias in the mean redshift of the HSC photometric source galaxies. We present various validation tests of our model as well as analysis methods. Our baseline analysis yields S 8 = $0.77⁢5^{+0.043}_{-0.038}$ (68% C.I.) for the Λ⁢CDM model, after marginalizing over uncertainties in other parameters. Our value of S 8 is consistent with that from the Planck 2018 data, but the credible interval of our result is still relatively large. We show that various internal consistency tests based on different splits of the data are passed. Our results are statistically consistent with those of a companion paper, which extends this analysis to smaller scales with an emulator-based halo model, using Δ⁢Σ⁡(R) and w p ⁡(R) down to R >3 and 2⁢ℎ -1 Mpc, respectively.

A new determination of the halo luminosity density of the galaxy

The distribution of tangential velocities for arbitrary halo velocity dispersions and rotation rates are explicitly computed, assuming a particular form of the halo velocity distribution function near the sun. It is found that for a specific model of the halo velocity dispersion tensor that Schmidt's (1975) estimate of the mass carried by halo stars of 0.25-0.70 solar masses should be revised by a factor of between 1.0 and 2.0, depending on the rotation rate of the halo. Although obtaining a mass density in all stars from the stellar density in that mass range is extremely uncertain, it is found, in agreement with earlier work, that even under rather extreme assumptions about the remnants the observed stars and expected remnants fail to provide the theoretically expected mass. Comparison of the luminosity to the theoretical mass yields a mass to light ratio consistent with that of rich clusters of galaxies.

Measurement of differential t-channel single top (anti)quark production cross-sections at 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The production of single top quarks and top antiquarks via the t-channel exchange of a virtual W boson is measured in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The full Run 2 data sample recorded with the ATLAS detector in the years 2015–2018 is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1. The absolute and normalised production cross-sections are measured differentially as a function of the transverse momentum and absolute rapidity of the top quark and top antiquark. In addition, the ratio of top quark to top antiquark production cross-sections is measured. The measured distributions are compared with next-to-leading-order quantum chromodynamics predictions obtained with different combinations of matrix-element generators, parton-shower programs and proton parton distribution functions, as well as to next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations. Overall, good agreement is observed between the measurements and the theoretical predictions. For most measured distributions, the sensitivity to differences between the predictions is limited by the systematic uncertainties in the measurement. The measured differential distributions are also interpreted in an effective field theory approach to constrain the Wilson-Coefficient CQq3,1$$ {C}_{Qq}^{3,1} $$ associated with a four-quark operator. The interpretation accounts for the effect of the selection efficiency, which is altered significantly by non-zero contributions from CQq3,1$$ {C}_{Qq}^{3,1} $$.

Measurement of the Drell–Yan forward-backward asymmetry and of the effective leptonic weak mixing angle in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ 13 TeV

The forward-backward asymmetry in Drell-Yan production and the effective leptonic electroweak mixing angle are measured in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The measurement uses both dimuon and dielectron events, and is performed as a function of the dilepton mass and rapidity. The unfolded angular coefficient $A_4$ is also extracted, as a function of the dilepton mass and rapidity. Using the CT18Z set of parton distribution functions, we obtain $\sin^{2}\theta^\ell_\text{eff}$ = 0.23152 $\pm$ 0.00031, where the uncertainty includes the experimental and theoretical contributions. The measured value agrees with the standard model fit result to global experimental data. This is the most precise $\sin^{2}\theta^\ell_\text{eff}$ measurement at a hadron collider, with a precision comparable to the results obtained at LEP and SLD.

Spherical accretion onto quasars

The problem of time-steady accretion of gas irradiated by a self-consistently generated quasar-like continuum is investigated. A controversy in the literature is resolved by a careful distinction between the existence of solutions and their stability. Specific criteria are found for when thermal instabilities may disrupt single-phase steady flow. As a function of initial temperature (1,000,000-100,000,000 K), the boundaries of stable flow in the luminosity are determined relative to the Eddington (L/LE)-efficiency plane. The thermal and dynamical history of these steady flows is analyzed. The observational data that define quasars and type I Seyfert galaxies are matched to find values of efficiency and L/LE required for consistent spherically symmetric steady-flow models. The efficiency is constrained to be less than 1/100, and L/LE resides between several times 1/1000-1/100.

Multiplicity and transverse momentum dependence of charge-balance functions in pPb and PbPb collisions at LHC energies

Measurements of the charge-dependent two-particle angular correlation function in proton-lead (pPb) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV and lead-lead (PbPb) collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV are reported. The pPb and PbPb data sets correspond to integrated luminosities of 186 nb -1 and 0.607 nb -1 , respectively, and were collected using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. The charge-dependent correlations are characterized by balance functions of same- and opposite-sign particle pairs. The balance functions, which contain information about the creation time of charged particle pairs and the development of collectivity, are studied as functions of relative pseudorapidity (Δη) and relative azimuthal angle (Δφ), for various multiplicity and transverse momentum (p T ) intervals. A multiplicity dependence of the balance function is observed in Δη and Δφ for both systems. The width of the balance functions decreases towards high-multiplicity collisions in the momentum region < 2 GeV, for pPb and PbPb results. Integrals of the balance functions are presented in both systems, and a mild dependence of the charge-balancing fractions on multiplicity is observed. No multiplicity dependence is observed at higher transverse momentum. The data are compared with HYDJET, HIJING, and AMPT generator predictions, none of which capture completely the multiplicity dependence seen in the data. The comparison of results with different center-of-mass energies suggests that the balance functions become narrower at higher energies, which is consistent with the idea of delayed hadronization and the effect of radial flow.
