MELCOR Accident Progression and Source Term Demonstration Calculations for a Heat Pipe Reactor

MELCOR is an integrated thermal hydraulics, accident progression, and source term code for reactor safety analysis that has been developed at Sandia National Laboratories for the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) since the early 1980s. Though MELCOR originated as a light water reactor (LWR) code, development and modernization efforts have expanded its application scope to includ e non-LWR reactor concepts. Current MELCOR development efforts include providing the NRC with the analytical capabilities to support regulatory readiness for licensing non-LWR techno logies under Strategy 2 of the NRC?s near- term Implementation Action Plans. Beginning with the Next Generation Nuclear Project (NGNP), MELCOR has undergone a range of enha ncements to provide analytical capabilities for modeling the spectrum of advanced non-LWR concepts. This report describes the generic plant model developed to demonstrate MELCOR capabilities to perform heat pipe reactor (HPR) safety evaluations. The generic plant mode l is based on a publicly-available Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Megapower design as modified in the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) Design A description. For plant aspects (e.g., reactor building size and leak rate) that are not described in the LANL and INL references , the analysts made assumptions needed to construct a MELCOR full-plant model. The HP R uses high assay, low-enrichment uranium (HALEU) fuel with steel cladding that uses heat pipes to transfer heat to a secondary Brayton air cycle. The core region is surrounded by a stainless-steel shroud, alumina reflector, core barrel and boron carbide neutron shield. The reactor is secured inside a below-grade cavity, with the operating floor located above the cavity. Example calculations are performed to show the plant response and MELCOR capabilities to characterize a range of accident conditions. The accidents selected for evaluation consider a range of degraded and failed modes of operation for key safety functions providing re activity control, the primary and secondary system heat removal, and the effectiveness of th e confinement natural circulation flow into the reactor cavity (i.e., a flow blockage).

General Employee Radiological Training: 24 Month Refresher (Course #47968)

GERT is required by the 10 CFR 835, the Federal Regulation on Radiation Protection that we follow here at LANL. It’s the training for non Rad Workers who may enter Radiological Controlled Areas (RCAs) and Radioactive Material Areas (RMAs) in an unescorted manner. If your work assignment requires access to areas posted for higher radiological hazards like Radiological Buffer Areas (RBAs), Radiation Areas, Contamination Areas, and others you are required to have Rad Worker training. Once you complete this training you will be qualified to access RCAs and RMAs at LANL without an escort. However, you are not qualified to operate radiation producing devices, work with radioactive material, or do work where you may receive greater than 100 mrem of exposure in a year.

Production Agency Quality Assurance Management Execution Strategy [Thesis]

There are multiple federal directives that Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) must follow for the proper implementation of quality assurance, strategic planning, and execution of manufacturing and surveillance operations. Recent assessments identified that manufacturing in all processing areas is dynamic due to influencing scope changes, design modifications, funding adjustments, and staff attrition. In response, this project was started to develop a comprehensive PAQ execution strategy to support the success of LANL’s manufacturing mission. This project’s method for developing an updated architecture was to create an integrated, flexible, reliable, and agile strategic process. The execution plan has five deliverables: 1) an integrated schedule view of PAQ work scope, 2) a resource management plan that aligns with the required scope, 3) a metrics monitoring dashboard, 4) a project management plan for sustaining NAP 401.1A implementation, and 5) a risk management plan. The research design is a mixed-method approach focused on data collection for each deliverable. The methodology entails qualitative and quantitative research, metrics monitoring, data analysis, and the creation of a dashboard. The qualitative methods used include literature reviews and interviews. The quantitative methods include resource, financial, schedule and survey data analysis. Preliminary and final results were peer reviewed by subject matter experts both within the ALDWP organization and deployed support.

Cost-Efficient Construction at Los Alamos National Laboratory

The construction industry can be fraught with cost, schedule, and scope overruns. Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), a Department of Energy (DOE) / National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) facility located in Northern New Mexico, seems to be particularly vulnerable to cost and schedule overruns. Since Triad National Security, LLC acquired the management and operating (M&O) contract for LANL in 2018, the group has been striving to reduce the cost of construction across the forty square-mile campus.

Kiwi-TNT Simulation Model [Slides]

The Kiwi-TNT Test (Toonerville Trolley) was performed on January 12, 1965. LANL has the objective: "LANL will develop a defensible methodology for establishing the maximum number of fissions for postulated inadvertent criticality events. The methodology may include several methods, such as hand calculations, sophisticated modeling, and the use of historical data.” The historic test, Kiwi TNT, posed a starting point for predictive simulations to determine the number of fissions and excursion understanding. This presentation gives results of that effort.

Evaluation of Synthetic Diamond Detectors for Fast Neutron and X-ray Detection [Slides]

Element6 has come out of a two year production pause (pre-COVID) with material that lacks their previous QC – some is excellent, but screening is needed. Applied Diamond can now make usable polycrystalline material, for applications not requiring absolute flux calibration. A large area possible (1cm 2 ). Great Lakes Crystal Technology has made great progress in two years, but still needs development to become a trusted supplier of single crystal material. LANL staff (Dongsung Kim) has developed proficient lithography and bonding expertise at CINT to make devices from vendor supplied material. LANL staff has continued and expanded capabilities for device testing at NSLS-II.

Fission In R-process Elements (FIRE) - Quarterly Report (Q2FY22)

The goal of the FIRE topical collaboration in nuclear theory was to determine the astrophysical conditions of the rapid neutron capture process (r-process), which is responsible for the formation of heavy elements. This was be achieved by including in r-process simulations the most advanced models of fission (spontaneous, neutron-induced, β-delayed) that have been developed at LLNL and LANL. The collaboration was composed of LLNL (lead) and LANL for fission work, BNL for nuclear data management, and the university of Notre Dame and North Carolina State University for r-process simulations. Under DOE/NNSA agreement, both universities received funds from DOE Office of Science, while national laboratories receive funds directly from NA221.

CVEN 5899 Internship report

The internship is under the project of Center for Space and Earth Science student fellow program of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The topic of the project is grain-scale prediction of hypervelocity projectile penetration into terrestrial and extraterrestrial granular materials, which is also my PhD research topic. In this research, we would like to use discrete element method (DEM) to simulate the hyper-speed penetration into granular materials and compare with experiment results. The experiment is done by the Proton Radiography (pRad) team of LANL. In the experiment, a jet traveled through the sand with velocity of 4 km/s (fig.1). Our goal is to develop the large deformation constitutive model by the stress and strain upscaling, study the fluid (air) behavior and particle fracture during the hyperspeed penetration.

Transportation Plan Los Alamos National Laboratory FY2023

Los Alamos National Laboratory’s (LANL’s) mission expansion is expected to increase the workforce population (badge holders) to more than 18,000 by 2028. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, traffic congestion was notable and was impeding commuting workers in the forms of traffic congestion, travel delay, inconvenience, frustration, and time lost hunting for parking near an office location or programmatic operation. The Laboratory transportation strategy is moving toward transit-based commuting and not status quo expansion of onsite parking and roadways to serve this growing workforce. This plan addresses a multi-faceted transit and transportation solution. The body of the plan describes each aspect of this solution and concludes with a recommended set of Fiscal Year 2023 (FY23) investments planned as next steps toward implementation. The broad strategy is to offer agility and program depth for services and systems that can enable LANL to confidently invest, monitor performance, seek participant feedback, and make necessary adjustments.
