Experiment Pamir-3. Coplanar emission of high energy gamma-quanta at interaction of hadrons with nuclei of air atoms at energies above 10 to the 7th power GeV

A systematic analysis of large gamma families, detected in X-ray emulsion chambers, cases of multicore halos have been observed, and among them five events in which the halo is divided into three of four separate cores with their alignment observed in the target diagram (coplanarity of axes of corresponding electron photon cascades). The halo alignment (tendency to the straight line) leads to the aximuthal asymmetry (thrust). The analysis of lateral and momentum distributions of particles in these families shows that they also have thrust that correlates with the direction of the halo core alignment.

Extremely high energy hadron and gamma-ray families(3). Core structure of the halo of superfamily

The study of the core structure seen in the halo of Mini-Andromeda 3(M.A.3), which was observed in the Chacaltaya emulsion chamber, is presented. On the assumption that lateral distribution of darkness of the core is exponential type, i.e., D=D0exp(-R/r0), subtraction of D from halo darkness is performed until the cores are gone. The same quantity on cores obtained by this way are summarized. The analysis is preliminary and is going to be developed.

Hadrons registration in emulsion chamber with carbon block

Nuclear-electro-magnetic cascade (NEC) in X-ray emulsion chambers with carbon block, which are usually used in the Pamir experiment, was Monte-Carlo simulated. Going over from optical density to Summary E sub gamma is discussed. The hole of NEC in the interpretation of energy spectra is analyzed.

Electrons, muons and hadrons in extensive air showers and how do they depend on nuclear interaction model, part 2

Some of the results of Monte Carlo simulations of extensive air showers for nuclear interactions models are presented. The most significant part of scaling violation effect is generated by the inclusion of rising cross-section. Among the models considered the lowest value for Eo/N(max) is obtained when rapidly rising cross-section and charge exchange are both included (model R-F01). The value is still 1.38 GeV/electron. Except at the highest energies, the sensitivity to atomic mass of the primary is greater than to specific assumptions about multiple production.

Sensitivity of depth of maximum and absorption depth of EAS to hadron production mechanism

Comparison of experimental data on depth of extensive air showers (EAS) development maximum in the atmosphere, T sub M and path of absorption, lambda, in the lower atmosphere of EAS with fixed particle number in the energy region eV with the results of calculation show that these parameters are sensitive mainly to the inelastic interaction cross section and scaling violation in the fragmentation and pionization region. The data are explained in a unified manner within the framework of a model in which scaling is violated slightly in the fragmentation region and strongly in the pionization region at primary cosmic rays composition close to the normal one and a permanent increase of inelastic interaction cross section. It is shown that, while interpreting the experimental data, disregard of two methodical points causes a systematic shift in T sub M: (1) shower selection system; and (2) EAS electron lateral distribution when performing the calculations on basis of which the transfer is made from the Cerenkov pulse FWHM to the depth of shower maximum, T sub M.

The central engine of quasars and active galactic nuclei Hadronic interactions of shock-accelerated relativistic protons

The detailed dynamics are presented of a model for AGNs and QSOs based on spherically symmetric accretion onto a black hole and dissipation of the accretion energy in a collisionless shock. The basic assumptions and equations relevant for the model are presented, and the relations between the physical parameters are given in terms of the shock parameters. The latter are calculated for varying Mach numbers, and the resulting scaling laws are discussed and compared to the data, in particular the recently discovered correlations between luminosity and mass. The model can naturally produce ultrarelativistic electrons with flat spectra, a feature which, when coupled with e(+)-e(-) pair production, can account for the observed continuum radiation from these objects over essentially the whole electromagnetic spectrum. The model also predicts the emission of high-energy neutrinos with a luminosity roughly equal to that of the photons.

Accuracy of analytic energy level formulas applied to hadronic spectroscopy of heavy mesons

Linear and harmonic potential models are used in the nonrelativistic Schroedinger equation to obtain article mass spectra for mesons as bound states of quarks. The main emphasis is on the linear potential where exact solutions of the S-state eigenvalues and eigenfunctions and the asymptotic solution for the higher order partial wave are obtained. A study of the accuracy of two analytical energy level formulas as applied to heavy mesons is also included. Cornwall's formula is found to be particularly accurate and useful as a predictor of heavy quarkonium states. Exact solution for all partial waves of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for a harmonic potential is also obtained and compared with the calculated discrete spectra of the linear potential. Detailed derivations of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the linear and harmonic potentials are presented in appendixes.

A Hadronic Synchrotron Mirror Model for the "Orphan" Tev Flare in 1ES 1959+650

Very high energy gamma-ray flares of TeV blazars are generally accompanied by simultaneous flaring activity in X-rays. The recent observations by the Whipple collaboration of an "orphan" TeV flare of 1 ES 1959+650 (without a simultaneous X-ray flare) are very difficult to reconcile with the standard leptonic synchrotron self-Compton model, which is routinely very successfully employed to explain the spectral energy distribution and spectral variability of TeV blazars. In this paper an alternative scenario is suggested in which the orphan TeV flare may originate from relativistic protons, interacting with an external photon field supplied by electron synchrotron radiation reflected off a dilute reflector. While the external photons will be virtually "invisible" to the comoving ultrarelativistic electrons in the jet because of Klein-Nishina effects, their Doppler-boosted energy is high enough to excite a Delta-resonance from relativistic protons with Lorentz factors of gamma(sub p) approx. 10(exp 3)-10(exp 4). This model is capable of explaining the orphan TeV flare of 1ES 1959+650 with plausible parameters, thus constraining the number and characteristic energy of relativistic protons in the jet of this blazar.
